In this episode of Trending in Education, we explore the fascinating intersection of neuroscience and resilience in education. We speak with Dr. Horacio Sanchez, the founder and CEO of Resiliency, Inc, about his groundbreaking work with K-12 systems.   We dive into Dr. Sanchez's origin story and learn how his early work as the youngest director of mental health in North Carolina led him to develop a resiliency-based treatment model for at-risk kids. We discuss how increasing protective factors, like positive relationships, can improve brain function and foster resilience, even in those not naturally resilient. We also explore the neuroscience of empathy and how it can be developed in students.   We also tackle critical issues such as the impact of poverty on brain development and the challenges of teaching in today's environment. We discuss the importance of understanding the neuroscience of bias and how it can be addressed in schools. Finally, we consider the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI in education, emphasizing the need to use technology to enhance, not replace, cognitive development.   Key takeaways include: Resilience can be taught by focusing on protective factors and their impact on brain function.   Understanding the neuroscience of empathy can help educators create more supportive and effective learning environments.   Poverty significantly impacts brain development, requiring targeted interventions in schools.   AI has the potential to be a beneficial tool in education, but it must be used thoughtfully to support learning, not replace it.   Tune in to discover how applied neuroscience can transform teaching practices, improve school climate, and empower students to thrive. In this episode with Holly Barnett, I learned all about the new style of breathwork she created called InteroBreath, which is a way of working with the breath that focusses on our sixth sense, interoception.  Holly walks us through the definition of this breathing practice, including what interoception is, how she developed it, why it's so powerful for our health and well-being, and the impact practicing it can have on our horses' well-being!  We also discussed Holly's top not-so-secret secrets as a bodyworker and saddle fitter of over 20 years' experience, and what she's noticed as being the keys to real results in the industry.  Holly is a professional Breathwork Facilitator with a background in Applied Neuroscience. When faced with a sudden surgery she used her knowledge to create a modality to reduce stress, manage her emotions and regulate her nervous system. This method prepared her for a major surgery which resulted in the ideal internal environment for healing. Interoception is the ability to sense, interpret and integrate signals from your body. It is well researched as a fundamental aspect to physical and mental well-being. This practice activates your body's innate healing capabilities and is foundational for self-awareness, self-regulation and self-trust. Breathwork is the conscious awareness and manipulation of your breathing patterns that promote physical, mental and emotional well-being. InteroBreath combines the profound healing and regulating properties of Interoception & Breathwork. Each session is unique, and participants report feeling deeply peaceful post session. Holly leads InteroBreath Club which offers live sessions twice a week. Members (many of whom joined back in January) include equestrians, equine veterinarian, farrier, bodyworker and all report a deeper connection with equine companions and clients through InteroBreath. Holly's mission is to empower people around the world to find inner peace and power by connecting them to their breath and inner state. Equestrians have the added advantage of cultivating even deeper relationships with their equine partners during co-regulation and shared heart space. Holly resides in Puslinch, ON (just west of Toronto, Canada) with her shepherd Jazz, Siamese Cliff and her horses Whiskey & George. For this first conversation with Steve, the Dads discuss the benefits, power, and privilege of carrying the title “Father.” To be able to embrace fatherhood regardless of our biology is an honor, and something not to be taken lightly. If you are a step or “bonus” parent, be sure to listen to this episode. We also discuss the importance of self care. As fathers, we can find ourselves wanting to serve and provide for our families without taking into consideration our own well-being. But as we know, extending ourselves too far can take its toll at home as well as at work. In this first part of our talk with Steve on self care, we begin to affirm fathers and what we can do to strengthen ourselves to best show up at home. You can reach out to Steve at his website, https://steveanderson.coach/. Steve's program, The Best Dad Program, will move you from feeling hopeless to empowered to become the father you are meant to be, and build and maintain healthy relationships with your children. About Steve My dad wasn't around much when I was a teenager, but I thought that was normal. He'd come home angry from work, go to his home office, and that was it. I started to get angry. I wanted a dad who was there for me, but I wasn't the one who could make that happen. When I was 15, he had a nervous breakdown from stress at work, but it made little difference to me if he was at work, in his office, or detained for his own safety in a mental institution. Absent was absent. I realized I was on this path to manhood on my own. When I was in my 30s, I was in a toxic relationship, and I realized that something needed to change, but I just didn't have the strength or know-how to do so. I started on what was to be a long journey of self-discovery, with the help of many courses, support groups, counseling, and qualifications. Eventually, I had the strength to leave that toxic relationship. My life changed from that moment on. I met and married a wonderful woman who already had two boys, aged 4 and 9. I adopted them after their biological father drank himself to death a few years later. This was hard for them, but I was able to be there and support them. Being a son or daughter is hard, no matter what kind of parents one has. We are all shaped by our past and current circumstances. We are not trapped by them. I've spent the last 15 years developing the skills, knowledge, and experience to help men become better fathers. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theadhdads/support

A lot of things distract us every single day. It's so important to be intentional to understand how distracted we really are. Are you taking any time during your day to just sit back and reset? Samantha Jones is with us today to talk about Traction vs. Distraction. Samantha Jones began her career in dentistry at the age of 16, cultivating her skills in and passion for communication and relationship-building over three decades.  By her 20s, she transitioned into a dental practice manager role, focusing on administrative strategies to develop practices and teams. Sam co-founded Compass Dental Practice Solutions, offering support, knowledge, and strategies that contributed to her own success. Simultaneously, she served as the Chief Operations Officer for a small dental group, where she developed administrative and clinical systems now utilized in hundreds of practices across the country. This experience provided invaluable insight into the challenges dental teams face today. Specializing in helping owners transform their solo practices into thriving multi-practice entities, Sam recognized that distractions and unclear direction were often the root causes of challenges. Intrigued by the behaviors driving these issues, she obtained an Applied Neuroscience certification to gain a deeper understanding of brain functions and their influence on everyday interactions. Her company, Cre8wise Movement, is dedicated to using evidence-based brain science to facilitate insights, direction, and progress in professionals' lives and businesses. Samantha has earned a reputation as an influencer and thought leader in intentional communication, dental business operations, relationship building, team development, and empowering leaders.

Most fitness professionals think of physical health when they think about the benefits of exercise. While it's very true exercise certainly improves physical health, more and more emerging research is highlighting the role exercise plays in brain health. In fact, much of this emerging research suggests exercise is as critical for the health of the brain, as it is for the body. Given rates of cognitive decline (and associated diseases) as well as the mental health crisis facing our nation, our guest in episode 94, Ryan Glatt, feels fitness professionals are well positioned to be on the front lines of improving brain health through exercise. In this conversation we'll dive into Ryan's interesting journey from aspiring physical therapist to the Pacific Neuroscience Institute where he is the director of the FitBrain Program, focusing on exercise protocols to improve brain health with a variety of populations. What's most striking about this discussion is how quickly significant improvements in brain health can manifest themselves. This allows fitness professionals to reposition their messaging around exercise outcomes to something more immediate clients can truly feel. The brain is the most important organ in the body and this conversation will definitely open your mind (pun intended) to the many possible ways to use exercise to improve brain health.Show Notes Page: https://www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/podcast/episode/94Our Guest: Ryan Glatt, MS, CPT, NBC-HWCRyan is a personal trainer and board-certified health coach with a specialty focus in brain health with over a decade of experience in the health & fitness industry. Dealing With Divorce When You're a Highly Sensitive PersonNearly 30% of us are highly sensitive people – or HSPs – and if you count yourself in that group, it makes divorce a materially different experience. Today on the show, we welcome Chris Lyon, a relationship author and facilitator. She is a coach, board certified hypnotist, certified in Applied Neuroscience and Brain Health and she's been helping people with relationships with themselves and others in her practice for 23 years. Chris talks with us about the challenges of going through a divorce when you're an HSP.Chris explains what HSPs are and why it's valuable for everyone to understand what it means to be one. The divorce process can be particularly challenging for HSPs, who tend to internalize and look at everything through only their perspective. She says it's a process of learning to move out of internal focus and into external focus – which could help before, during, and after divorce. That external focus could be shifted even by moving the conversation out of emotional thinking and into logical thinking, ie. focusing on the math side of things for a while. This helps get them out of their fear center. Chris talks about the importance of empathy with HSPs, which can be hard to come by, particularly when rejection is distorting their view. How do you find that empathy then? It can be a challenge, but it can take the HSP out of crisis immediately. We talk a bit about the difference between sympathy and cognitive empathy, or learning to understand what your ex wants. We also talk about why being defensive is the weakest position, and why therapy can be an incredibly valuable tool to help get through this difficult time. It's a wide-ranging conversation full of great information for everyone – not just HSPs. “Brands really matter, when and only when they matter to consumers. And this is fundamentally a question of human connection.” ~ Matt Johnson To get under the skin of how branding works, what makes it effective and how to build a successful brand, we talk with Matt Johnson PhD, who is an expert on the human side of business. Matt is a speaker, researcher, and writer specializing in the application of psychology and neuroscience to marketing. We discuss everything from the difference of brand strategy, brand personality and brand meaning, all the way to how brands can get involved in activism. “What determines if you're a great brand is if your values and your attributes and your characteristics resonate with your target market.” ~ Matt Johnson Our conversation doesn't just appeal to marketers, however. In our usual lighthearted style, Kurt and Tim touch on Matt's love of Arsenal, his appreciation for pumpkin spice lattes, and the music that helps him come up with creative ideas.  As a former guest on Behavioral Grooves, we are delighted to welcome Matt back to discuss branding and marketing. Matt's recent book, “Branding that Means Business: How to Build Enduring Bonds between Brands, Consumers and Markets” which is co-written with Tessa Misiaszek, provides a really informative overview of the application of marketing in organizations. Live. Learn. Gather. Teach. Repeat. At the age of 23, Anne Berube's life was interrupted by a near fatal car accident and a mystical experience. Trapped in the car, unable to breathe, she had a vision that forever realigned her life's trajectory. Even after this dramatic experience, there was still much work to be done. Subsequent years were marked by chronic pain, emotional distress, and malaise. Her journey of introspection and personal transformation would lead to profound insights around self-healing, happiness, and inner peace. Now living her purpose every day, Anne is a powerful teacher with an uncommon ability to share her story and insights in a way that awakens the inner wisdom in others. Her accident ignited a passion for sharing her experience and knowledge, and she has made it her life's purpose to help individuals remember the happiness within them. A lifelong seeker of wisdom, her hunger for learning has led her to achieve much formal education including a Bachelor of Education (Leadership Focus), a Master of Arts (Literature) from Queens University, and a PhD in Comparative French and Francophone Literatures from the Université Bordeaux 3 in France. In addition to her formal education, Anne has studied Vedic wisdom with Dr David Simon and Deepak Chopra at the Chopra Centre in Carlsbad, California; was initiated into Huna by Hawaiian Kahuna Laura Kealoha Yardley; received certification from Louise LeBrun as a certified WEL-Systems Institute facilitator; and completed a course in NeuroPsychoidiology Life Coaching under Dr. Amanda Wintink at the Centre for Applied Neuroscience. In 2007, driven to share her experience with others, Anne founded Autopoetic Ideas: a social enterprise that supports healing and transformation by gathering people to share inspiring content through live experiences. Projects range in scope from intimate workshops and coaching programs to community gatherings to massive events and conferences. Through her own workshops called The Happy Sessions, she has refined the process of Be Feel Think Do and has helped hundreds of individuals discover an inner freedom and a connection to their own unique source of sustainable happiness. Her work has also allowed her to share the stage with many of her heroes, including bestselling authors Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Julie Daniluk, James Van Praagh, Anita Moorjani, Gabrielle Bernstein, Dr. William Davis, and Gregg Braden
