Have they stopped with the whole ‘Space War on Terror' and does Earth look less like a poor Xbox game background? In Borderland, the mission's off to a bad start as Orion slavers abduct a lot of the crew.   Welcome to Episode 1 of Summer 2024 Today, we're going to walk the DeSoto Nature  & Spillway Trail.  It's really two trails in one. Let's first begin our walk of the DeSoto Nature Trail, which is about 1.2 miles in total. We're going to walk the first leg of this trail today and in our next episode we'll finish the back side of the DeSoto Nature Trail. After that we'll walk the Spillway Trail which is about 3/4 of a mile. These two trails comprise one of my favorite places to walk/hike inside Hot Springs Village. It takes you over the DeSoto Dam and past the spillway if you walk both trails (which I highly recommend). The first part has an often steep incline through the woods, sure to get your heart-rate up. At the top you reach one side of the dam offering a nice reprieve from the climb. From the dam is a terrific view of the lake and the houses along the shore. Then when you reach the other side you'll be on the spillway side, where you can sit a spell and catch your breath before you descend down the other side of the trail, which follows the downward path of the spillway. Nearby you'll find the Hot Springs Village Dog Park and Bocce Ball Courts (pronounced bah-chee). In Oregon, the natural world doesn't just inspire awe -- it gives a touch of the sublime. In the words of one guide, it's "timeless...important for the soul of humankind." And today, we're immersing ourselves in those sublime experiences along the Central Nature Trail in Oregon! Follow along as we snowshoe to the top of Watchman Peak, for the best view over Crater Lake in the park – “like a sapphire embedded in the Earth”, as Aaron describes it. It's exposed, it's hair-raising and it's worth every shaky step.  After that we head to Bend, one of Oregon's premier adventure towns, for some sunset paddling along the Deschutes River surrounded by thousands of swallows, baby ospreys and a surprise visit from Oregon's state animal.  Then it's time to head underground for a spine-chilling 1000-foot descent into a lava tube, formed by a “River of Fire” over 7,000 years ago. We crawl through 18-inch-wide cracks, turn off our head lamps to experience true darkness and marvel at the geologic forces that could create this uniquely beautiful landscape.  We finish at the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Reservation for some “river therapy” and a fly-fishing lesson from a native guide. We learn about conserving native first foods, experience some river therapy and even catch a fish. Through it all, we're going to explore the wonder and awe of the natural world in all its forms, from mile-high views to quiet moments listening to birdsong on the river.  CONNECT Interested in visiting Oregon and seeing the Central Nature Trail for yourself? Wood you like to go for a hike with us? Today we are discussing The Skull Hollow Nature Trail in Oolagah, Oklahoma. The Skull Hollow Nature Trail in Oolagah is considered an easy route, it takes an average of 27 min to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and running, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are March through April. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. Oologah Lake provides a great getaway for fishing, boating, picnicking, camping or just drifting over the sky blue waters. Plenty of wide stretches of water, perfect for catching the wind, make it one of the most popular lakes in the area for sailing and catching catfish. The forested hills around the lake provide excellent hunting opportunities. The Oologah Public Hunting Area comprises almost 13,000 acres of easily accessible land managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. It provides excellent hunting for quail, squirrel, rabbit, deer and waterfowl. Eleven public use areas scattered around the lake offer a variety of facilities making it easy to find something that's just right for you. Recreation opportunities include a swimming beach, mountain biking, marina, RV and tent camping, picnic tables and a playground. On the east side of the lake, the Will Rogers Country Centennial Trail winds around the shore from the Spillway to Blue Creek Park, totaling 18 miles. This journey can be enjoyed by hiking or horseback riding. Horse rental is not available, so bring your own horse and enjoy the trails. News Story from News 9. In 2018, Brad Moretz and Brenda Speckmann of Appalachian Ski Mountain initiated the Round-Up for the Middle Fork Greenway - a way to engage businesses in a month-long fundraiser for the up-and-coming Greenway project. That first year was a success, and since then, community businesses and individuals have rallied behind the Round-Up for the Middle Fork Greenway to raise nearly $700K. This money has leveraged over $5.5 million in state grants and Tourism Development Authority funding for land acquisition, trail construction, trailhead development, design, engineering, permitting, and feasibility studies. The funding has also helped protect 47 acres of land along the greenway, including pocket parks, trailheads, river access, and trail. This year's Round-Up for the Greenway proceeds will go toward constructing Boone Gorge Park. On this week's Mind Your Business, we talk with Wendy Patoprsty, Director of the Middle Fork Greenway for Blue Ridge Conservancy. She provides an update on new and future construction along the corridor, while also sharing specific information on how businesses can participate in this year's round-up.Mind your Business is produced weekly by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. “You really can't help but feel it when you put in a little effort to get a little higher, to get to another vantage point. It makes you feel a sense of being placed in this time and space in a different way. That's the sublime, a timeless element that is beyond what we can conceive. It's so important for the soul of humankind in the future of this landscape, and the future of humanity.”  – Nathan Dwyer, Main Street Tours (from the top of Crater Lake National Park) Join us on the Central Nature Trail for the third part of our documentary road trip, following award-winning travel writer Aaron Millar from the top of Crater Lake National Park to the Columbia River Gorge. We begin snowshoeing to the top of Watchman Peak, for the best view over Crater Lake in the park – “like a sapphire embedded in the Earth”, as Aaron describes it. We learn of conserving native first foods, experience some river therapy and Aaron catches his first fish.Through it all, we're going to explore the wonder and awe of the natural world in all its forms, from mile-high views to quiet moments listening to birdsong on the river. We'll discover why the natural world for Oregonians inspires more than just gasps and awe, it inspires care and stewardship of the land. It inspires the sublime and we're going to find plenty of that. Here at MZD we talk all the time about the beautiful healing powers of Nature and the importance of connecting with Nature for mindfulness and personal growth… Well today we're going to take you on a beautiful Nature trail in Letchworth State park about an hour south of Rochester, New York. Shaped like an ant from a bird's eye view, this trail offers a first-of-its-kind experience in nature designed for visitors on the autism spectrum – but appropriate and enjoyable for all abilities and ages. It is designed to encourage inclusivity and skill-building, combat isolation, and provide a connection to the natural world in a deep nature setting that is welcoming to all. We had a delightful conversation with Gail Serventi, who along with co-founders Susan Hernstein and Loren Penman tirelessly nurtured the ANT to life as it' three “aunties” and champions in planning, fundraising and seeing it through to completion. What makes this trail so unique is that it was specifically designed with those on the Autism Spectrum (ASD) in mind. It is no secret that Nature has been clinically proven to have a powerful effect on the mind, body and spirit, and the ANT has taken full advantage of her natural and holistic benefits. A little more information about autism, and how this trail benefits not only those on the spectrum, but the neurotypical as well. It is fascinating stuff, bringing hope and practical application to a world of beautiful human beings who are struggling to be heard and understood. Perhaps the first introduction to autism many of us had was through the movie “Rainman” starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, where Cruise, who plays a wheeler-dealer, meets his older brother, played by Hoffman, who is an autistic-savant living his life in a mental institution. What follows is a heart-warming story where two very different worlds collide on a cross-country trip that will change their lives forever. It is said that this breakthrough Hollywood film established a new standard for the realistic representation of autism. It is important to understand that not all individuals on the spectrum are savants who demonstrate extraordinary abilities with math and memory. But classic autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges with social communication, and by restricted and repetitive behaviors. Disrupted routines and things such as loud noises, certain foods and even textures can rapidly bring about aggression, agitation and an intense meltdown to those with autism. The good news is, Nature has been shown to have a beautiful, calming affect on these individuals. Thus, the significance and beauty of the ANT, (Autism Nature Trail). So now with that in mind, on to today's show. Just a heads up… As you probably know, sometimes in the world of podcasting, (as with life in general), “schtuff” happens, and we lost the first minute or so of our introduction with Gail Serventi, so we'll just dive right in to how the Autism Nature Trail got started. Come on in…

Although Audubon found white-tailed deer to be common on the island, by the late 1800's deer were wiped out here. Now, except for the odd coyote or raccoon, the wildlife is generally composed of insects, reptiles, and amphibians. If you look closely, the lagoon teems with butterflies, dragonflies, robber flies, and a breathtaking variety of brilliantly colored insects. Some of these are among the smallest of their kind in the world. Others have adapted to the salinity of the lagoon and its marshes and are found nowhere else except in these special places. You will find many of these insects and other wildlife along the East End Lagoon Nature Trail. The flowers that bloom along the Trail attract  clouds of butterflies as well as the dragonflies that prey on the butterflies. The key to uncovering the wildlife along the trail is to walk quietly and to look very, very closely at what is around you.Eastern Pygmy-BlueSome of the smallest butterflies are the toughest! The eastern pygmy-blue (Brephidium pseudofea) is one of the smallest butterflies in the world, yet it proliferates here in the salt marsh. This butterfly lays its eggs on Salicornia and Batis, plants that only live in the most saline soils.Seaside DragonletThe Seaside Dragonlet (Erythrodiplax berenice) is the only dragonfly in the Western Hemisphere that can breed in seawater. The lagoon is a perfect place for this dragonlet, and it can be seen commonly in warmer months.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/jrshaw409)

During this month celebrating Women's History, we want to focus on the important role Maxine Johnston played in the fight to preserve the Big Thicket, the nation's first (alongside Big Cypress) National Preserve and one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. In our travels, we have always been impressed by the tenacity and dedication of so many volunteers and citizen groups - true democracy in action. We all owe them so much. One such citizen and conservationist champion is Maxine Johnston, who was recently featured in a National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) blog post: These 10 National Parks Wouldn't Exist Without Women. Thanks to Shannon Harris from KVLU Public Radio in Beaumont, TX, who interviewed Maxine Johnston in late 2019, we are able to share an excerpt of Maxine Johnston speaking about her involvement. The episode also features our conversation with the very helpful Ranger we met at the Visitor Center, who reviewed our Junior Ranger badges (you can hear us all take the oath together!) and spoke to us about forest restoration, longleaf pines, and the Kirby Nature Trail. We are grateful to Shelly Vitanza from Lamar University for allowing us to use photos from Lamar University tribute on the occasion of Maxine being selected as the Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal for Lamar University, where she spent more than three decades as a research librarian and then library director. She was honored both for her contributions to the university as well as her dedication and success as a conservation advocate. In fact, today at 93 years young, her LinkedIn profile lists her occupation as “Conservation Gadfly.” We are so thankful for gadflies like Maxine Johnston.
