Send us a textFacing license exam anxiety? You're far from alone. Today, we're diving deep into how Gestalt therapy offers powerful tools for navigating overwhelming test anxiety, using the story of Rachel – a first-generation college student whose pre-existing anxiety disorder intensifies as her licensure exam approaches.Gestalt therapy stands apart from other approaches by anchoring clients firmly in the present moment. Rather than analyzing past experiences or catastrophizing future outcomes, we explore what's happening right now in the body, mind, and emotions. For clients like Rachel, this means turning toward physical sensations of anxiety – trembling hands, racing thoughts, upset stomach – rather than running from them. Through techniques like exaggeration (intentionally amplifying physical responses) and staying with uncomfortable feelings, clients begin building tolerance and awareness that transforms their relationship with anxiety.Language matters enormously in the Gestalt approach. When Rachel says "I should study more" or "I have to pass," she's using disempowering language that removes her sense of choice. By shifting to "I choose to study more," she reclaims agency and responsibility. Similarly, the famous empty chair technique gives voice to unspoken feelings – allowing Rachel to address family expectations or dialogue with different parts of herself, like her inner critic. For your exam prep, remember the contact boundary disturbances with the mnemonic "I pray daily for relief from class" – Introjection, Projection, Retroflexion, Deflection, and Confluence. These patterns explain how clients interrupt natural contact between themselves and their environment, blocking authentic experience.Whether you're preparing for your own licensure exam or working with anxious clients, Gestalt offers a pathway from environmental support to self-support, from avoidance to awareness, and from "shoulds" to choices. The beauty of this approach lies in its authenticity requirement – not just from clients but from therapists too. Ready to transform your understanding of anxiety and therapeutic presence? Listen now and discover why being real might be the most powerful technique of all.If you need to study for your national licensing exam, try the free samplers at: LicensureExamsThis podcast is not associated with the NBCC, AMFTRB, ASW, ANCC, NASP, NAADAC, CCMC, NCPG, CRCC, or any state or governmental agency responsible for licensure.
This Episodes Questions: Brians Questions When making trivets, how to cut the grooves - when I cut mine I hogged out half the thickness of the wood in one pass. That led to some pretty rough cuts and gouges (i.e. scrap). I assume the answer is a router table with a lift, but of course I don't have one YET. :) Also, what finish to put on a trivet (which is used for hot pans)? - different finish than a cutting board? Tung oil? Danish oil? I assume 'not' ArmRSeal. Mark I'm preparing to build a set of kitchen cupboards from white oak. The style will be Mission, with some Frank Lloyd Wright Prairies Style touches. I have several questions. I have a SuperMax style cantilever 25-50 drum sander. Do you think that this is a feasible tool to level out the boards to remove the planer snipe? …and avoid having to cut 3” of the end of each piece? Darrin Guys Questions: Been enjoying your podcast through several projects. My background is homebuilding, but through my sawmill hobby and unwillingness to pay for overpriced garbage…I have found myself learning about woodworking. My question is about making doors. I have made one door so far using only groove cuts into the stiles's and gluing the tenons of the rails and panels into these cuts. I don't have much faith in the longevity of this door, but it's been a year now. What is the traditional methodology for attaching the individual parts of a simple 3 panel door Should I just buy a domino and get it done… Also per your latest podcast episode, what is the best way to midi gate the wood movement at the joint of the rails/ stiles. As these joints are not small nor parallel. Sorry for the low brow question. Appreciate the knowledge. Lucas Hello esteemed woodworking gentlemen! Thanks for the amazing podcast and the contribution to the woodworking community. I'm seeking some general advice and hope you can help. I was recently watched a YouTube video where someone stated that a track saw blade should always be buried for the straightest possible cut. That made me wonder if I can be causing unnecessary blade deflection on my jobsite table saw and Dewalt miter saw. I often struggle achieving perfect 90 on those machines when crosscutting. As a hobbyist with limited shop time, setting up machines is pain but I understand its necessity. Can you speak on this blade deflection and are there any go to tricks that you have for ensuring your machines are set up properly? Thanks for any help you can provide.-Jose Huys Questions: A while back my wife and I bought and moved into a house with no dishwasher, then later purchased one after realizing how much not having one sucked. We made the mistake of assuming that we would be fine putting the dishwasher at the end of the counter, because we figured the top of the machine would look like a run-of-the-mill home appliance like a washer or dryer, rather than the monstrosity that it actually is. It is ugly. I think I actually recall my wife crying when she saw it, and not in a good way. Since then my loosely held plan has been finding a way to move or dispose of the contents of one section of our cabinets, then cut a section out of said cabinets big enough for the dishwasher to fit underneath. Recently, however, thanks in large part to your podcast, I have developed enough confidence in my woodworking skills to attempt a different idea. My thought is to make what is essentially an end cap or sidewall, which will match the existing cabinetry, anchor it somehow, and then place a new section of countertop between this end cap and the existing end cap of the cabinets. I would essentially be "extending" the countertop, thereby concealing top and visible side of the dishwasher. From what I can tell, all I would have to make, stain, and finish would be a cabinet side panel, a piece of trim to run along the bottom, and a partial face frame. So here come the questions: do you think this is doable, either generally or the way I am thinking? And what would be the easiest way to tackle this project? Note that I'm not particularly concerned over whether or not I use the same method of instruction as was used for the rest of the cabinetry. For example, I don't particularly care to use particle board with a veneer as the rest of the cabinets may have done if it would actually be easier or cheaper in this instance to just make the side panel out of a solid piece of wood. So long as it looks close, its fine with me. The applicable tools I can think of that I have at my disposal are a table saw with a crosscut sled, a compound miter saw, a jigsaw, fixed base router, various types of Sanders, a pocket hole jig, 15, 16, and 23 gauge nailers, and of course all of the basic hand tools. I would describe my skill level as approaching novice. Sincerely,Z achary T Owens Howdy yall, I'm wondering if you can recommend any smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors in the woodshop? I work out of a one car garage in Minnesota so have a gas heater to help me stay warm during our bitter winter months, but am also worried about oil rags possibly spontaneously combusting. When I first moved into the shop I tried installing a regular smoke detector however it kept on getting set off when I had excessive dust flying (thank you router). Is there anything that you know of on the market that won't get set off by dust but that I can keep my home protected and have a little more peace of mind? Thanks, Paul at Twin Lake Woodshop

In part two of Crystal McCrory Jones' story, her siblings, Jana and Dane, and her sister-in-law Julie meet with the sheriff for a conversation that raises even more questions than it answers. As they lay out inconsistencies and evidence that doesn't sit right, the sheriff listens but also dismisses, deflects, and downplays. He openly calls Crystal's husband a chronic liar, yet seems unwilling to consider that those lies might actually extend to the most important truth of all. Earlier this year, Oregon lawmakers passed a bill to implement new criminal penalties for drug possession and end the state’s three-year experiment with drug decriminalization. The legislation also allows law enforcement in counties that have opted into the program to deflect drug users away from the criminal justice system and into treatment as a way to avoid charges. In Multnomah County, 127 deflections have been initiated since the program started in September. Portland Police Commander Brian Hughes and Heather Mirasol, Director of the Behavioral Health Division for Multnomah County, join us to talk about what the deflection program looks like so far.

Imagine that scene from every apocalyptic asteroid movie—you know the one. The scientist comes rushing in because a "new" asteroid has been detected and is on a collision course with Earth. What happens next? The answer depends on several factors: how big is the asteroid, what is it made of, and how soon is the impact? (That's simplified but roll with it.) NASA's DART mission showed that an impactor can change the orbit of an asteroid, but that tested the hypothesis on the tiny moon of a small asteroid. What if the asteroid is much larger? Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico may have an answer -- a controlled nuclear blast that deflects (rather than destroys) the asteroid. Join planetary scientist Beth Johnson and lead author Nathan Moore for an exciting—and probably terrifying—conversation about how to keep our advanced civilization alive. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we will be navigating feelings as we try to find a balance between empathy and self-reflection. How are you feeling? How do those feelings impact another person's feelings? Can you feel what another person is feeling? Are you as confused as I am by this line of questioning? Well, today, we're diving into the world of feelings—yes, that deep, squishy part of being human! We live in a culture that champions the importance of respecting feelings, which is awesome…but sometimes we can get so wrapped up in our feelings that we forget to take a peek at the other side of the coin. What happens when we're hyper-focused on our own emotions? Could we be missing out on understanding someone else's? Let's explore the fine art of balancing self-reflection with empathy, of making room for our own feelings and those of the people around us. It's all about connecting, growing, and creating more ‘aha' moments in our relationships—with a little bit of humor, honesty, and a lot of heart along the way! When I was growing up, the question, ‘How do you feel?' had a whole different vibe. It was usually about the basics—are you hot, cold, tired, or maybe just a little hungry? When it came to health, the answer was usually straightforward: sick or not. If you were really under the weather, maybe you'd get a day at home or a trip to the nurse's office. Simple. But today, that question has become a lot more nuanced. Now, asking ‘How do you feel?' can open up a world of responses, as unique and layered as each person who answers it. Don't get me wrong, a focus on exploring more about feelings has helped normalize mental health discussions, reduced stigma, and empowered people to speak openly about their struggles. It has illuminated the need for self-awareness, stress management, and setting boundaries. However, focusing too much on personal feelings can sometimes limit our ability to connect empathetically with others. It can even contribute to misunderstandings in relationships if one person is more focused on expressing their own feelings versus listening to understand someone else's emotional struggles. Ever heard of emotional myopia – when we see only our own emotional perspective and may inadvertently neglect the feelings of others? Martha Beck starts this discussion with Seeing Your Emotional Blind Spots found on her blog At Everyday Speach I found an angle we need to cover; Understanding Others: The Importance of Perspective-Taking At the Worry Games, Lisa Branson shares another perspective on Why You Should Stop Focusing on Your Feelings On TEDx Talks I found some wise information on Validation, and communication through Empathy by Naomi Feil Recognizing when someone is playing on our emotions to push their own agenda can be tricky, but there are a few red flags that can help us stay aware: Intense Emotional Appeal If someone is leaning heavily into emotions—guilt, pity, anger, or fear—without much substance or reason behind it, it's a sign they might be trying to sway you emotionally rather than engaging in a balanced conversation. Notice if they're frequently amplifying emotional language or using words designed to make you feel extreme sympathy or urgency. Lack of Listening and Empathy People pushing an agenda will often avoid giving space to your feelings, opinions, or questions. If they dominate the conversation, rarely let you speak, or dismiss your perspective when you do, it's a red flag. Genuine conversations include active listening; if it feels one-sided, trust that instinct. Deflection and Manipulation of Responsibility When you try to express your own emotions or viewpoints, do they quickly shift the topic back to their own concerns or play down your feelings? Manipulators often turn things around to make you feel responsible for their emotions, a tactic to keep the focus on themselves and their goals. Inconsistent Narratives or Exaggerations Listen for inconsistencies or exaggerated claims that don't add up. Manipulators may bend the truth or overemphasize details to paint themselves in a certain light or to steer you toward a specific reaction. If something seems “off” or overly dramatic, trust your gut. Pressure to Make Quick Decisions People pushing an agenda often create a sense of urgency, pressuring you to act or decide quickly. They know that when we're rushed, we're less likely to question or analyze their motives. Pausing and asking for time to think it over is often the best way to get clarity. Using Past Events as Emotional Leverage Manipulators might bring up past events or your own vulnerabilities to make you feel indebted to them or guilty. They might even use their past generosity or sacrifices as leverage, nudging you to go along with their wishes. This type of guilt-tripping is a clear sign they're trying to steer your emotions to benefit their narrative. Trust Your Gut Sometimes, the simplest way to recognize manipulation is by trusting your own feelings. If you feel drained, confused, or somehow “off” after talking with them, this might be your intuition signaling that their intentions aren't fully in your best interest. By keeping an eye out for these signs, you can protect your emotional space and engage with people on your own terms, setting boundaries and staying true to your values. CHALLENGE: Look beyond your own feelings and consider the bigger picture—what are others experiencing, and how can you make space for that? By balancing self-reflection with empathy, you can create deeper, more meaningful connections that benefit everyone involved. I Know YOU Can Do It!

Pastor David MorrisonMatthew 7:1-6 (NLT)- Judgment is a problem...in fact, as we look at what Jesus is saying here, Christians should be among the least judgmental in the world, and yet the opposite often occurs.Matthew 7:1-2 (NLT)- This could have been Jesus joking around, but He somehow gets the point across. And He calls them hypocrites. While words and actions not lining up is certainly part of it, it is possible for our words and actions to line up…and yet the intentions are off! Intentions of the heart matter to God. What motivates our judgement?I have found that judgment is often Deflection and/or Projection. My judgment is a mirror of myself. Unrighteous judgment ISOLATES people, DEHUMANIZES people, INFLATES our SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS. We call this condemnation. This whole passage about judgment is about how our actions often tear people down and don't lead to the right relationships! God cares that we are in right relationship with one another.Matthew 7:5 (NLT)- Before I judge someone and pretend to know their story and intention, have I done the hard work of examining my own soul?Matthew 7:2b (NLT)Galatians 6:1 (NLT)- How you correct someone matters! Do it gently.- Why you correct them a matters! Restore that person.- It matters who corrects. Someone Spirit lead.We need to use discernment to see things as God does. I can discern where someone is headed and work to restore them.Matthew 7:6 (NLT)- In the life of a believer, judgment is only reserved in rare circumstances for one believer to another.1 Corinthians 4:3-5 (NIV)- If possible, don't judge. God alone is the judge. Work hard to restore relationships and love people even when they make mistakes.2 Corinthians 5:10 (NLT)- This Upside-Down Kingdom of God is one of mercy and grace. God is the only one who can fully determine how our actions, words, thoughts, and intentions impact how we live our lives! One of the greatest miracles in the Kingdom of God happens when people expect to find judgment and condemnation, and instead find love and compassion.Repentance stokes the flame of a move of God. There is no condemnation for you today. Turn to Jesus.
TAKEAWAYSWe should always turn to God first when we have problems we are facing or needing to addressWhat's coming out of our heart says a lot about who we really areGuard your heart not just from the influences of the world, but guard what is coming out of your heart, as wellDraw near to Jesus as your hope and help in time of need and through thanksgiving and prayer
