Should the UK veto Eurovison?

Britain lost Eurovision again, which now happens with such regularity it practically counts as a national tradition. In this episode of Mark and Pete, we ask the increasingly uncomfortable question: should the UK still bother entering the Eurovision Song Contest at all? From political voting blocs and changing European culture to glitter cannons, novelty acts, and the strange annual ritual of British viewers pretending not to care while caring enormously, this episode explores why Eurovision still fascinates millions despite constant complaints about it.Mark and Pete discuss Britain's complicated relationship with Europe, whether Eurovision is still genuinely about music, and why modern entertainment increasingly feels less like artistry and more like a giant televised identity performance. There's also discussion of ABBA, Sam Ryder, “nul points,” Eurovision's gigantic viewing figures, and whether the contest reveals something deeper about post-Christian Western culture and the desperate modern need to be seen, validated, and applauded by strangers in sequins.A funny, thoughtful, and quietly sardonic Christian take on Eurovision, modern celebrity culture, Britain's cultural identity crisis, and why every year we somehow convince ourselves that this time might be different.

It's just Dawn and Matt this week who review four shows available this week. On Apple TV, there's Margo's Got Money Troubles, with another strong lead performance from the always brilliant Elle Fanning. The series tells the story of a college student who finds herself pregnant and forced to look for a new way to keep herself afloat. Add in great performances from Michelle Pfeiffer and Nick Offerman as her parents, and really likeable characters, this show is really surprising. Next is Big Mistakes, a new comedy thriller from Dan Levy of Schitt's Creek fame. It's a show with interesting characters and great comedic performance from the always dependable Laurie Metcalfe, but it gets bogged down in a silly crime plot.  Next, back from the early noughties, Frankie Muniz and the whole cast (minus one recast) returns for a four-part series, Malcolm in the Middle: Life's still unfair. It's strange for this show in particular to return, but its hard to pin down why it exists. Finally, Channel 4 returns to 'The Piano-verse' for a new singing show, Your Song. Hosted by Alison Hammond (because, of course), the show sees ordinary members of the public who take to the stage (this time in Liverpool) and perform a song that means something to them. Judged by Paloma Faith and Sam Ryder. The show is another example of Channel 4 trying desperately to find a hit. This one lacks the sincere nature of The Piano but forms an interesting discussion between Matt and Dawn.

It is an honor and a privilege to welcome music producer and songwriter Toby Gad to the first Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast Holiday Special!  Toby began his career in the late 1980s, when he and his brother Jens had three of their songs featured on controversial music duo Milli Vanilli's European debut and multi-platinum album, All or Nothing. Because of the songs' success, Milli Vanilli's producer Frank Farian produced the brothers' 1990 debut album, NRG. That same year, Toby met Jacqueline Nemorin, and a 10-year collaboration began with 1992's Creole Dance and continued with 1995's Mission of Love and the title song for Neverending Story III.  Following success in Germany, Toby left for the United States. He opened Strawberrybee studio in Midtown Manhattan and co-wrote “Unspoken” with Madeline Stone and O. Hatch for Christian platinum artist Jaci Velasquez. The song stayed on the Christian Billboard Top 20 Singles chart for half a year.  In 2003, Toby produced and co-wrote “A Toast to Men” for Willa Ford, and two years later, developed, produced, and co-wrote Kaci Brown's Interscope Records debut, Instigator. He also produced and co-wrote songs for Ricky Martin and the Veronicas.  In 2008, his career shifted into high gear after Fergie released a song they co-wrote, “Big Girls Don't Cry.” The song went 4x platinum and peaked at the number one position on the US Billboard Hot 100. He also co-wrote and co-produced Beyoncé's “If I Were A Boy,” which went 2x platinum and peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. He continued to write massive hits for Calum Scott (“No Matter What”), Demi Lovato (“Skyscraper”), Jessie J (“Who You Are”), Josh Groban (“River”), Leona Lewis (“Fire Under My Feet'), and Madonna (“Bitch, I'm Madonna” and “Living for Love”).  One of his massive hits was John Legend's “All of Me,” which earned RIAA's 13x Diamond (Highest Certified RIAA Single in History) and won Grammy, Soul Train, and NAACP Awards.  Recently, Toby Gad released his first holiday studio album, Piano Diaries Christmas. The album features original songs co-written with an all-star group of recording artists. Anthony Gargiula, Gavin James, Huntley, Joelle James, Jordin Sparks, Loren Allred, Marisha Wallace, Sam Ryder, and Victoria Justice are some of the talented vocalists who are featured on the record.    When he is not in the recording studio, Toby is also the host of the Songs You Know Podcast. In each episode, Toby and his guests uncover the tales, creative processes, and moments of magic that brought iconic songs you know and love to life. Previous guests include Billy Steinberg, Jessie J, Josh Groban, Justin Tranter, Lindy Robbins, Loren Allred, and Marisha Wallace.  On the 2025 holiday special, Toby Gad talked about his songwriting sessions with Beyonce and Demi Lovato, writing “All of Me” with John Legend, the moment he swore at the Queen of Pop, and previewed Piano Diaries Christmas. Breaking Walls

At 10AM CBS resumed programming with their mid-morning soap operas. First up was Valiant Lady, starring Joan Blaine. Joan was a valiant lady because she sacrificed a promising Broadway career for her father's sake, then married a “brilliant but unstable" surgeon. People like the just-heard Mandel Kramer loved working on soap operas from New York. At 10:15AM Light of the World signed on starring Bret Morrison as “the Speaker.” The show was a soap opera version of the stories of the bible and featured some of New York's best talent like Mandel Kramer, Louise Fitch, and Alexander Scourby. This D-Day broadcast was the very first episode of Light of the World on CBS. It had been running on NBC since March of 1940. It would run on CBS until August of 1946 before once again being picked up by NBC until June 2nd, 1950. When Light of the World signed off, The Open Door signed on at 10:30. Created by Sandra Michael, The Open Door was a purposely slow-moving, character building show built around Dean Eric Hansen of the fictional Vernon University. The stories involved people in his life: their problems, lives, and loves. The star, Dr. Alfred Dorf had known Sandra Michael since her childhood in Denmark. He'd come to America to establish a church in Brooklyn and was the true inspiration behind the character. Unfortunately, the agency handling the sponsor's account didn't like the direction of the series. They pressured Sandra Michael into changing the show, but she resisted and the show was canceled after June 30th, 1944. Once The Open Door signed off, Bachelor's Children signed on at 10:45. It featured Hugh Studebaker as Dr. Bob Graham, a bachelor who took in his dying friend's 18-year-old twin daughters. Marjorie Hannan played Ruth Ann, the kind, thoughtful twin, and Patricia Dunlap played Janet, the fiery and impulsive twin. Olan Soule played Sam Ryder. He was, perhaps, best known for co-starring with Barbara Luddy on The First Nighter.
