In 1943, Philip K. Wrigley (of chewing gum fame!) founded the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in order to maintain sport and public morale during World War II, at a time when many eligible young men, including professional sportsmen, were drafted to fight overseas.Whilst A League of Their Own is a mostly fictional account of the players and founders behind the AAGPBL, it still tells a story of the real-life resilience, spirit and tenacity of the young women involved, many of whom had husbands fighting in the war, coming together to provide entertainment and boost the morale of the nation through sport, despite the sexism and misogyny of the era.Penny Marshall's 1992 movie remains my favourite, and dare I say it, the greatest sports movie of all time. A story of determination, sisterly love, sacrifice and friendship within the very real backdrop of World War II, when women could finally prove they were more than just potential housewives and mothers.Geena Davis embodies the 40s starlet as the statuesque, seemingly perfect Dottie Hinson. Tom Hanks, playing against type as alcoholic ex-player-turned-manager Jimmy Dugan delivers most of the movie's iconic lines. Lori Petty as Kit Keller, just wants to step out of her older sister's perfect shadow and Madonna, in probably one of her most beloved screen roles, as "All The Way" Mae Mordabito, with a great on-screen comedic partnership with Rosie O'Donnell's brash Doris Murphy.Even though the real AAGPBL was dismantled in 1954, its legacy lives on in this movie. It encapsulates a time in recent history that not many are still alive to tell the story of. Sadly, Mary Pratt, the last remaining member of that inaugural 1943 Rockford Peaches roster, passed away just before this episode was (originally) released. She lived to 101 and spent her life championing women's sport. These women were inspirational, trail-blazing, legacy-creating and really were in a league of their own.Episode originally released 14th May 2020Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. Today we are headed to the outskirts of Dallas to a seedy area known as Oak Cliff, where income is low, and crime is high. It is 1990, and gangs, drugs, and sex workers frequent the area. Crack was big, and people would do almost anything to get it, including selling themselves for enough money to get a hit of crack, and then the cycle would repeat itself. Officer Regina Smith is on duty on December 13, 1990, when a call comes in pertaining to a body. It was a sex worker by the name of Mary Pratt. Her body was found on a street laid out for all the world to see. Obviously, the killer was proud of his work and wanted everyone to see her. Mary was a drug-addicted sex worker with the track marks to prove it, but there was something different about this murder, and it was gruesome.Join Jen and Cam of Our True Crime Podcast on this episode entitled ‘The Eyes Have It: Charles Albright.'Listener discretion is by the fabu Edward October @octoberpodVHSThe show is EP by Nico @wetalkofdreams; he is the best.Make sure to check out the podcast ‘It's Murder Up North' @murderupnorthListen to their promo during our show.Sources: https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/see-no-evil-3/http://maamodt.asp.radford.edu/Psyc%20405/serial%20killers/Albright,%20Charles.htmhttps://murderpedia.org/male.A/a/albright-charles.htmhttps://web.archive.org/web/20030206063654/http://www.hbo.com/autopsy/episode/episode_5_the_eyeball_killer.htmlhttps://www.audacy.com/krld/articles/news/dallas-historys-notorious-killer-of-prostitutes-has-diedhttps://news.google.com/newspapers?id=fAkgAAAAIBAJ&dq=charles%20albright%20murder&pg=5313%2C5601569https://www.oxygen.com/mark-of-a-killer/season-1/videos/mark-of-a-killer-an-eye-for-murder-season-1-episode-3http://oakcliff.advocatemag.com/2013/08/investigation-discovery-show-spotlights-oak-cliff-serial-killer/http://www.parkaman.com/charles-albright-eyeball-killer/http://documents.latimes.com/charles-f-albright/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1214469/https://mylifeofcrime.wordpress.com/2011/04/28/serial-killer-charles-albright-the-texas-eyeball-killer/https://www.justiceclearinghouse.com/resource/enucleated-a-case-study-of-charles-albright-the-eyeball-killer/https://documentaryheaven.com/born-kill-charles-albright/

Mary Pratt. Cod Fillets on Cardboard Cartons, 1975. oil on panel, Overall (sight): 49.5 × 73 cm. Gift of Norcen Energy Resources Limited, 1986. © Estate of Mary Pratt, 1975. 86/55 This work, entitled Cod Fillets in Cardboard Cartons, by artist Mary Pratt is a photorealistic oil painting. It was created in 1975 and measures 49.5 by 73 cm. Two frozen cod fillets are thawing in their packaging, while light streams across them, casting shadows. Set upon a bare, beige surface, two light brown cartons of fish fillets sit side by side. The carton on the left is positioned slightly higher than the other. Both cardboard cartons are open, lying flat like plates, and contain paper packaging. The carton on the right is torn on the right edge. Barely contained by their makeshift plates, the fish fillets and their packaging occupy the whole area of the cartons. The fillets are thawing to be prepared for a home-cooked meal. The large opaque white flakes of the fillets are lit with a warm yellow light created by the afternoon sun cascading over them. Pratt's attention to precise realism is represented in the stark contrast of light and shadow on the surface of this painting. The light source in this work is set above the subject at the upper border, beyond the bounds of the frame. This creates a hard shadow on the surface, along the lower edge of the cartons. This work is in the Food, Glorious Food section of the exhibition and celebrates our universal impulse to document our food that evokes a sense of nostalgia and warmth.

When we left you at the end of part 1, taxidermy enthusiast, landlord and former bullfighter Charles Albright had begun living a double life. By day, a loving and gentlemanly boyfriend, a considerate friend and a fun-loving softball teammate. By night, a regular in the red-light districts of Dallas—sometimes kind and generous to the sex workers he encountered, sometimes cruel and sadistic. And in December of 1990, the brutal murder of one of those woman had just rocked the community to its core. Mary Pratt had been beaten and shot, and her killer had left a disturbing signature: He'd removed her eyes with surgical precision. As Dallas investigators began their hunt for the killer, they had the sinking feeling that a monster like this doesn't tend to stop with just one. And they were about to find out how right they were. All links and images for this episode can be found on CISO Series (https://cisoseries.com/why-am-i-working-harder-during-this-pandemic/) Is it the increased work or the pandemic itself that's causing us all to work more than we've ever worked before? This episode is hosted by me, David Spark (@dspark), producer of CISO Series and founder of Spark Media Solutions and Mike Johnson. Our guest this week is Christopher Zell, vp, head of information security, The Wendy’s Company. Thanks to this week's podcast sponsor GitGuardian. GitGuardian empowers organizations to secure their secrets - such as API keys and other credentials - from being exposed in compromised places or leaked publicly. GitGuardian offers a threat intelligence solution focused on detecting secrets leaked on public GitHub and an automated secrets detection solution which tightly integrates with your DevOps pipeline. On this week's episode Why is everybody talking about this now? On TechRepublic, Scott Matteson wrote an article about cybersecurity pros working harder than ever during the pandemic. Stuart Mitchell of Stott and May posted the article to LinkedIn and asked if anyone has taken a day off since COVID-19 started, and the general consensus is no. I see a multitude of factors affecting this: increased surface area to protect, compliance is more difficult, I also have to deal with my family, and where the heck is anyone going to go for vacation? I guess I'll just work. Close your eyes and visualize the perfect engagement On LinkedIn, our guest Chris Zell asked others to be more welcoming when you see someone post "aspiring cybersecurity professional." We discussed the approach and what the community could teach us. What's Worse?! Three options of how to talk to the board. There’s got to be a better way to handle this On CSO Online, Mary Pratt has a guide for CISOs on securely laying people off. What are critical technical considerations during layoff time, and as a manager how do you manage security for those people who are still there. Have either of you made a massive security mistake during a layoff that was a great learning experience for you? What Is It and Why Do I Care? We played this game before and like the "What's Worse?!" game, the title pretty much explains it. I have three pitches from three different vendors who are all in the same category of governance, risk and compliance or GRC. I have asked the reps to first, in 25 words or less, just explain their category. That’s the “What Is It?” and then for the “Why Do I Care?” I asked them to explain what differentiates their product or makes them unique also in 25 words or less. It is up to Mike and Chris to pick their favorite of each and explain why. I only reveal the winning contestants and their companies. Ready to play?

More likely they’re rolled out and they don’t accomplish what they were supposed to accomplish or not the full impact of what was expected. - Or the software works as designed but the business need has changed and the software doesn’t meet the current needs of the business. - There are still places where IT misses the mark, where IT isn’t delivering what the user community really wants - Good communications is still a high level need - Not all IT organizations understand how the business makes it’s money and how technology needs to support that - Business also needs to understand the limits of technology as well - Important of business and IT being partners, having good communications, setting expectations - Hype around new technologies - Another aspect of failure is around IT implementations, shadow IT, outside of the IT organization - There is good news around Agile implementations - The newer technologies around automation, testing code, are part of the improvements - Failing fast, being better tomorrow, and how failure is viewed, which is positive in moving toward innovation - Technology like cloud and rapid development lower costs for failure, but it doesn’t take into account opportunity costs - There could be a minimum actual cost when fail, but if not about to roll out a feature or a function, you could be losing much, much more in potential revenue - Not all IT projects have the same value to the organization and the consequences can vary significantly - Setting priorities based on business needs and impact is key - Because the cost of failure is coming down, there’s more permission to be innovative and see how it works - There was one person in the article who mentioned that while the individual parts developed using new methods like Agile work, the individual parts work well, but what he’s seen is when organizations move to combine the parts, there are problems with the whole - He drew the analogy is that it’s like treating the individual symptoms but you’re not treating the underlying causes - Questions answered - - What are some of the questions keeping CIOs up at night? - If more organizations are using Agile and other new development methods, why are IT projects still failing? - Besides budget, timelines, and functionality, what are some of the reasons IT projects fail? - Are IT organizations just giving lip service to it being OK to fail? - How are today’s IT failures different than technology failures in the past? - What’s gotten better with IT projects? - How do those in technology keep up with the changing business needs? - Is there any good news around Agile projects? - What is the good news around Agile projects? - How should CIOs set IT priorities?
