Recipe – Oven Roasted Salmon with Fruit Salsa Divabetic was inspired by the late R&B legend Luther Vandross, founded in 2005 by his long-time assistant, Max “Mr. Divabetic” Szadek. Divabetic, a combination of the word “diabetic” with the letter “V” inserted for Vandross, evokes feelings of power and a positive attitude associated with the great divas Luther loved, like Patti LaBelle. started Divabetic in 2003. I sold my first Divabetic t-shirt and donated the proceeds to different diabetes nonprofits until Divabetic became a nonprofit in 2005. I'll be promoting Divabetic's latest mystery podcast, "Tomorrow Is Not On The Menu" available for free on iTunes, BlogTalkRadio and Spotify. This show focuses on sugar addiction and the added sugar in our diets and dispels the myth that weight loss is the be-all and end-all to achieving better diabetes management. Our first podcast, of the year, features guest Rachel Zinman, a yoga instructor and author living with LADA. Rachel shares a Guided Meditation about Compassion. We’re talking about Secrets to Longevity & Diabetes with musical inspiration from Dionne Warwick. Living longer and increasing your life expectancy with diabetes doesn't have to be a chore. From flossing your teeth daily to getting a good night’s sleep, there are simple things you can do to help you live long, happy and healthy life. Dionne Warwick has enjoyed a tremendously long career as a singer. She ranks second to Aretha Franklin as the most charted female vocalist with 69 singles making the Billboard Hot 100 during the rock era (1955–1999). Dionne Warwick once explained her longevity to Jet magazine, saying, "I really attribute it to remaining who I am and not jumping ship, being completely cognizant of what the people ... are accustomed to hearing from me.” Guests include The Lager Queen of Minnesota and Kitchens of the Great Midwest Author J. Ryan Stradal, Deborah Greenwood PhD, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE, Fonzi Thornton, Rachel Stahl MS, RD, CDN, CDE, and Lorraine Brooks. Country music’s brightest star, Maren Morris inspires us to stay strong as we face the challenges of living with diabetes during the coronavirus pandemic. Our Diva Inspiration, Maren Morris has opted to do things her own way and obliterating expectation at every turn on her newest album entitled Girl. Many music experts believe she’s making a bid for the sort of across-the-board pop stardom enjoyed by Pink, Katy Perry and Selena Gomez with this album. Maren’s singing about independence, self-love and the need to reach across the aisle to find common ground. Guests include Author of the Noodle Shop Mysteries: Vivien Chien, Lorraine Brooks, Sara (Mandy) Reece, PharmD, CDE, Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport PhD, Patricia Addie-Gentle RN, CDE, and Alexis Gray. Throughout this podcast we will be featuring music from Maren Morris’s Girl album courtesy of SONY Music.
We’re talking about how to minimize the drama in our diabetes lives with music from the ultimate diva, Maria Callas. Maria Callas changed the way we listen to opera—and charged the ambition of the singers who followed her. Her ability to interpret a wide variety of different roles truly set her apart, establishing her as a phenomenon, an operatic diva. She was able to fully exploit the dramatic strength of her low vocal range as much as the high and bright notes of her high range. Opera takes any type of dramatic story and tries to make it more exciting and more believable with the help of music. Symptoms and situations related to diabetes are often dramatic and come on very suddenly. But how do you react to them? Are you ‘drama queen’? If there’s drama in multiple areas of your diabetes life, be honest with yourself—you’re the constant. Are you creating it? We don’t do anything repeatedly unless there’s something in it for us, so, what’s the payoff? Every time we find ourselves immersed in something that seems overwhelming, we have an opportunity to learn how to deal with challenges better. Guests include Dr. Wendy Satin Rapaport PhD, Jill Weisenberger MS, RDN, CDE, CHWC, FAND, Lorraine Brooks, American Heart and American Diabetes Association's Know Diabetes By Heart Ambassador Rob Taub, Yoga for Diabetes Author and Director Rachel Zinman and Patricia Addie-Gentle RN,CDE. Throughout the podcast we will be featuring music from the Grandiose Stimmen: Maria Callas album courtesy of SONY Music.

This week on We Dig Plants Alice and Carmen sit down with Lorraine Brooks of the Cornell University Cooperative Extension. They discuss the history of the land grant college going all the way back to Abraham Lincoln, and discuss what the Cornell Co-op is doing to educate folks in Central Park and beyond through hands-on, informal research and education, and via organizations like the Central Park Conservancy and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Making sure we have enough trees throughout the country and educating folks on why we need them in the first place is a big part of what Lorraine does, and she recounts some stories of success and frustration as she tries to spread arboreal joy. This episode was sponsored by Hearst Ranch: purveyors of grass-fed beef grazing on the beautiful coast of San Simeon, CA.
