In this flashback episode, I talk with Jacqueline Garcia of Therapy Lux. Jacqueline opens up about her personal journey as a therapist in private practice, navigating social media, and the importance of authenticity and self-discovery.Jackie shares some of her struggles in her personal and professional life, specifically about immigrating from Mexico to the United States at 12 years old, and how she has fully embraced her Latina heritage. Here are 3 key takeaways from this episode:Embrace your authenticity on social media: Jacqueline shares her experience of showing up authentically on social media as a therapist and how it made a significant difference in connecting with clients and building a supportive community. Highlighting your personality and being true to yourself can have a powerful impact on your practice.Find grace in the private practice journey: Starting a private practice can be a scary transition, filled with ups and downs. Jacqueline advises giving yourself grace and space to feel your emotions throughout this process. Remember, everyone's journey is different, and it's important to acknowledge and honor your own path. Jacqueline brings attention to the discrimination faced by individuals who do not speak a language perfectly. She emphasizes that this discrimination is often masked by expectations of perfection, while many people in our country only speak one language and make little effort to learn another. As therapists, we have a unique opportunity to challenge these biases and advocate for inclusivity and understanding.Use slower periods for self-reflection and growth: When facing slower periods in your practice, rather than panicking or doubting your success, embrace the opportunity for self-reflection and evaluation. Take this time to assess your niche, offerings, and personal alignment. Remember, slower periods can be a valuable chance for growth and perspective shift.Note from Jackie: My name is Jacqueline Garcia, and I am a bilingual, Spanish-speaking Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 7 years of experience working with children, teens, adults, and families. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California State of San Bernardino. After completing my B.A., I attended California State University of Fullerton where I earned my Master's Degree in Social Work. My clinical experiences range from mental health outpatient programs, non-profit organizations, field-based community mental health, and private practice. I grew up in Tijuana, Baja California until I was 12 years old. My parents migrated to the U.S. to pursue a better life for me and my siblings. As many of you know, middle school years can be difficult, to say the least. As a teen, I struggled adjusting to a new culture, new language, new friends, new trends, you name it! However, these transformative years made an impact in my life and led me to the path of becoming a therapist.Jackie's Website: Therapylux.orgJackie's Instagram: instagram.com/therapylux–––––––––––––––––––––***This episode is the 2nd of 10 episodes that All Things Private Practice is re-releasing for 2025. Helping Your Teen Pick the Right Major and Career with Deborah Allen

College and Career Clarity

In this episode Lisa and Deborah discuss:How to guide your teen through college and career discernment. The crucial role self-awareness through ongoing reflection and family conversations.Types of real-world experiences that allow teens to explore interests and develop skills. Supporting, not leading, your teen through their journey of building professional connections and independence. Key Takeaways: No matter how many resources your student's school has, work still needs to be done at the family level, especially around self-awareness. “Knowing thyself” is the purpose of education. It is about more than just a final destination; it is rather the accumulation of wisdom, truth, and beauty. Integrate deeper questions into the regular rhythms of life.Invite your teen to have curiosity conversations with those in the fields they are interested in. This will help them develop their imagination and identify potential avenues for internships and other networking opportunities. Encourage your teen to explore opportunities they are interested in. They might like it, they might not, and that's fine! Self-awareness is not a linear discovery process. Teach your teen to see the throughline of what they enjoy and who they are. No matter how many occupations they may have, who they are and how they show up does not change.  “Helping students understand that part of this discernment process and knowing who they are is not done in isolation. They need to look to the wise elders around them that can speak truth and can give them some perspective.” – Deborah AllenAbout Deborah Allen: Deborah Allen has been in education as both parent and professional for over 25 years. Her broad experience includes serving as a humanities instructor at both the high school and collegiate level, thesis coach, academic and career adviser, creating college counseling departments for private and public classical schools, and serving as a consultant for the Society for Classical Learning. Deborah, founder of Athena College and Vocational Coaching, is a certified college counselor through NACCAP, who holds a BA in Communications from University of Florida, an MA in Humanities from California State, and a Professional Certification in Human Resource Development from University of Georgia, with post-graduate work at University of Dallas. She is a Highlands Battery Ability consultant. Deborah and her family currently reside in Annapolis. Butterfly Knives, Billy Clubs and Guns on the Beach in Hawai'i with Alan Beck, JD, RTKBA 2a Attorney

The Republican Professor

Our guest today defends the most vulnerable people, often at his own substantial cost, from bureaucrats who use the police power of the state to abuse Americans. Does the Second Amendment protect the right to keep and bear non-lethal arms? If it protects the right to keep and bear lethal arms for self-defense, a fortiori, it would seem so. Butterfly knives can be used for self-defense without deploying the blade, and so can baseball bats be used for lawful purposes, including self-defense. Yet Democratic states like Hawai'i, California, Rhode Island have criminalized this innocent conduct, primarily using its prosecutorial discretion to enforce only against the most vulnerable, low income residents of those states, and Democrats have done so for decades prior to enough Republican judicial appointees to make a difference in turning this tide. Mr. Alan Beck sues Hawai'i for infringement of the rights of American Samoans, Green Card holders, and Hawai'ian residents and wins. As a result of his cases on behalf of low income, vulnerable people, anti-Second-Amendment laws in several states have come to an end. His cases have overturned California and Hawai'ian laws that are selectively enforced against low income people bearing billy clubs for self-defense, butterfly knives and stun guns, as well as ensured open carry in the 9th Circuit Democratic strongholds such as the island county of Hawai'i (Big Island). He has also won the right to carry guns on beaches in Maui. Here are links to some of his cases: Judge Benitez (US District Court, So Cal)'s reasoning for striking down California State's criminalization of the innocent conduct of simple possession of billy clubs and batons. https://assets.nationbuilder.com/firearmspolicycoalition/pages/5882/attachments/original/1710186934/2024.03.11_069_OPINION.pdf?1710186934 Teter v. She was a keynote speaker on AI ethics, data privacy, real-world applications, and AI education topics at the UN, UK Parliament, California State, and leading tech conferences such as the MIT conference and VentureBeat."Students ask, 'Why do I have to study AI ethics? Why can't I just jump into how do I build this model?' If you imagine AI as a very powerful tool, there is no difference between teaching building AI tools from teaching people how to use a weapon. If you ever take any weapon training classes, the first thing people teach you is safety, which is really understanding how the weapon works and how much impact both on the positive and negative side to people surround you. Plagued by years of abuse allegations, the California Department of Juvenile Justice and the youth facilities it ran, were shut down earlier this summer. Criminal justice reform advocates considered the closures a victory, but now have other concerns. They contend most relocated youth are being moved into juvenile hall facilities that were not designed for long-term detentions and that lack adequate rehabilitation programs and resources. County probation chiefs have also raised concerns that kids who left for state facilities with no history of drug problems or gang affiliations are returning to their home counties with both, raising questions about the conditions within the waning days of state facilities.
