Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.15.340851v1?rss=1 Authors: Perez-Sisques, L., Martin-Flores, N., Masana, M., Solana, J., Llobet, A., Romani-Aumedes, J., Canal, M., Campoy, G., Garcia, E., Sanchez, N., Fernandez, S., Gilbert, J. P., Rodriguez, M. J., Man, H., Feinstein, E., Williamson, D., Soto, D., Gasull, X., Alberch, J., Malagelada, C. Abstract: RTP801/REDD1 is a stress-regulated protein whose upregulation is necessary and sufficient to trigger neuronal death in in vitro and in vivo models of Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases and is up regulated in compromised neurons in human postmortem brains of both neurodegenerative disorders. Indeed, in both Parkinson's and Huntington's disease mouse models, RTP801 knockdown alleviates motor-learning deficits. Here, we investigated the physiological role of RTP801 in neuronal plasticity. RTP801 is found in rat, mouse and human synapses. The absence of RTP801 enhanced excitatory synaptic transmission in both neuronal cultures and brain slices from RTP801 knock-out (KO) mice. Indeed, RTP801 KO mice showed improved motor learning, which correlated with lower spine density but increased basal filopodia and mushroom spines in the motor cortex layer V. This paralleled with higher levels of synaptosomal GluA1 and TrkB receptors in homogenates derived from KO mice motor cortex, proteins that are associated with synaptic strengthening. Altogether, these results indicate that RTP801 has an important role modulating neuronal plasticity in motor learning. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
Dooner’s World - Marlon Hoffman – Episode 31Topics: 1. Growing up St Louis, MS 2. The Coolest Jimmy Page story ever!! Marlon met a young Jimmy Page on the beach in Miami, befriended him to the point that Jimmy setup a folding chair on the stage, right neo his amp for 2 shows!! A few years later, Marlon showed up at a Lez Zep show backstage saying that he knew Jimmy. A loaded, bearded Jimmy came out and didn’t recognize him – broke poor Marlon’s heart but it didn’t kill his spirit!! He rocked on!!! 3. Meeting George Harrison 4. Ride Captain Ride writer – Mike Penata 5. 6. His buddy, Frank Zappa Freak Out guitarist, Elliot Ingber – writer of “Don’t Bogart That Joint” Marlon Hoffman offers an amazing musical journey with his rock 'n' roll stylings! Raised on Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Patti Page, Harry Belafonte, Burl Ives, and Fess Parker he formed his first band as a drummer by the age of ten. Other influences included The Four Seasons, Leonard Bernstein, The Beach Boys, Chubby Checker, and The Beatles. Marlon's mother was very musical and her father "Grandpa Dave" and his wife were both musicians. The family was always singing songs around the piano. "I fell in love with Gene Autrey and Roy Rodgers and then Elvis Presley. My mother was always playing Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald," he says. "We watched the 'Lawrence Welk Show' and “Sing along with Mitch'. There was always music in my home." At twelve years old Marlon was playing tunes by the Yardbirds and the Kinks. He even met Jimmy Page and carried his guitar for a Yardbird gig! He also loves James Brown, Sly, Aretha, The Staple Singers, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, and all the rest. Marlon has had many successful bands throughout the years but for his current incarnation, he believed in leaving it up to a Higher Power. "I said to myself, 'I'm just gonna sit here and play my guitar and sing my songs until something happens.' I've been all over this country, played on the streets, lived in my van with an electric guitar and a little amp. Now I have a home, a number of guitars and a little studio and I said 'I'm just going to keep playing until the right folks arrive.' And it happens!'" My current lineup is John O’kennedy and Jody Daley on guitars, Jon Poli and Martin Flores on Percussion, John Harjo on Keys. Rounding all this out is Jessica Garcia and ˚Kimzey Mcgrath on vocals. Understaffed and overworked, members of the Salinas Fire Department are on pace to answer 14-15,000 calls this year. Salinas is home to 76 firefighters at the taping of this episode and there is room for at least 9 more. Being understaffed by 9 firefighters may not sound like a lot, but realize that Salinas Firefighters are sent to help in emergencies such as Hurricane Irma and wildfires here in California. That puts on extra pressure for the firefighters here in town to pick up extra shifts week after week. This week it's an honor to sit down with Josh Hostetter, President of the Salinas Firefighters Local 1270, and Martin Flores, Salinas born firefighter on 9/11.
