Spar was born and raised in the suburbs of New York City, attending public schools. A violinist since age 6, he earned his bachelor's degree in music education from Ohio State University, graduating in 1994. That same year, he went to Daytona Beach to teach at Turie T. Small Elementary School, where more than 90 percent of the students lived in poverty. The music teacher soon found his voice as an advocate and has worked ever since on behalf of public school students, schools, teachers and education staff professionals. "I could not read when I was in first grade," Spar recalls. "I struggled in school. But the educators in my life were empowered to make my success a priority, and that's just what they did. I want the same world for my family and for all of Florida's children." At Turie T. Small, Spar served as school-improvement chair for two years and as a union steward for seven years. He would go on to become president of his local union in May 2003 and led Volusia United Educators until he was elected FEA vice president in 2018. In September 2020, he was named FEA president after the previous president, Fedrick C. Ingram, was elected secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Teachers. During his 15 years leading the Volusia union, Spar negotiated 14 contracts, handled numerous grievances and arbitrations, and spent many long hours advocating for members and working families. In 2017, he led the merger of the Volusia Teachers Organization and the Volusia Educational Support Association to create Volusia United Educators. The new union has nearly 3,800 members and represents more than 6,000 teachers, paraprofessionals and office specialists in Volusia County Schools. Throughout his career, Spar has served on committees and task forces for the AFT. At FEA, he spent eight years on the executive cabinet. He also has served on the executive board of the Florida AFL-CIO and was secretary-treasurer of the organization from January 2016 until September 2020. Spar's wife, Vernell, is also a public school music teacher. The Spars have two daughters; both girls attend public schools. The Washington Monthly called him as "one of America's most important journalists." The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens. Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump's was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House. The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page. Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times. Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy. In addition to her academic appointment, she is co-leader of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network, which connects scholars, journalists, and policymakers to translate academic findings into public facing work that tackles public policy challenges and promotes democracy. She is the 2025 Author-in-Residence in Healthcare Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute. Her research has appeared in the American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Law, Economics and Organization, Scientific Reports, World Medical & Health Policy Journal, and the Journal of Health Politics, Policy, and Law, with additional health politics writings in such outlets as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, STATNews, and The Hill. Hey Friends I am still fighting a rare but tough cold and so I was not able to produce a news segment today but I do have a GREAT conversation with a brilliant first time guest that I think you will love I hope you had a great weekend and I am happy we made to to May together All of Atima's Links Named to Ebony Magazine's "Power 100" list of emerging leaders and Jet Magazine's "40 Under 40" list, Atima Omara works and leads at the intersection of electoral politics and issue advocacy in the progressive movement. She is a political strategist, advocate, trainer, leader, and speaker with significant political, government, and non-profit experience, and she is a sought-after commentator and strategist. As the President & Chief Strategist of Omara Strategy Group, she provides strategic consulting to progressive candidates and organizations centering women and people of color in their mission and work. She strategizes with candidates and political organizations to win victories for a more reflective progressive democracy. An American-born child of Black immigrants, Atima realized early the importance of catalyzing social and electoral change from both the grassroots and leadership levels—especially among underrepresented communities. She has worked as Special Assistant to then-Virginia Governor Mark Warner, and then went to work as an organizer in multiple states with a union and community organizations on voter registration, ballot initiatives, and get-out-the-vote operations in low-income communities of color and immigrant communities. She is also a former candidate for public and political party office herself, and draws from her lived and professional experience to train activists to organize and candidates from historically marginalized communities to run for office for many organizations including: Emerge America, Higher Heights for America, Vote Run Lead, Running Start, New American Leaders, and National Council for Independent Living. Prior to that, Atima built her executive leadership experience from serving as Vice President of Reproductive Health Technologies Project, a research based advocacy organization; a Director on the political project #VOTEPROCHOICE (VPC) where she managed successful voter engagement campaigns on behalf of VPC for progressive state and local candidates; and as a nationally elected leader of the Young Democrats of America (YDA), the nation's largest partisan youth organization from 2013-15. She was the first Black president and only the fifth woman to lead the organization in its 80+ year history. During her tenure as YDA President, she grew national membership and led an independent expenditure to targeted states in 2014 that increased the youth vote turnout for Democrats in critical races. She is an original board member for Emerge Virginia and a founding board member of Virginia's List PAC, two organizations helping to elect more Democratic women. She previously served as Board Chair and Vice Chair of the Planned Parenthood Metro Washington Action Fund. The seasoned political leader is currently an elected member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) since 2016 and elected vice chair of the DNC's Women's Caucus since 2017. Atima has published articles in American Prospect, The Root, Salon, Politico, Ms., Ebony, and The Lily (a Washington Post publication) among other notable publications and provided commentary to CNN, MSNBC/NBC, PBS, BBC, Fox News, Fox Business, NPR, Sirius XM, and other national TV & radio outlets. She has also been quoted in The Washington Post, The Atlantic, TIME, USA TODAY, Politico, Mother Jones, Newsweek, MTV News, and Refinery 29. Ray Madoff is a professor at Boston College Law School, where she teaches and writes in philanthropy policy, taxes, property, and estate planning. She is Co-founder and Director of the Boston College Law School Forum on Philanthropy and the Public Good, a non-partisan think tank that convenes scholars and practitioners to explore questions regarding whether the rules governing the charitable sector best serve the public good. Madoff is the author of Immortality and the Law: The Rising Power of the American Dead (Yale University Press), which looks at how American law treats the interests of the dead and what this tells us about our values for the living. The Financial Times called it "a sparkling polemic." She is also the lead author on one of the top treatises on estate planning entitled Practical Guide to Estate Planning (CCH). Madoff's expertise includes philanthropy policy, the rights of the dead (including the ability of the dead to control their bodies, reputation, and property), estate taxes, comparative inheritance law, and wealth inequality and taxes. A regular commentator on a number of these topics, Madoff has appeared on dozens of national radio shows including On Point, Talk of the Nation, All Things Considered, Here and Now, and Marketplace, among others. Madoff is a frequent contributor to the opinion pages of the New York Times and has published op-eds in the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, LA Times, Boston Globe and Chronicle of Philanthropy. Among her professional activities, Madoff is a member of the American Law Institute, an academic fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estate Counsel, and past president of the American Association of Law Schools' Trusts and Estates Section. She was named a 2014 Top Women of the Law by Mass Lawyer's Weekly and Critic of the Year by Inside Philanthropy. She was also named to the NonProfit Times Power & Influence Top 50 in 2017 and 2018 for her work promoting reform of the tax rules governing philanthropy. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise's antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. From there, he became a community organizer in New Orleans' public housing, and a policy analyst for a children's advocacy group focused on combatting poverty and economic inequity. Prior to being appointed to her current position, Emily was the Program Manager for the Transition and Care Management (TCM) program at VANJHCS which serves Post 9/11 Veterans, providing case management and other support services. She began her career with the VHA in 2008 when she was hired as a CBOC Social worker at the Hudson Valley VA Health Care System. In that capacity she provided concrete services, case management and crisis intervention to Veterans in a Primary Care clinic. This allowed her to learn the VHA system inside and out rather quickly. Prior to joining VA, Ms. Feiner enjoyed a varied career in Social Work spanning over two decades. She worked with adolescents and young adults in schools and an outpatient clinic, homeless pregnant women in a maternity shelter, and was the Director of an Outpatient Substance Abuse Counseling Center. Ms. Feiner was also an adjunct professor of Social Work at Fordham Graduate School of Social Services where she taught courses in Advanced Practice, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Substance Abuse Treatment and Clinical Practice seminar. In addition, she also taught in the Human Services program at Westchester Community College. She has maintained a private psychotherapy practice since 1988. Emily has always had a strong commitment to her community and has served on the boards of several community agencies including HeadStart of Rockland and Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic. She was twice elected to her local Village Board of trustees. Ms. Feiner holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College and a Masters of Social Work from Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has completed the coursework for a PhD in Social Work at New York University. She is the proud mother of two young adults, and enjoys going to hear live music, skiing and hiking in her free time. BUY HIS NEW ALBUM--- "Show Your Work: Live at QED" Finnegan is perhaps best known as one of the original panelists on VH1's Best Week Ever and as Chad, the only white roommate in the “Mad Real World” sketch on Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show. Additional television appearances as himself or performing stand up have included “Conan”, “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson”, "Would You Rather...with Graham Norton", “Good Afternoon America” and multiple times on The Today Show and Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and on History's I Love the 1880s. He hosted TV Land's game show "Game Time". As an actor, Finnegan portrayed the supporting role of "Carl" in the film Eden Court, a ticket agent in "Knight and Day" and several guest roles including a talk show host on "The Good Wife". In October 2006, Finnegan's debut stand up comedy CD titled Two For Flinching was released by Comedy Central Records, with a follow-up national tour of college campuses from January to April 2007. “Au Contraire!” was released by Warner Bros. Records in 2009. His third special "The Fun Part" was filmed at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston on April 4, 2013 and debuted on Netflix on April 15, 2014.
