Lord Echo - "Whoa! There's No Limit (feat. Mara TK)(Alternate version)" from the 2023 album Rarities 2010-2020: Japanese Tour Singles on Soundway Records. New Zealand-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Lord Echo (aka Mike Fabs) digs into the vault for a new compilation from London's Soundway Records, titled Rarities 2010 - 2020: Japanese Tour Singles. The title really does say it all: the eight-track LP shares digital versions of what were vinyl-only singles released only in Japan, at the time. (There's also a vinyl version available with an embossed Japanese printed sleeve and obi strip.) Today's Song of the Day revisits a 2017 track from his third album, Harmonies, featuring guest vocals from Maori-Scottish artist Mara TK. It's time for another RNZ Music Live Session! This time we're joined by Wellington singer and songwriter, Mara TK (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Tainui), who you may know from his time as frontman of Electric Wire Hustle.

Scottish-Māori artist Mara TK has lent his velvety vocals to neo-soul trio Electric Wire Hustle for years, and with his deeply personal debut solo album, Bad Medication, he takes center stage. The album brings him back to his home of Aotearoa (or "long white cloud," the Māori name for New Zealand). He says in a press release, “writing this album has been a form of therapy over the last few years trying to figure out what kind of music I wanted to make next.” He adds, "I was offered what was basically a whole studio worth of gear from a friend who was moving overseas. I took a gamble and bought that gear and have spent the last five years learning how to use this shit. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Super happy to be able to get this mix out in time for travel season. Got all sorts of 110-125 bpm house/electronica inflected vibes today. Light to heavy, and everything in between. Got the loungy bossa / Thievery sound, the almost late 80s early 90s pop vocal sound, the tech house sound al a Dirty Bird and others with some solid vocal repetition, some current pop vocal sounds, the jazzy disco house vibe, and even a Jon Hopkins sounding Odesza remix. The silkily-voiced Garzon-Montano toured with Lenny Kravitz last year, and Crawl is only one of a slew of songs I've been hitting rewind to from his debut album. Noname has dropped one of the most beautifully subtle soul albums of 2016, but it's only now I've found the the time for a proper listen. Manc hip hop from longtime pal Dubbul O hits hard and pays tribute to Gang Starr with its title. Paul White's beat on Lion's Den is dreamy. Synths abound from Aim, Survive, Mogwai and Onyeabor. Lord Echo provides this episode's title and Jungle Fire are back with their second album, Jambu. Piano soul from Sampha and Joseph Scaturro, crazy funk from Thundercat and pure jump-up South American rhythm from Quantic and Nidia. The theme from one of my favourite films, bass from the Cosmic Bridge stable with a Transformers reference and one from the Havana meets Kingston project. Lynn Freeman is joined by Musical Siblings Mara TK and Billy TK Jnr. Mara is a member of Electric Wire Hustle, Fly My Pretties, and Data Hui, composed music for the play Hikoi, and has collaborated with many musicians including a joint album with Hollie Smith. Billy is a renowned Blues guitarist who as well as pursuing his own solo career does excellent work as a sideman for other acts, he's also been a director of various jazz & blues festivals in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

A very strange hour tonight even by this show's standard. I'm rather inarticulate due to the massive MTH party on Friday. But great music: Pye Corner Audio, Man Made Hill, Mara TK , Time Attendant, music form schools, and some imaginary TV themes. Functional.
