SPOILER ALERT Criston Cole wanted a blaze-of-glory death song. Instead, he got arrows and immediate irrelevance. This week on Thumb War, we're breaking down House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 6: Faceless Man or The Butcher's Ball?, aka the episode Rachel correctly renames The Hubris and the Humbling. We get into the Butcher's Ball, Black Aly shutting Criston Cole up, Alicent and Helaena being absolutely terrible at escaping, Rhaenyra trying royal customer service and hating every second of it, Daemon badly hiding his extremely white hair under a helmet, and the mysterious “Faceless Man” who may just be some guy. Plus: Rhaena's missing Sheepstealer scene, Jeyne Arryn's Moon Door hobby, Mysaria getting ruthless, Corlys and Alyn's daddy issues, Aegon asking if he's a bad man, Tyland joining the world's funniest grave-digging trio, and Alice Rivers casually revealing five dragon eggs. In this episode, we continue our weekly recaps of the third season of the hit HBO original series from the Game of Thrones universe, House of the Dragon, starring Emma D'Arcy, Matt Smith, and Olivia Cooke. We discuss whether it was a good idea for Rhaenyra to send Alicent to find Aemond, and we debate whether Daemon's actions in this episode have damaged Rhaenyra's support in King's Landing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
#houseofthedragon #gameofthronesuniverse Ser Criston is denied his greatest desire. Alicent continues to test the limits of Rhaenyra's mercy after her latest escape attempt. Rhaenyra continues to struggle with her duties as Queen. Ser Gwayne has a tense reunion with his ward and cousin after his retreat from the battlefield, but his presence pays off in a big way when a threat is revealed. Aegon makes a decision about his future. Rhaena is given a stark warning after breaking a promise. Hugh and Ulf make errors that may negatively impact their Queen.
House of the Dragon delivers a pretty big character's death this week. Unfortunately, David Foster didn't show up in time to write a song about him. Whoops! Sorry bout that erasure from history. Meanwhile, another pair of cousins gets the tingles and Alicent betrays her son. Again. Just another day at the office! Ser Criston Cole finally meets the end he always swore would come with glory — except there's no glory in it at all. And as Rhaenyra's grip on the Iron Throne starts to slip, the people closest to her start slipping away too.

Jason and Rosie cover a packed episode: Criston Cole is killed in the Riverlands by Black Aly (Alicent Blackwood), Alicent and Helaena are pulled from the Red Keep's walls, and the small council splits over torching Tumbleton, with Daemon and Rhaenyra clashing hard. Lord Borros snubs the queen and sends a mysterious "belt" instead of himself. Episode 5 of Season 3 of House of the Dragon had a whole lot going on. And, for the most part, they pulled it all off quite well. There is tension building between Daemon and Rhaenyra. Meanwhile, Aemond, with the help of Alys, is recovering his strength and confidence at Harrenhall. Ditto for Aegon, whose worldview is significantly challenged by Larys. Add in Sir Criston Cole accepting his fate, Alicent and Haelena attempting to escape, Ormund Hightower grooming Daeron to be a true challenger for the throne, and a shockingly gruesome discovery at the end of the episode, and what you have here is more classic Game of Thrones intrigue and storytelling. Alicent and Helaena search for a way out of the city, Alys Rivers tightens her hold over a recovering Aemond, and Ormund begins positioning Daeron as a rival king. His journey becomes a years-long battle against monsters, gods, temptation, grief, and his own worst instincts, while the family he left behind struggles against the suitors consuming his kingdom. The war is no longer being fought with dragons alone. Sarah and Will break down House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 5, "Unbowed and Unbent," as unrest spreads through King's Landing and every side begins using manipulation, insurgency, religion, money, and guerrilla warfare to gain an advantage. They discuss Ormund Hightower's campaign to undermine Rhaenyra, the violent attacks against the Gold Cloaks, and Daemon's growing frustration with how the city is being governed. They also examine Rhaenyra and Daemon's conflicting ideas about power, legitimacy, faith, and what it truly means to rule as a Targaryen. Elsewhere, Alicent attempts to protect Helaena and her unborn child, Mysaria finds herself caught between competing loyalties, and the damaged relationship between Aegon and Aemond reveals how deeply their childhood resentment continues to shape the war. Sarah and Will also explore Ormund's influence over Daeron, Criston Cole's brutal campaign through the Riverlands, Oscar Tully's military tactics, and how the nobles and common people of Westeros are being sacrificed for a conflict built around one family's bloodline. Then, the conversation shifts to the final season of The Bear. Sarah and Will share their thoughts on the season's one-day structure, Carmy's conclusion, Sydney and Tina's expanded roles, and why Episode 7, "Caramel," feels like a spiritual successor to the fan-favorite episode "Forks." They also discuss the series finale, the growth of Richie and the restaurant staff, the moments that worked—and one particular job interview that did not—before ranking all five seasons of the acclaimed series. Topics include: • The Gold Cloak murders and unrest in King's Landing • Ormund Hightower's strategy and support for Daeron • Rhaenyra and Daemon's battle over power and legitimacy • The role of faith, culture, and public favor in Westeros • Alicent, Helaena, Mysaria, and the unborn child • Aegon and Aemond's lifelong sibling rivalry • Criston Cole's legacy and the Riverlands guerrilla campaign • The Bear series finale and final-season reactions • Why "Caramel" continues the character growth of "Forks" • Sarah and Will's complete ranking of The Bear We discuss House of the Dragon strictly from the perspective of television viewers who have not read the source material. David and Jean take a scene by scene approach to "Unbowed and Unbent," an episode that shifts gears from the psychological intensity of the earlier run into something more mechanical, moving pieces into position for the back half of the season. Kristen Cole gets the lion's share of attention, with Jean making the case that Cole's entire identity is the product of a man who never got over rejection, and David walking through the real world history and tactical use of caltrops as Cole's guerrilla campaign hits its limits. The Harrenhal storyline draws pointed criticism for leaning on the tired damsel in distress trope in a show that has set a far higher bar for itself, while Alicent's deeply uncomfortable confrontation with Helena over moon tea opens up one of the episode's most genuinely complex conversations about bodily autonomy, survival, and the cost of power on the women who wield it.Contact UsQuestions or comments? Send us Fan MailThis episode was classic Game of Thrones dialogue driven episode. Like episode 4, this episode was used as a set-up to get us to that next expected battle. But, this episode gave us alot more intrigued and storytelling with some revelations. We find out the fates of Aemond and Tyland Lannister. We got to see how far reaching Ormunds power is as he is wreaking havoc on the Blacks and the Gold Cloaks somehow. Crispy Cole, Alicent, and the White Worm are showing us what they are about, and poor Haelena is once again forced into something she wants no part of. All in all, this episode definitely got me looking forward to episode 6.#houseofthedragon #watchdemthrones #demdragons #demthrones #gameofthrones #blackwithnochaser
House of the Dragon ends on its most brutal image yet — Chanel, Sharmane and Brandon recap an episode where the walls literally close in.
Episode 5, "Unbowed and Unbent," just turned House of the Dragon into a horror movie, and Justin and Greg are still processing the blood on that wall. This is the one where the Blacks' paranoia gets fully justified — and the body count says the worst is still ahead.
To paraphrase Lord Ormund Hightower, "one host is as good as another". Bankole subs in for Ebube this week to discuss another in a growing line of excellent 'House of the Dragon' episodes. Criston Cole is on suicide watch, Rhaenyra and Daemon need both marriage counseling and leadership training and Aegon has forgotten that his most athletic days are behind him. As we reach the mid-point of Season 3 of House of the Dragon, the plot has thickened across multiple fronts. Ormund Hightower has seized control of Tumbleton. As Rhaenyra weighs her options, Aegon's journey hits rock bottom, Cole decides to fight on without the aid of any dragons, Daeron wrestles with being a Targaryen molded through Hightower upbringing, Daemon makes a stunning discovery (as well as a massive decision), and Alicent makes a shocking discovery of her own. All of it has the potential to make the back half of Season 3 even more explosive than the first half was...and that is saying something. The episode blends Weapon X nostalgia, science-fiction horror, and Wolverine's habit of manipulating the people closest to him. Elsewhere, Aegon searches for Sunfyre, Aemond remains missing, and Alicent learns that Helaena is pregnant. House of the Dragon finally shows us Daeron Targaryen — and Chanel, Brandon and Sharmane break down why his hair is the biggest book change yet.
House of the Dragon S3E3 Review: SPOILER ALERT Rhaenyra has King's Landing… but she might also be losing her mind. This week on Thumb War, we break down House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 3, aka what Rachel calls Rhaenyra's Unraveling. The Red Keep is haunted, the music is screaming, everyone is starving, Corlys is furious, Daemon wants to burn the world down, and Rhaenyra decides the best way to win over the nobles is to serve them a beautiful feast of rats. Rachel loved the episode's descent into Targaryen madness. Jason thinks the show keeps cutting away from the exact moments we need to see — especially when dragons are involved. We get into the Ormund Hightower standoff, Alicent and Rhaenyra's weird little soul connection, whether Team Black is falling apart, and why someone needs to make a Downton Abbey-style House of the Dragon episode set entirely in the Red Keep kitchen. Full spoiler recap is up now. No Fire and Blood character had a POV chapter, but HBO's Rhaenyra just did. Though she proclaims victory and aims for a brighter future, Rhaenyra is overwhelmed by problems of the moment and haunted by ghosts of the past. There's an ominous soundtrack and a familiar theme presented as a double edged sword… Like Maester Aemon told Jon Snow and his brother Egg, to become a man you must kill the boy. It's a metaphor for growing into a ruler, but for Rhaenyra it is also quite literal… and the boy is Alicent's child. Until she discovers simultaneously that he's not Daeron, and the war is not over. Paul and Andrea are back, and after last week's devastating Battle of the Gullet, this episode opens with Baela, his betrothed, returning Prince Jacaerys's ("Jace") body to Dragonstone. Rhaenyra is consumed by grief, but when Daemon returns from Harrenhal with news that Vhagar has left King's Landing, she finally agrees to retake the capital.Discussion HighlightsThe Battle of the Gullet — Revisionist HistoryThe hosts note the show's "unreliable narrator" device: the dragonseeds arrived at the Gullet after the battle was largely won, yet Ulf later claims credit for having "been there." They speculate the in-world histories may write Baela (and Moondancer) out of the record entirely — mirroring the books' own unreliable-narrator conceit.Emma D'Arcy's PerformanceExtensive praise for D'Arcy's portrayal of Rhaenyra's grief, compared to a similar physical breakdown moment in Downton Abbey. Special attention paid to the scene where Rhaenyra rebuffs Ser Lorent's comfort.Rhaenyra's Shift to DecisivenessThe hosts track Rhaenyra's arc from "what good would killing him do" to ordering Lorent's death moments later, tying it to Daemon's "did the queen stutter" energy and the prophecy (the Prince/Princess That Was Promised) as a source of newfound resolve.Alys Rivers & the Ruby TheoryA deep-cut theory: when Alys tells Daemon "I'll ask for food and you offer me rubies," the hosts connect it to Rhaegar's ruby breastplate and the Trident — suggesting Alys may be cryptically referencing the eventual fall of House Targaryen, generations later.Daemon & MysariaThe hosts debate Mysaria's actual value to Rhaenyra's council beyond being a confidante/paramour, noting she's stopped functioning as a spymaster despite that being her narrative purpose. They also flag how strange Rhaenyra's inner circle (Mysaria, and eventually Alicent) will look to outside lords. The Alicent MVP DiscussionAlicent is credited as the true architect of King's Landing's bloodless surrender — minimizing violence more effectively than Rhaenyra ever managed, while letting history hand the credit to Daemon. The hosts are far more critical of the Ironrod assault scene, calling it an unnecessary and "despicable" use of the sexual-violence-to-build-sympathy trope, seemingly deployed just to justify the audience enjoying his death.Rhaena, Lady Jeyne & the "Nettles" TheoryThe hosts revisit a fan theory (credited to an unnamed Threads user) that Rhaena may take on the identity of Nettles later in the story. They also debate the parentage of Sheepstealer, guessing at Vhagar or Dreamfire as the likely mother. The Velaryons on the BeachThe "Corlys has more than Rhaenyra" line gets pushback (Rhaenyra still has three living sons). The hosts liken the beach scene to a "secret meeting" and mourn how much House Velaryon has sacrificed for a cause that cost them Laenor and Laena outside of direct battle.Dark Sister's SymbolismDaemon gives Rhaenyra Jace's sword — Dark Sister, historically Visenya Targaryen's blade — for the execution. The hosts read this as deliberate: Visenya is remembered (rightly or wrongly) as the warrior-queen of the Conquest era, foreshadowing Rhaenyra's own turn toward decisive violence. The Execution & the ThroneMixed feelings on how the final walk to the Iron Throne was shot — visually stunning (deliberately echoing Viserys's own labored walk) but "heavy-handed" in symbolism. The hosts push back on audience discomfort with Rhaenyra's visible grief while executing Otto, arguing it's a more honest portrayal than the "affectless" violence typically rewarded on this show.Historical Parallels — Who Is Rhaenyra? An extended comparison to real English queens: initially set up like Elizabeth I (diplomat, problem-solver, besieged claim), but the hosts argue the writing is now trending toward Mary I ("Bloody Mary") — a traumatized, zealous ruler shaped by grief and a singular obsessive belief (the prophecy standing in for Mary's Catholicism). Alicent is compared to Margaret Beaufort — a soft-power operator rather than a battlefield figure.Succession Planning CritiqueThe hosts argue Viserys's biggest leadership failure wasn't naming Rhaenyra heir — it was failing to rebuild his council around people who'd actually support her once he was gone, leaving Otto and Alicent in place far too long.
