Summary: We'll make it quick this week, folks! Or not, since Holly and Devin can't resist waxing poetic about how awesome novellas are. Shorter than a novel, longer than a short story, these ~160 page books really pack a punch. Growing in popularity in Holly's wheelhouse lately but still more rare in Devin's, this corner of published works is sometimes overlooked but always worth digging into more deeply, especially if you enjoy watching authors use economy of words to create a world you're sucked into.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (5:15): Holly discussed We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, a gothic horror novella following Merricat Blackwood, an 18 year old girl who lives on her family's estate with her older sister Constance and their ailing uncle Julian. The Blackwood family used to be larger but was decimated by arsenic poisoning at a family dinner six years before the novel begins, for which Constance was accused and acquitted. Their days pass in happy isolation until cousin Charles appears, seeking to claim the Blackwood fortune. His presence threatens their secluded way of life, and Merricat feels she must act swiftly to keep them all safe from his designs. Holly's key takeaways were: The novel explores themes of societal cruelty, mob mentality, and the persecution of those who are different. Through Merricat and Constance, the reader explores human nature and society's treatment of outsiders. The story can be read as a subversive take on women's roles, with Constance as the domestic caretaker and Merricat as a defiant, untamed force. Jackson creates a chilling atmosphere of dread and paranoia, influencing modern gothic fiction and psychological thrillers we see today. She explores the lines between social ostracization and self-imposed exile, how the Blackwoods' past defines their present and how Constance and Merricat cope differently with their trauma.  As a novella, Holly was impacted the most by Jackson's effective writing in so few pages. She felt joy at every single sentence, every weird quirk of the characters, the tone that was partly childlike and partly old fashioned, every detail about their house and their shopping and the claustrophobia of it all. The Heart (16:56): Devin discussed Loathe to Love You by Ali Hazelwood, a collection of three novellas that can stand alone but also work in harmony as a collection. Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are three engineers with different specialities, living in different places, united by friendship and their hatred for men thrust into their lives. Whether you're following Mara as she fights for space living with Liam, Sadie as she grapples with rejection while trapped in an elevator with Erik, or Hannah as she struggles for survival (and control of herself) with Ian in the arctic, these novellas are delightfully feminist and steamy. Devin's key takeaways were: As with many of Hazelwood's works, these novellas are grounded first and foremost in feminism and women in STEM; the three protagonists are very different but united in their work in the sciences and the challenges they face as women in a male-dominated field. As a novella, these stories stay tight and build romantic tension by putting the protagonists in closed environments; roommates, trapped in an elevator, in a tiny research facility in frigid conditions. By limiting the scope of locations and characters, Hazelwood could more efficiently create the perfect cocktail of emotion, tension, and chemistry that makes for great Enemies to Lovers reading. A standout component of the novella collection was the men; each in their own way was misunderstood by the female protagonists and for good reason. I've been watching a lot of the late night shows this week from America on YouTube. Fallon, Kimmel and Colbert, all of them have used the same joke - “oh my god... it's only been a week” And then the audience cheers or laughs or boos or cries, or more likely all of that, all at once because what a week it's been. The second golden era of Trump kicked off and he started doing things, brilliant things. Colombia won't take deportees, so hit them with killer tariffs and economic sanctions that take hold in a week. Within 12 hours Colombia folded. Crisis over, back to work, business as usual. That was just one day. A short crisis is so much better than a long festering one where nothing happens. Or take the ceasefire in Gaza. Trump said call a ceasefire, rebuild Gaza. Well you know that's what everyone wants. Jewish, Arab and American construction tycoons - because there's peace and money there. Gaza may be rebuilt as Israeli condos or Palestinian homes with or without Arab money. But who cares, there's a ceasefire. Now this may have long term consequences, but again who cares! There's a ceasefire. Thank God something finally happened. It's been a week of rapid and effective decisions and that's what you can do with executive power and every level of government behind you. I talked earlier about how MMP causes indecisive leadership in New Zealand. Questions about why Ezekiel 36:31–32 would say, contrary to Ezekiel 39:25–26, that putting God's Spirit into people will cause them to loathe themselves and be ashamed and whether or not it's biblical to say that the closer you are to God, the more sinful you feel.   Why would Ezekiel 36:31–32 say that after God puts his Spirit in his people, they will loathe themselves and be ashamed for their sins when his Spirit is supposed to give us hope and joy in Christ as children of God, and doesn't this contradict 39:25–26? Is it biblical to say that the closer you are to God, the more sinful you feel?

The Liverpool foursome morph from blissful dream state to Nightmare on Elm Street and everything in between. Their sound can be familiar like an old friend but thrilling like a first date. From the ashes of Our Imbalance's pure metalcore madness—featuring guitarist/vocalist Erik Bickerstaffe, vocalist Kadeem France, and drummer Sean Radcliffe before recruiting guitarist Connor Sweeney and bassist Shayne Smith—rose the reformation that became the experimental Loathe in 2014. (Current bassist Feisal El-Khazragi replaced Smith in 2018 and Sweeney left the band in 2021.) Nu-metal bounce, djent precision, shoegaze shimmer, post-hardcore chaos, synth segues, barbwire breakdowns, moody melodies, and singalong choruses aren't groundbreaking elements. But how they make them gel and grate against each other is what makes Loathe special. In a matter of minutes, they can make you scream, cry, and then dance before inciting you to do all three at once. The difference is in the disparate.Their creative applications of the past, present, and future keep them ahead of the audience providing a deep musical menu. If you don't like the first Loathe song you hear, there's a chance the next one will be your favorite. “The four of us have very differing influences, but when we work together, we create something very unique,” contends Bickerstaffe.Even Bickerstaffe's guitar choices are at odds. He wants the heaviest sound possible but avoids using 7- or 8-string guitars because of their brash tones and jagged aesthetics. He prefers to swing the sledgehammer in a classic costume of a Gretsch Jet (and formerly a Jazzmaster).“We wanted a British-rock sound that pushes further into modern extreme-metal influence when we were writing. I don't like anything too metallic or sharp sounding. For the band we are and what we're trying to do musically, it's not the right thing,” states Bickerstaffe.It's been over four years since their heralded I Let It In and It Took Everything, and the fans are growing impatient. The band is aware of the wait and are concerned with impressing themselves rather than capitalizing on the attention. “There's music in the world the four of us as individuals miss hearing, and we want to be the people that create that in our own style. Hopefully, people who agree with us are along for the ride, and if not, that's absolutely cool. We've been through a lot, and we're working really hard together to make sure the music that we put out is exactly what we want to put out. KEY TAKEAWAYS My biggest mistake was abdicating responsibility when I should have delegated responsibility. Towards the later stage of one of my companies I was going through a divorce. I thought that everything was good & didn't see myself as integral in the company anymore, so I turned everything over to my business development lead & the team while I checked out to deal with my personal problems. About 18 months later I didn't know what decisions had been made & what direction the company had gone. I couldn't blame them, I was accountable. I should have taken the time to delegate and clarify all the things that needed to be done and check in on people. If I come across an owner or CEO that's frustrated or overwhelmed, I have them create 3 columns: Love, Loathe, Indifferent. I get them to write down everything about their business into these columns and get them to focus on the ‘indifferent column to figure out how committed they are to do these things to help the organisation and get them to get help for the things they aren't committed to so they get done. Startups tend to want to look for unicorns, the person who is an expert in a particular skillset, hiring for talent rather than fit – the ability to trust or even have conflict with each other. All these talented individuals butt heads, don't see eye-to-eye, aren't committed to the same outcomes. For me it's a bout the team, getting the right people in the right seats and getting things right. This is the first things companies should do. I am equally as excited about AI as I am terrified of it. It's going to impact every single job in the next few years. To what degree, I don't really know, but if we can get to a point of AGI (artificial general intelligence) that will be game-changing because it will be very human-like. It's tool that we need to incorporate, bring into our skillset and adapt to it but right now we can't quite see where it's going to go, in terms of strategy & how it's going to impact our companies.
