Episode 320: JD Clayton is one of the first emerging artists to release music in an era of new leadership at the historic Rounder Records in Nashville. He's an open-hearted guy who got the songwriting bug growing up in Fort Smith, AR and who then found his songs and his way on stage led to organic growth. His 2023 album Long Way From Home got him out on the road in a big way and led to some high profile opening shows. He produced his new album Blue Sky Sundays, a fresh and catchy take on country rock, with his brotherly band. He seems to embody the ethos of his feel-good song “High Hopes & Low Expectations.”

Vineeta and Jordana discussed the merits of a long distance education today on The WCCO Morning News.
The 19th century Swedish philosopher and poet Henri Frederic Amiel wrote one of the most eloquent observations about music, saying “Music is harmony, harmony is perfection, perfection is our dream, and our dream is heaven.” If Amiel is right, and I have a feeling he is, then pairing Andrea Zonn and John Cowan in a setting where they can sing some of their favorite songs both old and new, is bound to take you at least a good part of the way to heaven. With their debut collaboration, the album Andrea Zonn & John Cowan Are The HercuLeons, the Nashville legends make the harmony part sound effortless, and with a cast of all stars behind them, have set their sights skyward. John Cowan and Andrea Zonn already had a harmonious relationship and had worked together in the decades leading up to now, but it was a quirk of having some more studio time together during the pandemic that set the stage for their first full length collaboration as band leaders. Here, Andrea and John detail that story behind their collaboration, as well as stories of their heroes like Leon Russell and Bill Monroe, and contemporaries like Tom Britt, their perspective on their own musical legacies, tales of their time in the shangri-la of western North Carolina's musical past, Green Acres Music Hall, and more, including music excerpts of songs from their new album. Andrea Zonn and John Cowan performing live Songs heard in this episode:“Face Of Appalachia“ by The HercuLeons, from Andrea Zonn & John Cowan Are The HercuLeons“Straight Up” by The HercuLeons, from Andrea Zonn & John Cowan Are The HercuLeons, excerpt“Resurrection Road” by The HercuLeons, from Andrea Zonn & John Cowan Are The HercuLeons, excerpt“Barbed Wire Boys” by The HercuLeons, from Andrea Zonn & John Cowan Are The HercuLeons, excerpt“Long Way From Home” by The HercuLeons, from Andrea Zonn & John Cowan Are The HercuLeonsNoteworthy but not mentioned in our interview is John Cowan's recent book Hold To A Dream: A Newgrass Odyssey, which features a foreword by HercuLeons' producer Wendy Waldman, and is built on a series of John's interviews with heroes like Kris Kristofferson, Rodney Crowell and Loretta Lynn as well as contemporaries like John Carter Cash. April of 1997 finds accomplished, loving wife and mother Judy Smith accompanying her attorney husband Jeffrey Smith from their home in Boston to Philadelphia for a health care industry legal conference. April 10th was going to be sight seeing day for Judy while Jeffrey was attending the conference. She left the upscale hotel where the conference was being held in the morning and never returned that day or any other. Almost 6 months to the day that Judy left Philadelphia hunters found her body 600 miles away in. Pisgah National Park Forest in North Carolina, an area that Judy or anyone who knew her had no known connection. She was found wearing clothing that was not familiar to her family and her wedding ring, cash and and unfamiliar pair of designer sunglasses were found in a shallow grave where she had been placed under a tree. Judy was stabbed in the back several times until the blade reached her spine. Who could have down this to Judy and why? More questions than answers. IF you know anything about what happened to Judy Smith, her disappearance from Philadelphia and her murder in North Carolina, please contact the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office at 828-250-6670

Christmas is a great time to do just that. We Celts have long had an important relationship with the land and our environment. So I'm gonna offer a bunch of thoughts in the coming months. l read an article on “What's The Most Sustainable Christmas Tree?” You can find a link in the shownotes. One of the most-interesting things I read was about Artificial Trees. You might think they are the most-sustainable. But it turns out that they are typically made with some of the worst, most-toxic types of plastic, polyvinyl chloride (PVC). My family prefers real Christmas trees. But there's always a catch, isn't there. The challenge with a regular tree is finding one that is sustainably sourced. Meaning is it shipped from across the country? Or is it locally grown? Or even better, is it a tree you can replant in your yard when the holiday is over? I'll be honest. Replanting is more than we will do. However, did you know you can rent a Christmas tree? Yeah. That's what I said when I read that. It's not available in all areas. But it is possible to rent one. Then it will be planted afterward. If you're artsy, maybe you can build your own Christmas tree. You could use a plant around the house or build a tree from scrap lumber around the house. Do a search for Christmas tree alternatives and you'll find a ton of options. As for disposing of your tree, don't send those Artificial Trees to the landfill. Instead give it to someone, donate it, sell it or repurpose it. That's the best way to keep it out of the landfill. The same goes with regular trees. Sustainable Jungle writes: “Real trees that end up in landfills can be detrimental to the environment. This is because the tree decomposes and produces methane gas, which is 26 times more harmful than CO2 in terms of climate change potential.” So see if there are local collection services or repurpose the tree instead of sending it to trash. 26:12 - Irish Christmas in America "Air_March_Polka - The Snowy-Breasted Pearl, Freedom for Ireland” from A Long Way From Home 31:51 - Brobdingnagian Bards "Bog Down In Christmas” from Christmas In Brobdingnag 36:28 - Screaming Orphans "You Are All Mine (At Christmas Time)” from Happy Christmas Volume 2 39:30 - Mary-Kate Spring Lee "O Little Town of Bethlehem/Celia Connellen” from Carol of the Child 43:13 - THANK YOU FOR SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER! George Ducas is back with a new album, but a decidedly elevated sound thanks to him luring legendary Bakersfield sound producer Pete Anderson back to the country studio. He sat in with Roots Music Rambler this week to talk to Frank and Falls about the new album, the day-to-day of being a Nashville songwriter and a lot more. Ducas even made a public promise to try and get Anderson to come on the show! (We're giddy over this!) As if that weren't enough, Ducas also played the first song he ever wrote (at age 11) during the recording, which was more than a treat, and just the second “live” performance during a recording of Roots Music Rambler. Ducas's new album is called Long Way From Home and Anderson, long-time producer and guitarist for Dwight Yoakam, is very high on the album and his return to producing in the country genre. This was one of our most fun conversations. Ducas really is a great guy and brilliant songwriter. You're going to enjoy this episode. The hosts also offer up their picks for new music for you to discover this week in the Pickin' the Grinnin' segment of the show. I have recently returned from a fair bit of solo travel that included time with friends, family, and some study. There is something special about travelling alone that is uniquely thought provoking. I am reminded of a quote that I’m not able to determine the provenance of but that has long rattled around my head – ‘there is no loneliness quite like the loneliness of a long drive home late at night, having visited worlds that no one else will ever know.’ I’m confident the same can be said of a long overnight flight returning home, too. This mix was recorded live in Vancouver on the first weekend of the trip at my good friend Dan’s groovy inner city pad. It carries throughout a couple of relevant thematic elements, and served as my soundtrack for the rest of the journey. With a DJ booth facing the outdoor terrace, and the terrace offering an elevated view of Gastown, Chinatown and surrounds with all of its urban grit and energy, Dan’s place was a really fun space to catch up with friends and reconnect.

George Ducas is my guest this week on the heels of his new album release “ A Long Way From Home”. This native Texan singer songwriter has been making us proud with his countless songs recorded by Garth Brooks, The Chicks , Randy Rogers & George Jones to name a few , and has earned top spots in CMT videos and a Grammy nomination. This record culminates the best of his writing a singing and there's several favs of mine - however the top spot is “drifter” with his line misfit hippie ( I can totally relate) . JD is an Arkansas born singer/songwriter, who's style blends elements of southern rock, country, and soul. He has been releasing music since 2018, but didn't release his first full length album until earlier this year. He is currently touring that new album, which is titled “Long Way From Home.” In this episode, we discuss JD's new album in the works, talk about when he opened for Hank Jr, and even get into a little bit of duck hunting, amongst other subjects. Hollie started her long walk home after being diagnosed with secondary adrenaline insufficiency following her second pituitary surgery. However, the magnitude of what she was managing afterwards by taking hydrocortisone twice a day was not brought to her attention until she experienced multiple adrenal crises. Months later she was told of the seriousness of her new reality. Hollie recognized her quality of life mentally and physically was deteriorating quickly with this new diagnosis and she was not going to accept this. A heartbreak conversation with a dear from acknowledged that Hollie was far from the person she was - Hollie was "A LONG WAY FROM HOME". This inspired her to start taking steps forward and regain her life. It started her on a CRAZY BUT AMAZING journey. She will empower, inspire and bring you comfort on your journey with adrenal insufficiency. JD Clayton is a songwriter from Fort Smith, Arkansas, whose full length debut record Long Way From Home was released in January of 2023. Clayton has a clear way of communicating the intricacies of life and this record is a gorgeous expression of that ability. We caught up with JD at Bonnaroo 2023. Y'all, I wanna take a second to thank you for supporting this Marinade thing. We caught up with JD in the media tent at Bonnaroo. The day before Morgan Wade and Charley Crockett were milling about. Tyler Childers walked by the spot I was working right after my conversation with JD. I have a feeling we will be talking about JD Clayton in the same breath as those folks before you know it.
