We recorded a thicc episode for you this month with our special guest Sarah, one of the hosts of the podcast Afternoona Asks! Together, we get into the nitty-gritty of red flag and green flag characters and cover a lot of ground: from what makes a red flag red and a green flag green, to the surprising gender dynamics of “flagging” characters at all.Along the way, we mention a lot of our favorite love interests, including Baek Seon of When the Phone Rings, Mr. Gu of My Liberation Notes, Captain Ri of gateway KDrama Crash Landing on You, and many, many more. Welcome to our second episode on the Chinese Drama Lost You Forever, part 2! We jump right into Tushan Jing and Xiao Yao's relationship as the ostensible OTP of the show. From there, we consider just how sad our snake demon man Xiang Liu made us in his determination to push Xiao Yao away, as well as A'Nian's surprisingly poignant maturation arc. This Chinese drama started popping up all over my Instagram feed around the end of 2022, so when Nadira suggested that I watch it curiosity got the best of me. We roped in Jessica from the Daebak K-Rambles Podcast to come along too, and my journey into Xianxia C-Dramas began! Love Between Fairy and Devil is a 2022 high fantasy drama out of China. It's available on Netflix and elsewhere. It is different than anything else I've ever watched. Listen "spoiler-free" for the first half of this episode as we dive into the world of C-dramas. With the summer over, Karen and Cathy share then completely and entirely "objective" thoughts on the winners and losers from this slate of summer dramas. Interestingly, there was no massive hit this summer akin to The Love Between Fairy and Devil last year. Outside of Wei Da Xun, there wasn't any other major breakout star. Yang Zi held her own and brought decent popularity with Lost You Forever Season One but didn't quite capture the same magic. On the flip side, there were quite a few losers, some more serious than others. Take a listen and let us know your thoughts!
We are finally back with a new episode! So sorry we haven't uploaded anything for about 2 months, we just got super busy but we're excited to be back! This is a very special episode because we will be talking about Love Between Fairy and Devil our first xianxia. We were a little hesitant to start this show because it was a high fantasy and the length scared us a bit but were so glad we gave it a chance. We ended up loving every second of this show and even though this episode is over two hours I'm not sure if we did it justice. Even though this episode is really long we hope you enjoy listening!
This episode, we're talking about the in's and out's of the Friends to Lovers trope. We cover what we think makes for a great friends to lovers story, what really really doesn't, and throw in a ton of examples. (Only half of which are Kdramas.) What's Sparking Joy ran a little long this episode, so it won't hurt our feelings if you want to skip to the end (19:36).
