Tampa Bay is a pro sports town. You've got the Lightning for Hockey, Buccaneers for Football, and the Rays for baseball. That attracts folks for hundreds of games in the area this year. But there's another huge presence: the numbers are in for the first IndyCar Series broadcast of the season for the audience that watched Alex Palou and Josef Newgarden battle on the streets of St. Petersburg's waterfront. 1.4 million viewers watched, a steep increase from last year's race. And if you were anywhere near downtown St. Pete at the start of March, you probably heard it, as the streets alongside the marina were transformed into a racetrack for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. For this episode, Florida Matters takes you to the Grand Prix, where motor racing fans talk about what keeps them coming back. And you'll hear what drivers like Hailie Deegan and Lochie Hughes think about racing in St. Pete. And- we talk with Chris Steinocher, President and CEO at St Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission's Claire Lessinger, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Local Organizing Committee hosting the Women's Final Four. They share insights into what it takes to bring marquee events to Tampa Bay, and how they help power the area's economy.

While men have taken the lion's share of media attention across motorsport, there have been women who would gain substantial coverages. From Brittany Force to Hailie Deegan, women in motorsport have hit sport headlines on various networks and modalities. While coverage of women in motorsport may be more positive, in terms of quantity and perception (driver talent versus overt sexism, etc.), has academia had any sort of focus on women in motorsport? The purpose of the current literature review is to summarize the current academic literature across two repositories (EBSCO Host & Google Scholar) to gain a broader understanding of this academic realm of inquiry. Various search term including Women in Racing and variants were included in the search. Initial results suggest that women in motorsport are often a part of academic research, but are less so the main focus. Using the PRISMA methodology, articles were selected from relevant criteria and reduced from a larger sample. Methods and themes from articles will be discussed. Conor Daly prepares for his next challenge behind the wheel on this week's episode of Speed Street. He joins co-host Chase Holden to discuss his upcoming NASCAR Truck race at Homestead and the challenges he's facing in a grueling market for open seats in 2025. The guys also discuss the recent IndyCar test at Iowa Speedway as well as the Indianapolis Road Course test for 2025's IndyNXT roster. Conor spent the past weekend watching racing and was disappointed with the outcome of the Formula One United States Grand Prix. He weighs in on the differences between IndyCar and Formula One track limits and how the race may have played out differently if the stewards didn't have to get involved. Hailie Deegan joins the show to discuss her highly publicized transition from the NASCAR world to the IndyNXT paddock. Hailie explains that after her last NASCAR Xfinity event, she began to ponder entering the open wheel world and went to the IndyCar event at Iowa Speedway to take in the series firsthand. She compares the amount of track time she's had so far in preparing for her first IndyNXT start to her past four seasons spent in NASCAR, which reveals a major challenge for developing racers in the stock car world. Conor and Hailie discuss the use of iRacing in helping to ease the growing pains that come with switching types of race cars, as well as the affordability of racing in IndyNXT versus a NASCAR Truck. 21+ and present in North Carolina. There were IndyCars on track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last week for a hybrid system test, and Conor Daly was again behind the wheel of a Juncos Hollinger Racing Dallara participating. He checks into Speed Street to fill co-host Chase Holden and listeners in on what unfolded in the test, which was the first time a lot of drivers got to try the new hybrid cars out at the legendary oval. Conor explains with the newly added weight of the hybrid system, the cars are slow in comparison to previous years, but it's still too early to make a prediction of how next year's Month of May will be. The guys also dig into other big news items in the IndyCar world including more details being revealed about the Arlington Street Race, Fox beginning promotion of the 2025 Indy 500 and Hailie Deegan making the jump from the NASCAR world to run IndyNXT full time.Conor's former Ed Carpenter Racing teammate Rinus VeeKay joins the show to chat about his last minute hire to drive for Dale Coyne at the recent IMS hybrid test. Rinus explains that although he had recently been relieved of his driving duties at ECR, he still thought it would be good to show up at the IMS test and try to schedule some meetings with potential new teams, which led to him getting in the Coyne car for some laps. Having spent a lot of time at ECR with Rinus, Conor was curious to what factors may have contributed to the team's struggles in recent years, despite driver effort. The guys also fielded questions from social media listeners, who wanted to know what the dynamic between Conor and Rinus was like as teammates and what the team was like after Conor left. Rinus explains that one of the main reasons he ended up making the jump from the European karting ranks to the Road to Indy was the scholarship system in place, which helped get him into the IndyNXT ranks and in front of IndyCar team owners. They also discussed what may be on the horizon for Rinus, to which he is optimistic he will be back in IndyCar full time.
Tonight, Curt and Kevin recap IndyCar hybrid testing, and Petit Le Mans! They talk about how the Hybrid engine performed during testing, and Alexander Rossi's new position at Ed Carpenter. They also talk about Rinus Veekay testing instead of Sting Ray Robb. They also talk about Grosjean's future at Juncos, and his comment on rising costs with the hybrid. Later, they talk about Hailie Deegan moving to HMD Motorsports in the Indy NXT series. They talk about how popular she is on social media and how much exposure she'll bring to Indy NXT. They also talk about some other additions to Indy NXT. To round out the first hour, Kevin previews hour two. In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt break down the Arlington Grand Prix layout, and the big event Roger Penske did with the Cowboys and Rangers to promote the event last week. They also talk about the possibility of racing in Mexico. They also answer listener questions. Later, Kevin and Curt answer some listener questions, including which ovals are most likely to return to the schedule, and how enjoyable Petit Le Mans was this year. To end the show, Kevin recaps what they missed, and talks about Jackson Lee's race over the weekend. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As if we haven't had enough of it, more controversy this week at the Roval as NASCAR Xfinity and Cup teams alike tried to punch their ticket to the Round of 8! Xfinity saw a heartbreaking and controversial ending, where Parker Kligerman saw his race win slip away by literal milliseconds. On the Cup side, Alex Bowman and Tyler Reddick put in notable drives to secure their spots, only for Alex Bowman to get DQ'd as he makes way for Joey Logano in the Ro8! We also talk the next Spygate (NASCAR Edition), playoff picture heading to Las Vegas, and Hailie Deegan's new landing spot in racing!

They also talk about the success of the race from Scott Borchetta, avoiding the threat of rain from Hurricane Francine, and the possibility of doing the oval and street course race sometime in the future. They also talk about this season's oval “revival” and Will Power having an issue with his belts, ultimately taking him out early of championship contention. Later in the first hour of the show, Kevin talks to Curt to preview the upcoming IMSA race and BC39 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and answer questions from Twitter. They also talk about the recent pictures swarming around social media of Logan Sargeant and Hailie Deegan out and about in Nashville Superspeedway, possibly for their respective futures. To start the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk more about the silly season with Callum Ilott signing with Prema Racing for 2025, while rumor is that F2 driver and Ferrari prodigy Robert Shwartzman could be the lead candidate for the second seat, along with Alexander Rossi. They talk about the possibility of a package deal that would send Rossi and Sting Ray Robb to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, and the potential of Hy-Vee possibly going to A.J. Foyt Enterprises. They also talk about Jamie Chadwick running a potential “6-8 races” for next season and how the rotation of Dale Coyne Racing drivers of Jack Harvey, Hunter McElrea, and Toby Sowery could fit and where the new Indy NXT Champion, Louis Foster could land. Later in the second hour program, Kevin and Curt answer more questions on Twitter with more silly season rumors in the paddock and in the TV booth for next year. Then to wrap up another addition of the show, Kevin talks briefly about the recent FBI investigation at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing shop in Zionsville. Chicago, for the second straight year, had its NASCAR street race, a neat idea, if there ever was one, dampened by rain. Alex Bowman made it memorable, breaking his 80-race NASCAR Cup Series winless streak in a timed finish – an idea that NASCAR might want to try again, incidentally. Rod Mullins joins the podcast to break down the weekend on the mean streets of Chicago. The show also goes in depth on Hailie Deegan's bad breakup with her Xfinity Series team, and the latest on NHRA legend John Force.
Kenny Wallace gives his thoughts on Hailie Deegan and also gives a quick tour of his race shop. #racing #kennywallace #nascar #hailiedeegan Brought to you by JEGS! Doug and Dan hear Devin's dispatches from the grounds of Nashville Superspeedway, including his view of all of the late race, fuel-saving drama, record-overtime, and Logano's Playoff buster. They also talk Silly Season rumors in Cup and Xfinity, the Xfinity and Trucks Playoffs, a sneaky short Chicago race, and, Almirola v. Wallace, Hailie Deegan's rookie turn.
Hosts Will Porter and Jacob Simpson of The Scoring Pylon delve into an unprecedented weekend at Nashville Super Speedway, marked by a record-setting five overtime restarts. They discuss the implications of Joey Logano's win on playoff standings, safety and procedural nuances of NASCAR overtime, and the heatwave's impact on drivers. Attention is given to the escalating rivalry between Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson, with comparisons drawn to Max Verstappen's controversial tactics in Formula 1. The future of RCR, as well as the career prospects of Kyle Busch and Hailie Deegan, are also analyzed. As the duo wraps up, they speculate on Shane Van Gisbergen's chances at the upcoming Chicago Street Race and reflect on enhancements to the fan experience. 00:00 Introduction 01:01 Weekend Recap: Nashville Superspeedway 02:23 Heat Wave Challenges 11:16 Cool Suit Technology in Racing 13:07 NASCAR Race Scheduling Issues 22:25 Xfinity Race Highlights 25:25 Hailie Deegan's Replacement Controversy 36:33 Joey Logano's Victory 42:57 Notable Drivers and Their Strategies 44:06 Kyle Busch's Strategy and Challenges 45:14 The Wreck and Its Aftermath 50:02 NASCAR's Inconsistent Rules 58:46 RCR's Struggles 01:07:10 Alternate Playoff Scenarios 01:19:18 Overtime Procedures Debate 01:24:19 Aggressive Racing and Overtime Chaos 01:28:57 The Hamlin-Larson Rivalry 01:38:51 F1 Drama and Racing Etiquette 01:56:52 NASCAR Overtime and Race Grades 01:59:25 Final Thoughts and Outro --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/scoringpylonpod/message
