What's up with "I Buried My Wife and Danced on Her Grave?" It's an old tune with an interesting title, with connections to blind pipers, Clare fiddlers, pookahs, and… wool pants. To close out Season 10 of Irish Music Stories, host Shannon Heaton unravels strands of melody and history, with help from the guitar player two rooms away. _________________ For playlists, transcripts, links to videos, companion essays, and to contribute to this project, please head to https://shannonheatonmusic.com/ims

Ep 595 - Drunk: How we Sipped, Danced and Stumbled Our Way to Civilization Guest: Dr. Edward Slingland By Stuart McNish “It is humanity's oldest indulgence,” says Edward Slingerland, the author of the book “Drunk.” Slingerland posits that drinking intoxicating beverages has shaped human history and played a crucial role in the rise of the first large-scale societies. Drawing on evidence from archaeology, history, cognitive neuroscience, psychopharmacology, literature, and genetics, Slingerland uncovers the role alcohol played in enhancing creativity, reducing stress, and building trust. “Why we like to drink is still a bit unclear; was it an evolutionary hijack or did we adapt to consuming fermented beverages? The subtitle of his book is, ‘How we Sipped, Danced and Stumbled Our Way to Civilization,'” Slingerland says. “Humanity's 10,000-year desire for alcohol is not an evolutionary mistake – it was a crucial element in building civilization.” Slingerland says that alcohol disarms our prefrontal cortex. He says, “It dulls that part of our brain that is always trying to control things, that's looking for threats, that trying to remain logical. And when the prefrontal cortex is disarmed, we relax with each other, we let go enough to trust and share.” In other words, alcohol has and continues to play an important role in people getting together socially, diplomatically, in business, and romantically. We invited Dr. Edward Slingerland, the author of “Drunk,” to join us for a Conversation That Matters about how responsible consumption of fermented beverages has multiple benefits. Most researchers who study alcohol focus on what it does to your body. Edward Slingerland is more interested in what it does to your friendships. In his book Drunk: How We Sipped, Danced, and Stumbled Our Way to Civilization, the University of British Columbia professor argues that alcohol has functioned for thousands of years as humanity's most important social lubricant, and that the modern war on drinking is costing us something we can't easily replace. He and Coleman dig into the anthropological origins of alcohol, why drinking has always been communal, and why giving it up isn't as simple as your doctor thinks. Slingerland argues the loneliness epidemic and the sobriety trend may not be a coincidence. They also touch on Slingerland's background in early Chinese philosophy, and the surprisingly direct path from ancient Daoist texts to a book about getting drunk. Learn more about your ad choices. International Women's Month SeriesAdrienne Pabst is the President of iHeartMedia's Strategic Partners Group leading a billion-dollar portfolio of the company's largest Fortune 500 advertisers. Her team partners with top marketers and agencies to create large-scale partnerships across broadcast radio, podcasting, digital, and live events. On top of that she's built and led some of iHeart's most important client relationships, helped shape the company's modern go-to-market approach and she's done it all from one company for 18 years. What I love about this conversation is what 18 years actually means. It doesn't mean standing still. It means Reinventing yourself over and over again to keep growing, keep leading, and keep earning your seat.Adrienne's first Reinvention happened at 14. She wanted to be a ballerina. Danced her whole life. Then she got a job at a dry cleaner and felt what independence actually was for the first time. Not the work itself. The paycheck. The control. That moment shifted everything.Motherhood brought another. She was climbing fast, then had her son and hit a wall. So she stepped back. Took a smaller role. Gave herself room. Most people don't talk about that kind of Reinvention. The kind where you choose less so you can show up better. Then the pandemic opened a door that never would have existed before. The national role she wanted had always been a New York job. Suddenly location didn't matter. She pitched hard. She got it.We also talked about what's changed in how we work. The expectation to respond in thirty minutes. Volume going up while quality comes down. Her fix now is simple: three priorities a week. That's it.On mentorship, most of hers have been men. She's honest about that. What she focuses on now is leading by example. Being the person people can come to without a formal meeting. And on the personal side, she's figuring it out like the rest of us. Micro conversations with friends. Two minutes just to say I love you. Calling her mom on the commute. Reinvention is rarely one big moment. It's a series of small choices that compound over time.Connect with Adrienne:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/adrienne-pabst-57307624/THE RE:INVENTION EXCHANGE - for more Inspired Content, Blogs, Podcasts, RE:INVENTION Virtual Chats, or to buy a copy of my book RE:INVENT YOUR LIFE! Sponsored By: → My one-stop shop for quality supplements: https://theswellscore.com/pages/drg Episode Description Your body isn't betraying you. It's been trying to reach you for years — and it's been screaming because you stopped listening. Ashleigh Di Lello is a brain coach and creator of Bio Emotional Healing — but she didn't arrive here through academia. She arrived through four years of fighting for her life as a teenager, a failed surgery that stole her Broadway career and her ability to walk, nerve pain in nearly ten areas of her body, and a night on her bedroom floor when she finally ran out of ways to keep trying. What she built from that breaking point is one of the most embodied frameworks for chronic pain and nervous system healing Dr. G has come across — because she didn't just study it. She became her own guinea pig and got her life back. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why the brain creates pain as a protective mechanism — and how your life experiences, not just your injuries, determine where and how intensely you feel it • Why people who do everything right — the protocols, the diets, the biohacking — still can't heal, and what's actually missing from the equation • How to begin rebuilding trust with a body you've been at war with, and why compassion isn't just emotional — it's neurobiologically required for your brain to change If you've been told your scans are clear but the pain is very real, or you've tried everything and still feel stuck — this episode is the missing piece. Lonny Cain shares his memories of the joy he felt when his parents danced.
In 2019, a group of American college students arrives in London for a short study abroad program—excited, restless, and eager to experience everything they can in a few nights. During a visit to the Tower of London, the tour turns heavy as the group hears stories of imprisonment, execution, and the long shadow of Henry VIII's reign. Most of the students fall quiet. One doesn't.A student from another school treats the history like a comedy routine—mocking the dead, laughing at the warnings, and pushing the moment past discomfort into outright disrespect.Later that night, while the city sleeps and the rest of the group is scattered between pubs, hotel rooms, and late-night streets, the trip jolts into chaos. A loud knock. A rushed meeting. A sudden hospital visit. And a question that lingers long after London: was it only bad luck… or did something answer back?#RealGhostStoriesOnline #TowerOfLondon #TrueGhostStory #Paranormal #HauntedHistory #LondonGhosts #StudyAbroad #Unexplained #CreepyStories #GhostPodcastLove real ghost stories? In October 2024, Rhiannon Whyte, a 27-year-old mother, was finishing her shift at a Walsall hotel when she was targeted by a man she had spent months helping. Deng Chol Majek didn't just kill her; he stalked her to a deserted train station and attacked her 23 times with a screwdriver—19 of those wounds were to her head. But the most disturbing part? Moments later, while emergency lights flashed in the distance, Majek was caught on CCTV buying beer and dancing with friends...

This week on General Hospital (Jan 12–16, 2026) was tense and emotionally heavy, with the trial driving nearly everything. Much of our discussion focused on Alexis, whose role shifted once she learned Trina and Kai were with Drew the night he was shot. Her choices — and the moral gray area she navigated with Diane and Sonny — showed just how boxed in she truly was.In court, reasonable doubt ruled, but the verdict didn't bring clean closure. Fallout lingered for Dante and Chase, while chaos exploded at the Quartermaine house as Tracy, Ned, Olivia, and Drew collided, ending with Olivia pulling a rifle on Drew and Laura later forcing a fragile truce. We also covered Molly and Cody taking a sincere, slightly uncomfortable step forward, Anna's disturbing isolation and psychological manipulation, and the growing uncertainty around Faison's shadow. Valentin, Carly, Brennan, and Cullum continued taking risks that feel ready to unravel.Plus: Britt and Jason's axe-throwing date and concerns about old patterns, set changes, legal nuance, cast news, and a listener theory that Drew could be Shiloh.Hosts Amanda and Shannon break it all down in their weekly recap.
Some of us may have overindulged during the holidays, and some of us may be trying a Dry January — or at least rethinking our relationship with booze. This is the time of year when we might notice how much alcohol has woven itself into our social lives, our stress management, our celebrations. Charles Knowles is a Professor of Surgery at Queen Mary University of London and Chief Academic Officer at the Cleveland Clinic London, and his new book is called Why We Drink Too Much: The Impact of Alcohol on Our Bodies and Culture. He joins us today to explain why problematic drinking isn't defined by how much we consume, and what we really need to know if we want to change our relationship with alcohol. And then in the second half of the show, we'll hear from philosophy professor Edward Slingerland, who will share ideas from his 2021 book Drunk: How We Sipped, Danced, and Stumbled Our Way to Civilization. Paul Longworth and Albert Alfonso welcomed a man into their home — and paid the ultimate price. What began as an act of kindness ended in a nightmare. When neighbours noticed something strange, police were called, and what they found defied belief: two men murdered, dismembered, and disposed of in suitcases.
In this sermon, Pastor Nathan discusses how God's holiness and mercy transformed King David making him into a very different kind of king than any that came before him, or after him.

BRING IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC TO THE WORLD FOR 20 YEARS On July 28, 2005, I released the very first episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. This was not my first podcast. There were four others that I released first. All of them are still available to this day. Though one podfaded. When I started, I was publishing the Celtic Music Magazine every week. I started podcasting to promote Celtic bands, but mostly I wanted to promote my own band, Brobdingnagian Bards. It was a new and exciting way to get my music heard. But something happened along the way. It became less and less about my band and more about how I could help bands be heard. And it worked. In fact, I featured a total of 79 Celtic bands in the months that followed in 2005. That includes Brobdingnagian Bards and my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers project. Here are some of the bands who were featured. 1: Susan Hamlin, Three Quarter Ale, Dust Rhinos, Cluan, Fathom, The BorderCollies, Tara's Fire, Paul McKenna, Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats, Brobdingnagian Bards 2: StoneRing, The Slip, Hugh Morrison, Caladh, MacTalla Mor, Lenahan, The Bloody Irish Boys, Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer, Celtic Stone 3: The Barley Boys, Contea, Queen's Gambit, Highland Fling, Michael Murphy and the River Shannon Band, Amadan, Raymond McCullough, Bow Triplets, The Rogues 4: The Irish Experience, Cairde na Gael, The Black Irish, Avalon Rising, Heather Gilmer and Jeff Moore, Sarah Dinan, Bedlam Bards, Emerald Rose, Kristen Roger, Heather Dale, Serious Kitchen, Empty Hats 5: Rise, Ed Miller, Tullamore, Paisley Close, Cantiga, Thomas "Doc" Grauzer, Cady Finlayson, Rimbo, Don Grieve, Black 47 6: Moch Pryderi, Enter the Haggis, The Patched Hats, Seelie Court, Eric Benson with The Boatrights, Ali Benson, 3 Pints Gone, Sligo Rags, Angel's Share 7: The Tea Merchants, Keltic Kaleidoscope, Brothers 3, EJ Jones, Shays Rebellion, Marc Gunn 8: Niamh Parsons, Flook, Willie McCulloch, Gan Fidil, Pol Mac Adaim, The Elders 9: Tears for Beers, Clandestine, Stonering, Athas, Carl Peterson You can see the full list on the website. Many of these artists are no longer performing. What's more interesting is that about a quarter of these artists are still making new music to this day. Today, I will highlight some of the amazing Celtic bands that are still performing after 15 - 20 years. I started my list with three perennial favorites of mine who've been on the show for a long time and are still performing: Poitin, Ed Miller, and The Gothard Sisters. Admittedly, The Gothard Sisters were a late addition to the show, coming on in 2010. But of all the bands, they are to me a shining beacon of this podcast. Because you can see them grow and develop as musicians and songwriters over the course of this show. So I had to include them. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! ‘Dancing Mania' - in which people spontaneously danced to exhaustion, some until they broke their ribs and subsequently died, took hold of Aachen, Germany on 24th June, 1374. We still don't really know why. Had the victims ingested ergot, a mould from rye bread that can inspire hallucinations? Was it a hysterical mass response to a stressful and traumatic environment? Or a kind of pre-smartphone flashmob? In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider the likely causes and cures for this curious episode, learn about the equally extraordinary phenomenon of Tarantism, and play ‘guess the Saintly disease'... Why did David dance? Because he knew something many of us forget: when God gives access, shame loses its grip, enemies fall, and joy erupts. In this powerful, revelatory message, Pastor Rod Parsley breaks down Psalm 25—verse by verse—unpacking 25 divine blessings God promises His people. From divine guidance to shame reversal, covenant favor to supernatural redemption, this Word will stir your soul and set your feet to dancing again. Whether you've battled shame, pain, or betrayal—there's a breakthrough in this message. David danced because he knew who his God was—and now, so will you. Expect joy. Expect revelation. Expect freedom. Join us for “Why David Danced” and experience the kind of praise that rises from a heart fully restored.
