We live in the age of sanctions - with Trump dishing out punitive foreign policy willy-nilly, and Russia's war in Ukraine attracting more sanctions then the next top-sanctioned countries combined. It's time to ask: who are they really helping? Activists often call on their leaders to sanction foreign governments they see as breaking human rights laws. We're told that sanctions help protect civilians from their own, and neighbouring, oppressive regimes. But when civilian voices are left out of the conversation, and coverage constantly fails to examine the impact on the ground, how do we know if this is really what's happening? How do we learn from mistakes? Because there are mistakes. Venezuelan sanctions today, like Iraqi sanctions in the 1990s, are estimated to have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people. Yet just this week, we've seen more introduced. Media Storm speaks to civilians from countries around the world, and discusses the real-life consequences of sanctions with one of the leading reporters on the topic - and the few to have consistently centred civilian voices - Murtaza Hussain from Drop Site News. The episode also features Ilona Oleksiuk, from Ukrainian anti-fossil fuel group, Razom We Stand; Tata Chikviladze, Georgian journalist and protester; and Danielle Bett, Scottish-Israeli pro-democracy activist with Yachad. Foreign secretary Lord Cameron has said rather than waiting for a successful outcome of peace talks in the Middle East the UK would consider the idea of Palestinian state during negotiations. It's a subtle but important shift in emphasis in the government's position – the idea, said Cameron, is to give the Palestinian people “a political horizon”. In other words, a route to statehood a without having to resort to violence. The initiative been welcomed by the Palestinian mission in London, but rejected by the Israeli government.Adrian Goldberg hears from Hannah Weisfeld, Executive Director of Yachad, an organisation whose primary mission is to empower British Jews to support a political resolution to the Israeli Palestinian conflict.Produced in Birmingham by Adrian Goldberg. With the death toll soaring in Gaza, the international community urging Israel to show restraint, and Israelis and Jews still reeling from the October 7 Hamas attacks, Hannah Weisfeld is firm in her belief that a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians is the only viable route to peace. She is the founder of Yachad, a British Jewish organisation working to empower British Jews to support a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

It is often better to talk about solutions rather than problems. And today, on "The Watchdog," Lowkey talks to British-Palestinian intellectual Ghada Karmi about her new book, "One State: The Only Democratic Future for Palestine-Israel."In "One State," Karmi envisages uniting the land, from the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea, under one secular, democratic nation, allowing refugees to return to their homeland in safety and enjoy the same rights and securities that those currently living there have. She insists that this is the only way to end the anti-democratic nature of the Israeli state.Lowkey and Karmi have previously teamed up to debate at the Oxford Union together, and earlier this summer, they were scheduled to discuss her new book in person at a London book launch with the Balfour Project. Yet the night before the event was planned, Karmi received a phone call telling her that it had been canceled. The reason? A Zionist organization called Yachad had pressured the Balfour Project over Lowkey's inclusion. For the Balfour Project, she alleges, "keeping them [Yachad] happy was more important than keeping me and you happy." Thus, the event was canceled. There is likely more to this cancellation than a misunderstanding; while the organization's official mission is to "empower British Jews to support a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," in reality, it works closely with Israeli intelligence organizations Shin Bet and Shabak.Karmi is a survivor of the Nakba of 1948 – the nascent Israeli state's systematic expulsion of Palestinians from their land. While many understand the Nakba as an ongoing process, there is no doubt that 1948 stands out as a particularly bloody and genocidal year in Palestinian history. Today, she talked of her childhood memories, how, despite her parents' assurances, she had a premonition that her family would never be back, and how her family never talked about Palestine because it was simply too traumatic. One of the little-publicized aspects of the Nakba was the severance of human ties so that people who had been your neighbors, friends or employers somehow disappeared. Because in the rush to save one's family, where were those people? And as so often happened, they were never reclaimed. Those people went, we don't know where, and they didn't know where we had gone. And that is a significant aspect of our eviction of our homeland that often is not talked about.Support the showThe MintPress podcast, “The Watchdog,” hosted by British-Iraqi hip hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in the public interest to know – including intelligence, lobby and special interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target dissent. Today we will continue quoting from the sign that hung on the front door of the Yeshiva of Kelm throughout the month of Elul. Yesterday we discussed that the foundation of Rosh Hashanah is that Hashem is King, and that a kingdom can only work if the subjects are united. Therefore we, in the kingdom of God, must be united. Unity is not just external, but rather it starts in the heart, specifically, with the Mitzvah Veahavta LeRe'echa Kamocha/loving your fellow Jew like you love yourself. Therefore, during the month of Elul , and during the entire year, we must commit ourselves to this. We can't come on Rosh Hashanah and declare Hashem the king while we are not working on our friendship and unity with our comrades. This must be a year-long job. Therefore, going into Rosh Hashanah, we have to commit ourselves to this. It's nice that we, in this group, have been working on this concept, so we can re-commit ourselves to Ahavat Yisrael. He says that, if heaven forbid, a person does not have a clean heart, how can he go into Rosh Hashanah? A person might think that this is too hard. They might wonder how they can do this. But he says that slowly but surely, we will change. We should consider that by committing ourselves to this, we are doing teshuva . He adds, “ Who can fathom the merit for yourself, and for the entire world, if there is a group of people working on loving their fellow Jew?” How do you work on this? By thinking thoughts about loving your fellow Jew. He says we should specifically work on the Sefer Tomar Devorah (B'ezrat Hashem, we will get to that sometime this year). Having this idea in our minds for the entire month of Elul , and for the upcoming year, is a merit for a kativa and Hatima tova (to be written and signed for a good year ) amongst all the Jewish people. This is a very powerful point, which this great leader felt was important enough to post on the front door of his Bet Midrash. He adds that it is a good idea to pick a spot in your prayers, where every day during the month, you can think of this concept. His recommendation is at the point right before the Amida , when we say S hirat Hadasha A new song… those that are redeemed sang to Your great Name, on the edge of the sea, יחד Yachad , Together , they all praised You and coronated You and said, ה ׳ ימלך לעולם ועד Hashem will be King forever When you say these words every morning, at the word “ Yachad ” Think to yourself First I need “Yachad/ unity, And then - וְהִמְלִֽיכוּ Himlichu, we can make Hashem King If we do this for the next 30 days, every single morning, Yachad , then Himlichu , that will drill into our heads the importance of achdut/unity for Hashem's kingdom. Have a wonderful day.
James discusses with Eve from Yachad, a pro-Israel and pro-two state solution organisation, the evolving situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories including Sheikh Jarrah, the conflict with Gaza and internal Israeli divisions.

Rabbi Dovid M. Cohen is Mark’s very special guest on the podcast today. Currently the Rabbi of Congregation Ohr Torah in North Woodmere, NY, Rabbi Cohen is also an attorney and a Senior Relationship Officer at YACHAD, a thriving global organization dedicated to addressing the needs of all Jewish individuals with disabilities and ensuring their inclusion in every aspect of Jewish life. He has a law degree from Columbia Law School, a Masters degree in Family Therapy from the University of North Texas, and he maintains a small therapy practice in the 5 Towns area. The passage he has chosen to discuss with Mark today is Genesis 2:24. Rabbi Cohen begins the discussion by sharing his summary of the passage, its significance for him, and the interpretation of it, which involves transitioning from a taker to a giver, that he has adopted. He and Mark then engage in a fascinating conversation where they explore alternate interpretations, the ethic this passage communicates, and how it relates to the counseling which the Rabbi offers. They also examine the goal of marriage and to ‘get to Aryeh Levin’, the story behind Rabbi Cohen’s involvement in YACHAD, and the distinction between marriage and partnership. As all guests do, Rabbi Cohen finishes the discussion with the lessons he has learned about humankind. Today’s episode presents a brilliant demonstration of the Torah’s openness to interpretation as well as the eternal truths it presents, both of which are exemplified in the analysis of this passage which truly ‘should be the basis of all Jewish, and maybe Gentile, marital counseling’. Episode Highlights: · Rabbi Cohen’s summary of the passage its significance for him · Transitioning from taker to giver · Parents of married children needing to let go · The ethic this passage is communicating · Rabbi Cohen’s counseling around this passage · God anticipating or observing a problem · The goal of marriage · The story behind Rabbi Cohen’s involvement in YACHAD · ‘Get to Aryeh Levin’ · Marriage vs. partnership · The lessons Rabbi Cohen has learned about humankind Quotes: “We now have to assume that position of the giver as opposed to the childlike taker.” “It must have been a problem in biblical days of parents remaining too involved in the lives of their married children – incredible, some things never end!” “You’re supposed to individuate, you’re supposed to mature.” “In early years of marriage, you do see a lot of issues that are connected to families of origin, in-law overreaching, particularly if people aren’t financially independent.” “Our relationships have to change in different periods of time.” “In many instances, the 10 or 15 year-old child is actually the parent in the relationship with the 40 and 50 year-old.” “He is kind of setting a tone for what’s to come.” “These are all kind of essential basics, foundational concepts to Jewish marriage, 100 percent.” “I think what the Torah is saying here is that the goal of the process of the whole marriage over many, many years is to reach this high level where…we’re really one.” “There’s no real Jewish notion of independence, it’s a notion of interdependence.” “A person, an individual, has to be able to bind himself or herself to the community, to others.” “I think at the end of the day, there is goodness in everybody, but sometimes you have to dig very deep to unearth it.” “You kind of have to make your own mazel…create our own opportunities.” “The Jewish story never ends…just know you’re going to die unfulfilled and that’s okay.” Genesis 2:24 Hence a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, so that they become one flesh. https://www.sefaria.org/Genesis.2.24?lang=en&with=all&lang2=en Links: The Rabbi’s Husband homepage: http://therabbishusband.com/ Mark’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/markgerson?lang=en

Challenges of Disability in the FamilyRabbi Kivelevitz engages Dr. Juni in a wide-ranging analysis of the experiences of individuals with developmental andpsychiatric Issues, and the effects these have on them and their families.Juni stresses the marked overlap between developmental limitations and emotional maladjustment of the family. Individuals (or victims, as he refers to them) are keenly aware when they are treated as less than people.Kivelevitz notes the progress our society has made, no longer hiding delayed family members in the closet.Religious inclusion-oriented social service agencies such as Yachad and HASC (among others) are lauded as commendable entities which offer vital resources to individuals and families dealing with developmental and psychiatric challenges.Dr. Juni steers the discussion beyond the confines of the special need population and stresses emphatically that ambivalence is an undeniable and even necessary part of any meaningful relationship."A key to dealing with problematic relationships is torecognize and integrate inevitable negative feelings," he declares.Sweeping emotions "under the rug" is seen by Juni in his professional capacity as a pattern of many families in the religious community. The professor has observed that in many cases, there is present a layer of denial characterized by sugar coating problems, being exuberant about difficult children, and maintaining theological theories which paint their travails as blessings from above.Juni worries that these submission tactics are merely functional band-aids for the short term and will turn into roadblocks to authentic healthy family adjustment in the face of near certain adversities of life..Doctor Samuel Juniis one of the foremost research psychologists in the world today. He has published groundbreaking original research in seventy different peer reviewed journals, and is cited continuously with respect by colleagues and experts in the field who have built on his theories and observations.Samuel Juni studied inYeshivas Chaim Berlinunder Rav Yitzchack Hutner, and in Yeshiva University as aTalmidof Rav Joseph Dov Soloveitchick.ProfessorJuni is a prominent member of theAssociation of Orthodox Jewish Scientists, and has regularly presented addresses to captivated audiences.Associated with NYU since 1979,Juni has served as Director of MA and PhD programs, all the while heading teams engaged in important research.Professor Juni's scholarship on aberrant behavior across the cultural, ethnic, and religious spectrum is founded onpsychometric methodologyand based on a psycho-dynamicpsychopathologyperspective.He is possibly the world's expert inDifferential Diagnostics, with each of his myriad studiesentailing parallel efforts in theory construction and empirical data collection from normative and clinical populations.Professor Juni created and directed NYU's Graduate Program in Tel Aviv titledCross-Cultural Group Dynamics in Stressful Environments.Based inYerushalayim, he collaborates with Israeli academic and mental health specialists in the study of dissonant factors and tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict and those within the Orthodox Jewish community, while exploring personality challenges of second-generation Holocaust survivors.Below is a partial list of the journalsto which Professor Juni has contributed over 120 articles. Many are available on lineJournal of Forensic PsychologyJournal of Aggression, Maltreatment, and Trauma.International Review of VictimologyThe Journal of Nervous and Mental DiseaseInternational Forum of PsychoanalysisJournal of Personality AssessmentJournal of Abnormal PsychologyJournal of Psychoanalytic AnthropologyPsychophysiologyPsychology and Human DevelopmentJournal of Sex ResearchJournal of Psychology and JudaismContemporary Family TherapyAmerican Journal on AddictionsJournal of Criminal PsychologyMental Health, Religion & CulturePlease leave us a review or email us at ravkiv@gmail.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Juni steers the discussion beyond the confines of the special need population and stresses emphatically that ambivalence is an undeniable and even necessary part of any meaningful relationship."A key to dealing with problematic relationships is to recognize and integrate inevitable negative feelings," he declares.Sweeping emotions "under the rug" is seen by Juni in his professional capacity as a pattern of many families in the religious community. The professor has observed that in many cases, there is present a layer of denial characterized by sugar coating problems, being exuberant about difficult children, and maintaining theological theories which paint their travails as blessings from above.Juni worries that these submission tactics are merely functional band-aids for the short term and will turn into roadblocks to authentic healthy family adjustment in the face of near certain adversities of life..Doctor Samuel Juni is one of the foremost research psychologists in the world today. He has published groundbreaking original research in seventy different peer reviewed journals, and is cited continuously with respect by colleagues and experts in the field who have built on his theories and observations.Samuel Juni studied in Yeshivas Chaim Berlin under Rav Yitzchack Hutner, and in Yeshiva University as a Talmid of Rav Joseph Dov Soloveitchick.Professor Juni is a prominent member of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists, and has regularly presented addresses to captivated audiences.Associated with NYU since 1979, Juni has served as Director of MA and PhD programs, all the while heading teams engaged in important research.Professor Juni's scholarship on aberrant behavior across the cultural, ethnic, and religious spectrum is founded on psychometric methodology and based on a psycho-dynamic psychopathology perspective. He is possibly the world's expert in Differential Diagnostics, with each of his myriad studiesentailing parallel efforts in theory construction and empirical data collection from normative and clinical populations.Professor Juni created and directed NYU's Graduate Program in Tel Aviv titled Cross-Cultural Group Dynamics in Stressful Environments.Based in Yerushalayim, he collaborates with Israeli academic and mental health specialists in the study of dissonant factors and tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict and those within the Orthodox Jewish community, while exploring personality challenges of second-generation Holocaust survivors.Below is a partial list of the journalsto which Professor Juni has contributed over 120 articles.

Northwest Florida Jewish women join IDF after High School It is unusual to find two young Jewish women from Northwest Florida electing to serve in the Israel Defense Force (IDF) following graduation from high school. Maytal Baurberg of Milton, Florida and Eliana McCulley of Gulf Breeze, Florida met a decade ago in the Yachad (together in Hebrew) – joint religious school of Temple Beth El and B’nai Israel Synagogue. They maintained contact growing up through social and other activities over the past decade. After graduating from their respective high schools on June 19, 2020 at the Bay Center in Pensacola, Florida they will be leaving for Israel in late July to assigned adoptive homes, Maytal to a Kibbutz less than three kilometers from the Gaza border and Eliana to a Kibbutz in the western Galilee. Both Maytal and Eliana have gone through separate Garin Tzabar intensive screening programs here in the US for young adults ages 18 to 24 who elect to serve in the IDF as Lone Soldiers. The Garin Tzabar program facilitates service in the IDF and provides a support system for Israelis and Diaspora Jews who do not have parents in Israel. Maytal explained that it is not unusual for U.S. citizens to serve in the IDF as Lone Soldiers. Thousands of Jews and non-Jews from across the world who feel an obligation serve in the IDF through the Mahal and Garin Tzabar programs. Beyond the Matrix 24JUNE2020 - PODCAST
Sheila Meyer is the executive director and founder of A Time for Dance. A performing arts studio for the Orthodox Jewish Community of Los Angeles is in its 16th year. The foundation for her lifelong love for dance began at age 6. She studied under many of Atlanta's finest dance professionals. She has studied tap, ballet, jazz, hip hop, gymnastics and Israeli dance. After receiving a bachelors in psychology, Sheila took her childhood dream and made it a reality by starting her own dance studio in 2000 in Georgia. Moving to LA in2004 she made it her mission to start spreading her love of dance with the community in2004. In 2010 she founded a non for profit Yachad Ballet Ensemble, an opportunity to give back to the community while doing Jewish outreach through dance. Sheila performed in Yachad dances ballets “the spirit of shabbos” and “ the crown of creation”. Sheila takes pride in providing a professional setting for Orthodox Jewish girls to develop skills and perform without having to compromise their values. She enjoys working with her amazing staff and cherishes the relationships with her students and their families. ABOUT THE COMPANY: A Time for Dance opened its doors in 2004 with two locations. Setting out to provide professional quality instruction and strong technique classes in a warm and heimish environment. Countless girls and young women have had opportunity to train and perform in an environment that is sensitive to the needs of our community. This year we added a new location in Long Beach. Currently, our studio has five studio locations in addition to onsite school locations around the city. We also offer private in home lessons to many families in LA. Our custom in studio or at home dance/gymnastics birthday parties are a big hit. We also offer custom choreography for special events. Each summer, our classes have been an important part of many local camps. Our own Summer Arts Experience has provided space for students to advance their skills, giving them a creative outlet for expression. With a well planned enriching curriculum which includes fine arts, culinary arts and performing arts campers spend the summer developing strong skills while having a great time.We also have a Summer Arts Intensive for teens. In 2009, we established a non profit dance company “Yachad Dance Ensemble West as a vehicle for Jewish outreach through the arts. Our debut women's performances have touched many and 100% of the proceeds were donated to local organizations. A Time for Dance has generously given scholarships to families through Coach Art and Chai Lifeline. A Time for Dance is an integral part of the community and an important part of many young girls lives. Going into our 16th year we wanted to bring more ruach and unity within our dance community. Special holiday dance parties and events helped to bring spirituality into our program and unite or dancers from all parts of the community. Dance is a universal language and the togetherness that has been created within our community will last forever. It is our mission to bring people together through dance. We are looking forward to the next 16 years of serving our community! www.atime4dance.com Instagram: @atimefordance For the FREE download over Chanuka go to: www.franciskamusic.com/free To watch the new music video click here.
