Getting back into the flow of college wrestling season is always one of those things where you’re all fired up and excited and doing so many things, and then by April, you’re like totally spent. Only this year, April means the Olympic Trials! Yes, it’s the first week of November, it’s already snowed twice here in Minnesota and I might already be overdoing it here with Short Time Shots. But have no fear, it’s still pushing through the adversity that is week one of the college wrestling season. It’s too early to whine, I’m Jason Bryant. Dual Meets: With Tommy Baranowski and Kevin Claunch from Bloodround on the call, Division II Davenport went into Alma College’s gym and beat the Division III Scots 25-20. Rock On. Tommy offered his referee-endorsing apologist viewpoint, while Claunch was spending so much time looking at wrestler’s feet. Ok, he’s a shoe guy, Promo Code Blood20, right guys? The Danny Irwin era at West Liberty got off to a strong start as the Division II Hilltoppers won nine of 10 bouts to defeat the NAIA Golden Bears of West Virginia Tech 48-3. Fastest fall of the night came at 285 where Chase Logan of West Liberty picked up the win in 1:41. The Nick Soto era at St. Andrews wasn’t as welcoming as Division II Belmont Abbey cruised past NAIA St. Andrews 43-6 in a matchup between North Carolina schools. Quick fall for Belmont Abbey was Chandler Echols’ 41-second fall at 174 pounds. In a dual that actually involved two teams from the same Division, that being Division III, Ferrum beat Greensboro 30-6. Both of Ferrum’s returning All-Americans, Levi Englman and Mario Vasquez earned victories at 133 and 141 – respectively of course. Both schools are relatively new programs. A fall at heavyweight by Bridgewater State’s Ryan Higgins was doubly impactful on Wednesday. Not only did his fall tie the team score at the end of the 10 bouts, it was the tie-breaking criteria as it was the dual’s only one and it lifted Bridgewater State past New England College 20-19. I watched most of that dual. Nebraska Wesleyan spoiled the debut of the new Division III program at Fontbonne, that’s in St. Louis. The Prairie Wolves won 38-13 with All-American Eron Haynes, the newly minted American Rivers Conference Wrestler of the Week, picking up a fall in 86 seconds at 133 pounds. In the NAIA, Graceland fell behind the brand new program at Central Methodist 12-0 after three weights, but would win the six of the next seven weights and come away with a 27-15 win in Fayette, Missouri. In the NJCAA, Niagara Community College opened up with a 28-20 win over Mercyhurst North East. Niagara won three of the last four weights to pull out the win, highlighted by Adam Mateo’s fall at 184 pounds. Northwest Tech beat Otero 42-18. Notables on the Docket for November 7: Nebraska hosts Division II’s Chadron State and Nebraska-Kearney. NAIA Hastings is in there too. Life Pacific and San Francisco State head up to Vanguard, a newly reinstated program in Costa Mesa, California. Up the coast, Warner Pacific heads over to Corban to take on the brand new program there in Oregon. The Battle of Montana continues with Montana State-Northern facing off with Providence – yes, the one in Montana that used to be Great Falls. Iowa Conf- Excuse me, American Rivers Conference action gets underway with Buena Vista traveling East to take on the top-ranked team in Division III – the Loras Duhawks. Yes, there’s another team in Iowa starting the year ranked No. 1. In the Dakotas, Concordia-Moorhead will cross the Red River and face Mary, while St. John’s does the same, only a little further south, facing Division II Northern State – which is in SOUTH Dakota. In Wisconsin, UW-Oskhosh faces UW-Whitewater. Other than Nebraska, the only other Division I action is in New York as No. 7 Wisconsin takes on Buffalo. Note: This isn’t every dual on the schedule, but a good sample of the better ones or more notable things going on. FROM THE DWN: Biggest news of the day came in the brunch hours as Flowrestling and MissouriWrestle both reported three-time Missouri All-American Jaydin Eierman has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Eierman, a native of Columbia – the one in Missouri – is taking an Olympic redshirt this year. This is another major shakeup with a second big name hitting the portal in a week. While behind the Flo Pro paywall, Flo’s Mark Bader had a Skype call with Eierman, who said he’s got a top choice, but didn’t say it on the video. The Daily Herald in Utah reports that 2018 Final X runner-up Jason Chamberlain is making the switch from freestyle to Greco-Roman to challenge for a spot on the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team. Chamberlain placed five times in Fargo at the age-group levels, twice in Greco, with is best finish in that style coming in 2007 when he was the runner-up at 135 pounds. Following up on that news, the kids at the Home Mat Advantage Podcast have Jason Chamberlain on the show to talk about it! Over the weekend, Pat Pecora, the head coach at Pitt-Johnstown, picked up career victory No. 600 in the Mountain Cats win over LIU. The Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown breaks down Pecora’s 44 years at the helm. He’s 16 wins behind Oregon State’s Dale Thomas, who has the all-division record with 616 dual meet victories. com with another strong athlete feature, this time from veteran media professional Darren Miller. This one’s on Kaleb Young, the Pennsylvania native and returning All-American. Columbia also offers up a solid inhouse feature with volunteer assistant Shelton Mack as he breaks down his trip to Russia in Taking Down Cultural Boundaries. Lehigh’s Cory Cooperman and Ed Hamer, American’s Josh Glenn, and Penn State’s Jack Light were announced as the induction class of the 2020 EIWA Hall of Fame. Trackwrestling’s Andy Hamilton keeps an eye on the market – the wrestling market – with Stock Watch, a new feature that identifies who’s up and who’s down in the Division I rankings this week. The Great Falls Tribune features Providence interim wrestling coach Steve Komac, a local high school coach thrust into a post coaching one of the NAIA’s top teams. The Predicament showcases the Galanakis-Sundell showdown on Inside the Rivalry, Chapter 7, Part 4. Gary Abbott of USA Wrestling writes about Transition Wrestling as part of #WomensWednesday. Gary, who will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame next Spring, has long served on committees and headed up special projects involving women’s wrestling. He talks to the site’s founder, Gabrielle Lord-Klein about Transition Wrestling on TheMat.com. On The Network If you missed Penn State coach Cael Sanderson’s media day on Tuesday, you can listen to the entire press conference on Short Time, with proper attribution and thanks to Penn State Athletics, which provided the content to the media. I put it in the feed. It’s also got timestamps to each question asked during the 30-minute sit down in State College – err, University Park. I've got a big week setup for the underground house lovers. So much so, I went ahead and knocked out all four mixes on Sunday. I've been somewhat busy and haven't had a chance to preview everything before I sent it up, so don't expect perfection. Based on what I've heard so far, it's pretty damn close. In fact, not bad for whipping up these sets in just under two hours. Actually, it takes longer to go through everything and decide what to keep and then have to remaster any song that's not up to par with the rest. I did that on Saturday. Overall, I'd have to say I'm very pleased. Once again I've put together some of the best in progressive, house, tech, electro and minimal to create a journey through the underground. Granted, there are definitely a handful of tunes on the commercial tip, but that just helps shape the overall tone of these four sets. If you haven't heard the superstar collaboration between Steve Angello, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Laidback Luke with vocals by Deborah Cox yet, then you're in for a big treat. Not unlike the brand spanking new David Guetta & Kelly Rowland tune, it hooks you and never lets go. Don't worry, that tune is coming up in a later mix. Obviously, we also have the fabulous Donna Summer with Jay Styles electro take on her version of “La Vie En Rose” and if anyone ever doubted her vocal abilities, I think this puts it to rest. I also think everyone should check out the fabulous “Can't Sleep” by Sweden's Adrian Lux. This might very well be the first ever all out gay video I've ever seen for a song. If you're queasy about two men hugging and kissing, then that may not be for you. Instead, close your eyes and imagine and man and a woman. Frankly, the song can pertain to just about any relationship. One last song I wanted to mention was Sharam's massive “Get Wild” with fantastic vocals provided by American Idol's ‘fallen angel' Mario Vasquez. I guess things haven't quite panned out as well as he hoped after leaving the show mid-stream. Nevertheless, the guy's got talent and no doubt will find his way soon enough. This is a damn good start. I don't have a lot of time to go on, but rest assured, for those of you that live for the System Editions, it will not disappoint. Enjoy!
