What are the mysterious objects seen flying over Santopolis? Can Falk stop them with the help of a new paramilitary force made up of old familiar faces? How do you feel about cilantro? Listen to find out!Uniquely Heroic Americans, episode 121 of This Gun in My Hand, was seasoned and lorded over by Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, and to buy my books, such as Sisyphus, Eat Your Heart Out, available in paperback and ebook from Amazon. What makes my chili taste uniquely American? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. Is this the first episode to quote Dead Kennedys lyrics? Maybe.2. Darn, I should have started the ad with “speaking of motherships…”3. Robert Thomas Northrup's mother did not rewrite the ad text in this episode. Some unnamed fictional character who wrote the ad might have solicited notes and rewrites from their mother, or might have been lying. Many statements made by characters in This Gun in My Hand are lies or mistakes. That's for you to determine because your interpretation is more important than the actual author's intent. See “The Death of the Author,” an essay by Roland Barthes.https://web.archive.org/web/20200419132326/http://www.ubu.com/aspen/aspen5and6/threeEssays.html#barthes4. “In the Western world, Persia (or its cognates) was historically the common name for Iran. In 1935, Reza Shah asked foreign delegates and League of Nations to use the term Iran (‘Land of the Aryans'), the endonym of the country, used by its native people, in formal correspondence.” - “Reza Shah,” Wikipedia, 2 January 2025, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reza_Shah#Replacement_of_Persia_with_IranCredits:The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Is it wrong to make up stories about silly gunfights fifty years ago while authoritarian figures are taking power and civilians are getting massacred as we speak? That's the dilemma Falk has to solve, in the middle of a gunfight! The Hapless Hack of Gazpacho Gulch, episode 119 of This Gun in My Hand, was rustled up and branded with innuendo by Rob Northrup. (But wait until the strike's over to order it.) What helps me escape from my neighbor's basement? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. Getting a story accepted by an editor who was then fired, and getting it rejected by his replacement, was based on something that happened to my favorite creative writing professor, the late Dr. Gilbert Cross. The editor who liked his stuff published three of his spy novels under the name “Jon Winters” in the late 70s and early 80s, before getting replaced by an editor who didn't like them.Credits:The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Studio Shed was started in the Boulder, Colorado backyard of their co-founder Jeremy Nova, a pro mountain biker and Olympian. Jeremy needed a place to store all his bikes and was uninspired by what was available, so he built his own. Today, Studio Sheds are still built in Colorado, and their portfolio now includes studios, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), and commercial spaces. Jeremy built that first shed back in 2008, yet today, many of Studio Shed's designs still look just like the original. Sheds and ADUs are a great way to provide extra room for outdoor gear, remote work offices, or additional living spaces. In today's conversation, we sit down with Studio Shed's co-founder Mike Koenig to discuss their unique approach to designing and building prefabricated backyard structures that are well-built, eco-friendly, and stylish.RELATED LINKS:Check out the Blister Craft CollectiveBecome a BLISTER+ MemberStudio Shed website: https://www.studio-shed.com/TOPICS & TIMES:Riding Bikes and Founding a Company (0:46)Tokyo Joe's MTB Team (3:51)Jeremy's Homemade Shed (6:24)Panelized Construction (10:25)The Studio Shed Design Process & Steps to Purchasing a Studio Shed (21:58)How to DIY Build a Studio Shed (29:40)Eco-friendly Designs (36:20)Mike's Bike (51:46)SEE OUR OTHER PODCASTS:Blister CinematicBikes & Big IdeasGEAR:30Blister Podcast Hosted on Acast. Violent Vacation with Peruvian Nuns was a tape released by the UK skate/thrash band The Stupids in 1986. In the village where I grew up (literally, legally a “village”), I was not on the cutting edge of knowledge about hardcore punk. The only radio stations within range were top 40, oldies or country, except for a freeform college radio station from Ann Arbor. When my family took a month long road trip in maybe summer 1988, we stopped a few days in San Diego. I might have passed over this tape at the swap meet, never heard of The Stupids before, but the cover had a cartoon of a twitching guy in a wheelchair by Don Martin. Great music, problematic pseudonyms and album titles, probably problematic lyrics but who can understand what Brits are singing? And I bet they used the cartoon without paying Don Martin or Mad Magazine. Rascals!Credits:The opening and middle transitional music clips were from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. BrainWaves is an academic audio podcast whose mission is to educate medical providers through clinical cases and topical reviews in neurology, medicine, and the humanities. Episodes originally aired from 2016 to 2021. Originally released: May 30, 2019 Since January 1, 2019, there have been nearly 900 confirmed measles cases across 24 states in the United States. This is 10 times greater than the number of cases in the US 3 years ago, and it is the largest outbreak the US has seen since 1994. The month of May also marks the first reported case of measles in the state of Pennsylvania, where BrainWaves is produced. So this week on the program, Jim Siegler speaks with Dr. Erika Mejia (pediatrician) about the medical and sociopolitical triggers for this outbreak, the misconceptions of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, and finally, what you can do to keep measles from "going viral."* Produced by James E Siegler and Erika Mejia. As of 2018, the American Heart Association recommends treatment up to 24 hours after time last seen normal for select patients. This week on the BrainWaves podcast, Dr. Tudor Jovin--PI for the DAWN and REVASCAT clinical trials--summarizes the history of thrombectomy trials and what it is about our current strategies that have breathed new life into a technique that has historically fizzled. Originally released: October 11, 2018 As the name suggests, "evidence-based medicine" is dependent on published evidence to support our clinical practice and medical decision-making. Implicit in this is the notion that all published evidence reflects the truth that underlies the biology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology of our health. This is not the case. Clinical research and published findings can be extremely limited, and what you read in Lancet and NEJM should be interpreted with caution. In this week's episode of the "I wonder" series, where Jim Siegler speaks with Ali Hamedani on various topics in medicine and neurology, the speakers review the major biases inherent to the practice and interpretation of clinical research.
