When a scaled down, revival production of Chicago launched a 4-day run at City Center Encores before transferring to Broadway in 1996, no one anticipated that the show would still be running on Broadway after 28 years and over 11,000 performances. It's the second longest running Broadway show ever after Phantom of the Opera. Producers Fran and Barry Weissler share insider stories with Michael Riedel about how many people in the Broadway community questioned the wisdom behind the launch. Michael also speaks with Joel Grey about playing Amos against normal type casting, and he talks with marketing superstar Drew Hodges about his steamy, minimalist ad campaign for the show. Plus Ann Reinking weighs in on the risky photo shoot. This episode features never-before-heard excerpts from the interviews Michael Riedel recorded while writing his 2020 best-selling book Singular Sensation: The Triumph of Broadway. Orion Pictures wanted a 'red, white, and blue-collar Bond' in Remo Williams, but budget cuts didn't allow the movie to truly bloom. It's still a rollicking good time, even if you don't think it's as good as it was when you first saw it. Starring Fred Ward, Joel Grey, Wilford Brimley, J. A. Preston, and Kate Mulgrew.

Taylor, Anthony, and Nick wrap up their Holiday Trilogy with some perfect movies for Christmas (well, two actual Christmas movies and one that has a Christmas scene in it): First up, Nick recommends The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017), a fictionalized origin story of how Charles Dickens was inspired to write his classic story, A Christmas Carol. Then, Taylor recommends one of his favorite adaptations of that classic Dickens tale, A Christmas Carol (1999). This TV movie stars Patrick Stewart as Scrooge, Richard E. Grant as Bob Cratchit, and Joel Grey as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Finally, Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) is NOT a Christmas movie (though it was released on Christmas Day 2003). But Anthony insists that he watches it every December to get himself in the Yuletide season. Taylor insists that Anthony chose this movie just to irritate him. You be the judge!Listen in for more on these movies and several bonus recommendations! __________Taylor Zaccario…Host, Director, Producer, WriterNick Zaccario…Host, Director, Producer, Editor Anthony Graziani…Correspondent Megan Zaccario…Holiday Trilogy Announcer
Merry Christmas from all of us here at the Video Store Podcast! I've picked out a few lesser-known Christmas specials from Rankin/Bass for this week's show. The first is The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold from 1981. Originally conceived as a St. Patrick's Day special, this story was reimagined as a Christmas special for ABC. Join sailor Dinty Doyle as he works to guard the Leprechaun's gold from the evil banshee, Mag the Hag. Next is 1974's ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, starring George Gobel, Joel Grey, and Tammy Grimes. Clockmaker Joshua Trundle has made a clock that will bring back Christmas cheer and make amends with an offended Santa Claus. However, when a curious mouse gets into the clock…well…kerplunk? Kerplooey. Can they fix it in time to save Christmas? Watch and find out. Nestor, the Long-eared Christmas Donkey from 1977 is next on our playlist of Rankin/Bass B-sides. Based on the Gene Autry song of the same name, Nestor is a long-eared donkey who is bullied for his unusually long ears. It's those ears that get him into trouble, but they also allow him to do something no one else can do—safely take Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem where the Lord Jesus will be born. This is a tear-jerker, so grab some tissues along with your eggnog. The last selection for our show today is The Little Drummer Boy: Book II from 1976. This lesser-known sequel to 1968's The Little Drummer Boy takes the little drummer boy, Aaron, King Melchior, and a bellmaker named Simeon on a quest to retrieve Simeon's stolen bells he made to ring in the birth of the Christ child. Can they get the bells back? You'll have to watch and find out. Thanks for joining us this holiday season on the Video Store Podcast. We hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday and a blessed new year. This is a public episode. pWotD Episode 2763: Wicked (musical) Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 367,870 views on Sunday, 24 November 2024 our article of the day is Wicked (musical).Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It is a loose adaptation of the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaptation. The musical is told from the perspective of two witches, Elphaba and Galinda, before and after Dorothy's arrival in Oz. The story explores the complex friendship between Elphaba (who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (who becomes Glinda the Good). Their relationship is tested by their contrasting personalities, conflicting viewpoints, shared love interest, reactions to the corrupt rule of the Wonderful Wizard, and ultimately, Elphaba's tragic fall.Produced by Universal Stage Productions with producers Marc Platt, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone, director Joe Mantello and choreographer Wayne Cilento, the original production of Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, after completing pre-Broadway tryouts at San Francisco's Curran Theatre in May and June of that year. Its original stars included Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. The original Broadway production won a total of three Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award. The success of the Broadway production has spawned many productions worldwide, including a long-running West End production. Wicked has broken box-office records around the world, holding weekly-gross-takings records in Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London. In the week ending January 2, 2011, the London, Broadway, and both North American touring productions simultaneously broke their respective records for the highest weekly gross. In the final week of 2013, the Broadway production broke this record again, earning $3.2 million. In 2016, Wicked surpassed $1 billion in total Broadway revenue, joining The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as the only Broadway shows to do so. In 2017, Wicked surpassed The Phantom of the Opera as Broadway's second-highest grossing musical, trailing only The Lion King.A two-part film adaptation was directed by Jon M. Chu and starred Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Galinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. The first part was released on November 22, 2024, with the second part to premiere on November 21, 2025.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:39 UTC on Monday, 25 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Wicked (musical) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Matthew.
Let me tell you something about life, old chum. It's only a cabaret. Kill Nazis. November is for the musicals and we're RAISING THE CURTAIN & BELTING THE CHORUS all month long and it's time to hit up a Bob Fosse joint in this iconic adaptation starring stage legend and Queen of the Theatre Nerds, Liza Minelli. Bob is learning this shit for the first time but you theater nerds already know about the most prolific film in Minelli's life and career and it's none other than Fosse's 1961 hit “CABARET” also starring Michael York, Joel Grey and more. There is no richer era to strike negative social parallels than early to mid-century Germany. The Kit Kat Club seems like a grand ‘ol time but it's only a matter of time before the audience turns on their entertainment. In the thick of it is Sally Bowls, lore accurate OG Manic Pixie Dream Girl, and her timid soon-to-be lover, Brian. It's a freewheeling, song slinging, sugar baby life. Love has its ups and downs and sometimes you end hooking up with your girlfriend's sugar daddy. It's a rather unique story to tell to a broad audience in 1972 (and before). Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.Support the show
What would you do? What will you do? In the election run-up, Peter & Nathan are talking about musicals that deal with political unrest and social change (don't worry, it's still fun!). We begin with the 1966 Broadway classic Cabaret, one of the darkest, kinkiest, and most-enduring musicals of all time. We talk about: – Willkommen / Two Ladies / The Money Song: The "decadence" depicted by the emcee and the performers of the Kit Kat Klub (KKK, anyone?) in 1930s Berlin on the eve of Nazism. Does Cabaret hold this very queer decadence as responsible for the rise of fascism, or is there something deeper at work? – Married / So What / What Would You Do? Bob Fosse's 1972 film version of Cabaret eliminates most of the traditional musical theatre story exemplified in the romance between Fraulein Schneider & Herr Schultz. But these two characters—and the songs that Kander & Ebb wrote for them—carry much of the show's political weight – and its emotional heart. Is Fraulein Schneider secretly Cabaret's protagonist? – Don't Tell Mama & Cabaret: We talk about one of Cabaret's most well-known characters, Sally Bowles. What does she mean when she sings that "life is a cabaret?" – Tomorrow Belongs to Me: The incredible music of Cabaret – hymns, patriotic anthems, folk songs and music hall ditties – raises provocative questions about entertainment, pleasure, emotional release, and the rise of demonic ideologies. Religion traffics in some of the same territory. Is good music morally neutral... or not? You'll hear Joel Grey, Jill Haworth, Lotte Lenya, Jack Gilford and the cast of the 1966 Original Broadway Cast – as well as Mark Lambert on the 1972 film soundtrack singing “Tomorrow Belongs to Me”.

Comedy/music person Josh McLane (HEELS) comes by to help Steph and Andy unpack ev-e-ry-thing about 1972's iconic musical about theater, abortion, and Nazis, Cabaret! We got Liza! We got Basil Exposition! Joel Grey's accent! Get your popcorn for this one, we were havin' a good ol' time and we went a lil bit long. Josh talks about how being a former strip club DJ helps him connect to this movie. Andy is furious about a couple of the Oscars this movie won over The Godfather. Steph calls it: Liza is manic pixie dream girling and, simultaneously, eating. PLUS Josh brings an original song from HEELS to add to this movie (and lots of tangents)!! Hosted on Acast. Musical month continues with Indy's favourite, the 1972 film Cabaret! It's a long one, but a good one as we discuss; the performance of Liza Minnelli, thoughts of political apathy, the amazing songs, the insidious spread of fascism, disturbing visuals, and how it is the perfect version of a 1970s musical. Cabaret is a 1972 American musical period drama film directed by Bob Fosse from a screenplay by Jay Presson Allen, based on the stage musical of the same name by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff, which in turn was based on the 1951 play I Am a Camera by John Van Druten and the 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. It stars Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem, Marisa Berenson, Fritz Wepper, and Joel Grey. Multiple numbers from the stage score were used for the film, which also featured three other songs by Kander and Ebb, including two written for the adaptation. The band released Dethalbum II on September 29, 2009, and toured with Mastodon, High on Fire, and Converge. The band's third album, Dethalbum III, was released on October 16, 2012. The soundtrack to the special episode, Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem was released on October 29, 2013. A real band was set up in order to perform the band's music in live shows. Both bands were created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha. The music heard on Metalocalypse is performed by Brendon Small, with others needed for live concerts and albums. Metalocalypse is an American musical adult animated television series created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha for Adult Swim. It premiered on August 6, 2006. The television program centers on the larger-than-life melodic death metal band Dethklok, and often portrays dark and macabre content, including such subjects as violence, death, and the drawbacks of fame, with hyperbolic black comedy. The show was widely heralded as both a parody and a pastiche of heavy metal culture. He fell in love with Broadway shows at the tender age of 7, and when he was 10 years old, he started a blog called “Broadway Baby”. Learn more about the team of indie authors at Crazy 8 Press and how Michael Jan Friedman keeps things in line as writer and editor of multiple anthologies and his own work on this episode of And I Quote. We will also be taking your questions! Michael Jan Friedman is the author of nearly 70 books of fiction and non-fiction, about half of them set somewhere in the wilds of the Star Trek universe. In 1992 Friedman wrote Reunion, the first Star Trek: The Next Generation hardcover, which introduced the crew of the Stargazer, Captain Jean-Luc Picard's first command. Over the years, the popularity of Reunion has spawned a number of Stargazer stories in both prose and comic book formats, including a six-novel original series. Friedman has also written for the Aliens, Predator, Wolf Man, Lois and Clark, DC Super Hero, Marvel Super Hero, and Wishbone licensed book universes. Eleven of his book titles, including the autobiography Hollywood Hulk Hogan and Ghost Hunting (written with SciFi's Ghost Hunters), have appeared on the prestigious New York Times primary bestseller list, and his novel adaptation of the Batman & Robin movie was for a time the #1 bestselling book in Poland (really). Friedman has worked at one time or another in network and cable television, radio, business magazines, and the comic book industry, in the process producing scripts for nearly 180 comic stories. Among his comic book credits is the Darkstars series from DC Comics, which he created with artist Larry Stroman, and the Outlaws limited series, which he created with artist Luke McDonnell. He also co-wrote the story for the acclaimed second-season Star Trek: Voyager episode “Resistance,” which guest-starred Joel Grey. My guest today worked for Club Med from 1990 to 1999 and was a Set Designer, Choreographer, and Chief of Animation. He met John Shelly in New York City on an elevator and John gave him his business card. A few months later, my guest called John and was in a village less than a week later! His first season was in Club Med St. Lucia in 1990 as a Set Designer. Please help me welcome, from Toronto, Ontario, the only and only, Graham Maxwell!! As I discovered during this interview, Graham is one heck of a raconteur so get ready to be entertained! I don't want to spoil any of his stories, so please do yourself a favor and listen to his entire interview! Graham tells a story about how he was not really feeling his first season, but a talk with Angie Boucher (who was Aerobics at the time) about how animation works and how Club Med functions as a whole, changed his mind and he decided to stay. Graham worked with many notable CDVs such as Kevin Batt, Hammer, Dirk Nouira, Pierre Letellier Gagnon, Howard McCarley, and Miredieu, to name but a few. Graham talks about one of the shows he is most known for and that is the rock opera “Tommy”, which he saw on Broadway in 1993 and adapted for a Club Med audience. He had quite the celebrity encounters, including being Jennifer Coolidge's scene partner when the Groundlings, an improvisation and sketch comedy theatre from Los Angeles, came to Turks and Caicos in 1996-1997. He also met Joel Grey, Mitzie Gaynor, Mickey Rooney, Patti LuPone, and five-time Grammy award winner Michael Bublé, who was a Club Med Artiste in Club Med Cancun in '97 if you can believe that! Graham mentions a lot of names from the past, so if you were an early 90s G.O., you will love this episode with a very entertaining person! (Editor's note: The song by Patti Lupone that I meant was the best song ever sung is “Don't Cry for Me Argentina” from the Broadway play “Evita” and not the song Evita as I had stated). Please enjoy!! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. Trying new things requires a certain level of confidence that most people are not born with — we have to work at it! In this episode of Little Kids, Big Hearts, Todd talks with River, Taylor, and Leo about trying new things. They go on an imaginary journey to the Land of Qook-a-Lackas where they meet Crayton the Dragon, who's learning how to fly!
