Join the Crate Coalition: https://discord.gg/sAaG6a7bv4 Lubomyr Melnyk is a composer and pianist of Ukrainian origin. He plays what he calls continuous music, a style whose rigorous technique shares commonality with martial arts. He's regarded as the world's fastest piano player, capable of playing 19 and a half notes per second.     I occasionally get music submitted for consideration to be used in mixes. I don't seek out submissions but if artists or labels are so kind as to send me some music I will take a listen. Last month I got a totally blind email with a link to a new album from Tewksbury. I fell in love with the album instantly. Well, not instantly as the full album is over 3 hours long.  Check it out here... https://tewksbury.bandcamp.com/album/floes-volumes-i-iv Each track is over ten minutes long and they evolve slowly, beautifully as the tape loops, melodies and textures stretch time and space. I liked the album so much that I asked the artist, Douglas Tewksbury, to create a mix and, luckily for all of us, he agreed.  Here's what Douglas has to say about SLOW/FORM: "This mix is a collective of slow, organically unfolding music, songs that reminded me of the importance of reflection, of stillness, of contemplation, of change. A few tracks are from my most recent 4x album 'Floes: Volumes I-IV', and the rest are artists who create slowly evolving works with human voices, with synthesizers, and with pianos, culminating with a stunning 19-minute piano work by the incredible Ukrainian pianist, Lubomyr Melnyk. Music can be such a powerful force to reflect on ourselves and the world around us, and here, I wanted to present a moment of consideration and contemplation on what it means to be a listener, investing the time to take the journey in longer works, to invest oneself in the commitment of deep listening." Thanks to Douglas for creating the mix and for such an excellent album. Third episode in Season II *About the episode Our next stop in the second season of On The Green Track is to explore what sustainable development looks like on a global scale. Together with Continuous Music composer and pianist Lubomyr Melnyk we will discover the connections between travel and music.
This may not be a clear connection at first, but together with our guest, we expand the notion of travel to not only belong to a tourism industry but to be an almost instinct experience or surrender to the world's beauty through art.
This conversation was recorded prior to the current critical situation in Ukraine and as a sad coincidence Lubomyr Melnyk's reflections upon being Ukrainian seem more relevant and thought-provoking than ever

While in Europe, Broderick met and worked with a wide variety of composers, singers, and songwriters including Nils Frahm, Greg Haines, Laura Gibson, Yann Tiersen, Olafur Arnalds, and Lubomyr Melnyk.Broderick was by this time an in-demand session player, engineer, and producer, but kept up a steady stream of his own work on EPs, singles, and film scores, and he accepted composition commissions for dance and the theater. Broderick provided half of many split recordings, including 2009's Blank Grey Canvas Sky with Machinefabriek, 2010's Apple Bobbing At ___ with Penelope Joy, and 2011's Glimmer with Takumi Uesaka. In 2010, Bella Union released his full-length How They Are. From 2010, Broderick's level of activity was matched only by the number of requests for his time from other artists. He contributed to 19 recordings in 2010, 12 in 2011 (including Oliveray's Wonders, one of his projects with Frahm), and ten more in 2012. He and Frahm also completed and released the first album of a three-year undertaking entitled http://www.itstartshear.com. (Interestingly, the artist withdrew from having any kind of social media account.) Broderick also issued the EP Two Songs for Banjo and Voice and the single "I Will Play This Song Once Again" b/w "These Walls of Mine" that year.Broderick was equally prolific in 2013. Among the ten recordings he contributed to were Mark Kozelek and Jimmy Lavalle's Perils from the Sea, Melnyk's Corollaries, and Nadja's Flipper. He also issued the Broderick & Broderick EP and the full-length Float: 2013 Addendum, and he scored director Rodney Evans' award-winning film The Happy Sad. The following year saw the artist move back to Portland for a time and play on recordings by Portland Cello Project, Aidan Baker, Sharon Van Etten, and Sean Flinn & the Royal We. Erased Tapes issued the Broderick and Haines split dub offering Greg Gives Peter Space, The Album Leaf (Featuring Peter Broderick) was self-released, and the eponymous Peter Broderick + Gabriel Saloman was issued by Beacon Sound. While Broderick played on over a dozen records by other artists in 2015, his own recording and touring activities were equally intense. He collaborated with French artist Félicia Atkinson as La Nuit to release Desert Television and issued the EPs X Luzern and COTN RMXD and the acclaimed full-length Colours of the Night. In 2016, Broderick cut the stripped-down piano-and-voice album Partners with Tucker Martine. (Inspired by John Cage's writings, it featured a reading of the composer's "In a Landscape.") He also produced Brigid Mae Power's acclaimed self-titled Tompkins Square debut album. The pair were married shortly thereafter and moved to Ireland. “The goal of the pianist is to bring life to the piano. And the piano has been waiting all its life long for someone to come and bring it life, bring it light. Let it sing, even for a few moments." Lubomyr Melnyk is a composer and pianist of Ukrainian origin. He plays what he calls continuous music, a style whose rigorous technique shares commonality with martial arts. He's regarded as the world's fastest piano player, capable of playing 19 and a half notes per second. It's a skill that's enabled him to create singular musical landscapes, where sound appears to come in swathes rather than individual notes. He's been at it for more than sixty years and despite his superlative skill and beautiful compositions, he hasn't gotten much attention until very recently. He and I chatted about the three communities that have most informed his approach to music -- the classical music world, the dance world, and the hippie movement — and the happiness that stems from people finally starting to appreciate his astonishing art. Our voyage into continuous music comes to a close as we dig into Lubomyr Melnyk’s eighteenth (!) album Corollaries. For the unfamiliar, Melnyk categorises his style as being something almost beyond classical music, yet this release sees him team up with neoclassical composers Nils Frahm and Peter Broderick. This album seemed to give Melnyk a new lease of life; upon getting together with Frahm and Broderick he stated “Where were you in my thirties?”, a statement that stands in stark contrast to his general aversion to playing with other musicians in the years before. There’s a lot to be said about Melnyk’s playing, and I think we cover most of that in the episode. Once again, potato quality audio from Mark but hey, it isn’t terrible. There’s no doubt in our mind that Melnyk is unsung. The question is, do you agree? Vote below.

OH GOOD LORD IT’S ANOTHER TWO PARTER. Maybe we should get better at planning these things… Anyway. Chris has been chomping at the bit to do this Lubomyr Melnyk album for a while. In fact, some may even remember that he brought it up during our Pandemic Mixtape. Well, the time has come to finally tackle this post-classical/minimalist work and in doing so we absolutely had to cover his…interesting thoughts on musical philosophy. Which cascades into his questionable thoughts on the actual science of how sound works. Which takes us down a big old rabbit hole, as I’m sure you can imagine. All of this to say that it takes us a while to get to the album as a result. Also, the dude’s done like 20+ albums (although we don’t cover all of them) so that’s another whole thing we had to deal with. We also talk about continuous music (the genre he reckons he’s in…of which he is the only practitioner), his incredible piano playing speed and a bunch more things. We’ll chat about Corollaries next week. Also, apologies for the bad sound on Mark’s part this week.. Technical error as resulted in proper potato quality sound.

Peter Broderick is a prolific, genre-defying American musician, composer, and producer. He is known internationally for a diverse range of solo projects, collaborations, and compositions for cinema and dance. A gifted multi-instrumentalist who is equally versed in a wide range of styles, Broderick's extensive discography -- on a range of labels including Bella Union, Erased Tapes, Staalplaat, and Beacon Sound -- is appended by a massive list of credits that reads like a who's who of 21st century independent, classical, and experimental music.Growing up in a musical household in Portland, Oregon, Broderick learned to play several instruments. After graduating high school, he became a session musician, contributing violin, banjo, musical saw, mandolin, and other instruments to recordings by M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, Dolorean, and Norfolk & Western, among others. His self-released debut EP, 4 Track Songs, appeared in 2006. Via his MySpace page, he befriended Danish band Efterklang, and in mid-2007 he moved to Copenhagen to work with the group. That same year, Docile, his first album of solo piano pieces, was issued by Kning Disk. Float (Erased Tapes) and Hope (Bella Union) followed in 2008.
