This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to review the film adaptation of August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson" directed by Malcolm Washington. The film follows the lives of the Charles family as they deal with themes of family legacy and more, in deciding what to do with an heirloom, the family piano. Notions of weighing one's own family history and legacy against sacrificing it to help push forward in meaningful ways is at the core of the story, the hosts discuss their own perspectives in how to balance staying rooted in Black history without remaining stuck there and striving for progress personally and in a larger societal sense. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Corey Hawkins, and Skylar Aleece Smith.

We've already reviewed the two big movies of the week -- "Wicked" and "Gladiator II" -- so we turned to a couple of new movies streaming on Netflix on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day. The first is "Spellbound," an animated, musical fairy tale starring Rachel Zegler as a teenage princess trying to save her parents, the king and queen, who've been turned into monsters. It's colorful and vibrant but unoriginal, and the songs from the legendary composer Alan Menken are just so-so. Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, John Lithgow and Nathan Lane are among the star-studded supporting cast. A better choice on Netflix is "The Piano Lesson," based on the Pulitzer prize-winning August Wilson play. John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler, Samuel L. Jackson, Corey Hawkins and Ray Fisher star in this story about an African-American family debating what to do with a piano that's an important heirloom. And in our movie news livestream, we discussed the week's major releases, Sebastian Stan, Jussie Smollett, and our dear friend Amy Nicholson being named the LA Times' new film critic. So well deserved! We won't be going live the Friday after Thanksgiving, but check back with us at our YouTube channel at Noon Pacific time on Dec. 6. The hosts of Becoming Buffy join us to put the creator of Buffy himself on trial. Accused of misconduct, bullying, and more, Joss Whedon's fall from grace has been well documented. Allegations from actors like Charisma Carpenter, Ray Fisher, and Gal Gadot have soured Whedon's reputation—and perhaps his legacy. Join us as we discuss what we make of these issues, how they relate to the wider entertainment industry, and how they affect our perception of Buffy and other Whedon creations we consume.   Hear us discuss… Who is Joss Whedon? Whedon's creative control over scripts Toxic sets and writers' rooms Re-using your own terrible gags Is Joss Whedon CANCELED?   Trigger warnings Abuse, assault, infidelity, misogyny, racism, sexual harassment/assault
