Welcome to Monday Night Live This week, Derek sits down with his longtime friend, Alan Stevens, a renowned reputation management expert, journalist, and professional speaker. The episode kicks off with Alan recounting his journey, starting as a teacher in the 1970s, moving into investigative journalism with the Consumers Association (known for publications like Which? Magazine), and eventually establishing his own reputation management firm. Alan's early days were filled with undercover investigations, including secret shopper experiences and inspecting garages. These moments offer a glimpse into his hands-on approach to uncovering the truth, with some hilariously intense stories of narrowly escaping confrontations! Alan also shares anecdotes about his role as a professional speaker and coach, having served as President of both the UK Professional Speakers Association and the Global Speakers Federation. From music MC gigs at age 12 (where he shared the stage with The Rolling Stones!) to coaching high-profile clients in handling media crises, Alan's storytelling is captivating. The conversation transitions into Alan's expertise in crisis management and reputation repair. He discusses high-profile case studies, including: Social Media Mishaps: Alan critiques public figures like Greg Wallace and Prince Andrew, emphasizing the importance of taking responsibility, controlling the narrative, and issuing genuine apologies to minimize damage. The Beverly Hills Hotel Boycott: Alan recounts navigating a complex crisis when the Sultan of Brunei's controversial legislation led Hollywood celebrities to boycott the hotel. Alan's strategic responses helped mitigate the fallout, showcasing his expertise in managing high-stakes situations. Lessons from Public Blunders: From Gerald Ratner's infamous speech to David Letterman's tactful handling of blackmail, Alan highlights what to do—and what to avoid—when facing public scrutiny. In this candid discussion, Alan explains how reputation repair isn't just about damage control—it's about authenticity, humility, and strategic communication. He stresses the importance of never lying, apologizing sincerely, and focusing on rebuilding trust. The episode also offers lighthearted moments, like Derek and Alan reminiscing about their time at the National Speakers Association of Australia conference and their hilarious experience co-hosting a charity auction. Alan's humor and authenticity shine through as he reflects on these personal anecdotes. Key takeaways from this episode: How to handle media crises and social media slip-ups with grace. The importance of staying calm, taking responsibility, and controlling the narrative during challenging times. The value of turning public missteps into opportunities for growth and redemption. Whether you're a speaker, business leader, or someone interested in personal branding, this episode is packed with practical advice, real-life stories, and plenty of laughs. Alan's wealth of knowledge and Derek's engaging questions make for a thought-provoking and entertaining conversation. f you'd like to connect with Alan Stevens, you can reach him at alan@mediacoach.co.uk or find him on his website. There's assurance the Government's proposed building consents scheme, allowing tradespeople to self-certify, is safe. Businesses with a track record of delivering bigger projects will be able to access streamlined consenting. Qualified tradespeople will be able to forego inspections for low risk builds through the opt in 'self-certification scheme'. Master Plumbers Chief Executive Greg Wallace told Ryan Bridge there's proof it works. He says Gas Fitters and Electricians have already been self-certified for 14 years, with no significant issues. Wallace says it will save workers and customers time and money, as at the moment adding 30 centimetres to your bathroom will take around four inspections to get a consent. Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
Beverage can painting has been around since the 1930s but due to the intensive offset lithography process, a common method for printing on aluminium packaging, microbrewers have had to sell massive quantities of cans to justify the cost.Historically, the process has involved prepress preparation of the artwork, followed by the creation of separate printing plates for each colour used in the design. Ink is applied to the plates, transferred to rubber blanket cylinders, and then onto the aluminium cans as they pass through the printing press. Each colour is applied in separate passes, and quality control measures ensure the final product meets standards. After printing, the ink is dried and cured to prevent smudging. But what if there was a way for breweries to utilise the entire can for their artwork without the massive cost or minimum order quantities? Recently, Oasthouse Engineering - a manufacturer and supplier of cans and machinery in Rotherham, UK, invested in a state-of-the-art digital printer that allows breweries of all shapes and sizes to print their artwork directly onto cans, changing the way that brewers present their beers. As a design and marketing agency, we're heavily invested in making sure our client's beers are presented in the best possible light. Therefore, we partnered with Oasthouse Engineering for this special episode of the Hop Forward Podcast to discuss all things digital print and cans, before taking a look at the machine and having a few Greg Wallace moments along the way. Many of the leading craft brewers in the UK have already started using Oasthouse Engineering to print their cans, so we ask Sam Morris of the business to talk us through the process and discuss any requirements your own designers may need to be aware of when it comes to setting up designs for print.Moreso, Sam is passionate about sustainability and discusses how on-can digital printing is also beneficial to the recycling chain. To find out more visit https://oasthouse-engineering.com/digitally-printed-cans and visit the Hop Forward Instagram account to see the machine in action.THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY OASTHOUSE ENGINEERINGThis week's episode of the Hop Forward Podcast is brought to you by Oasthouse Engineering. The U.S. Supreme Court's abortion decision received all the attention, but the court also agreed to take up something next term involving a case from North Carolina. It involves the state legislature and the courts. The details are complicated, but some could say a decision could fundamentally change democracy. But could it? We bring back our legal experts, Greg Wallace from Campbell Law and Bill Marshall from UNC Law, to break down everything surrounding this major case. Some argue it could even be used to overturn future presidential elections.
Last week's abortion ruling by the Supreme Court created just as many questions as answers. What's the future of abortion in North Carolina? Why did the court rule the way it did and the history behind it? Can states legally pass laws banning abortions out of state or abortion pills to enter a state? Importantly, are other rights like same-sex marriage and contraceptives in danger? We bring on two very passionate law professors who know this as well as anyone. Bill Marshall from UNC School of Law and Greg Wallace from Campbell Law School help us understand the reasoning behind the decision and what's next.
