Marlee Silva is a renowned Australian Rugby League journalist. Her love for the game began practically from the moment she was born, which was just three days before her dad won a premiership with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. As a Dunghutti and Gamilaroi woman, storytelling has been part of Marlee's Indigenous Australian culture for over 60,000 years. So as a proud supporter of the NRLW, it only felt natural that telling stories about women's rugby league is what Marlee was destined to do.But now she's dipped into Longform storytelling to tackle some of the biggest issues within the game. This week Chloe caught up with Marlee following the release of her new documentary: Skin in the Game.Skin in the Game examines the role that Rugby League has played in Australia's history of domestic and family violence and what the sport can do to be part of the solution. Gamilaroi and Dunghutti woman Marlee Silva takes a bold look at rugby league's impact on Australian identity in 'Skin in the Game' - premiering Sunday, 23 March, on NITV, SBS, and SBS On Demand.
The biggest takeaway from the Las Vegas launch in 2025 was that there were too many games, so what does next year look like and will the debut of women's footy in Vegas stay? Author, podcaster and Rugby League broadcaster Marlee Silva chats to Declan Byrne on 'The Saturday Sledge' to discuss why it's a bad idea to cut the girls from the lineup and what game it should be in 2026.
Valentine Holmes is one of the NRL’s most dynamic and versatile players and sits down with Nine's Marlee Silva. Born in Townsville with proud Samoan heritage, he made his mark early with the Cronulla Sharks, playing a key role in their historic 2016 premiership win. Known for his speed, skill, and game-changing ability, Val has represented Queensland and Australia at the highest level. His journey also took him to the U.S., where he pursued an NFL dream before returning to the NRL with the North Queensland Cowboys. Now a leader on and off the field, he continues to inspire with his passion and dedication to the game.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Marlee Silva from Nine's NRL team is joined by one of the biggest current family names in rugby league - Tom, Jake and Ben Trbojevic. Known for their talent, toughness, and humility, the boys open up about family, culture, and the journey from playing footy in the backyard to representing their club, state, and country. It’s a chat about brotherhood, sacrifice, and what drives them both on and off the field.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With her debut feature documentary film Queens of Concrete, Eliza Cox takes audiences on a seven year journey with three skateboarders: Ava Godfrey, Charlotte Heath, and Hayley Wilson. They each embrace a different style of skateboarding, with street and park being the two styles that are featured at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. It's that 2020 Olympics that the girls have their sights set on, with Eliza following their journey from the skateparks of Melbourne to the sponsored events in London and LA, to boarding schools dedicated to bringing up the next generation of skaters. There's an inherent drama to skateboarding - you never know if the skater is going to fall, what they're going to pull off, and how they're going to take a risky jump - and that's paired well with the inherent drama of being a teenager turning into an adult. Or, in the case of Charlotte, a kid turning into a teenager. Each of the girls has their own life journey to follow, and Eliza's dedicated observational lens follows them in a caring and considered manner. This is not a director simply documenting the lives of their subjects, but supporting their journey in an empathetic manner.Queens of Concrete moves in the same vein as the great skating docos of the turn of the millennium, with Eliza noting the impact that Dogtown and Z-Boys had on her work. As a viewer, I couldn't help but feel the pull of Eddie Martin's excellent All This Mayhem, a film which also hails from the streets of Melbourne. Either way, the impact of sports documentaries is a strong one on Eliza's creative vision.I caught up with Eliza ahead of the AIDC panel Levelling the Playing Field: Celebrating Trailblazers in Sports Docs, where she joins fellow documentarians Frances Elliott, who co-directed Renee Gracie: Fireproof, and Marlee Silva, of the upcoming film Skin in the Game. In the following interview, we talk about her journey into filmmaking, what it means to be a supportive director, the choice behind making a sports film about girls or a film about girls who skate, and a lot more.If you're in Naarm-Melbourne this weekend, then make yourself known and head along to ACMI on Monday 3 March where you can catch Levelling the Playing Field, alongside a stack more great panels and events at the Australian International Documentary Conference. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

When Kath Ruska's dad told her white people would never recognise Aboriginal culture, she hoped he was wrong. She became a famous poet, using her pen as a weapon to fight for Indigenous rights. Her words took her all the way to Parliament House, where she demanded the Prime Minister do more to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. But she still had an English name, so she changed it to Aboriginal language -Oodgeroo, meaning paper bark, and Noonuccal, the name of her tribe. Oodgeroo moved back to her island home — Minjerribah — and figured out the best way to make sure her culture was always remembered: she taught it to children, black and white. Narrated by Gamilaroi and Dunghutti writer and podcast maker, Marlee Silva. Extra narration by Peggy Webber.
