The man behind the horrific crime was a 29-year-old Sunday school teacher, deacon, youth group worker, and volunteer groundskeeper at the church. He was also a manager at a local self-service gas station and minimart. I bludgeoned her,” he told Novato detectives in a taped confession, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. The admission stunned even veteran officers. According to detectives, the suspect revealed disturbing details about the April 13 killing that had not been made public, proof that his confession was genuine. Evidence recovered at the church reading room included a bloodstain unsuccessfully concealed with coffee, and the girl's bomber jacket, discarded in a nearby trash bin. A police bloodhound had originally led officers to the church, but early focus on misleading witness descriptions delayed the discovery of the real killer. In the end, it was the murderer's leaving behind identifiable religious material in the garbage bag used to dispose of the body, that brought the case to light. Send us a Text Message.One of the saddest cases in recent memory. Sandra Birchmore joined the Stoughton, Mass police explorers program at 13-14. Sandra's family had been looking for a positive male role model, for thirteen year old Sandra. She had a difficult home life and the family thought they had found, that role model, with the leader of the explorers program. Sgt. William Devine had been tasked with making the program work for local kids. Reportedly, the explorers went off the rails quickly. Sandra developed an infatuation with first responders. Before long it appeared grooming type activities allegedly began. She'd be found dead in her apartment in 2021.Three police officials have been the recent focus of a variety of investigations, by the FBI, the Massachusetts Attorney General's office and the Mass state police. No charges have been filed to date, however a civil suit may bring new light to this case. Officer Matthew Farwell, his twin brother Officer William Farwell and Deputy Chief Robert Devine are accused of inappropriate sexual contact, including statutory rape of Sandra Birchmore.Sandra was admittedly raped, as she was too young to consent to sex, during an affair with a married cop, for whom she provided child care. She was apparently pregnant with Officer Matt Farwell's baby. He was the last person to see Sandra alive, before he went to deliver his baby with his wife, at a nearby hospital. His brother had also had an affair with Sandra, when she was young. Deputy Chief Devine is also credibly, accused of having a physical affair with Sandra. This story is completely rancid. Today on the show we're returning to the Alex Murdaugh saga, as I call it—this is actually not the first time on the show we've spoken about it and not even the first time in season 13 we've spoken about it. It is compelling to me for its savagery—I can't understand it, a man who could do this evil to his family and to so many others, as well. Today on the show we have Valerie Bauerlein, here to talk about her brilliant new book The Devil at His Elbow: Alex Murdaugh and the Fall of a Southern Dynasty, which comes out today, August 20. Alex was the Prince of Hampton County, South Carolina, as Valerie puts it, and he came from a long line of Murdaughs who believed “To live above the law, you must become the law.” So they did that. They all became lawyers—or solicitors, as they're known in Hampton County—and ran the town and the county. Not only do we learn more about Alex and his immediate family of Maggie, Buster, and Paul Murdaugh in this book, but also the deeper Murdaugh family history, filled with corruption and crime and callousness, quite frankly. Valerie is such a talented writer—she writes that, for Alex, “duplicity was his birthright,” and in this book we learn information I'd never heard or read before about his murder case for the deaths of Maggie and Paul and other crimes he committed, as well. As Valerie writes, “Three generations of Murdaughs had devoted a century to building a legal dynasty. Now, in a little more than ten years, Alex had burned the whole thing down.” This book details how he did just that. Valerie Bauerlein is on the show today, and she is fantastic. She is a national reporter for The Wall Street Journal who writes about small-town America and Southern politics, economics, and culture. She has covered the South her entire career, including 19 years at The Wall Street Journal and four years at The State in Columbia, South Carolina.
