Kornel Chang on U.S. Power, Korean Resistance, and the Birth of Division What if Korea's true revolution was never allowed to happen? In this episode, I talk with historian Kornel Chang, author of A Fractured Liberation, to explore a moment in Korean history that most people never learn about. A moment when ordinary Koreans believed they were on the brink of something new. In 1945 Japanese colonial rule had ended and, across the peninsula, people were filled with hope. Workers seized factories, farmers reclaimed land, and women demanded rights. It was Korea's “Asian Spring”...an explosion of grassroots energy and possibility. But it didn't last.  Instead of freedom, Koreans faced a new occupying force: the U.S. military government in the South. Kornel walks us through how the American-led administration, fearful of leftist movements and obsessed with anti-communism, sidelined local efforts toward democracy, reinstalled collaborators from the colonial regime, and helped lay the groundwork for division, war, and decades of authoritarian rule. This is a story about who gets to decide the future when the dust of war settles. And it's more important than ever.    Buy A Fractured Liberation: https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/9780674258433 Kornel Chang is the author of Pacific Connections: The Making of the U.S.-Canadian Borderlands, winner of the Association for Asian American Studies Book Prize in History. In this episode of Native Circles, Dr. Farina King, co-editor of COVID-19 in Indian Country, talks with co-authors Dr. Amoneeta Beckstein and Dr. Tapati Dutta about their chapter, exploring the lived experiences of eight Native American college students during the pandemic. Drawing from semi-structured interviews, the chapter centers the students' voices as they navigate the challenges of COVID-19—illuminating themes of historical trauma, mental health struggles, and educational disruptions rooted in colonial legacies. Yet, amid these hardships, stories of resilience or "reziliency," cultural strength, and community support arise. In this conversation, the authors reflect on their perspectives as researchers and underscore the students' expressions of survivance, collectivistic coping, and cultural healing.Dr. Beckstein is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Fort Lewis College whose work focuses on multicultural counseling, mindfulness, and decolonizing psychology to promote healing for BIPOC and Indigenous communities. He previously directed the Counseling Center at Webster University Thailand and brings a creative approach to mental health, including poetry and advocacy. The P-47 Thunderbolt is considered one of the most important fighter-bombers used by Allied Forces in World War II. Thunderbolts flew over half a million missions and are renowned by pilots for their durability and reliability.  Over one-third of all Thunderbolts were built at the Republic Aviation plant in Evansville. Notably, nearly half of the plant's employees were women. Known as “Raiderettes,” they worked alongside male workers and boasted a variety of jobs including on the assembly lines, in the administrative offices, and even as test pilots. Many of the women were “two-job workers,” balancing 14-hour shifts at Republic with raising children while their partners fought overseas. Our new blog post examines the lived experiences of the Raiderettes and how they navigated being women workers in a “man's” world, pushing against and often breaking the glass ceiling in the process. Having #ADD or #ADHD is a gift, not a curse. Hear from people all around the globe, from every walk of life, in every profession, from Rock Stars to CEOs, from Teachers to Politicians, who have learned how to unlock the gifts of their #ADD and #ADHD diagnosis, and use it to their personal and professional advantage, to build businesses, become millionaires, or simply better their lives.  Our Guest today, Vanessa Jones, is an English teacher, writer, and voice actor. When Vanessa received her #adultADHD diagnosis, she did a deep dive into #ADHD research and applied this knowledge to her teaching practices with #ADHD students. She also wrote down her own stories to make sense of the impact of #ADHD on her life. She especially wanted to understand how undiagnosed #ADHD has affected her failed marriage. The result is an #ADHD-friendly guidebook, complete with an engaging, poignant and funny personal narrative of her lived experience that illustrates the various challenges (and strengths) of #ADHD, one trait at a time.  Vanessa likes using her narrative skills to promote the educational messages of organizations working to teach people about #neurodivergence. On any given day, you may find her poring over Medium articles of peoples' lived experiences with #autism and #ADHD, wiring a personal essay about her sweater, or using her voice to tell a company's story.  Enjoy!  [You are now safely here] 00:00 - Thank you again so much for listening and for subscribing!! 00:37 - Introducing and welcome Vanessa Jones!  01:28 - Vanessa's life before her diagnosis.  02:17 - “I knew that I was brilliant in certain ways.” 02:39 - What happened next… 03:49 - Realizing it wasn't her fault.  04:19 - What does the right support look like?  05:04 - What was different after your diagnosis?  07:22 - Has the shift happened?  08:42 - It's not about you.  09:40 - What Vanessa needed to move forward.  11:10 - “How Did That Happen?” 13:40 - Thanks so much for enjoying "Faster Than Normal”!
