Matt is live from Pride in Loring Park as he interviews attendees!
We're biking from downtown Minneapolis to Powderhorn Park to talk about People's Pride — the local, laid back, non-corporate alternative to Twin Cities Pride. No police either — they've taken sequeerity into their own hands. It's happening Saturday, June 29 at Powderhorn Park from noon to 4 pm. My guest is one of the event's organizers, Luna Zeidner, who talks about the recent origins of this event as an alternative to the big corporate sponsored Pride festival in Loring Park, how organizers have navigated city permitting and security requirements, and why you should come out and enjoy the event. They're also looking for volunteers and donations. For more information on People's Pride at Powderhorn Park: https://www.mplspeoplespride.com/ Donate to support the event: https://www.gofundme.com/f/877th-support-the-2024-minneapolis-peoples-pride Luna suggests that after People's Pride on Saturday, you can show up downtown on Sunday to participate in the annual Taking Back Pride protest of the police and corporate presence at Twin Cities Pride: https://www.instagram.com/takingbackpride/ As an alternative, John suggest showing up to Loring Park's Pride festival on Sunday to take in the corporate sponsorships and sign up to join the FBI: https://www.fbi.gov We also talk to Luna about how selling her car helped her to afford the purchase of a home, while also getting healthier and more connected to her community; her reaction to downtown scooter outrage; and why it's more important than ever to get involved in the lives of young people. If you're going to be successful in real estate, you need to know how to do two things: Set goals and negotiate. Today I'm sitting down with a woman that could write a book about both. Stephanie Gruver out of our Loring Park office transitioned into real estate from the insurance industry and transformed herself both professionally and personally. She will talk about that, her passion for vintage houses, how she lost over 60 pounds since January, and her keys to approaching the art of negotiation. That's all coming up on the Results-Driven Podcast. Reach out to Stephanie here: http://www.stephaniegruver.com/ How are we doing? Have a guest suggestion? Today I’ll be talking with Twin Cities musical icon Leslie Ball. Leslie has performed on theater stages and in music clubs around the region and the country, and her first solo recording “Loring Park” earned her a Minnesota Music Award for best female songwriter. Many musicians, including Helen Reddy and Nick Lowe, have performed and recorded Leslie’s material. In August of 1991, she launched BALLS Cabaret, a weekly experimental stage for artists of any discipline, at any level of experience. BALLS continually wins awards as the best open stage in town, and was cited in The New York Times as a “must-see” while in the Twin Cities. The local press often refers to Leslie as “the den mother of the Twin Cities art community.” We spoke at my studio in North Minneapolis. PART ONE: The Interview PART TWO: A Song PART THREE: Leslie gets to ask the Music Director! You can find Leslie on the web at LeslieBall.com. This episode brings us to the end of the Spring 2018 season of Ask the Music Director, and I want to thank you all so much for listening. I hope you’ve enjoyed meeting this talented group of Twin Cities music makers, and maybe you’ve even learned a thing or two from me, the music director, along the way. What have I learned? That I seem to be drawn to people engaged in work on the fringes. From Tyler Michaels’ new theater company to James Rocco’s avant garde art to Leslie Ball’s weekly experimental cabaret, I always want to hear about the new, the exciting, the cutting edge. I hope the same is true for you as well! I will be back in the fall of 2018 with a whole new set of interviews, but in the meantime I hope you will subscribe to the podcast. There will be a bonus episode or two coming this summer, and I wouldn’t want you to miss anything! Do you have any comments? Questions? Suggestions? You can always reach me on Facebook, @askthemdpodcast, or on the web page askthemdpodcast.com. Send your friends to find us on Apple Podcasts, the iTunes Store, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts—and if you get a chance, leave us a review! It’ll help others find their way to us. Thank you! EPISODE NOTES Episode duration: 53:51 At 40:17 Leslie Ball sings “A Cappella” from Painting It Red (duration: 1:37). The band Cloud Cult is hard to categorize — both musically and lyrically — though it’s been called an “orchestral indie rock collective.” Less in question is the profound and life-giving force of its music. Cloud Cult’s trajectory was altered the day its co-founder and singer-songwriter, Craig Minowa, and his wife woke up to find that their two-year-old son had mysteriously died in his sleep. Live from our studios on Loring Park, we explore the art that has emerged ever since — spanning the human experience from the rawest grief to the fiercest hope.
