Tasting Notes: Here's an under the radar collaboration between Jim Beam Master Distiller Fred Noe, and Japanese Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo.
Remember when CDs and DVDs had hidden bonuses called "Easter Eggs"? And if you listened or watched long enough, you'd stumble across something amazing? This week the boys bring yet another set of bottles that boast double barrel beauty! Matt brings Legent Bourbon, the bottle that celebrates the collaboration between Beam and Suntory. Drew brings Excellia Reposado, the slightly less aged version of the Anejo featured two weeks ago, but no less complex thanks to the master blending of rested tequila in two different barrels. This episode will end our Double Barrel Theme... for now... The boys give a thorough geek-out on these two bottles, and also make a little time to discuss their favorite albums. Both of these bottles are on the shelves- Legent is everywhere and Excellia from 1139 can still be found with a bit of hunting. Pick them up, share with your friends, and make it a Happy Friday! PS - make sure you listen to the bitter end.

This time Judy, Marlys and Jon compare 3 bourbons: Basil Hayden Toast, Oola Waitsburg Bourbon, and Legent Bourbon. Enjoy.
The American Whiskey Ambassador for the James B. Beam Distilling Company joins Bourbon Lens today to talk about all things Beam and we enjoy some pours of Legent Bourbon with Beth Burrows. We discuss the origin story of this unique finished Kentucky Bourbon which we've not tasted since way back in episode 11 of the Bourbon Lens. It's been a while since that episode and we were excited to be re-introduced to Legent which may have been slightly ahead of its time nearly 3 years ago. Cheers,Scott, Jake, & MichaelBourbon Lens About Legent Bourbon: Legent® is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey partially finished in wine and sherry casks. But it's more than that. It pushes the boundaries for how bourbons can be created while remaining true to the core of bourbon's principles. It's a collaboration between two whiskey legends – Fred Noe & Shinji Fukuyo – and two unique styles of whiskey making. Legent has brought together over 225 years of bourbon-making heritage and nearly 100 years of Japanese whisky artistry. It's a unique collaboration between two of the world's most revered whiskey makers. And just like a traditional bourbon, Legent starts with premium grains, like corn, rye and malted barley, and is aged in select white oak barrels. Three different types of barrels are used to create the unique flavor profile of Legent. Each one imparts its own unique characteristics to this boundary-pushing bourbon. Since his birth, Master Distiller Fred Noe's life has revolved around the distillery in one way or another. Always looking for new challenges, Legent was a chance to do something that nobody's ever done before. Create a unique bourbon by taking everything from his family's 225 years of making bourbon and combining it with the craft of Japanese blending. From Japan to Scotland to Kentucky, Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo has traveled the world over learning, studying and perfecting the art of blending whiskey and distilling spirits. For him, Legent presented numerous unique challenges. Bourbon isn't a spirit that's blended routinely. He also wanted to honor Fred's family heritage and produce a unique bourbon of the highest quality. After years of tasting, testing and refining the recipe with Fred, Legent has become another step in Shinji's pursuit of mastery. Like any bourbon, it all starts with the grains. But unlike any other bourbon, how Legent ends up in your glass is a completely unique process. Fred and Shinji each played an integral, collaborative role in the creation of this truly unique bourbon. For generations, seven actually, Fred's family has been making bourbons loved the world over. Each starts with premium grains, like corn, rye and malted barley, and is aged in select white oak barrels so it can become a traditional bourbon. For most bourbons, this is where their journeys would end. But not Legent. Legent is aged again in sherry and red-wine casks where it picks up several unique flavors. Then Shinji meticulously blends these secondary-finished bourbons with more Kentucky straight bourbon. Blending allows Shinji to balance, add and unlock layers of complex flavors. Whether you're being served Legent by your favorite bartender or you're pouring it for friends at home, this unique bourbon's distinct flavor profile comes to life when the first drop hits the glass. That's why Fred and Shinji collaborated and used generations of knowledge, skill and technique to make sure every sip of Legent is worth savoring and sharing. About Beth Burrows: American Whiskey Ambassador - James B. Beam Distilling Company A New York native, Beth has led a life rooted in hospitality. Raised by a chef, in a family of educators, she started developing her palate early on. Through the years, she found her passion for educating and public speaking- especially on the topics closest to her heart. Beth's love of whiskey came many years later while she was working behind the stick in Louisville, Kentucky. It was there that she quickly fell in love with the history and the chemistry behind American Whiskey and started her love affair with cocktail creation. Her whiskey journey really picked up when Down One Bourbon Bar opened their doors in 2013. Through her development of bar programs and unique creations of whiskey-centric entertainment, she had the opportunity to collaborate with titans of the industry on inimitable and quirky projects directly in the heart of Whiskey Row. Over the span of three years, she moved through the ranks- from server to General Manager, where she garnered respect and praise from both colleagues and guests. Five years ago, Beth joined the team at Beam Suntory. Known for her enthusiasm and approachable style, as an American Whiskey Ambassador, she strives to be the human embodiment of the Kentucky Hug. She utilizes her broad spirits education, industry background, and continued community involvement to help cultivate an unpretentious environment in the world of whiskey, starting right in the backyard of bourbon. Throughout the year, she works with our Distillery teams to remain close to the ever-expanding campus and operations. She also curates educational entertainment, participates in tasting panels, and helps develop new products. In normal times, you can find her at Whiskey dinners and Cocktail Events across the country sharing 226 years of the Family's legacies with friends on their own whiskey journeys. But don't be surprised when you run into her at your favorite cocktail bars, especially the ones with pup- friendly patios. If online is more your speed, you can also catch her on the Sunday Porch Sessions broadcast the last Sunday of every month over on The Blend's IGTV. When she is not spreading the good word of the James B. Beam Distilling Co. or working to uncover the perfect spirit & food pairings, you can find her wandering nature with her camera or on a Netflix binge of documentaries, zombie movies, and her favorite sitcoms for the thirty- seventh time. Beth was recently named as the D&I Chair for The Bourbon Society. This week I catch up with a long time friend, Morgan Weber. Founder of Marfa Spirits Company and someone who just released an absolute RARE offering unseen in today's spirits environment. A Sub $50 1 liter 95 proof Sotol. As many may remember I discussed the nonsense happening in the Mexican Spirits category a while back and the criminal behavior by some in this industry taking advantage of the category. It was nice catching up. Love the guy. Whiskey Neat is a Radio show on iTunes and ESPN 97.5 FM in Houston and is brought to you every week by the following sponsors. This week I had the extreme pleasure to talk to Writer and Director John Pollono to discus his new film "Small Engine Repair" which will premiere Nationwide in Movie Theatres on September 10th. As a father of Teenage daughters I was enthralled by the film and just had to speak to him. A really down-to-earth guy who happens to be a father himself. This great film hit home for me and it was a delight to speak with him. Whiskey Neat is a Radio show on iTunes and ESPN 97.5 FM in Houston and is brought to you every week by the following sponsors. Gather around family as we tell you a heartwarming story. One of Heroes and Villains. This story has everything. A High School Education, High Cholesterol, Haters, and the shortest tiniest attempt at a brand launch you have ever seen. Over the past two weeks, Netflix's "Last Chance U" Coach Jason Brown has completely gone off on someone for simply posting a picture of his product. No insults. No real negative comment was made by the OP. Just simply a picture of a product that he has named "Slapdick: Real Agave Whiskey" Since her post Coach JB has not only unleashed a plethora of sexist, overly graphic, perverse, and hateful comments aimed specifically at her, he has doxed her place of work and encouraged all of his followers to go over to her page and harass her all while accusing her of clout chasing. This archaic and wildly inappropriate behavior is being ridiculed across the Whiskey World and has spawned a wave of support within the Whiskey Community in her direction and led to his distributor dropping him and his products. Today we talk to Chrissy, the victim of his hateful, sexist comments, and break down what actually happened. We are also joined in part by the man who helped break the story and who consequently has the most followers and fans out of anyone else involved, Coach JB included. NATE WOODRUFF. Spoiler alert. This is a clear-cut case and the irony of calling your product Slapdick while acting like a total slapdick is absolutely hilarious. Coach JB elevated this situation and is doing everything possible to burn his own house down while accusing the world of a carefully coordinated competition assassination and clout chasing. Side note. For everyone else besides the elephant in the room, I apologize for my hateful and petty comments. And to Coach JB, Hey man. . . People who clout chase, usually chase someone with clout. That's not you. No one knew you before this and no one will remember anything about you other than your hate-filled and sexist comments and a product pretending to be something it's not. This week we catch up with Todd Grube. He makes his return to the show and we discuss his new job and a peculiar phenomenon in spirits that so few people are aware of. This episode is not an attack at anyone directly but more of just a cathartic discussion over a little-known trend happening in Mexican spirits. This is sure to be polarizing but keep in mind the discussion isn't meant to be an attack on anyone specifically. A cathartic time was had by all. Mark Norman returns to the show to talk about the new Whiskey that he started with his partner and co-host of "We Might Be Drunk" Sam Morril. Mark and Sam love the brown water and have spent the last few months working on a bottle of Rye Whiskey for the Everyman. In typical comedic fashion, we barely discuss it! This week I am rejoined also by frequent guest, headliner in his own right, and owner of the Secret Group in Houston, Andrew Youngblood. We talk about everything from Cancel culture to vasectomies. This week we bring back the great conversation we had with Matthew McConaughey on his new book Greenlights. We hate to miss this week but big things are coming. Please bear with us. ****************************************************************************** We follow up last weeks great discussion with the Bourbon Junkies with the ineffable Matthew McConaughey. We talk about his new memoir, Greenlights. We discuss family, marriage, raising kids and embarrassing ourselves in front of other celebrities. We of course talk about Wild Turkey and I pitch to him a couple ideas that Todd Grube and I came up with. Todd rendered a few graphics for our pitch and you know what.... I think you'd be surprised at his response. Matthew was an interesting discussion and his book can be found everywhere books are sold. The war rages on in the great Tennessee Whiskey Bourbon debate. For decades it has largely been a debate on one particular Tennessee Whiskey, Jack Daniels. Well enter Player 2. The genius mind that is Nicole Austin, General Manager and Head Distiller are George Dickel has led the charge in releasing the new 8yr. George Dickel Bourbon. A Bourbon Labeled product from George Dickel for the first time in decades is challenging the notion that Tennessee whiskey is NOT bourbon. Well of course it is. This week I sit down with Nicole to discuss the new product and to hit the discussion head on and hopefully in a way that has not yet been done before. A good time was had by all. In this episode, chef and entrepreneur Josh Potocki begins with describing his personal journey, before we start waxing nostalgic about the golden age of decadence. Well, for us anyway. It was our scene, different from now - not that there is anything wrong with the current state of affairs. I think it's part of getting old when terms like "Pop-Up" can't help but solicit a huge eye roll. Also if you can take away anything from this episode, it's that your event will inevitably be a lot less cool once you lose control of the guest list. Plus the world started going downhill once "Everyone" was now considered a "Winner." Lastly, we kill some deer. For a good cause. On this weeks episode of The Last Drop, JB & Khody unfortunately have to skip craft beer week this month but that doesn't stop us from having a drink. Khody gets to try the newly released "Legent" Bourbon for this edition of The First Sip. Enjoy!
The one with estrogen. It took 39 episodes but finally TBC guys figured out female guests are much better than their mae counterpart. Aslyn Beringer brought her raspy voiced opinions and banter and it was.... Well,,, Awesome. Top five female/male musicians, tiger v Jack, Grey Miller cocktail, busking, and a movie both Kelly and Ham have seen. Oh and Legent Bourbon is shared.
