Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/3B58-fA2b-4"Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings." — KandinskyHow do we ‘see' music, or ‘hear' images? From Newton's colour scales assigning tones to the rainbow, artists and composers have long explored the deep connections between sound and vision.Kandinsky's Compositions and Improvisations; Klee's polyphonic paintings, and Scriabin's synaesthetic craft all reveal the scintillating interplay of visual and sonic art. This lecture traces their co-evolution and shared language, from spectral composers to technological translations of light into rhythm and melody, uncovering the hidden spectrum where music and colour intertwine. This lecture was recorded by Milton Mermikides on the 14th of January 2026 at LSO St Luke's, LondonMilton Mermikides is a composer, guitarist, technologist, academic and educator in a wide range of musical styles and has collaborated with artists and scientists as diverse as Evelyn Glennie, Tim Minchin, Pat Martino, Peter Zinovieff, John Williams and Brian Eno. Son of a CERN nuclear physicist, he was raised with an enthusiasm for both the arts and sciences, an eclecticism which has been maintained throughout his teaching, research and creative career. He is a graduate of the London School of Economics (BSc), Berklee College of Music (BMus) and the University of Surrey (PhD). He has lectured, exhibited and given keynote presentations at organisations like the Royal Academy of Music, TEDx, Royal Musical Association, British Library, Smithsonian Institute and The Science Museum and his work has been featured extensively in the press. His music, research and graphic art are published and featured by Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Deutsche Grammophon, Sony and more, and he has won awards, scholarships and commendations for writing, teaching, research and his charity work. Milton is Professor of Music at the University of Surrey, Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music, Deputy Director of the International Guitar Research Centre, an Ableton Certified Trainer, and lives in London with his wife, the guitarist Bridget Mermikides and their daughter Chloe. In his second appearance on Anthony Plog on Music, celebrated biographer and composer Jan Swafford returns for an expansive two-part conversation that dives deep into the very soul of classical music. In his previous interview from 2021, Jan discussed his monumental biographies of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Ives. But his intellectual and creative output extends far beyond those volumes, and this new set of interviews explores more of his wide-ranging contributions to the world of music. In Part 1, the focus turns to Jan's book Language of the Spirit: An Introduction to Classical Music, a refreshingly vivid and often personal guide to the history of Western music. The discussion begins with a few select quotes that set the tone for Swafford's engaging style—an approach that never shies away from humor, insight, or imagination. Along the way, Tony and Jan take an unexpected detour into a blog post imagining a conversation between Mozart and Picasso's Guernica. As the conversation returns to the content of Language of the Spirit, the two explore key aspects of the Baroque period, including figured bass and the challenges of intonation. The episode concludes with a discussion of three of Jan's own compositions—They That Mourn, Late August, First Snow, and River—offering a glimpse into his creative voice as a composer.Part 2 picks up right where they left off, continuing the discussion of the Baroque with special attention to the genius of Bach and the dramatic flair of Händel. This naturally leads into a thoughtful debate on performance practice, particularly the tension between historically informed performances (HIP) and modern approaches. Jan brings his signature candor and wit to the conversation, questioning what authenticity really means and whether the HIP movement sometimes overreaches. The episode closes on a memorable note, as Jan describes the extraordinary experience of holding the original manuscripts of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and Brahms's German Requiem in his hands. And in true Swafford fashion, he promises to return again—next time, to tackle the Classical era through to the present day.DoricoProfessional music notation and composition software from Steinberg.

Kurt Rosenwinkel, a Philadelphia-born jazz guitarist, is renowned for blending genres and using guitar effects innovatively in jazz. His latest release, The Next Step Band (Live at Smalls, 1996), revisits the music from his acclaimed 2001 album The Next Step and features longtime collaborators Mark Turner, Ben Street, and Jeff Ballard. In addition to his album, Rosenwinkel has published Kurt Rosenwinkel's Ultimate Book of Compositions, which includes scores, tabs, and commentary on his extensive work. He founded his label, Heartcore, in 2016 to release Caipi and take control of his career, likening the label's creation to playing a "record company" video game. This time on Wong Notes, guitar legend Kurt Rosenwinkel joins Cory Wong to go deep on all things jazz. The genre has always been a haven for free-thinkers and adventurers, so it's a little surprising when Rosenwinkel reveals that he's incorporated a Fractal FM9 into his live rig—though it's still working in tandem with a good ol' Fender tube amp.Rosenwinkel divulges the details on his “softer, darker” attack, which combined with his approach to tone—including a fair bit of top-end roll-off—constitutes a big piece of his signature sound. Rosenwinkel's forthcoming live record, The Next Step Band (Live at Smalls 1996), captures this sound in the place that formed it: New York City. Rosenwinkel takes Wong back to the halcyon days of the city's kinetic 1990s “hardcore” bebop and free-jazz scene, where Mitch Borden's legendary Smalls Jazz Club was an artistic hotbed (and crash pad) for players of all stripes.Nowadays, more and more artists are forming their connections online rather in a jazz club. But can TikTok and Instagram replace an all-night jazz joint for up-and-coming players?Tune in, and be sure to check out Kurt's career-spanning new Ultimate Book of Compositions.Listen to the full episode here: https://bit.ly/WongNotesGet 30% off your first year of DistroKid by going here: http://distrokid.com/vip/corywongVisit Kurt Rosenwinkel: https://kurtrosenwinkel.com/Hit us up: wongnotes@premierguitar.comVisit Cory: https://www.corywongmusic.comVisit Premier Guitar: http://premierguitar.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/wongnotespodProduced by Jason Shadrick and Cory WongAdditional Editing by Shawn PersingerPresented by DistroKid
