A typical songbird belts out its song between 1,000 and 2,500 times per day. Even though most bird songs last only a few seconds, that's a lot of warbling! A Yellowhammer, a European bunting, may sing over 3,000 times a day. But the Yellowhammer doesn't even come close to the North American record-holder, this Red-eyed Vireo. One such vireo delivered its song over 22,000 times in 10 hours!More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. It's winter in North America — a good time to head for the subtropical realms of South Florida and listen to the region's birds, such as the secretive Mangrove Cuckoo pictured here. Rarely seen, it sings sporadically in winter. When it does, you're sure to take notice. A sweeter voice belongs to the Spot-breasted Oriole. Found in suburban neighborhoods, these birds were brought to Florida in the 1940s from Central America. And we can't forget the sharp-edged phrases of the White-eyed Vireo or the eerie cries of the Limpkin.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. The lack of leaves in this “see-through season” reveals aspects of the landscape otherwise obscured. For example, “Check out that nest!” I exclaimed to my friend, and we admired the small cup suspended between a Y in the sugar maple twigs. The placement of the nest, plus the few pale strips of paper from a bald-faced hornet nest woven among grass, bark, and pine needles, told me that it was likely built by a red-eyed vireo.
Comment, question, or idea for the podcast? Send us a Text Message! It's been a week in the Minnesota cannabis world, and Steve and Tanner are here to break it all down. The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) scheduled the first round of its Social Equity Preapproval Lottery… and then the District Court stepped in with a stay, temporarily halting the process. Next step, Minnesota Court of Appeals.Meanwhile, Minneapolis and Duluth are busy considering cannabis ordinances, each putting their own spin on what regulation should look like for retailers and parks. On the business side, things aren't much smoother. Employees at Vireo are on the brink of a strike after slow-moving contract negotiations with UFCW Local 1189, threatening to throw half of the state's medical cannabis program into disarray. And in slightly lighter news, a study from the University of Minnesota shows that students are trading heavy drinking for cannabis. Call it progress? This week's episode also features an interview with Sean Paul Kehren of North Star Law Group. Sean shares stories about growing up in Pine City, his path to becoming a lawyer, and what's driven him to navigate Minnesota's cannabis legal landscape. Quick note: North Star's lawsuit against OCM hadn't been filed yet when we recorded this conversation. To unwind, we sample Modist Brewing's new Melt Pop's flavors—Citrus Punch and Sangria Ginger Ale—and Tanner treats us to Big Cat Hash's Strawberry Pie for another Terp Tasting. As always, we end with a high note, trying to find some joy in the everlasting and ever growing chaos.Production Note: Most of this episode was recorded before the court's decision on Monday. Even so, the conversations are still relevant—maybe even more so. We'll be back later this week with more thoughts on that ruling.Filmed and Recorded at the Dabbler Depot Studio in St. PaulLinks from the Show:OCM Lawsuit Decision: https://www.startribune.com/minnesotas-first-lottery-for-cannabis-business-licenses-delayed-amid-litigation/601186596Minneapolis Feedback on Cannabis Ordinances: https://www.minneapolisparks.org/news/2024/11/18/minneapolis-park-and-recreation-board-opens-public-comment-period-for-draft-cannabis-and-tobacco-and-thc-policies/North Star Law Group: https://northstarlaw.com/cannabis/ (or email to sean@northstarlaw.com) Modist Melt Pop Citrus Punch: https://modistbrewing.com/drinks/melt-pop-citrus-punch/Modist Melt Pop Sangria Ginger Ale: https://modistbrewing.com/drinks/melt-pop-sangria-ginger-ale/Big Cat Hash: https://www.instagram.com/bigcathashThank You to Our Sponsors!North Star Law Group - https://northstarlaw.com/cannabis/Natural Harvest - http://minnesotacannabisseeds.com (Use code “NL10” for 10% off your order!)Union Bank and Trust - https://www.ubtmn.comSupport the show
n this episode we speak with Allan Strong and Margaret Fowle about the importance of riparian areas for birds, and how riparian forest restoration practitioners can best support bird populations. Allan is a professor in the wildlife biology program in The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at UVM. His research focuses on bird conservation and he currently serves as Chair of Vermont's Endangered Species Committee. Margaret Fowle is a senior conservation biologist with Audubon Vermont; her work includes a variety of bird conservation projects that range from single species recovery and monitoring projects to habitat restoration on public and private lands. There are many birds in the region that can be found in riparian areas, including a few that are endangered or of conservation concern. Birds in this category include bald eagles (which are listed as endangered in Vermont, though no longer federally), who build their nests in trees along rivers and on lakeshores. Great blue heron, American black duck, red-shouldered hawk, who all rely on riparian habitat, are listed by Vermont as species of “greatest conservation need.” Riparian areas also provide nesting habitat for more common birds like bank swallows or belted kingfishers, who then use the waterways to find food. Listen all the way to the end to hear us try Professor Strong's famous turkey call! The bird featured in this episode was the Yellow-throated Vireo. It was recorded by Martin St-Michel on May 18, 2014 at the George Montgomery Sanctuary in Brome-Missisquoi, Québec The song was downloaded from xeno-canto.org.This project has been funded wholly or in part by the United States Environmental Protection Agency under assistance agreement (LC00A00695-0) to NEIWPCC in partnership with the Lake Champlain Basin Program.
How to think about the contradictory figure of R. Murray Schafer? A renegade scholar who used sound technology to create an entirely new field of study, even as he devalued the very tools of its trade. A gifted composer who claimed a sincere appreciation for indigenous cultures, yet one who, perhaps, could only love them on his own terms, only as they fit into his sweeping vision for Canadian music. An erudite reader with a deep knowledge of world cultures, who nevertheless dismissed Canada's most multicultural areas as less than truly Canadian. And a man, who despite a bomb-throwing persona on the page, is described by those who knew him as a kind and generous person. Today we speak to Jonathan Sterne, Mitchell Akiyama, and Hildegard Westerkamp to learn the critiques and contradictions of Schafer. Perhaps the greatest testament to his lasting legacy is the fact that we aren't done arguing with him. Works discussed in this episode: Jonathan Sterne's first book, The Audible Past, includes critiques of Schafer's work, especially his concept of schizophonia. His chapter “Soundscape, Landscape, Escape” (PDF, in the edited volume Soundscapes of the Urban Past) traces the intellectual and audiophile histories of Schafer's term soundscape. Listen, a short film on Schafer directed by David New, includes Shafer's claim that recorded sounds are not “real sound.” Hildegard Westerkamp's Kits Beach Sound Walk presents a subtler way of thinking about “schizophonic” sounds. Her chapter “The Disruptive Nature of Listening: Today, Yesterday, Tomorrow” (in the edited volume Sound Media Ecology) reexamines the World Soundscape Project through the political lenses of the 1970s and today. An episode of the CBC radio program “Soundscapes of Canada” is available at the Canadian Music Centre's music library. Rafael de Oliveira, Patrícia Lima, and Alexsander Duarte‘s interview with Schafer in Corfu, Greece is available on YouTube. Mitchell Akiyama's critique of the World Soundscape Project appears in “Unsettling the World Soundscape Project: Soundscapes of Canada and the Politics of Self-Recognition” (on the sound studies blog Sounding Out) and in his chapter “Nothing Connects Us but Imagined Sound” (in the edited volume Sound, Music, Ecology). The program notes (PDF) to Schafer's North/White contain his dismissal of urban Canadians (page 43). Dylan Robinson's book Hungry Listening opens with Schafer's insulting words about “Eskimo music” and contains a critique of the way Schafer appropriates indigenous music to create his “Canadian” music. The Vancouver Chamber Choir shares this performance of Schafer's “Miniwanka” complete with a side scrolling presentation of the graphic score. Today's music was by R. Murray Schafer, Vireo, and Blue the Fifth. Learn more about your ad choices. Warning 18+ Adult Content This time an intriguing and candid discussion on the topic of sex matters for women in menopause. Lyn talks to special guest Vireo Karvonen, a pleasure coach and advocate for women's sexual empowerment. Vireo shares her personal journey, highlighting experiences of shame, dissatisfaction, and transformation in her own relationships. KEY TAKEAWAYS Women in menopause should remember that being in ecstasy, pleasure, and joy is their natural way of being. Menopause and post-menopause can be a woman's prime time as they no longer experience the energy loss associated with menstruation. This period offers access to creativity and life force energy, making it the most powerful and potent time for women to tap into their gifts and potential. Challenge societal norms that promote unrealistic beauty standards by embracing natural beauty and diversity. Companies like Dove, which showcase real women in all shapes, sizes, and abilities, set a positive example that should be encouraged and supported. Women experiencing challenges around sex during menopause should seek support from a tribe of like-minded individuals and consider working with a pleasure coach or mentor. BEST MOMENTS "I remember literally laying in bed after we would make love and have sex. And there's a book by Paulo Coelho, he calls it 11 Minutes, and it was probably less than 11 minutes." "Yeah, tantra actually just means the way, and it's like the way home to yourself. Often when people think of tantra or tantric, they think of just sex, but it's really, it's way more than that." "Yeah, that's a big piece of what I do in our pleasure program. I have a pleasure, 12 months pleasure program for women and a big piece is with the mindset tool, we get to dissolve a lot of the shame." I've made it to Hector's Falls - it's not a very tall waterfall but it is very compelling to look at. The water flows off of a rectangular-shaped rock face, forming a thin silk-sheet like stream of water. Anywhere there is flowing water, there will be insects, and where there are insects to be fed on, there will be plenty of bird species. Ladies and Gentlemen, please take your seats in the auditorium as tonight's performance from the Goose Philharmonic is set to begin! Join us in welcoming composer Kain Ravaei to our first transatlantic episode (via the power of internet) as he takes us through both his work and the wider world of wonderful orchestra. Looking at how classical music can help conservation awareness, Kian's new piece "California Suite" addresses the unique qualities of a particular birdsong, from the flowing tune of Least Bell's Vireo to the rapid chirps of the California Black Rail. The pieces are modelled after the musical tradition of Baroque dance suites, such as those by J.S. Bach — but with a modern, conservation-minded twist. .....but we also use the opportunity of having a bona fide classical composer on the mics to answer some of the more musical questions we've been sent in the past, all of course with a goose spin, including recasting an entire orchestra with mother nature's maestros. White-eyed and red-eyed vireos are species of birds common to the eastern United States. They are known for building nests using materials like spider silk and caterpillar silk to attach their nests between tree branches.
I'm continuing my hike through Henhoeffer Park's East Trail, where a variety of eastern forest species such as Red-eyed Vireo, Ovenbird, and Pine Warbler have active territories. This was recorded early on a clear spring morning in the forest near White Deer Lake in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Siskiyou County, California. The recording starts about an hour before sunrise as the birds were just beginning to sing, and the frogs were winding down their nighttime chorus. You'll hear many different birds on this recording including Great Horned Owl, American Robin, Hammond's Flycatcher, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Mountain Chickadee, Cassin's Vireo, Western Tanager, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Hermit Warbler, Red-breasted Nuthatch and more. One sound I was particularly happy to capture is the booming wing sound of the Common Nighthawk, which is made by males as they dive at females during courtship. Thisrollicking song belongs to a Black-headed Grosbeak. Like most birds, the malegrosbeak begins singing in earnest a few days after reaching his traditionalnesting grounds in spring. And,like most birds, he sings frequently when trying to attract a mate. He'll singa bit less while he and his mate incubate eggs, but pick up the pace againafter the young hatch. By late summer, his singing will cease.Everwonder how much a bird sings in one day? Some patient observers have shown thata typical songbird belts out its song between 1,000 and 2,500 times per day.Even though most bird songs last only a few seconds, that's a lot of warbling!Onnights with a full moon, male Sage Thrashers have been known to proclaim theirlong-winded songs all night. But the North American record-holder may well bethe Red-eyed Vireo. One such vireo delivered its short song over 22,000 timesin ten hours!
One such vireo delivered its song over 22,000 times in ten hours!More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.

Sometimes all you need is to spend time in the great outdoors, where you soak up the sunshine, breathe fresh air, and commune with wildlife. Getting out for a walk in your local park or even birding alone or with your family can have a powerful impact on your brain. Birding by itself teaches us patience and gently coaxes us to be calm. It's a great opportunity to just zone out or have a little reflection and think calmly. Our guest for today will definitely agree on that matter. According to Ryan Dibala of Birding Man Adventures, birding is a great way for people to get outdoors and connect with nature. --- Listen to the podcast here: Birding with Benefits: How Nature Improves Your Well Being with Ryan Dibala Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. Today, I'd like to switch gears with you a little bit and I'd like to talk to you about birding. Now, this is a topic that we have yet to discuss on this particular podcast because it's a type of experience that people either know a lot about or know very little about. Some people get really, really into birding and some people just don't know much about it. But, in life, there's going to be a lot of experiences like that and it's good to be exposed to the large depth of experiences that there are out there. According to my guest today, Ryan Dibala of Birding Man Adventures, birding is a great way for people to get outdoors and connect into nature. --- Ryan, welcome to the program. Pleasure to be here, Steve. Thanks for having me. Oh, thank you so much. And, Ryan, tell me about your experience with birding. What made birding be the thing that you wanted to, first of all, do a lot of yourself and also bring to others? Right after college, I was working as a biologist on Santa Catalina Island and we were actually restoring bald eagles to the national park after a massive decline in numbers due to DDT, which I'm sure many people are familiar with DDT and what it did as it worked its way up the food chain, essentially with the raptors, like bald eagles, it depleted their egg shells of calcium so the nesting eagles would crush the eggs and then that would prevent successful recruitment ultimately. So we were actually involved in the direct manipulations of eggs and chicks on the island's eagles' nests so, of course, I was around other birders, I had my first pair of binoculars and a spotting scope and I was able to tune into some of the smaller birds on the island. That particular island has several different endemics that only are there, like many islands have, they have species that only can be found on those islands so I think I saw, it was a Hutton's Vireo, a Catalina Hutton's Vireo, and that might have been my gateway bird, I guess you could call it. A gateway bird, never heard it described that way before. So ever since that moment, I've really been paying attention to the birds around me. I found that it really slows me down, it helps me focus. We have these weapons of mass distraction in our pockets and we're always on them, these cell phones that distract us from the world and prevent us from tuning into what's in front of our eyes at the present moment. And so, as a result, we've seen a lot more ADD and NDD, nature deficit disorder, and realizing that going out into nature and slowing down and looking at the world as it is right around me, that's helped center me and relieve a lot of anxiety that has come about from the world that we live in with so much technology so that's one of many reasons that I continue to bird today. I can certainly go into more of the reasons why I think it's an amazing pursuit and something that more people should do. What does birding entail? Like if, let's say, these podcasts usually come out on Tuesdays and if you're listening in the middle of the week and someone says, “Alright, this sounds really interesting.

Hope you guys are having a wonderful week. Apologies for missing cannabis. Daily. Yesterday, we were hosting our seventh annual global FinTech awards. If you missed it, go back and see which brokerages, which trade techs, uh, took home the awards, but we're back to it today. And I'm going to go for a Guinness world book of records for the most earnings releases in the shortest amount of time.So that is my goal today. Uh, listen up. There are some big names that have come out so far. This. Uh, that I think are worth mentioning. So let's go ahead and dive right in with a couple other bits of news to follow as always thanks to Benzinger and Aaron Thomas for making this happen. Y'all all right.Earnings Cura leaf. We'll start big, go bigger, go home, right. And clearly see you RLF revenue. 30 317 million in Q3, 2021. That is up 2% sequentially quarter over quarter and 74% year over year. Not a whole lot of other news to really touch on. They opened a few dispensary's did make the acquisition of Trek that we covered before as well as Los Suenos farms. So, uh, those acquisitions are covered outside of that. A really big number. So clearly continuing to lead the space, uh, in that regard AgriFood, HGF why really considered recently to be the darling anciliary company of the space revenue up 460% year over year up three or up 33% quarter over quarter. It's a 15.8 million, uh, this past quarter with a backlog of business. That is now up to over 117 million, I think over 30 million of that was added just last quarter. And they're expecting to replicate that addition in this next quarter. So AgriFood is not slowing down. At all. Uh, I do not see this company. I'm going backward, at least within the next three months. Goodness growth, GD NSF, formerly Vireo health revenue increased 28% year over year, uh, excluding their divested assets in the quarter. So they did divest some assets, uh, or a subsidy. Uh, if you include those, um, assets, they really only increased 7%, uh, however, uh, or sorry. Yeah, 7% if you exclude those assets. So the numbers moving forward are a little bit less inflated. Then I think their press release would show. Um, but overall their numbers were apparently negatively affected by Arizona monsoon like weather.Uh, their total revenue was 13.8 million. So this is what I'm going to keep an eye on. I find this to be an overly negative press release, but normally you don't hear about the weather, uh, and in a press release. However, they are, uh, agricultural and outdoor in the, in the Arizona market. So, uh, we'll keep an eye on.You're Aurora cannabis. That's ACB Q1, a fiscal year 2022. There are medical cannabis revenue is at 23% year over year to 41 million. Their recreational cannabis revenue is down 44% year over year to 19.1 million last quarter. It was 19.5 million. So. Overall, we knew they were going to transition to a more medically dominant revenue driving company.Uh, especially in the international markets, Europe, they are expanding aggressively there in the Netherlands, uh, so on, so forth, but, uh, ACB. It's not, um, surprising that their overall revenue is somewhat down due to their recreational, uh, lack of recreational revenue. But I do want to see the medical cannabis side really take off, uh, otherwise, uh, you know, what's the point? So ACB another one that is always under the spotlight, uh, Madman we'll touch on them. Briefly. MMN F F Q1 fiscal year 2022 revenue increased 13.4% year over year to just under 40. And worth mentioning, uh, decreased margins due to more promotional activities. So they are getting out there a little bit more, uh, is what I take from that, which I like, I think they need to put their names back out there as one of the OGs in the space.Uh, they do have a net loss of over 55 million. So, uh, that number I'd like to see. Uh, next next quarter, of course you grow that's urban grow, UGR grow record Q3 revenue up 119% year over year to 18.3 million, uh, worth noting organic growth accounted for 106% of that. 119% growth. Uh, so no. 40 and a half million in cash on hand, and they raised their yearly guidance over 60 million. So it kill or earnings for urban growth. UGR on the NASDAQ Cronos group, uh, delays their filing due to impairment charge for us CBD operations. There are some rumors going around that they were about to get fully acquired by. Um, not the case, I would say, uh, we'll come back to them. I think more in the coming days, village farms, that's VFS on the NASDAQ, completed their acquisition of balanced health botanicals. This past quarter, their combined company, cannabis sales are over 31. Making about 43% of village farms, total company sales, pure sun farms is the top selling dried flower brand and Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. And that specific brands revenue increased 53% year over year, 13% quarter over quarter to 27.4 million us last one, holy moly, five and a half minutes. And that's a lot of earnings at five and a half minutes. Somebody sent me a. Um, we have, I ant this IDH U F revenue up 21% year over year down, 9% quarter over quarter. It's a 49.3 million. Their net loss is 15 million, which is actually 10 million less than their net loss was this time last year. So I liked seeing that.I think I, and this has been on the right path. Uh, the quarter over quarter is interesting to me, the decrease there. Uh, once again, I think I'd like to not see that trend. All right. Y'all come on. Todd ton of, uh, earnings, I think for me, AgriFood and urban growth, take the cake purely for main steady goodness growth, Aurora.Um, and uh, I ant this I'm keeping an eye on. Uh, there is a lot more earnings to come, but really quickly to touch on a few others tilt holdings, T L LTF expands their partnership with Aero brands to manufacture and distribute more inhalation products in Massachusetts terrorists in TRS RSSF looks to expedite the acquisition of gage cannabis. That's G AEG F with an amendment to their acquisition. Uh, they implore voters or shareholders to vote on that. Legislatively Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman pushing senators for legalization. Uh, there was a bit of a click baity headline saying the Biden administration continued to deny public housing. If you do see that floating around, read the article, that's not really what it is. Um, can they, the federal law continues to be the. Um, deciding factor for public housing. Um, and right now the federal law is what it is. I think you can blame the Biden ministration, if you want for not acting quicker on legalizing cannabis. That is totally fair. Um, but when it comes to denying public housing, that's not something that's actively happening. That being said, um, obviously they need to change the stupid rule, uh, and, and let marijuana, uh, occur, especially in legal state markets. Oh, all right. Y'all Elliot lane, cannabis daily. I'm out of breath.I needed some water. Hope you enjoyed it. I will look forward to doing this the rest of the week. No more events this week. So you will hear from me on time. Moving forward.
