It’s Our Money with Ellen Brown – It’s About Control Mayer Rothschild is famously quoted as saying “Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws!” – and so it is. When we look at the distribution of capital, we see that those who control the franchise of creating money through loans and debt rule our world. Ellen speaks with one of the planet’s oldest serving statesmen, Canada’s Paul Hellyer, about the nature of this controlling franchise and about the alternatives still available. Walt McRee speaks with Lisa Cody, a researcher for the Service Employees International Union, who did a landmark study of the outrageous costs Los Angeles has paid private financiers as part of our ongoing series What Wall Street Costs America, and Matt Stannard comments on the increasingly popular idea of providing a basic income to people as one way of balancing the scales against the controlling interests.
It’s Our Money with Ellen Brown – The Little Bank that Does – Part 2 We continue our conversation with the preeminent historian of the Bank of North Dakota, Dr. Rozanne Enerson Junker, about the founding factors and functional dimensions of America’s only state-owned public bank. Ellen discusses block-chain technology with co-host Walt McRee while this week’s What Wall Street Costs America examines the impact of predatory banking costs on the city of Detroit -- Matt Stannard talks with Tom Stevens of “Detroiters Resisting Emergency Management.”
It’s Our Money with Ellen Brown – Pursuing Populist Politics Almost 100 years ago, populist politics marched across America in reaction to the same sort of monetary monopoly that is depriving this century’s citizens of their hard-earned assets and wealth. That deprivation has mobilized an angry, fed-up backlash of folks willing to support any candidate who will talk straight and promise real change. Several candidates are rising to the challenge. Ellen talks with Tim Canova, a law professor and Fed expert facing off against Congressional Democratic insider Debbie Wasserman-Schultz in South Florida – out West, a State House Representative candidate Pamela Powers-Hannley runs on a platform calling for a public bank to stave off the deteriorating state economy and using inspiration from 100-years ago; and Matt Stannard talks with the award-winning author David Dayen whose new book Chain of Title reveals how a few plucky citizens pushed back against the Goliath of Wall Street mortgage fraud.
Kiss your cash goodbye! The word is that things would be more convenient, crooks would be confounded and diseases might be thwarted if we’d just get rid of filthy currency as the most essential form of personal financial liquidity. Currently circulating in the corridors of world financial powers, it may appear as an enlightened technical step forward to eliminate cash, but is it also a stalking horse for yet another way global bank interests can separate you from your assets? Ellen speaks with renown author and media figure Stephen Lendmen about why this idea is appearing now and what’s happening behind the scenes that’s moving it forward. Also behind the scenes is a huge and stark reality about municipal debt to Wall Street that the Public Banking Institute is targeting in its new project called What Wall Street Costs America. Co-host Walt McRee speaks with PBI’s Matt Stannard on this groundbreaking campaign.
When legislators here and abroad gave power to private bank interests to supply the money for their national economies, it was a thickly-veiled ruse that set the stage for complete debt subjection of all public interests. Our notional national debt levels are the proof. So it is with great interest that we delve back into a continuing legal struggle over the Bank of Canada’s chartered responsibilities for interest-free public investment. We remind you of some simple truths from 12-year old Victoria Grant about the Bank of Canada and Ellen’s guest, Dr. J. Ryan Collins, discusses the policy that foisted a change on B of C’s virtuous history. And as a legal maven himself, Matt Stannard reviews the benefits that reside even in failed legal challenges of this sort.
Ma’ikwe Ludwig is the Executive Director of Dancing Rabbit Eco Village in Northern Missouri and also sits on the Board of the Directors for the Fellowship for Intentional Community. With a long history of being involved in this work she is well-known for candidly discussing the blessings and challenges of living in an intentional community. Just a few of my favorite takeaways from this episode: “Do you really give a shit about other people enough to be having it determine your decision making?” Tweet This: “There is a lot of choice here about how exactly you embody sustainability.” “We need to actually have a culture that supports people in living their values rather than having their values as something that is an afterthought in their lives. or that is the secondary thing. It really needs to become the primary thing. Living in a community like Dancing Rabbit allows you to do that.” A New Concept: Materialized empathy Life changing advice: Always follow your intuition, your life could depend on it. Note: The first about 30 seconds or so are off balance. There was a problem with the hookup into my computer, so the vocal audio is very low in the introduction. This week was a very special edition of Cognitive Dissonance called "Cognitive Dissonance Celebrates Equality!" Why? Because the Platte County School District #1 tore down the Anti-Defamation League's "No Place for Hate" campaign banners at Wheatland's high school and West Elementary school after five parents (supposedly) complained because the Gay and Lesbian Fund of Colorado was one sponsor of this campaign. The banners hung for nearly a year before anyone was "offended."The school board's ultimate vote was 4-3 in favor of tearing the banners down. Many students and community members are outraged and are insisting the banners be hung again. Check out the Wheaterville website for more info, to sign a petition to put the banners back up, and how to contact the school board. We took public comment all night from Laramie community members, as well as from some brave souls who ventured from Wheatland. School board members will all be receiving CDs of this broadcast very soon.Technical note: I had wanted to mention Wheatland HS grad Jeremy Bredeson's excellent website and post, "Gay Like Me" on my show, but I simply forgot to write it in the show log. As such, I forgot. So I still want to give him a shout-out here: Give Mama Some SugarCheck out the site and the post - all of it is excellent reading. As for the rest of the show, Angry Malcontent reminded Obama the Lucy never let Charlie Brown kick the football and the fundits broke character to each speak as themselves on this issue. Yes, kids, here's the big reveal: The fundits aren't real people, they're caricatures of pundits. Whoa. D-bag o' the Week saw local and national d-bags getting called out with an assist from Matt Stannard. You can catch Matt on KOCA with "Sunday School" from 2-4 p.m. as he plays unsigned bands, b-sides and rarities and throws in a dash of political commentary for that perfect blend of spices.Track Listing:"Moral Threat" - Social Distortion "God And Country" - Thermals "New York City Cops" - The Strokes "Out Here in the Middle" - James McMurtry "Every State Line" - Ani DiFranco "God's Children" - The Gutter Twins"American Girl" - Tom Petty "Wasted Time" - Kings of Leon "Never Gonna Change" - Drive-By Truckers "Laramie" - Amy Ray "Mama's Got a Girlfriend Now" - Ben Harper "The Frown Song" - Ben Folds "The Times They Are a Changin'" - Asexuals "Underdogs" - Manic Street Preachers "Mutes in the Steeple" - Archers Of Loaf "Shepherds of the Nation" - The Kinks "Laugh,Love,Fuck" - The Coup "Lonely People" - Talib Kweli (Feat. I filled in for new KOCA addition Matt Stannard of Shared Sacrifice on Sunday. Matt recently began hosting the show "Sunday School" but due to his alter-ego's responsibilities, he was forced to be in Texas this weekend. His show features progressive commentary and his own unique blend of music - think the similar politics of Cognitive Dissonance, but with a problem-solving twist. No worries. I played some political folk and some indie rock, and appealed to the good people in radioland to donate to the unfortunate souls in Haiti who have recently lost everything. I also talked about making phone calls for Democrat Martha Coakley in Massachusetts. She's the number sixty vote on health care reform, unless Scott Brown, a moderate-turned-teabagger, happens to swoop in and capture the seat.
