What are you doing to make real human connection? Making Conversations about human connection Count! "Digital connection is the junk food version of real connection. So you must have boundaries within yourself that your digital following is not the same as your friends and family.." Simone Heng, Making Conversations Count - (September 2022) Psst! Low on data? Here's a lower bandwidth version for you. Avoid digital junk food and make REAL human connections! How much are you doing to proactively maintain the connections in your life? Are you hiding behind your device's screen all day, every day, or are you actually making appointments to take your conversations out into the real world. Doing so is far more important than you might think. For one thing, it helps you to avoid loneliness. Simone Heng is an expert in human connection and has written a book called The Secret Pandemic. She's also delivered a talk at Google. It's a book that's all about keeping real connections in the lonely era of an internet first community. Wendy and Simone discuss the importance of human connection in a very internet-centric 2022.   You'll learn.... Human connection with social beginnings Keeping your head down and staying safe Loneliness is always seeking the engagement Challenges of having a purpose Simone's conversation that counts   A poignant moment from the episode: "In the book, I give this connection challenge to go through your most used messaging app in your phone, whatever that's WhatsApp. Maybe use SMS or Facebook and just go through the DMs and scroll back and think, who have I not heard from in the last six months to a year on this? And the names will pop up jog your memory. And the second source think about who tends to self isolate. So we all have friends who are introverts to extroverts on a spectrum and your introverts will tend to have made the pandemic an excuse to go deeper within themselves." In this episode we mix things up a bit with all things junk food and specifically facts and figures. For example, did you know that one can of coca-cola has 10 teaspoons of sugar in it? Or how about the mystery (and very grim) something you'll find in 48% of fast-food restaurant soda fountains… any ideas what that may be? And… (and this is not a joke) how many cows does it take to make a hamburger? (The true answer is far from amusing…) How many years will French fries and hamburgers stay looking the same as the day you purchased them? All this and more is discussed in today's episode where I pull back the curtain, not only on the craziness that is junk food but also on the wider conversation of why do we even still have fast food joints and what are they really costing us? Listen in to today's daily devotion from Pastor Greg Laurie. To get Pastor Greg's devotions delivered to your inbox, just go to harvest.org/devo. --- “The instructions of the LORD are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.” —Psalm 19:7  Not long ago I read about a personal trainer who was in perfect shape. He ate the right foods and loved to exercise. But most of his clients were overweight, and he couldn't really relate to what they were going through. To better understand their struggles, he decided to intentionally gain 70 pounds. He started by changing his diet. Instead of his usual healthy food, he ate fattening foods. It was exhilarating to him because at first there was no difference in his body. He still looked good. But then he started to notice some changes. First to go were his abs. Then he started getting flabby. He found that his blood pressure was going up, and he was tired all the time. He felt lethargic and depressed. To me this is a picture of what it's like in the Christian life when we start going in the wrong direction spiritually. Instead of nourishing ourselves with the message of God's Word, we fill our lives with spiritual junk food. We all have those moments when we stumble, when we trip up, when we make the wrong decision, when we think that wrong thought and need to repent. When this happens, we need a spiritual reboot. We need to be revived and refreshed. The Bible tells us, “The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple” (Psalm 19:7 NLT). If you want to be a growing Christian, if you want to produce spiritual fruit, then you need to be a Bible studying Christian. As believers, we are either progressing or regressing. We are either going forward or going backward. And the moment we stop our forward momentum is the moment we begin our backward regression. --- Learn more about Greg Laurie and Harvest Ministries at harvest.org. Welcome to July 21st, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate making a difference and the good things that come in small packages.  Project Harmony founded National Be Someone Day to help end child abuse and bring communities together through education and awareness. They remind us that it only takes a few seconds to make a difference in a child's life and by taking the pledge to report what we see, the results can last a lifetime. Today there are so many worthwhile organizations that help children, and if you feel compelled to “be someone” for a child in need, check out all the great things happening in your own community. If your taste for junk food needs some inspiration it might be time for a taste bud vacation. Packaged foods in one form or another took off in the 1800s when the process became commercial. While snacks that come in cans, bottles and cellophane are not necessarily more appealing, the added sugar, salt and fat are downright addicting. Enjoy a guilt free excursion today with a virtual tour of snacks from around the globe. Our Aussie friends are celebrating National Lamington Day with sponge cake squares covered in chocolate and coconut. In Canada the favorite messy snack is poutine or French fries covered in cheese and gravy. And across the pond there are Jaffa Cakes and crepes. You may not be able to hop a plane for all your cravings, but on National Junk Food Day, you can certainly appreciate the convenience of your hometown favorites.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Another young QB signed a big money deal is Kyler Murray has agreed to a 5-year, $230.5 million deal. Poni put the timeline out there for the Steelers – they have 5 years with Kenny Pickett to win a Super Bowl under his rookie deal or it gets significantly harder to get the job done. The guys discussed people paying in the thousands to see a country singer and stand in a muddy field tonight.  Penguins insider Mike DeFabo joined the show. Poni got right to the point asking why the Penguins signed Kasperi Kapanen to a 2-year deal. Mike said it's somewhat puzzling, but the team obviously believes in his potential even after a bad season. The guys asked Mike what went into the John Marino deal that sent him out of Pittsburgh. Mike is still curious about Jason Zucker and what his future is in Pittsburgh. Mike mentioned a few young guys that the Pens need to rely on next season, including PO Joseph and Ty Smith.  National Junk Food Day.
