Returning guest and one of our favourite documentarians, Marc Fennell sat down to unpack his new project that explores the early days of the internet and where it all went wrong, through a deep dive into a previously unexplored world of tech hippies, eccentric web subcultures and simmering paranoia, uncovering how this tongue-in-cheek artistic experiment backfired on its creator and went on to influence much of what's wrong with the internet today. Marc was quite candid about his approach to documentary making and storytelling, and to my delight, shared just how he really felt about being labelled as the "cheerful Aussie version of Louis Theroux" - the same day he was sitting down to interview Louis himself. Ever wondered what really happens inside the stadiums of Hillsong? Or what exactly it is that draws people into these large-scale production religious events, that have even had the likes of Justin Bieber front and centre? And what encourages church members to dedicate their entire lives to the church, at what can sometimes be huge financial and personal costs? Well, you're about to find out. In this episode, I sat down with renowned journalist Marc Fennell, to unpack his experience making the brilliant new documentary, The Kingdom. Marc grew up in the Pentecostal church and brings a unique perspective to the complexities of faith and the juggernaut that is these larger than life, megachurch operations. Marc delves into how allegations of bullying, sexual assault and financial mismanagement have eroded Hillsong's once mighty empire and examines the answer to the question, who is going to inherit the remainder of the Kingdom? This was an eye-opening conversation about faith, belief, corruption and came with a lot of deep thinking and reflection from Marc's own personal experience as a former church member. You can catch this fascinating doco on SBS On Demand and you can find Marc on socials at @marcfennell. Episode 81: Marc Fennell is the force behind the new SBS documentary, "The Kingdom". It is a doco that explores the rise and fall of Hillsong Church in Australia (and around the globe), but that also asks harder and more nuanced questions of the wider pentecostal megachurch systems and structures that have grown so rapidly in recent decades. This form of Christianity clearly appeals so deeply to so many, and yet can also grow on the back of coercion and abuse of power that often leads to burn out, spiritual trauma, and to many thousands of unsaid, unheard stories of pain, dislocation and harm. In this conversation we talk with Marc about his approach and hopes for the doco, about his own story of growing up in these kinds of churches, the good, the bad, the ugly... and the kinds of hard questions that the new emerging churches should be asking of themselves (and that participants should be asking) if there is going to be a healthier future ahead. There's a scene from the current series of The Crown that many people found jarring. When Mohamed Al-Fayed buys the former French residence of the Duke of Windsor, Edward the Third, he invites the royals to visit. Instead, they send an entourage who clear it out of some of the more important royal objects, including the desk at which the then King Edward signed his abdication papers. But while that story isn't quite true, many wondered at the audacity of the royal family claiming artefacts from their own history when they hold on to so many of those they've collected from the colonies over hundreds of years, objects that some want returned. Today we check in with Marc Fennell, the host of Stuff the British Stole, to find out out why some things still remain in the grips of the colonial power. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? Nor are they strangers to podcasts in general, with both of them managing to segue from podcasts to our screens with Marc transforming his award winning Stuff the British Stole into a riveting six part tv series, hitting screens on the first of November. And Michael showed his competitive spirit against his fellow Triple J host, Lewis Hobba, by participating in Australia's Best Competition Competition which was on ABC TV Plus on Thursday, but which you can watch right now on iview.https://iview.abc.net.au/show/australia-s-best-competition-competitionhttps://iview.abc.net.au/show/stuff-the-british-stole?utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_sharedSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-saturday-quiz. Today on the podcast I have 'Marc Fennell' who is an 'Australian' film critic, technology journalist, radio personality, author and television presenter. His new series 'Stuff the British Stole' on the 'ABC' which launches on November 1st is a fantastic dive into historical artifices that have stories that will surprise and provoke conversation amongst viewers. Marc has a great turn of phrase and he knows how to look for the hidden story. For years I have loved him as a film critic and I love his curiosity in every program he puts his name too. I will ask him about the shows origins, what he thinks of the 'British' after filming this series, if he thinks we should form a republic and if he is a royalist. Liz Recommends - Stuff the British Stole https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/stuff-the-british-stole/Throughout its reign, the British Empire stole a lot of stuff. Today those objects are housed in genteel institutions across the UK and the world. They usually come with polite plaques. This is a series about the not-so-polite history behind those objects. Each episode, award-winning journalist, author and genetic-potluck, Marc Fennell, picks one artefact and takes you on the wild, evocative, sometimes funny, often tragic adventure of how it got to where it is today. These objects will ultimately help us see the Commonwealth — and ourselves — today, in a different light.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/stuff-the-british-stole/id1540218461Nick Recommends - The Trojan Horse AffairA strange letter appears on a city councillor's desk in Birmingham, England, laying out an elaborate plot by Islamic extremists to infiltrate the city's schools. The plot has a code name: Operation Trojan Horse. The story soon explodes in the news and kicks off a national panic. By the time it all dies down, the government has launched multiple investigations, beefed up the country's counterterrorism policy, revamped schools and banned people from education for the rest of their lives. To Hamza Syed, who is watching the scandal unfold in his city, the whole thing seemed … off. Because through all the official inquiries and heated speeches in Parliament, no one has ever bothered to answer a basic question: Who wrote the letter? And why? The night before Hamza is to start journalism school, he has a chance meeting in Birmingham with the reporter Brian Reed, the host of the hit podcast S-Town. Together they team up to investigate: Who wrote the Trojan Horse letter? They quickly discover that it's a question people in power do not want them asking.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-trojan-horse-affair/id1606918193Zane Recommends - You Are Good#movies #duo #chattyhttps://blubrry.com/whyaredadsSarah Marshall and Alex Steed have always struggled to succinctly express just what their podcast is about. Until recently it was called Why Are Dads? and professed to explore films via the lens of their father figures. They stuck to this conceit for a little while — albeit with frequent, entertaining digressions — but soon a drift started to occur. The show started in August of 2020, and by the winter it wasn't uncommon that episodes would spend far more time on other areas than they did on fathers. By the spring, the digressions had completely overwhelmed the dads. Acknowledging that their focus had changed, this May the pair announced that they were changing the name to You Are Good (a reference to a touching scene of affirmation in Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein that they'd discussed on an earlier episode).https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-are-good/id1527948382 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
