Confidence, they say, is a preference for the habitual voyeur of what is known as……1994, darlings! And of course, as perceived wisdom now dutifully dictates, we were all completely mad for it, lemon hooch in hand, union jacks draped around our football tops, waving two fingers to those damn yanks. Go home!Except, of course, the truth couldn't be further away from the, er truth. Whilst it definitely maybe was 1994, there was so much more than just cigarettes (and alcohol). And we were all the better for it, pop kids! Our favourite compilation series was not only celebrating nearly turning 30, it was also sporting a new slimline 2CD cover - swanky, and soooo nineties! Goodbye fat boxes, this decade of NOW was neater, fitter and certainly in full swing. So, what could you expect from this sparkly, starshaped selection of 38 Top Chart Hits?Pure, glistening pop from the likes of Michelle Gayle and Sophie B Hawkins!Boyband phoar-dom (is this a word?) from the top flight teams of FC Take That and East 17 United!Swoonsome songstress Lia Loeb positively not missing the knocks of Ethan Hawke (reality will bite)! And huge slices of europop at every provincial nightclub turn! Another Saturday (rhythm of the) Night folks! Mine's a Pernod and blackcurrant and chip butty! And of course we had a selection of those most poppy sounds of the Brit persuasion, courtesy of blur (no capital!) and Oasis. Swagger, confidence and NOW on the money as always. All of this and much, much more awaits - including SPARKS! Yes, actual Russell and Ron Mael on a NOW album!Join Anna Doble - broadcaster, journalist and author of ‘Connection is a Song: Coming Up and Coming Out Through the Music of the 90s' - as we head down some fascinating rabbit holes and unearth not just a year of memories, but a whole decade of emotional and personal stories, interwoven by the power of music. And as always, NOW serves as the perfect snapshot of pop bringing it all back home.AND we pose some of 1994 biggest questions:When did Britpop actually begin?Which band followed Anna around Leeds on a bus? (well, not actually)Is 2wo Third3 the first ever case sensitive password? Are Shampoo the centre of the pop universe?Ultimate KAOS - why?Join us for NOW29 - it's SO GOOD and INCREDIBLE! It's already episode 5 and this time around the theme is confidence as every single performer here presents their song with complete confidence. A lot of them are achingly cool too but not all of them (!) so we just stuck with confidence in the end. Obvious highlights include the catchy 1985 winner, the seminal Calm After the Storm that charted all over the world, and the last UK song to place second in the contest before Sam Ryder restored us to glory this year. We also have the nicest Swede you could possibly meet, Frans Jeppsson Wall, who represented his country in 2016, while the Randomiser is a messy bitch choosing Irish crooner Dickie Rock which leads Andy to share a terrifying anecdote about Dickie's female fans back in the day. Most importantly though, the Deuce Award once again seeks to right a wrong by celebrating the fantastic performance of Michelle Gayle who absolutely should have represented the UK in 2008 with Woo (U Make Me). If anyone has a studio recording of this classic we'd like to hear from you. Even as the coronavirus threat begins to recede in the face of widespread vaccinations, a large percentage of North Florida residents remain food insecure. That need has spawned powerful partnerships to address that and other challenges facing these residents. To talk about it are: Monique Van Pelt, executive director Second Harvest of the Big Bend; Dr. Michelle Gayle, assistant superintendent Leon County Schools; the school district's chief of nutritional services, James Howcroft; and Kerri Anderson, principal of W.T. Moore Elementary School.
Michelle Gayle is one of the UK's quiet legends. With a career spanning Music, Screen, Stage, and Literature this multi-talented creative has been in the business for 5 decades. She then became a published author in 2010, writing for adults and young children. And now Michelle's turned her hand again to screenwriting contributing her talents to writing episode 9 of the second series of the popular historical fantasy A Discovery of Witches on Sky. This is a hun-tastic cultural exchange like no other as London native Joel takes his Aussie co-host David through the UK's most iconic soap stars turned pop stars in the 1990s and 2000s from Eastenders, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, and Brookside. The Right Back At Ya! boys pay homage to Martine McCutcheon, a British national treasure and beloved "Love Actually" star who rose to fame through Eastenders before launching a pop career in 1999 with her UK #1 hit 'Perfect Moment' - her first of five consecutive UK Top 10 solo singles. The multi-talented star served major bops like 'I'm Over You' and her Donna Summer cover of 'On The Radio' in her second album era "Wishing" in 2000 before breaking into musical theatre. Michelle Gayle is undoubtedly one of Britain's most credible and crucial soap-turned-music stars. Joel and David celebrate her impact and discography from the signature 90s hit 'Sweetness' through to her 7 UK Top 30 singles including 'Freedom', 'Happy Just To Be With You', and 'Do You Know', and her two studio albums. This special would not be complete without a major shout-out to Adam Rickitt's hi-NRG Eurodance album "Good Times", which spawned the iconic UK #5 hit 'I Breathe Again', and also Jennifer Ellison's dead rocky Top 20 singles 'Baby I Don't Care' and 'Bye Bye Boy'. There are also nods to the fabulous pop releases by Will Mellor, Claire Sweeney, Matthew Marsden, Sean Maguire, Tracy Shaw, Sid Owen, and Leticia Dean! Known for celebrating the best of 2000s pop music, the Right Back At Ya! boys are really stepping out of their zone in this fun-filled, two-hour special that taste tests everything from 90s Eurodance to R&B, rock to disco-pop and power ballads... and even musical numbers. Unwind from the dramas of 2020 with Right Back At Ya's recap of our UK soap stars' most vibrant tunes! She's a successful actor, singer, and author but as a black woman feels she has to be twice as good as everyone else to get ahead.
This is an in-depth look at identity. Do people see themselves as British, Black, Black British, Caribbean, African, all of the above, or none of the above? Presented by Richie Brave, this episode is the first in a six-part series of discussions which look at the black experience in the UK. This episode focuses on how black people are viewed and represent to each other and how we are accepted by other races. It also looks at the importance of heritage as part of how you are viewed, and looks at the notion of “privilege”, particularly based on colourism and light vs dark skinned opportunities. There is also a key conversation regarding the impact of the history of a race in a location, and how that affects the present day. Guests include Professor Robert Beckford, photographer Ronan McKenzie, social worker Maleeka Roby, writer Rianna Jade Parker, and actress and writer Michelle Gayle.

In this episode I got to meet up with 90s RnB pop goddess Michelle Gayle. But as you can see from the photo below myself and Michelle Gayle are old friends. I won a competition to meet her back in the mid-ninties and because I was under eighteen I had to bring my Dad. Michelle was a struggling singer who became an actress and then a very successful singer. Sh appeared in Eastenders and in the space of three years released two albums and a string of top 20 singles. She was nominated for three Brit awards and then mid-way through promoting her second record which was stared off more successful than the first, she disappeared. There were rumours of her changing record labels. But fans never knew what happened until now. She went on to star in Beauty and The Beast on the Westend becoming the first black woman to play a disney princess in the UK. After that she took part in the reality series “Reborn In The USA” where she competed with fellow ex-popstars in the US for a new record contract. The series ended up being a lot more then what they had signed up to and despite the very bizarre circumstances Michelle ended up in the final. Michelle has written three novels and is currently touring in “Son Of A Preacher Man”. She will be performing in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre with the show from 22nd to 26th May.
