Part 1:We talk with Justin Elliott who writes for ProPublica. He describes the results of an investigation he did, with colleagues, to find out the details of a boarding house in Washington D.C. being used by Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republican Members as a residence. The house is owned by wealthy Republican supporter Lee Beeman, and is occupied/run by Rev. Berger as a home for white christian nationalists. It is not clear how much rent is being paid, and not clear how much unregistered lobbying is happening. Former Congressman Ogles, among others, is also resident.Part 2:We talk with Sasha Abramsky, who writes for The Nation. We discuss the various boasts and threats by Trump, who has expressed his desire to take over Canada, Greenland, and possibly other countries. This kind of action is compared to the Anschluss (annexations) by Hitler in the 1930s. While Americans almost laugh at these proposed actions, the Danes and Canadians are not laughing. We discuss what US residents/voters must do to prevent total disaster during Trump and Musk's "smash and grab" campaign. Music: From David Rovics, “The Richest Man in the World Says So”, 2025
Tracy's overheard some praise about Wayne's food at the Bull and suggests a few promotions. But they discover Wayne's leaving for a six-week cruise on Thursday. It's a band gig. Disappointed Tracy offers to cover in the kitchen, and Kenton keen to solve the problem agrees. Tracy heads off before Jolene has had time to think it through. She then realises they should have asked Fallon first. When Fallon offers to step in Jolene admits her mistake. Fallon insists it's fine. As Jill prepares to leave for Sunderland to visit Shula, Leonard feels it's time he went home. Later concerned Ruth and David discuss it and agree they'd like Leonard to stay with them permanently, for Jill's sake. When Ruth mentions it to Jill later, she's shocked to discover that Jill isn't keen on Leonard moving in. She thinks Jill's scared, and that she and Leonard are both hiding their feelings. Khalil needs to research an essay he's writing about farms from a predator's point of view. When he goes to Brookfield to research the Asian hornets, David invites Khalil to tag along to the winter housing with him. They get chatting about beavers and David's really scathing about them. Khalil mentions Neo, who he Kirsty and Rex met last week, then clams up. David knows Khalil's hiding something and persuades him to divulge the information. David returns home in a rage. But Leonard has some news – an old friend's died and the funeral's on Wednesday. He's cut up and David and Ruth sympathise, before David declares he's ready to read Justin Elliott the riot act.

PROPUBLICA has taken on the role abdicated by most mainstream news organizations. Its long form journalism, while controversial, takes on many special interests that escape public scrutiny. While I often don't agree with the slant that they take, ProPublica represents a new frontier for the fourth column. Traditional news outlets make less and less business sense. I wanted to find out more about how long form journalism is going to work going forward and how it will apply to financial regulation. So I spoke to JUSTIN ELLIOTT, an Investigative Reporter at ProPublica. Justin has won the Gerald Loeb Award for business journalism, the Selden Ring Award for a series on the American Red Cross and, with the “Trump, Inc.” podcast team, a duPont-Columbia Award. He co-wrote the story revealing tech mogul Peter Thiel's multibillion-dollar Roth IRA which we talk about here. Justin's Path to Reporting The Role of PROPUBLICA in Long Form Journalism What are its origins? What is its mandate? How is it funded? What is the Role of Journalism in (Re) Establishing Accountability in Society? What is Congress' (and the other branches of government) role in fixing the issues that journalism uncovers? Peter Thiel's $5 Billion Roth What happened? (How did Thiel get assets into a Roth IRA with a $2K cap?) How did this work? (Funding a Roth IRA with low value Founders' shares) The "Law", the Intent of the "Law" and the Variability around the "Law"? Is this a valuation issue as much as a legal issue? Is it wrong? How should we correct a distortion like this? What's next for Justin and ProPublica and how do we find him? 2024 Election Coverage Justin at ProPublica Justin at Twitter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1YOe9GV0MY https://youtu.be/Ao33oyZJuC8 https://www.amazon.com/Wealth-Actually-Intelligent-Decision-Making-1-ebook/dp/B07FPQJJQT Buy "Wealth Actually" Paperback, Kindle and Audio

No cameras are allowed in the courtroom, no binding code of ethics, and records of their activities are incredibly hard to get. So how do reporters uncover the activities of the nine most powerful judges in the country? Justin Elliott is one of the team of reporters at ProPublica who conducted the blockbuster investigation that uncovered the Clarence Thomas corruption scandal. Elliot takes us inside the story and how he reported it. His reporting uncovered the financial ties between Harlan Crow and Justice Thomas: millions of dollars in gifts, benefits, and luxury trips. His newest article revealed strange details: a secret real estate deal where Crow bought Clarence Thomas' mother's house, and let her live in it rent free, and also paid years of tuition for Thomas's adoptive son at a swanky private school.

Lynda asks Paul to fill her in on what happened with Justin at the Eurovision committee meeting. Paul does so, explaining how Justin went back on his word. He just doesn't care. Lynda declares they need to make him care. She rings Justin to set up a meeting, at which she and Paul work together to secure money from him for the Eurovision event. Justin puts up a fight to begin with, but they use Lilian's participation in the event to twist his arm. Afterwards, Lynda and Paul celebrate their success – if they can take on Justin Elliott just think what else they could achieve together!

In this episode we discuss how Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has accepted tens of thousands of dollars' worth of gifts since joining the court, including $1,200 worth of tires, valuable historical objects and a $5,000 personal check. 1 He also received batteries and a jacket. If you like our content, please become a patron to get all our content ad-free. Mia, Jim and Justin are enjoying hot cross buns at the Bull. Jim reminds Justin about his shift at the shop tomorrow, while Mia wants a chat. She admires Jim for taking a stand for what he believes in, but she can't agree with him on his objection to the electric vehicle charging station plans. She's in favour of such schemes, pointing out their importance for the future. Jim agrees in principle. He just doesn't want them in inappropriate settings, citing the potential increase in traffic. But Mia's determined to stop his protest. Both claim to have local support. Jim blurts out that Mia's support comes from fat cat Justin Elliott. This is new information for Mia, and Jim backtracks, advising her to forget he said anything. Later Mia tackles Justin, who's circumspect about his involvement. Mia assures him she's on his side, and if he wants her help with a counter protest, she's available. Lee wants Helen to tell her parents about Rob. She doesn't agree. She has all the steps to protect herself and her children in place, and she wants to keep things in proportion and not let their lives be disrupted. However Lee's unable to fend off suspicious Pat and Tony, and tells them the news. Helen tries to reassure her worried parents, and promises she'll keep them informed, but she doesn't want anyone else to know. Helen's angry with Lee for taking away her control, but soon concedes he acted for the right reasons. She can cope with this. There's no evidence Rob's planning anything.
