In The Promise of Sunrise: Finding Solace in a Broken World (Green Writers Press, 2025), a former Bronx Zoo zoologist and award-winning nature writer, Ted Levin, spent Covid rediscovering his valley and the joys of watching the season pass, day by day by day. The book is a chronicle of his rediscovery of the Thetford, Vermont hillside on which he lived and a recounting of the daily joys of observing home ground as Levin (like many of us) was forced by Covid to stay home for nearly two years. In the end, he sold his home and moved to Hurricane Hill in Hartford, Vermont, which ends the narrative, although he continues the same routine. Ted has been a Naturalist at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and then was a teaching zoologist at the Bronx Zoo in New York.  After studying Ornithology in graduate school, he served as a Naturalist at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich VT … and also was on the faculty of New England College in Henniker, NH. This book, is the latest in a long list of his books and publications going back to the 1980s. besides his previous natural history books, he has written and illustrated a book for preschoolers, contributed to a photo journal on the Everglades and has provided illustrations for two books on poetry. His many articles can be found in such publications as The New York Times, News Day, The Guardian, Audubon Magazine and even Sports illustrated. Of particular note, Ted won the prestigious John J. Burroughs Medal, a recognition that hi-lights the best of natural history writing. Beyond optometry school, there are questions about the future of the profession including how to continue attracting high-quality candidates and improving access to care. Is the answer more schools? Does increased industry involvement help? How much industry involvement is ok?This conversation will bring a lot of value to students, new grads, and veteran optometrists who are interested in thinking of new ways to improve optometry school and elevate the profession as a whole.Connect with Harbir:InstagramLinkedInYouTube

Raised in Winslow, Maine, Addiction Medicine specialist Dr. Nick Gallagher is the latest in a long line of family members to provide care for his community. He began his employment with the local hospital when he was a teenager, scrubbing floors and emptying trash cans, as a member of the environmental services team. After working his way through the University of Maine at Augusta, Nick went on to the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine. During his emergency medicine training, Nick saw firsthand the devastating impact of substance use disorder (SUD). This prompted Nick to pursue a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, before returning to practice in his home state. Now a medical director for the same hospital system in which he “grew up”--and where his mother worked for four decades– Nick stresses the importance of a compassionate, comprehensive, community-oriented approach to SUD. Join our conversation with Dr. Nick Gallagher today on Radio Maine.

The first death happened before the academic year began. In July 2021, an undergraduate student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute was reported dead. The administration sent a notice out over email, with the familiar, thoroughly vetted phrasing and appended resources. Katherine Foo, an assistant professor in the department of integrative and global studies, felt especially crushed by the news. She taught this student. He was Chinese, and she felt connected to the particular set of pressures he faced. She read through old, anonymous course evaluations, looking for any sign she might have missed. But she was unsure where to put her personal feelings about a loss suffered in this professional context. The week before the academic year began, a second student died. A rising senior in the computer-science department who loved horticulture took his own life. This brought an intimation of disaster. One student suicide is a tragedy; two might be the beginning of a cluster. Some faculty members began to feel a tinge of dread when they stepped onto campus.Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts is a tidy New England college campus with the high-saturation landscaping typical of well-funded institutions. The hedges are beautifully trimmed, the pathways are swept clean. Red-brick buildings from the 19th century fraternize with high glass facades and renovated interiors. But over a six-month period, the school was turned upside down by a spate of suicides.

After graduating with honors from Providence College, she enrolled in medical school at The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. It was there where she developed a strange illness with severe joint & back pain, headaches, weight gain, aches and chills all over, and severely low energy. When she sought help from the medical world, she was repeatedly told “nothing was wrong” or she was prescribed antidepressants until finally, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Instead of aligning with her doctors' perspectives and conclusions, Kim decided to investigate her own awareness about what was needed.. Being highly empathic and energy sensitive, she tuned into her own energy field and was able to see exactly what was limiting her health and keeping the disease in place. Through following her own inner wisdom, the illness resolved within days. He called himself Manitoban, the prairie farm-boy   who watched his dog run away for three days, the rain-man to lead you out, teach you how to mouth the O, the awe   in Holli. Yes, from here I can see the redwoods fall, the mountains decay, his sea-bed—   they say all the big hearts of the earth love where they fall, that his heart stopped   before he hit the beach. But we both know why his mouth was full of sand.     Christmas break for Doug and Arlene   The earth heaves, the ice cleaves. Erosion cuts the heart from every stone, while every night   I watch you drive your family past a starving glacier, turn from a truck laden with salt. You head off   the head on, take the bumper to the heart, leave your family straining your lungs' last   words from the floor of the minivan. I'm on the floor beneath my desk, straining   to plug in the phone that I will blame for years: why did I plug it in? Every night   I watch the driver's stoned eyes, petrified as your broken daughters in the back. Every night   I piece you all back together: brake, I say, turn over and over while the glacier leaves   its terminal moraine. I gather the stones, offer them to the moon, last witness   to your last turn. I turn to your wife, try to face her head on   with what the earth knows: core to crust, mouth to lung   the rupture comes, the rupture stays. Every Christmas   she wakes to the words brake, turn.     doom eager*       because one of us took a spike to the lung               a minivan to the chest                            hit the beach with his heart                                          to say nothing of the one                                                       whose only breath was broken water   because I believe               the hand, the wound, the moon                             is how I show you where I fell                                          through the hole I thought I was                                                       diving for pearls through the green                                                                     fuse of ice in my dream of you                             because I run naked                                         through the forest on a moonless night                                                        with a penlight in the hand that broke                                                        my mother's heart waning at the seed                                                                     of light the moon won't show me                                                                                    because its dark side calls all of us                             because I believe                                         I'll find your heart in the east                                                      your marrow in the moon                                                                     fever just before the sun rises                                                                                   I'll swim for it all day forgetting                                                                                                how the earth turns east south west                                                                                                                        circling all night forgetting                                                                                                                                                                                 there is no moon                                                                                                                                                                                 in the new moon                                                       because the only way out                                                                   is my hand on your chest                                                                                  I walk the shore all night                                                                                               dream back the back of the moon                                                                                                                                                               because the only cure                                                                                                                                                                                   for the wound                                                                                                                                                                                      is the wound     *after Ibsen, Graham, Moore: an Icelandic term for the isolation, restlessness, caughtness an artist experiences when sick with an idea

Did you know that each of your body's cells can be considered as intelligent sentient beings which you can actively collaborate with in promoting your body's health and well being ? Your cells are the microscopic architects that tirelessly build and maintain the monument that is your body. Each one is in constant communication with the rest, creating a beautiful symphony of life happening within you at all times.  According to Dr. Shawn Higgins, not only do your cells listen to the physical messages conveyed by hormones and nutrients, they also respond to energetic signals like sound. On this, episode, she shares how using specific musical intervals and combinations of tones you can “speak” with your body's cells and stimulate their innate healing abilities.  Biography Dr. Shawn Marie Higgins is an esteemed Osteopathic doctor who provides a holistic and innovative approach to healing. She is Board Certified in Neuro-musculo-skeletal Medicine and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine as well as a faculty member of the Osteopathic Cranial Academy. Dr. Higgins utilizes a variety of innovative techniques to support the self-healing mechanism of the body. Among the techniques she utilizes is her use of interval entrainment, which harnesses sound and vibration to “speak” directly to the cells in the body in their own language, thus stimulating the body's inherent healing abilities. Dr. Higgins is a graduate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Family Medicine Residency at Maine Dartmouth and currently has a private practice in the state of Maine.  Referenced Links :  https://www.osteopathicwell.com Visit Our Website :  www.resonanceRising.co

Today, we read and love “River House” by Diana Whitney. This poem is from Diana's forthcoming October 2023 collection, DARK BEDS (June Road Press).  Pre-order DARK BEDS here and anywhere you buy books: https://www.juneroadpress.com/bookstore Leam more about the Read to Me podcast and your host, Becky Karush: www.readtomeliteraryarts.com DARK BEDS, Diana's second collection, juxtaposes the conflicted emotions of motherhood and domesticity with the intoxicating promises of transgression. Fantasies fulfilled or imagined play out against the haunted backdrop of Vermont's woods and fields, a landscape both harsh and magical, conjuring longing and grief, dissolution and repair. Here we see how time is reflected in our bodies, our children, our choices, and the natural world. Dark Beds is an anthem for the “sandwich generation”—tired adults caught between the demands of growing children and aging parents, yearning to reclaim desire and a sense of self. Sensual, elegant, and deeply resonant, these poems lay bare the dark beds of a marriage, a garden, a human life: the intimate places where truths are buried, exposed, and sown again in hope of renewal. Diana Whitney writes across genres with a focus on feminism, motherhood, and sexuality. She is the editor of the bestselling anthology You Don't Have to Be Everything: Poems for Girls Becoming Themselves (2021), winner of the Claudia Lewis Award. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the Kenyon Review, Glamour, Crab Orchard Review, Puerto del Sol, and elsewhere. Her first book, Wanting It, won the Rubery Book Award in poetry. Diana has received numerous grants for her writing, including from the Sustainable Arts Foundation and the Vermont Arts Council, and is completing her MFA in poetry at New England College. A feminist activist in her hometown and beyond, she lives in Vermont with her family and works as an editor and writing coach. https://www.diana-whitney.com/ https://www.juneroadpress.com/

What's driving today's OD shortage? Are fewer optometry students passing their national board examinations or it just an issue of perception?  The answer may fall somewhere in between. In this episode of the Power Hour Podcast, Bethany has an in-depth discussion with Howard Purcell, OD, FAAO, President of the New England College of Optometry, about emerging trends in board exam passing rates and whether or not there's a reason for concern.
