His latest release, The Next Step Band (Live at Smalls, 1996), revisits the music from his acclaimed 2001 album The Next Step and features longtime collaborators Mark Turner, Ben Street, and Jeff Ballard. In addition to his album, Rosenwinkel has published Kurt Rosenwinkel's Ultimate Book of Compositions, which includes scores, tabs, and commentary on his extensive work. He founded his label, Heartcore, in 2016 to release Caipi and take control of his career, likening the label's creation to playing a "record company" video game. This time on Wong Notes, guitar legend Kurt Rosenwinkel joins Cory Wong to go deep on all things jazz. The genre has always been a haven for free-thinkers and adventurers, so it's a little surprising when Rosenwinkel reveals that he's incorporated a Fractal FM9 into his live rig—though it's still working in tandem with a good ol' Fender tube amp.Rosenwinkel divulges the details on his “softer, darker” attack, which combined with his approach to tone—including a fair bit of top-end roll-off—constitutes a big piece of his signature sound. Rosenwinkel's forthcoming live record, The Next Step Band (Live at Smalls 1996), captures this sound in the place that formed it: New York City. Rosenwinkel takes Wong back to the halcyon days of the city's kinetic 1990s “hardcore” bebop and free-jazz scene, where Mitch Borden's legendary Smalls Jazz Club was an artistic hotbed (and crash pad) for players of all stripes.Nowadays, more and more artists are forming their connections online rather in a jazz club. While many landscape photo locations have an obvious subject, some of the most rewarding images to create can be found in places with very little obvious subject matter. These places generally steer away many photographers, since it takes patience and a great eye to find compositions in these places. In this episode, Gary Randall shares some of his favorite tips for creating compelling images in hard to shoot locations, such as the forest. Gary has years of experience and lots of great advice to help you take your compositions to the next level.Links from this episode:Gary's WebsiteGary's InstagramGary's FacebookGary's FlickrDestination Earth Photo ToursIf you're serious about becoming better at photography, the fastest way to do so is by joining me for an in-person workshop. The Sevillian composer Manuel Font de Anta is perhaps best known for authoring some of the most emblematic processional marches of Holy Week, such as "Amarguras" or "Soleá dame la mano." What is not so well known is that Font de Anta also composed some flamenco works for piano. In this episode, we review some of these works, which are entirely unknown, and listen to some of them.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/forgottensoundsflamenco/message

Is creating compositions a challenge for you? I can totally see why. First off, for the simple reason that composition is art. It is subjective and everyone's style is different. So it really leaves a lot of grey area on whether a certain technique works or not.Secondly, because composition is an art, it is tough to learn it technically. Yes, we can understand guides and placement and general rules around composition but really, we all know that creating composition is like composing music. Thirdly, compositions are tough because there are so many choices. Any food can be photographed in infinite no. of ways. And because the choices are so vast, it often becomes a time struggle for us. In addition to the time we spend on creating the composition, theres so much decision making that has to be done to choose a composition style for our subject, ending up in taking up more time. What if there was a way to make that decision faster? What if you could look at a food subject and decide what composition style would suit it best? What if you could save all that time upfront? In this week's episode, we discuss how to know when to create large compositions. We discuss the 3 categories of food that are worth spending the time to create elaborate compositions, how to use that to your advantage in client projects and how to work smartly to create simpler yet powerful compositions. Creating large and elaborate compositions can be really time taking. Oftentimes we spend so much creating a composition for a subject and it doesn't deliver our vision or look the best it could. We are either disappointed or think that we don't have the skills to envision the result upfront or we start over and recreate. None of these situations are preferable.Learn a simple way of identifying which food works best for larger compositions can help save time, develop the skill of envisioning the result upfront and also position us as experts in front of clients. Whether composition-creation is a struggle or not, here's a simple way to work smarter with it.
