Before she rocks out on stage next month at Mighty Hoopla festival, British singer-songwriter Amy Studt takes a special trip down memory lane with Joel and David, reminiscing on her anthemic 2000s smash 'Misfit' and every aspect of her landmark debut album "False Smiles", the Gold-certified album which spawned four singles - including two UK Top 10 hits. Where the US market had Avril Lavigne and Hilary Duff, we were channelling all our teenage angst with Amy! Amy's rise to pop stardom sounds like something straight out of a movie. Enter a "grungy teen" from a seaside English town who loved to write songs, plucked from obscurity by music svengali Simon Fuller (the man behind Spice Girls and S Club 7) and placed in the studio with some of the industry's best pop songwriters and producers. Cue Karen Poole, Yak Bondy, David Eriksen, Cathy Dennis, Gary Barlow, Eliot Kennedy, and Rob Davis. This conversation is a real nostalgic snapshot of a teen pop star's life in the early 2000s. From legendary 19 Management Christmas parties with Amy Winehouse, Pop Idol stars and S Club 7, through to "CD:UK" and extravagant overseas music video shoots... and even the curious case of a Sheryl Crow cover. Proving she's so much more than 'Just A Little Girl', Amy also talks about how her artistry has evolved over the years with the 2008 alt-pop gem "My Paper Made Men" and avant-garde 2019 "Happiest Girl In The Universe" - and what's next for her. Interview by Kris PetersAcclaimed musical innovator and six-time Grammy nominee, Steven Wilson, will bring his highly anticipated The Overview Tour to Australia this November. His arrival will follow a massive run of UK, European and American dates and celebrates the release of his eighth solo album, The Overview, out now via Fiction Records.Australian fans can expect a captivating live experience from one of contemporary music's most boundary-pushing, genre bending artists. Accompanied by accomplished and seasoned veterans including Nick Beggs on bass (Mute Gods, Steve Hackett), legendary jazz keyboardist, Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Ray Manzarek), Craig Blundell on drums (Steve Hackett, Frost) and Randy McStine on guitars (Marco Minnemann, The Fringe) this world-class line up will bring the expansive, progressive soundscapes to life in a way that can only be experienced in a live setting. The Overview is a 42-minute conceptual journey inspired by the “overview effect” of astronauts viewing Earth from space, and marks a return to the long-form progressive style Steven Wilson redefined with the iconic Porcupine Tree and his earlier solo work. Featuring two ambitious tracks and immersive spatial audio production, The Overview blends progressive sprawl with cinematic electronics and lush, immersive vibes all wrapped in spatial audio wizardry. It's a bold addition to his repertoire which also includes six Grammy nominations, three consecutive UK Top 5 albums and a string of iconic remixes for artists including, Pink Floyd, The Who, King Crimson and Tears For Fears. The Australian tour promises to be a thrilling and dynamic experience. Expect a set packed with The Overview's mind-bending sprawl, alongside cuts from his acclaimed and peerless career.HEAVY had the pleasure of chatting with Wilson, in an enlightening chat that proves why the man is so highly regarded in the music industry. One of the questions we asked focused on the length of his songs and whether the global shortening of attention spans comes into his thinking when writing."The simple answer is I try not to think about the listener when I mark art," he answered honestly. "That sounds very selfish and self-indulgent, and it is, but I've always believed that artists - if I can pretentiously call myself that - should never be thinking about their audience when they create the art, I think by definition it is a selfish act, and you just hope that people want to go with you on that journey. You hope that people will give you the benefit of the doubt. I have a fairly loyal fan base that listen to everything I do. Even if they moan about it, and they complain it's not what they want they still go with me on that journey (smiles), which I think is something that I've built up over the years, that kind of loyalty. Also, I think there's a sense of providing the alternative. There's always been this notion in pop and rock of alternative music. Providing the alternative to whatever is the mainstream at the moment. The mainstream at the moment, as you suggested, is very immediate, short, synthesized pop music. Usually sung by female solo artists. That seems to be very much the prevalent, mainstream, pop formula. So here I am kind of providing the alternative to that. There are people that want that. There are people who want to engage on a deeper level and are prepared to sit and listen to a longer piece of music. So in that sense I see myself as the alternative to the mainstream, and there's always an audience for that."In the full interview, Steve runs us through his busy schedule, tells us what has changed since his last visit, his backing band and what they bring to the live show, The Overview and how fans responded, the conceptual story it is based on and how it transpired to verse, the balance of writing long compositions in the face of people's shortening attention spans, the musical atmosphere generated in his music and the process of bringing it to life, constructing set lists when so many of his songs are lengthy and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

With his distinctive blend of soul, punk energy, and sharp fashion sense, Dig became the driving force behind JoBoxers' signature sound — a mix of Northern soul, pop, and punk influences. The band quickly rose to prominence with their debut single "Boxer Beat" in 1983, which became a UK Top 5 hit. They followed it up with the equally successful "Just Got Lucky," which not only charted in the UK but also found success in the US, becoming a staple of 1980s pop culture. Dig's soulful vocals and magnetic stage presence helped define JoBoxers' image, making them one of the most distinctive acts of the era. After JoBoxers disbanded in the mid-1980s, Dig Wayne explored a solo career and acting roles, but his work with JoBoxers remains a defining moment in 1980s music history. From Huddersfield to Bangkok, pop fans - are you ready for an adventure? Join Joel and David as they kick start a new ‘Discovering' series where they each pick a hidden gem of an artist from the 2000s and select 5 songs from their catalogue for a taste test! Signed to Jive Records and launched in 1999, British pop starlet Ellie Campbell looked and sounded like a ready-made pop star here for the GMTV and Smash Hits audience! Despite having no formal singing or dance training, Ellie's warm soulful tone and star quality was undeniable. The Yorkshire songstress worked with same hitmakers behind Steps (Pete Waterman, Mark Topham, Karl Twigg), launched a handful of singles - including the UK Top 30 smash ‘So Many Ways' - and even found herself performing at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! Though she wasn't in the pop game for long, Ellie's bops are forever - and her self-titled album “Ellie” is a real gem! Before LISA from BLACKPINK, in the 2000s, the world had Thai pop princess Tata Young. Her crossover success in Japan, India, China and across Southeast Asia was pretty much unheard of. Thanks in huge part to her fun signature banger and your new favourite bratty anthem: ‘Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy' (co-written by legendary pop songwriter Savan Kotecha, who has worked with Ariana Grande, Britney, One Direction, and Dannii Minogue). Tata's catalogue of English tunes is top-tier, as she brings her Main Pop Girl Energy to songs that would be released in the West by Ashley Tisdale, The Cheetah Girls, Play and more. The writing credits on her three English albums read like a ‘who's who' of RBAY! royalty - Jamelia, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Samantha Jade etc. If you're liking this ‘Discovering' concept - let Joel and David know in the comments who you'd like us to cover next! In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, Zufi Deo, co-founder of BizGees Ltd, shares how his social enterprise harnesses that passion to support post-conflict communities through a project called Arts for Refugees. The program collaborates closely with Gen Z, integrating their talents and perspectives into storytelling that shines a light on the lives and challenges faced by refugees. Zufi explained, “We work with 250 plus Gen Z. They create user-generated content for us, and then we share that publicly. So it's for Gen Z, by Gen Z, with Gen Z.”What makes Arts for Refugees unique is its multidimensional approach. Participants aren't just creating content; they are directly connected with the subject matter through hands-on learning experiences. “Tomorrow morning, for example, I'm onboarding 17 students from King's College, London, War Studies Department. They'll be trained as student journalists to write articles on post-conflict topics,” Zufi shared. These articles are often recorded as podcasts, offering a personal touch that highlights the deep connections these young writers have with their topics, especially for those with refugee backgrounds themselves. The initiative's work goes beyond raising awareness—it informs policymakers and influences strategic frameworks. For instance, BizGees shared insights with the Boston Consulting Group for a UNHCR report, showing the program's real-world impact.BizGees, a hybrid social enterprise, demonstrates how for-profit strategies can be leveraged to create sustainable social change, tapping into capitalism to fuel global impact. As Zufi put it, “We use a for-profit mechanism to achieve [social value]. That allows us to tap into the resources of capitalism... to meet everyone's needs economically, but also emotionally and socially.”Zufi's insights remind us of the power of peer-to-peer connection and the role young people play in reshaping narratives around refugees.tl;dr:* Empowering Gen Z for Social Impact: In this episode, Zufi Deo discusses how BizGees engages Gen Z to create user-generated content that raises awareness about post-conflict communities, fostering a unique "by Gen Z, for Gen Z" model of social involvement.* Building Passionate Communities: Zufi's superpower lies in his ability to unite people and inspire them to act on causes they believe in. He recounted organizing business mentorships in London to support thousands of entrepreneurs, highlighting the power of collective passion.* Human-Centric Engagement: A central theme in today's conversation was the emphasis on treating people as human beings, not numbers. Zufi shared that this approach, though more time-consuming and costly, leads to deeper connections and more impactful results.* Personal Stories to Drive Connection: The episode featured moving examples of individuals who, through Arts for Refugees, not only gained support but contributed their experiences to educate and inform others, illustrating the profound peer-to-peer learning model in action.* Social Enterprise for Sustainable Change: BizGees, described as a hybrid social enterprise, showcases how for-profit structures can be leveraged to support meaningful social outcomes, combining the resources of capitalism with a mission to foster global awareness and empathy. How to Develop Inspiring Collective Action As a SuperpowerZufi's superpower lies in his remarkable ability to bring people together and ignite their passion for causes that matter. This talent has allowed him to lead impactful initiatives and support individuals and groups toward achieving meaningful goals. In today's episode, Zufi highlighted how he discovered his superpower during his time in London, where he supported over 2,000 entrepreneurs over a decade by organizing teams of business mentors to guide them. He described how fostering an environment where people felt connected to a purpose and to each other was at the core of his work.An illustrative story that exemplifies Zufi's superpower involved a well-connected but struggling entrepreneur who had organized a group for women but couldn't find mentors. Zufi recounted, “She literally came to tears because she did not know what to do or where to go.” He and his team stepped in, mentoring the group monthly and teaching them how to find support, ultimately empowering them to take ownership and thrive.Zufi's approach for developing this superpower includes actionable tips:* See individuals as human beings with inherent value, not just numbers or names.* Dedicate time and resources to foster genuine, person-to-person connections.* Build small, manageable groups for better interaction and deeper engagement.* Embed empathy and respect in every interaction, even if it requires more time and effort.By following Zufi Deo's example and advice, you can make inspiring collective passion a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. In the tapestry of the cosmos, there are those who can read the stars and decipher the divine language of the universe. On today's episode, we welcome the insightful Pam Gregory, an esteemed astrologer whose journey began with a serendipitous encounter and has led her to unravel the mysteries of the celestial bodies. Pam Gregory offers a profound perspective on how the stars and planets influence our lives and the collective journey of humanity.Pam begins by sharing her belief in an impending metamorphosis for humanity. She envisions a future where we will transform into beings of light, shedding our dense physical forms and embracing a more telepathic and healing existence. This shift, she explains, will not be a gradual evolution but a significant leap in our state of being. "I think we're going to become beings that we have never been before, we're going to change our state of being there's going to be a complete metamorphosis," says Pam, painting a picture of a beautiful, light-filled future. Our conversation delves into the historical and practical aspects of astrology. Pam recounts her early encounter with astrology in Canada, where a chance meeting with a Jamaican astrologer changed her life. This encounter ignited a lifelong passion for studying the stars, a journey that has been as much about self-discovery as it has been about understanding the cosmos. Pam's ability to read a birth chart, which she describes as a unique sheet of music, allows her to provide insights into an individual's psyche and life path.Pam's description of astrology as a language is particularly enlightening. She compares it to learning French or Spanish, emphasizing that it is not about belief but about understanding and interpreting the archetypes and geometry of the planets. This approach demystifies astrology, presenting it as a practical tool for navigating life. "It's just a language," Pam explains. "It's literally a language so it's just like learning French or, or Spanish or whatever."In discussing the future, Pam highlights the significant astrological events shaping our world. She speaks of the transition from heavy earth and water signs to lighter air and fire signs, which will accelerate technological advancements and societal changes. Pam predicts that by 2026, we will witness a significant new beginning, a renaissance of creativity and spiritual awakening.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSMetamorphosis of Humanity: Pam foresees a leap in human evolution, where we transform into beings of light with heightened telepathy and healing abilities. This change will bring about rapid advancements in technology and a shift in societal structures, moving away from top-down hierarchies to more collaborative and grassroots movements.Pam's insights extend to the broader societal transformations we are witnessing. She speaks of the Pluto return for the United States, a time of significant upheaval and rebirth, affecting the country's values and political system. UB40, a reggae band from Birmingham, UK, emerged in the late 70s from humble beginnings, with members scraping by on unemployment benefits. The band's original lineup consisted of friends from Moseley School of Art and local schools: Robin and Ali Campbell, Earl Falconer, Brian Travers, Jimmy Brown, Norman Hassan, and later, Michael Virtue and Astro. They named themselves after the unemployment benefit form "UB40" and quickly became known for their left-wing political stance, aligning themselves with causes like Rock Against Racism and anti-National Front protests. In 1980, UB40's debut single "King b/w Food For Thought" reached the UK Top 5, setting the stage for their success. Their first album, Signing Off (1980), was a blend of reggae, dub, and politically charged lyrics, reaching No. 2 in the UK and staying in the charts for 72 weeks. By 1981, their second album, Present Arms, solidified their reputation, with the hit single "One In Ten" becoming an anthem for the unemployed and a protest against the UK government's policies. UB40's third album, UB44 (1982), marked a transition, but it was Labour of Love (1983) that truly catapulted them to international fame. This album of reggae covers, including the iconic "Red Red Wine," became their first UK No. 1 album and produced their first US No. 1 single. This success established UB40 as reggae ambassadors, introducing reggae to new audiences worldwide. Throughout the 1980s, UB40 continued to release successful albums, including Geffery Morgan (1984), Rat In The Kitchen (1986), and UB40 (1988). Their collaborations with Chrissie Hynde on "I Got You Babe" and "Breakfast In Bed" were also hits. The late 80s and early 90s saw the band achieve global success with Labour Of Love II and Promises and Lies, the latter featuring "Can't Help Falling In Love," which became another US No. 1 hit. In the mid-90s, the band took a break, with members pursuing solo projects. However, they returned with Guns In The Ghetto and Labour Of Love III , continuing to tour extensively. Their influence and success were underscored by their contribution to the England rugby team's 2003 World Cup campaign with "Swing Low" and the Grammy-nominated Who You Fighting For (2005), which featured politically charged songs and love ballads. In 2008, Ali Campbell left the band to pursue a solo career, replaced by his brother Duncan Campbell. The band continued to release albums and tour, with TwentyFourSeven receiving critical acclaim. Despite Astro's departure in 2013, UB40 continued to tour successfully, playing sold-out shows across the UK, Europe, and beyond. UB40's enduring appeal lies in their ability to blend reggae with socially conscious lyrics, making them one of the most influential reggae bands in history. Their journey from Birmingham's working-class roots to global stardom is a testament to their talent, resilience, and commitment to their music and message. To celebrate their 45th anniversary, the band has just released the album UB45. Joining us this week to share the story of their rise to international fame is original member, drummer Jimmy Brown. Joel and David are back with a new girl band episode and in a rare move for this 2000s pop podcast, we've opened the time portal and crossed into the future... the 2010s! Get ready, 'cause here comes a hurricane! Today we're celebrating Neon Jungle, Parade and SoundGirl - three amazing UK girl groups backed by major labels that blasted on the scene between 2011 and 2013, but were sadly gone too soon. The vibes are confident! The fusion of electrifying girl band energy with loud fashion and even louder tunes means we are in for a seriously fun 2010s throwback episode. Ichi, ni, san... kaisu! Neon Jungle - made up of Jess Plummer, Shireen Cutkelvin, Asami Zdrenka and Amira McCarthy - scored four UK Top 20 hits including the No.4 smash 'Braveheart'. Their incredible album "Welcome To The Jungle" is packed with bangers, written by More Mega, CockNBullKid, MNEK, A*M*E and Charli XCX! Grab a pair of fake glasses, a stylish hat (or silk turban!), and give yourself a spritz of perfume, 'cause Parade is here. Bianca Claxton, Jess Agombar, Emily Biggs, Sian Charlesworth and Lauren Deegan definitely made a splash on arrival with their vibrant pop bops 'Louder' and 'Perfume'. The self-titled album is the real treasure trove here! Izzy Bizu, Olivia "Liv Lovelle" Redmond, and Nicole "Little Nikki" Shortland were SoundGirl, a pop R&B trio who worked with Miranda Cooper (Xenomania) and opened for Justin Bieber, Pixie Lott and The Wanted. It seemed criminal that they never got to release an album but we still can't get enough of the singles 'Don't Know Why' and 'I'm The Fool'! Kieran McFeely aka Simple Kid released two acclaimed albums in the noughties before seeming to disappear around 2008. He sold his guitar and packed away his gear. A decade would pass before he went looking for the boxes in his attic. Simple Kid released third album Simple Kid 3: Health & Safety in 2022, and played a show at Whelan's in April 2023. Now, Simple Kid plays the Grand Social in Dublin on Saturday, May 4, and Cyprus Avenue, Cork, on Sunday, May 5, presented by Singular Artists. From Cork, it will be his first hometown show in 17 years. Ahead of the shows, he talks on the TPOE podcast about his journey, how he came back to the Simple Kid project after 10 years not thinking about it. We talk about his old band the V Necks/The Young Offenders, and how that led to his solo project in the early 2000s. Acclaim, charting, and an appearance on 'Later with Jools Holland' all followed. Buy tickets for Simple Kid live at the Grand Social and Cyprus Avenue: https://singularartists.ie/show/simple-kid-2024/ ----- Press release: Once upon a time, back in 2003, a young hopeful by the name of Simple Kid emerged with his first solo album, Simple Kid 1: full of optimism and arrogance, he was sure of his place in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. He garnered some awards nominations, some high profile tours, some good times, some bad. Like many before and since, he was ‘the next big thing' with a UK Top 40, appearances on ‘Later With Jools', Glastonbury slots and prestigious touring. In 2008, he followed this up with Simple Kid 2: not so many awards, not so much TV, lots of touring but running out of money, hair receding, girlfriend pregnant. Then along came ‘life'. And life said that Simple Kid needed to change the chapter in his book, to move on. So Simple Kid became Kieran and started to do things like: get a job, get tired, raise children, have financial struggles. Still some good times, some bad. But secretly in 2018, Kieran bought a guitar, a microphone and some speakers and started recording quietly in his loft. He didn't tell anyone, not even his family. He started uploading songs to YouTube and eventually released 13 of these songs as an album called ‘Simple Kid 3: Health & Safety' in 2022. Kieran has now changed his name back to Simple Kid and decided to come out to play again. He imagines there will be some good times, some bad.

Podcast Overview: Moby & Will discuss his 30 years in the industry, where young creatives go nowadays, not focussing on selling out DJ tours & his journey with his mental health. Who is Moby: Richard Melville Hall, 11 September 1965, New York, USA. A New York DJ, recording artist, Christian, vegan and Philosophy graduate. Moby is so nicknamed because of the fact that he can trace his ancestry to the author of the famous whaling tale. This is by no means the only interesting aspect of his idiosyncratic artistic life. He refuses to travel anywhere by car because of the environmental considerations, and generally displays little of the public anonymity that is the creed of the underground DJ. In 1991, he took the Twin Peaks theme, under the guise of "Go", into the UK Top 10. Although that appealed to the more perverse natures of both mainstream and club audiences, the release of "I Feel It"/"Thousand" in 1993 was yet more bizarre. The latter track was classified by The Guinness Book Of Records as the fastest single ever, climaxing at 1,015 bpm. It was typical of Moby's playful, irreverent attitude to his work. In his youth he was a member of hardcore punk outfit the Vatican Commandos, and even substituted as singer for Flipper while their vocalist was in prison. He has brought these rock 'n' roll inclinations to bear on the world of dance music: at the 1992 DMC/Mixmag Awards ceremony he trashed his keyboards at the end of his set. His introduction to dance music began in the mid-80s: "I was drawn to it, I started reading about it, started hanging out in clubs. For me house music was the synthesis of the punk era." He collected cheap, second hand recording equipment, basing himself in an old factory/converted prison in New York's Little Italy district. The albums issued by New York dance label Instinct collect the artist's early work. Ambient comprised unissued cuts from 1988-91, composed of barely audible atmospheric interludes. Moby signed to leading independent Mute Records in 1993, and the following year released "Hymn", a transcendental religious techno odyssey, distinguished by a 35-minute ambient mix and a Laurent Garner remix. The track was included on his eclectic major label debut, Everything Is Wrong. His own remix catalogue includes Brian Eno, LFO ("Tan Ta Ra"), Pet Shop Boys, Erasure ("Chorus"), Orbital ("Speed Freak"), Depeche Mode and even Michael Jackson. He moved away from his dance base in 1996 with the thrash rock of Animal Rights, and in turn sounded more like Johnny Rotten. His "James Bond Theme' debuted at UK number 8 in November 1997. The attendant I Like To Score was an uneasy experiment in soundtrack work. Another change of style was apparent on 1999"s Play, a superb album on which several tracks were based around sampled field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in the earlier part of the century. Play became a remarkable sleeper hit, thanks in the main to the licensing of every track on the album for use in advertisements. Moby repeated the Play formula to lesser effect on 18. Teedee is our very special guest this week! His rise to success may seem quick, but he started planning this journey at just age 16 when he was DJing at his local town in Sheffield, UK. After getting a few gigs here and there, as well as learning how to produce hip-hop beats, he decided to use his personality on social media to kick-start his career beyond the resident club scene. After a single viral video, he had major labels wanting to work with him and has continued to build a huge global audience, which is now over 400k followers across platforms. In 2022, he teamed up with Bugzy Malone for the track 'Out of Nowhere,' which went on to be an official UK Top 10 and has surpassed 50 million streams on Spotify alone. He has a major record deal and is due to release music in 2024 with some of the biggest house producers in the world. He has launched his own label as well as an events company. 1987: The year of the mega-album (Bad...Faith...The Joshua Tree...Appetite For Destruction...The Zit Remedy...) big, booming, glossy pop singles, hair metal, mall pop and hip-hop. But, lurking beneath that "high '80s" sheen were some of the finest alternative songs of the O3L era. That, dear listener, is where we come in. In 1987's indie world, it didn't get much bigger than The Wedding Present, led by singer/songwriter/guitarist AND this week's Third Lad, David Gedge. The Weddoes, as they are affectionately known by fans, scored a #1 indie LP with their debut full-length, George Best, and occupied five spots (including four in the Top 10) on the legendary John Peel's year end Festive Fifty list. Over the next decade, The Wedding Present would remain a vital fixture on the scene, racking up 16 UK Top 40 hits. In 1992 alone, they tied a record set by Elvis Presley by releasing twelve Top 30 singles within a twelve-month period. Since then, the ever-prolific self-professed "workaholic" Gedge has released a consistent string of records both under The Wedding Present and Cinerama monikers, right up to the brand new Weddoes triple album 24 Songs. 24 Songs collects the twelve 7" singles (once every month) that Gedge and band released during 2022. This remarkable set is now available from Happy Happy Birthday To Me in the US and Clue Records in the UK. https://hhbtm.bandcamp.com. One of the few solo artists from the 1960's to have co-written nearly all of his songs and created his own original sound, Lou Christie's chart-topping, multi-million selling career as a songwriter, recording artist and performer started at the tender age of 18. He co-wrote and released his first Gold record, 1962's “The Gypsy Cried”, followed quickly by “Two Faces Have I”, a Top 5 pop hit in 1963, transforming him into a national teen idol. In 1966, Christie forever embedded himself and his trademark high-falsetto voice into America's consciousness with “Lightnin' Strikes”, a platinum-plus single which hit the top of the Billboard pop charts as well as the UK Top 20 and remains a radio and streaming staple today. More hits followed including 1966's controversial “Rhapsody In The Rain” and 1969's Top 10 “I'm Gonna Make You Mine”.
