In this six-episode “Sidequest” series, Irish Music Stories host Shannon Heaton shares music from her “Perfect Maze” album (pollinator-inspired compositions for flute, strings, piano, and voice). And in keeping with the IMS mission, she also incudes stories that helped her navigate the whole project. For installment #3, she highlights the Blue Dress motif, one of the recurring melodies on Perfect Maze. And she tells the story of weathering updates and tragedies of primates and men with a few different hues. _________________ For playlists, transcripts, links to videos, companion essays, and to contribute to this project, please head to ShannonHeatonMusic.com

This is the second of two episodes in which we look at films in which Denzel Washington is a lawman of some kind. We start with the 1995 neo-noir Devil in a Blue Dress, directed by Carl Franklin and co-starring the likes of Don Cheadle and Jennifer Beals. It's a period piece, set in post-WW2 California, and it deals with a man looking for a job but finding a mystery instead. Stay tuned--in Part 2 we look at 2003's Out of Time (not to be confused with 1987's No Way Out, which has a few plot similarities.)

In the second half of our episode, Denzel returns to the United States, and to New York City for Inside Man (2006), a Spike Lee joint. This is a crime thriller that has Denzel's character matching wits with a bank robber. There are lots of twists and turns and you're never sure who the titular "inside man" is until you're very close to the end—although there are lots of breadcrumbs to help you figure it out. If, that is, you know how to read them. COMING ATTRACTIONS: From the modern-day pieces of today's episode, we're going to jump to a period piece. Devil in a Blue Dress (1995) is set in post-war California. There's a mystery to be solved, and Denzel's the man to solve it. Finally, we wrap this package up with Out of Time (2003), which returns Denzel to the present day, but he's back in a tropical (well, subtropical, anyway) location to solve a murder before it can be pinned on him. Join us, won't you?
On this episode, we dig into the chilling story of a young boy whose family unwittingly inherited a sinister presence in their Jacksonville condo. What began with the discovery of a forgotten Ouija board spiraled into years of inexplicable encounters, spectral apparitions, and a deepening obsession with the supernatural. As the years passed, the hauntings followed, pushing the boundaries of belief and fear. Through vivid recountings of terrifying apparitions, unsettling voices, and relentless pacing in the night, we explore the psychological and paranormal implications of one man's lifelong connection to the otherworldly. Could his curiosity have opened a door that can never be closed?

Dare we say "neo-noir"?In post-war Los Angeles, Ezekiel Rawlins is just trying to keep a roof over his head. Soon, a job opportunity presents itself that will change his life forever. In his first of two appearances this month, Denzel brings Walter Mosely's Easy Rawlins to the screen. Although it deviates from the novel in some places, the plot unfolds in a crafty, writerly style. Oh man, who am i writing for? Don Cheadle steals the show in this one as Mouse. Lisa Nicole Carson (Coretta) blew us away in her limited screen time. And Barry Shabaka Henley is perfect as the Woodcutter. Outro: Marysue performing Devil with a Blue Dress On

Big weekend at the movie as audiences around the world got to see the long awaited Wicked Part 1 and Gladiator II. Before the guys get into their thoughts on Ridley Scott's latest, Ryan shares his reactions to Wicked Part 1, and why for him, the film is mostly frustrating experiences with a couple of good performances in it. After that, Ryan and Jay dive right into Gladiator II, a film over twenty years in the making, as Scott dives back into the world he created in 2000's Best Picture winning epic. The boys were mixed on it, with Jay not being as positive on the film as Ryan is, with the totality of the conversation focusing on the film's script, Scott and his team's craft of recreating Rome, if Paul Mescal is a “movie star,” and Denzel Washington's incredible performance. Once they are done reviewing the film, the episode shifts solely to Washington, one of the greatest movie stars of all time and his magnificent, celebrated career. The two time Oscar winner has built a career on and off screen that rivals many legendary actors and actresses. On episode 70 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the next film in their Carl Franklin series, Out of Time (2003). After the box office failure of Devil in a Blue Dress, and making a Meryl Streep movie (One True Thing) and a standard legal thriller starring Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman (High Crimes), Carl Franklin's last feature film was his last effort at trying to make a entertaining popcorn films starring Denzel Washington, Out of Time. What sounds like an interesting premise of a small town cop racing against the clock when the woman he is seeing ends up the prime murder suspect in his area of Florida, with the team investigating the crime run by his ex-wife (Eva Mendes). In what feels like a discount Tony Scott film, Franklin isn't able to elevate the movie beyond just being a decent film that Denzel carries to the finish line. Ryan and Jay talk about their thoughts on the film, diving into some heavy Jimmy Buffett references, Dean Cain's filmography, the illogical ending of the film, how much they've loved talking about Denzel Washington films this year, the sad reality behind where Franklin's career is now, as well as give their ranks of the films within this short but important series. On episode 69 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the next film in their Carl Franklin series, Devil in a Blue Dress (1995). Following the massive success of One False Move, Franklin turned down the opportunity to work on bigger studio films to adapt a neo-noir mystery thriller based on the popular series of books by Walter Mosley. With an Oscar winning star, Denzel Washington, on the poster to go along with an impressive ensemble cast around him, detailed production design and world building within the script, this movie was destined to be the start of a new Hollywood movie series. But sadly, we never go to see more stories of Easy Rawlins on the big screen, with the film earning a cult status since its release, becoming another gem in Franklin's filmography. Ryan and Jay break down their thoughts on the film, the history behind the making of this movie, their continued love for Denzel, the amazing performance from Don Cheadle, the film's SAG nomination, the racial dynamics of the film, and answer why they think audiences didn't connect with it when it came out. Note: I revisited a chat with the amazing Walter Mosley from 2021. Celebrated author, Walter Mosley, took a timeout to chat with me about how he didn't write a sentence he liked until age 35, the sprawling muse of Los Angeles, and his conflicted feelings after winning a big National Book Award. “Write your truth, and believe in it. And if your mother doesn't like it ... too bad.” – Walter Mosley Walter is the first Black man to receive the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters for lifetime achievement in writing. The critically acclaimed author, playwright, screenwriter, and producer has written over 60 books including fiction (literary, mystery, and science fiction), writing guides, memoir, a YA novel, has won dozens of prestigious awards (including an Emmy), and been translated into 25 languages. His bestselling historical mysteries feature infamous, hard-boiled detective "Easy" Rawlins, a black PI living in the Watts neighborhood of LA. Blood Grove (Easy Rawlins Book 15) is the latest in that series and described as "... a novel of vast scope and intimate insight, and a soulful call for justice by any means necessary." Walter's work has also been adapted for film and TV including Devil in a Blue Dress (starring Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle and Jennifer Beals) and the HBO production of Always Outnumbered (starring Laurence Fishburne and Natalie Cole). Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 68 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the first film in their Carl Franklin series, One False Move (1992). Much like Terrence Malick, the subject of the last Director Watch series, director Carl Franklin came out of the AFI Conservatory ready to take the world on fire as a force behind the camera. In his first couple of films, he was taken under the wing of producer Roger Corman, who saw something in a young Franklin and gave him the necessary experience to then make something of his own. By the early 1990s, when the American indie film era was beginning, Franklin made one of the most vital crime thrillers of the decade with One False Move, a film centered around a small town sheriff waiting for three killers to enter his town, with a connection to who they are leading to a dangerous conclusion. With a script written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, Franklin was able to tap into the insecurities of being in a small town position as a police officer, the danger of being a fugitive on the run, and the racial dynamics (and insecurities) at the heart of the story. Ryan and Jay break down Franklin's early work, their thoughts on the overall film, Bill Paxton and Cynda Williams' performances, the film's shocking ending, the tragic final shot of the film, Thornton's career as a writer, and how influential a movie like this was for the decade. We head into the “eye of the storm” as MSNBC legal analysts Andrew Weissmann and Mary McCord explore the nature of Stormy Daniel's testimony in depth, and why her credibility is less at issue than that of others who facilitated the hush payments to her. Then, they turn their prosecutorial expertise to understanding why the defense's mistrial motion was denied by Judge Merchan. And lastly, Andrew and Mary detail what to glean from Judge Cannon's indefinite postponement of the classified documents trial in Florida.
