Salt-N-Pepa, Usher, Prince, Diana Ross, Teena Marie, Chaka Khan, An industry veteran who currently serves as one of the directors for the Hip Hop Museum, Green outlines his career spanning five decades. This includes producing concerts and/or representing as a longtime agent for artists such as Usher, Prince, Diana Ross, Teena Marie, Chaka Khan, the Backstreet Boys - among othersThen there's the fine line between the grind in the streets and the hustle in the industry.  Mark battled with con artists, drug dealers and pimps and people trying to show off their local high profile at the expense of his artists. “I didn't get too caught up in that because I had to keep one eye on the money!” He stayed focused, even when distractions of every kind showed up on the road–drugs, groupies, out-of-control artists–and he kept many ships afloat when everything should have drowned.  But again, the show must go on. Mark's stellar reputation put him in high demand and working with Melba and soon Freddie Jackson, Dru Hill, Al B Sure, Grandmaster Flash, a young Usher and music pioneer Prince solidified his reputation in the industry. He would join Associated Booking Corp, where his talent for spotting rising stars and his love for hip-hop led to the signing of such game-changing artists as Salt-N-Pepa, Roxanne Shante, Kid & Play, and DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.  He would go on to become Director of Marketing at EMI/Capitol Records and expanded again, this time into radio, promotions, and into the fields of jazz and rap, earning accolades in promotions and even producing, writing, and publishing successful tracks like "Remember the First Time" for singer Eric Gable and "Midnight Hour" for rapper Lady Spice MC.  Green moved as the industry moved and found himself in independent marketing and promotions consulting and secured a record deal with Light Year/Warner Brothers for his independent label, with singer/songwriter and R&B legend Teena Marie as his first artist. A year later, working with  Northstar Distribution, Green became General Manager, distributing music for Prince's independent label, where the purple one signed R&B music siren Chaka Khan and the soul-stirrer and crooner Larry Graham  on the artist's NPG Records. Soon, shaping his own destiny, Green launched Celebrity Talent Agency, representing a wide array of artists, where he's secured talents for tours, festivals and commercials nationally and globally.  Ever-expanding his vision, Green also serves as Associate Director/General Manager of Lehman Performing Arts Center, Chairman of Artist Relations for The Hip-Hop Museum (THHM), and maintains ownership of Celebrity Talent Agency.  The Show Must Go On! His riveting story of the industry's ups and downs and his own personal experiences will inspire anybody who believes in themselves to believe that they can live their wildest dreams!© 2025 Building Abundant Success!!2025 All Rights ReservedHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Sylvester Stewart was born in Dallas, Texas, but moved to the Bay area of California before becoming a multi-instrumentalist and changing his name to Sly Stone - the primary driver of the group Sly and the Family Stone.  This was one of the first integrated groups, and one that crossed many genres.  They played what would become known as psychedelic soul, but you can trace the origins of funk, soul, and psychedelic music through Sly and the Family Stone. The first Family Stone album was called “A Whole New Thing,” and it caught good critical coverage.  Unfortunately it was a commercial failure.  Clive Davis asked for a more pop friendly sound, and Sly Stone created an approach to their second album, Dance to the Music, which followed a formula.  Each lead singer would take turns on lead vocals or sing together in unison, the songs would feature a prominent solo for the instrumentalists, and the lyrics would appeal to a wide audience even though they would still focus on peace, love, and opposition to racism.  The group really did not care for the formulaic approach of this album, but it worked when it came to commercial appeal.  “Dance to the Music” became a top 10 pop hit, and it inspired several groups to gravitate towards psychedelic soul, including the Temptations, the Impressions, and the Four Tops.Sly Stone is the primary driver of the group, writing almost all of their songs, serving as a multi-instrumentalist, and as a primary vocalist.  His borhter Freddie Stone is on vocals and guitar, and his sister Rose Stone joins the group for the first time on this album.  Other members are Larry Graham on vocals and bass, Cynthia Robinson on trumpet and vocals, Jerri Martini on saxophone, Greg Errico on drums, and backing vocals by Little Sister (Vet Stone, Mary McCreary, and Elva Mouton).Sly and the Family Stone would release a number of songs to hit the top 10 in the Billboard Hot 100 in the years to come.  The follow-up album to this one is called "Stand!," and is considered the band's high water mark, along with their performance in 1969 at Woodstock.  The band would encounter instability and drug problems as time went on, with the original group dissolving in 1975.  Sly Stone would continue to record as "Sly and the Family Stone" for many years afterwards using rotating musicians, until drug problems basically forced him to retire by 1987.Bruce brings the early funk for this week's podcast. Are You ReadyThis song is an expression of opposition to racism with lyrics like "Don't hate the black, don't hate the white, of you get bit, just hate the bite.  Make sure you heart is beatin' right."Ride the RhythmThis song starts off side two of the album.  It is a straightforward dance song, and has some obvious comparisons to James Brown.  It has a nice mix of horns and "wah wah" guitar.Don't Burn BabyScat was an early precursor to rap music, and this track is a good example of a rapid rhyme scat.  The eastern feel is also reminiscent of George Harrison.  "Don't burn, baby, burn.  Just learn, baby, learn."Dance to the MusicHere is the big hit off the album, and the first Sly and the Family Stone single to reach the top 10 on the Billboard Charts, peaking at number 8.  It is a straight up party record, but was also one of the most influential songs of the late 60's.  The formula used by Sly Stone to make the songs on this record are clear here, even though he and the group did not like that approach. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shape of Things to Come by Max Frost and the Troopers (from the motion picture Wild In the Streets)This dystopian comedy-drama became a cult hit of 1960's counterculture.  Max Frost and the Troopers was a fictional rock band in the film. STAFF PICKS:Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing by Marvin Gaye and Tammi TerrellLynch starts out the staff picks with a smooth grooving song off the soul duo's album “United.”  Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced this song, which became a hit within a week of its release, going to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart.Anyone for Tennis by CreamRob brings us the theme song for the 1968 film “The Savage Seven,” an outlaw biker exploitation movie.  Eric Clapton's lyrics depict a callous disregard for all the turmoil going on in the world, with the singers discussing going out for a game of tennis while everything disintegrates around them. She's A Heartbreaker by Gene PitneyWayne features an early 60's crooner who turns to a Motown sound for this go-go hit.  It peaked at number 16 at the time.  It is about a guy who is continually drawn to a woman who breaks his heart every time.  Love Is All Around by The TroggsBruce's staff pick is probably most familiar to fans of the Christmas movie "Love Actually," where an old rocker converts it to a cheesy Christmas song called "Christmas Is All Around."  The Troggs' lead singer Reg Presley wrote it in about 10 minutes, inspired by a broadcast of the Salvation Army Band performing an evangelical song called "Love That's All Around." NOVELTY TRACK:The Unicorn by The Irish RoversThe Irish story of how the unicorn missed its appointment with Noah's Ark was on the charts in 1968, and closes out our podcast this week.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance Full Rig Details: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/donny-benetSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeThere's comical bands (Gwar), there's parody bands (Steel Panther), and there's clever combinations of both (Mac Sabbath). The Italian-Australian Donny Benét is none of those and all of those at the same time. His polished compositions, breezy rhythms, and funky fretwork are no laughing matter. Instead, Donny is the joke … or is he?“I thought, “What would I think if I saw some bald, chubby dude shredding on bass and fretless?' I'd be like ‘hell yeah,' so I might as well be the guy that'll do it,” explains Benét.Donny (born Ben Waples) is from a musical family in Sydney, Australia. He grew up performing on several instruments, became classically trained on piano, and earned a master's degree in double bass. The fluent musician started a career as a jazz bassist for various artists in Sydney, and eventually shifted to an experimental jazz/electronica band, Triosk. While both endeavors were challenging and rewarding, Ben wasn't having fun. After Triosk disbanded, Waples continued writing and recording on his own. It started with Cubase and a Line 6 DL4 that gave him 48-second loops. He started making “Donny Benét” joke songs. His friends and family continued encouraging him to make more, and before he knew it he had enough material to create Don't Hold Back. (To this day he still records all the parts except saxophone, played by his brother Daniel Waples.) And through his passion for creating music combined with his love for '70s funk and R&B—he mentions his introduction to electric bass was via a VHS tape featuring Larry Graham, Bernard Edwards, and Nile Rodgers—infused with the aesthetic and aura of Itala-disco performers, Donny Benét was born.“I'm a seriously trained jazz musician in a prior life, and I try not to take myself too seriously now, but I'm deadly serious about taking the piss out of myself. I like humor, but I definitely don't make joke music,” states Benét.Since 2011, he's released six albums, all showing an evolution and refinement of the Don. Each release has revealed a new part of Benet's infinite swagger, blending influences of Prince, Alan Vega, Lou Reed, Tom Jones, and, of course, James Jamerson, “Duck” Dunn, and the funk forefathers. Yes, Donny B can sweep you off your feet, but that's because one thing reigns supreme—the music.“With Donny I've always taken the approach of ‘what would I listen to?' I started there and I continue to follow it. If no one likes it, that's fine, so long as I like it. If someone else likes it, even better,” says Benét.Before his headlining gig at Nashville's Basement East, Donny B welcomed PG's Chris Kies onstage to chat about his minimal-but-musical setup. Benét explains the origins of “Donny,” covers his custom Furlanetto 4-string and why he calls it “probably the best live instrument I got,” and discusses scoring tons of gear when the exchange rate presents deals.Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/donny-benetSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - D'Addario Pedalboard Essentials0:15 - Chris Kies Intro0:49 - Donny Benét Intro1:42 - Donny Benét Origins8:55 - Custom Furlanetto "F Bass" VF413:39 - D'Addario & Rig Rundown14:11 -...

Dunderkattens muskulösa bas blev en sammanhållande kraft på Kendrick Lamars "To pimp a butterfly". In the last four decades Dony Wynn has played drums with Robert Palmer, Dr. John, Brooks & Dunn, Robert Plant and many, many more. He is an extremely inspired and colorful person with a very rich history in this business. I've been friends with Dony for years and i've always wanted to get to sit down and hear just how he got here. Well, I got to! from "growing up" in the extremely fertile New Orleans music scene to moving to Los Angeles with Bobby Kimball (Toto) and getting fired by Larry Graham which lead to a chance meeting with Robert Palmer, the artist with whom he would forge a musical and personal relationship that would last from 1979's "Bad Case Of Loving You" until Robert's untimely death in 2003. We talked for an hour and a half! Find Dony Wynn on Facebook & Instagram                If you feel so inclined. Venmo: www.venmo.com/John-Goudie-1  Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie

Ep 27: Patryce “Choc'let” Banks! [GRAHAM CENTRAL STATION]

visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more“Keepin that funk alive, to me, there's no more of an important mission.” So declares PATRYCE “CHOC'LET” BANKS, cofounder of one of the most important bands in all of funk history: Graham Central Station. “That's my mission,” she promises. “To keep the funk alive until the wheels fall off.” And she has been doing just that ever since the formation of the band's classic lineup with her former boo, uber innovative Sly & the Fam bassist Larry Graham, along with drummer Willie Wild, keyboardist Hershall Happiness, organist Robert “Butch” Sam, & guitarist David Dynamite. Together they hit the ground running from the jump. Word got out immediately that the band was superbad—folks would even get dressed up just to check out their rehearsals! Their constant practicing and performing at spots like the Orphanage in San Francisco led to the creation of their groundbreaking self-titled debut—(Choc'let's personal favorite). Yet even the most diehard funkateers might not realize that, before it was called Graham Central Station, the band was originally called HOT CHOC'LET, formed as a project for her to get down with while Larry was on the road. But after Graham had finally decided to relinquish his Family Stone membership, he joined the group, which then became his namesake. Choc'let wasn't mad about the new moniker, though. “I was with it because… how could you go wrong with Larry Graham in the group?” she says. “I think it was even my idea maybe a little bit.” Graham's breaking away from the Sly camp meant GCS could seriously get to work. “We would rehearse all the time,” remembers Choc'let. “Almost every night… And we were just getting tighter and tighter.” And audiences were easily falling in love with the band's celebratory intensity. “The music that we played was deeply infused with gospel music,” she confirms. “So that gave it the feeling of a revival… because of the way that it makes you feel and the way it gets you caught up.” In fact, audience members from San Francisco to Philly to D.C. would bring tambourines, whistles, and whatever percussion instrument they could find so they could get in on the action. “They'd be playing along with us,” she says. Choc'let's latest appearance on Aced Out—her third—is a superfunk extravaganza. In addition to another great interview, she performs not one, but TWO Bay Area funk classics live in the studio with Jay, Ace and other members of the Funkanauts fam. And in case you were wondering, the answer is yes—she brought her Rhythm King aka F-U-N-K Box. In this back-to-to school, in-person interview, Choc talks about why she thinks Sly was a better bandleader than Larry, the highs and lows of her reunion tour with GCS in the mid-90s, and why she dislikes the album version of “I Can't Stand the Rain.” She also reveals how Willie and Hershall originally came up with “The Jam” at rehearsal, how she recruited her old friend Butch to join the group, and why the Bay Area brand of funk has never been duplicated. an Issac Bradbury Production © 2022visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and more
