BLACKPINK was in our area and we couldn't _not_ tell y'all all about it. Sharing the same recording space for the first time, we chat about everything we loved about being part of the sea of Blinks to sing with, dance to, and cheer on Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé. Nani? The Sickos are talking about anime? Masaka! But I assure you: it's true! Quinn Welsh-Wilson joins as co-Sicko to get Tom back up to speed, discussing Twelve Kingdoms, Apothecary Diaries, Shangri-La Frontier, Log Horizon, Lazarus, and the first new anime Tom has watched in ages, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Turns out anime is the same as ever: it fucking sucks but also is so good. Confounding stuff.
Hikaru Tanaka, the son of renowned anime voice actor Atsuko Tanaka, has updated his official social media account with a message in memory of his mother, stating that he is "truly grateful to all the people who still express their feelings for her."Atsuko Tanaka, known for voicing iconic anime characters such as Flamme in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Lisa Lisa from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Hanami from Jujutsu Kaisen and of course, the original Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell, passed away at age 61 after suffering a year-long battle with an undisclosed illness. As the summer beings to wane down, Meelz, LJ and AD pull out a critically-acclaimed, universally-loved, and highly-rated banger for Summer at Kame House. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is this week's watch and we go in-depth into the first cour of the series in terms of what makes Frieren such a compelling character, what the plot of this anime lays in the background and foreground, why people love this anime so much and a long-debate between seeing if this or Solo Leveling deserved to be named Anime of the Year 2025.

Cam aka CamCammeii returns after 3 1/2 years as we catch up, talk about some of the newer fandoms she's into, and talk about her growth and changes within the past years. We first kick things off by acknowledging that Cam is the designer behind the new Tales from the Fandom logo, as of 3 1/2 years ago. So a little piece of Cam lives on in each episode promo you see on the social media side of things. Cam and I revisit Genshin Impact and talk about its impact (pun intended) on her video game playing. From her first getting into the game, the characters she enjoys, how it involved her getting a custom PC, and much more. Then we change gears and talk about two anime shows that Cam has gotten into. We delve into the realm of Delicious in Dungeon, and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Cam talks about why these two specifically call to her, the characters and story, and what you can expect from them. The back half of the episode, we're talking all about Cam. Our first Cam-topic is talking about her foray into Twitch streaming. We talk about her motivation into starting Twitch streaming, and what you can expect from her channel. Cam and I also talk about her continued work in the cosplay side of things, from newer characters, to her relationship with her body, and what you may see in the future from her. Plus, Cosplay photography! How cam has continued to hone her photogaphy craft, and what cons you may find her at and how to book with her. This month, we discuss the anime series Frieren:Beyond Journey's End, the anime movie Suzume, and the Sony Pictures animated film Kpop Demon Hunters. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
As far as slice-of-life animes go, Frieren completely shatters the mold with a brand new premise in the fantasy-DnD-adjacent genre and a level of quality (in terms of adapting a manga) that really hasn't been matched before or since its 2023 release. With the eponymous main character experiencing the passage of time so differently than the peers of her past and of the present, it's incredible how well this show treats flashback scenes, the passage of time within the world and its evolution, and the effect of the past affecting characters in the present. It's also gorgeously animated, has a charming soundtrack, and presents its narrative at an unusually relaxing pace, even during scenes where magic is flying across the screen. One thing we can all agree on—this is a one of a kind show that cannot be missed. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.
Mirror, mirror on my phone, who's the baddest? (Us, hello?) This episode, we are joined by a very special guest, Audrey Hall, to talk about the Netflix animated film, KPop Demon Hunters! We get into productive intersection of idoldom and demon hunting that allows the film to explore internalized–and externalized–shame, particularly through the romance of Rumi, the leader of KPop group Huntr/x and Jinu, our kpop demon boy. Back after a mini, unexpected hiatus, we've got a new hot-and-ready episode for you!Prepare yourselves because we're about to get deep in our feelings as we begin our discussion on the show Dying for Sex starring Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Rob Delaney. In this first of two episodes, we start off with our initial, non-spoilery reactions, think about how the show works from a genre and form perspective, and maybe rant a little about why one of the characters really sucks. Content warning: Dying for Sex deals with terminal illness and trauma related to SA. Because these themes are so woven into the show, we won't be able to provide specific timecodes for when they come up in our own discussion, but wanted to make sure you know going in. This episode is long overdue, because we've all seen a cosplay so on point that we instantly thought 'NANI'?!?', and we almost got GTA6 before getting to deep dive into the Grand Line that is Cosplaying. And to get that in-depth, expert perspective on what it means to turn imagination into a life-sized Tanjiro with Nezuko in box, we had to get the Cosplay Royalty that is @Folacosplays, with all the tips, tricks, and vybz that we know and love her for, showing why it's not just a costume, it's a passion. Bonus points if you can guess which of the Freshmen have cosplayed before; Clue: He likes Anime and goes to the theatre. Every effort is made to keep spoilers to a minimum. [School of Everything Else 2025] Neurodivergent elf seeks party for spell-gathering, demon-slaying and appreciating life a whole lot more... Despite our longstanding NO ANIME rule (which nevertheless still allows us to occasionally do shows on the movies we love within that medium, and you folks have been good as gold insofar as overprescribing anime shows when you know it will overwhelm us with volume) this commissions season saw us so in need of emergency funds that we opened the door to not one but two beloved recent series'. However, while we instantly found Delicious in Dungeon to be captivating, funny, charming, hilarious and nerdy in the most appealing easy-sell way possible, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End was much more of a slow-burn. And while we came out the other side appreciating many of the subtleties there were some glaring creative decisions which actively ruffled our feathers. So, to ensure this would be talked about with passion and enthusiasm in a way that would help us see the best in it, we brought in a brace of guests who gave us the lowdown on both the show and the manga. Many thanks to our extremely patient backers for this episode; Tylor, Banzai and Painter47 Guests Alejandra Vargas Bradford Yurkiw

On the Mount Rushmore of the UK Anime Community, the Anime Freshmen have rightly earned our place as trailblazers, and the annual AF Freshie Awards continue to lead the way, much like Rock Lock set the standard for the term 'useless power' in My Hero Academia. We also get a fun question about what swimsuit Mashiro would wear, and Kubo's surprising answer might make you smile. Plus, Kubo attended another mangaka's wedding and shared some heartfelt comments about being the most senior artist in the room now.Outside the world of Bleach, Sam finally showed his fiancée the emotional anime film I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, and we discuss the movie's tearjerking story. And for our My Hero Academia: Vigilantes fans, we dive into the introduction of the mysterious Stendahl and what he means for the series going forward.

Even in its pastel tones, it manages to capture our growing dependence on AI companions from a professional and relational level...but does it work as a narrative beyond its foreshadowing? We examine its surprisingly human themes of moving past the pain of breakups, loneliness in a technologically connected world, and what our relationship with AI means for our relationships with the flesh-and-blood people around us, debating which themes about what makes love special for humans resonate effectively. This week we discuss a machinima form we've not really talked about before - anime. Whilst its one of Ricky's favourite creative forms, for the rest of us its a little out of our comfort zone! We take a look at two films, both made in Final Fantasy 14 (FFXIV), Frieren: Beyond Journey's End by Wheat Tea (released 2 Feb 2025) and Arcadion by Magitek Productions (released 1 Jan 2025). "What's the right age to get married?" From young love to late bloomers, the duo weighs the pros and cons of tying the knot at various stages in life, drawing from personal stories and cultural expectations. With the dice rolled and fate decided, it's time for everyone's favorite storytelling corner — “Daddy, Tell Me A Story.” Joe opens up about the early days of his relationship with his wife, Kelsi, sharing a heartfelt glimpse into the beginnings of a lifelong bond.Next up, the roll leads to a spicy edition of “Parliament of Papas,” where streaming service contracts take center stage. Joe and Kurt unpack the constantly shifting landscape of subscriptions, exclusivity deals, and how it's affecting what families can actually sit down and watch together. Then the energy shifts to pure fandom joy with “What Are You Nerding Out About?” Kurt gushes over his current obsession with Pokémon and 3D printing, sharing how he's blending nostalgia with creativity. That's when Charles bursts in with his own tale — a shout-out to the unsung hero tech guy who saved his dying phone just long enough to rescue what he needed.Joe then brings the anime vibes strong with a glowing recommendation of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, praising its emotional depth and unique storytelling. A quick tangent takes us through the excitement of Stellar Fest and some recent board game adventures before…It's time. Bad Dad Jokes. And with that, Charles flees the scene (a wise move, perhaps?).To wrap things up, the dice bless us with “How Do I…?” Joe and Kurt dive into a meaningful conversation about modeling healthy relationships — how the way we love and communicate teaches our kids what to look for and how to be better partners themselves. So whether you're a nerdy parent, a fan of storytelling, or just in it for the dad jokes, Find your FAMdom right here.Wise_N_Nerdy: Where Fatherhood Meets Fandom

We review Jin-Roh director Hiroyuki Okiura's second animated film, A Letter to Momo, about a young girl that forms an unlikely friendship with a trio of troublesome yokai who through a series of comical misadventures help her to cope with the loss of her father. Released in 2011 after seven years in production, and to seemingly little fanfare on this side of the Pacific, this underrated family film, equal parts charming, comic, and heartfelt, deserves another look. Tune in for the full review! Hey, shounen fans! Today, we're diving into Frieren: Beyond Journey's End for the very first time! We meet the elven mage Frieren and her adventuring party: Himmel the Hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf. After defeating the Demon King (or Lord?), they part ways after a decade-long journey together. Fifty years later, ensuing the death of Himmel, Frieren wishes she had taken the time to get to know him better. Years later, while visiting Heiter, she sort of stumbles into having an apprentice - a war orphan named Fern who Heiter had been looking after. After Heiter dies, Frieren and Fern begin their own journey to learn spells. These first two episodes packed an emotional punch and introduced us to a fantastical new world.
