With a win in the season finale at Phoenix Raceway, Kyle Larson etched his name in the record books as the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion. Paired with crew chief Cliff Daniels, Larson won five of 10 playoff races and 10 total points-paying events to secure his first Cup title in his seventh full-time season and first with 14-time Cup champions Hendrick Motorsports. During Larson's career-best season, the driver of the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet paced the field 2,581 times – the most in a season since four-time Cup Series champion and now Vice Chairman of Hendrick Motorsports Jeff Gordon led 2,610 laps in 1995. Larson posted career-best numbers in victories (10), top-five finishes (20), top-10s (26), laps led (2,581), average start (6.1) and stage victories (18) – all tops in NASCAR's premier series in 2021. Larson also won $1 million with his victory in the annual non-points NASCAR All-Star Race at Texas Motor Speedway. Including dirt-track races, Larson won 34 percent of the races he competed in 2021 with 33 victories across 97 events. Among those victories were his first trips to victory lane in the prestigious Knoxville Nationals and Kings Royal sprint car events, Larson's first win in the Prairie Dirt Classic dirt late model race and his second consecutive victory in Chili Bowl Midget Nationals. The 16-time Cup race winner is half Japanese and the only Asian-American to regularly compete in NASCAR. He is the first NASCAR Drive for Diversity graduate to race full-time at the Cup level and now serves as a mentor for the program. Since 2018, he has been a volunteer with the Urban Youth Racing School in Philadelphia, which helps expose students of color to motor sports. In May 2020, Larson also began working with the Minneapolis-based Sanneh Foundation to advance diversity, equity and community well-being. Last March, Larson announced the launch of the Kyle Larson Foundation (KyleLarsonFoundation.org), which was established to better serve today's youth, families and communities in need through hands-on support. The Sanneh Foundation and the Urban Youth Racing School are the primary beneficiaries of the foundation, which also works closely with Hendrick Cares, the corporate social responsibility program of Hendrick Automotive Group. To kickstart the “Drive for 5,” Larson pledged a personal donation of $5 for every Cup Series lap he completed last season and contributed another $5,000 for every top-five finish for a total of $145,000. The Elk Grove, California, native has won more than 250 events across a variety of sanctioning bodies and vehicle styles. Larson began driving at age 7 and has raced stock cars, winged and non-winged sprint cars, dirt late models, karts, trucks, and sports cars. In 2012, Larson was signed by Earnhardt Ganassi Racing as a developmental driver. He secured two victories, eight top-five finishes and 12 top-10s in 14 races en route to winning the championship in the K&N Pro Series East, a feeder circuit to NASCAR's national-level touring .

I AM NASCAR | SEASON 2: EPISODE 12 Dalanda Ouendeno, Breanna O'leary and Brehanna Daniels join Brandon Marshall, Channing Crowder and Dion “Rocko” Williams on this week's episode of I Am Nascar. These women are the first wave of female pit crew members in Nascar. Channing opens up the conversation by asking the women if it took time for the men in the pit crew to get adjusted to seeing women do the job beside them. Breanna answers by saying that she always looked at herself as a pit crew member since the beginning. She wanted to seize the opportunity that was presented to her. She realized that organizations can't grow when there is no diversity and inclusion. Brehanna adds that without the help of the Nascar Drive for Diversity Program, they wouldn't be in this position. The women begin to tell their individual stories on how they were introduced into the sport and how they became a part of the pit crew. Brehanna talks about the tryout and mentioned how Breanna was also there with her. She explains how they were the only girls that were focused during the tryout, and Brehanna knew they had a shot at the job because of that. There were more than twenty girls at the try out, and only ten were going to get picked to come back. After the tryout, Brehanna was heading home on a plane and received a call from the coach. The coach explained how he really shouldn't be telling her this news right now but couldn't wait while extending the invitation for her to come back and be a professional pit crew member. Brehanna shifts the conversation to talk about the fellow men that she works with in the pit crew. She says the “guys be hating”. She continues to say that a lot of the guys can't stand that they can do the job just as good as they can. Brandon asks Dalanda why she ended up picking West Virginia to play soccer with all the different offers she had on the table. Dalanda says how big their soccer program is and they had top of the line facilities. Dalanda ended up transferring to Miami because she felt it was time to try it out. Channing asks if the male pit crew members get jealous when the cameras are on the female pit crew members. Brehanna quickly answers and talks about how common it is for them to get jealous. Breanna mentions that “we didn't ask for this”, referring to the cameras and the attention that the media brings. Breanna explains how difficult it is for them just trying to find a bathroom. She explains how they usually just “hold it” until the end of the race because it is very difficult with their suits. The group starts to laugh together at this while Brehanna explains how disgusting the porter potties are and what she will typically see in the morning if she decides to use one. Brehanna talks about how she lost her mom to breast cancer when she was in high school. She would spend a lot of time doing her everyday activities around her mom at the house so she can be close to her. While doing her homework one night, she heard a difference in her mom's breathing and it concerned her. Brehanna ended up hearing her mom take her last breath. She talks about how she uses her mom's passing as motivation because her mom always believed in her and knew she would do something special in life. Brehanna says her mom's message to the group would be to keep spreading positivity, you guys are doing a great job. She adds by saying her mom would tell her how proud she is. Gracie Trotter became the first female to ever win an ARCA sanctioned event earlier this season, but there’s much more that meets the eye with this third generation racer. Trotter joins Davey (7:40) to discuss her upbringing in racing, including her father’s journey to North Carolina from Texas at age 21 and working on his go-kart in his mother’s living room. She recalls an evening at the track where being the trophy girl wound up sparking her interest in driving instead, as well as when her father spun his seven-year-old daughter out while karting. Trotter was selected as a part of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity class in 2019 and just finished up another season competing for Rev Racing in late models, as well as her rookie campaign with Bill McAnally Racing in the ARCA Menards Series West. Her victory at The Bullring in Las Vegas was historic, and came in the same month as her late model victory at Hickory. Trotter details the two wins, and why sharing the Victory Lane experienced with her father meant the world to them both. Plus, the trials and tribulations of being a female in racing, life as a Toyota development driver, her love of Whataburger and reminiscing on when she couldn’t test a car because she was too short to reach the pedals (yes, really). EPISODE 6: Despite the challenges associated with autism, there are so many individuals on the spectrum that are inspiring us all and proving that challenges can indeed be overcome. One such individual is Armani Williams. He was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of two-years-old and was considered nonverbal. He is now the first openly diagnosed autistic NASCAR driver. To date, Armani has 18 wins and two championships. Autism is a disorder that is characteristically marked by difficulty focusing on and processing different stimuli and tasks simultaneously, in addition to complications with communication. These are two key skills for any race car driver. Initially, it seemed that Armani’s dream of becoming a professional NASCAR driver was impossible. When he was eight-years-old, Armani began competing in go-kart racing, then bandolero styles vehicles, and quickly progressed to professional series. He raced in the ARCA Truck Pro Series in 2016, signing with SPEAR MotorSports. He broke records by becoming the highest finishing African American in a series race and the highest finishing African American in the series championship. The same year, Armani was invited to compete in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Combine and returned to the competition for a second year in a row. 2017 saw Armani move up to a higher level of competition to hone his skills as a race car driver and gain confidence in the former NASCAR Canadian Tires Series now the NASCAR Pinty’s Series of Canada. He was coached by the team general manager and driver Joey McColm, along with NASCAR Monster Energy Cup driver D.J. Kennington. His personal diagnosis with autism and success on the track inspires his philanthropy off the track. In 2015, Armani and his family established the Armani Williams Race 4 Autism Foundation to raise awareness and promote research. He continues to speak to audiences and make appearances to local communities during race week to drive action and hope. Some may have viewed Armani’s dream of becoming a professional NASCAR driver impossible. But Armani didn’t accept impossible, and his great support system has made Armani’s future, both on and off the track, both remarkable and bright.
