Pre-recorded from Washington D.C. it's the Good Music Show! Today we are talking all about NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concerts. We each picked 2 videos to illustrate what we love about the series: one classic and one hidden gem. After discussing our general thoughts and a brief history of the Tiny Desk, we get into our classics which are among the highest viewed of the series. We nerd out about the suave coolness and skill of Anderson .Paak and his backing band the Free Nationals. Then we get into the first viral TDC: a career-altering performance from T-Pain and his pianist Toro. Then we talk about a showstopping performance from Diane Coffee, which includes some behind-the-desk dancing you don't want to miss. Finally, we end with the passionate lyrical powerhouse Camp Cope who let the music do most of the talking in a great way.Playlist of the performancesPlaylist of studio versions of all songs performed in our picks: Spotify - Apple Music - YouTubeSend us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! Continuing our review of 2024, today we discuss our picks for 2024 albums of the year, ie the albums we are most excited to talk about. It just so happens we picked albums that we both already loved before embarking on this 2024 episode journey!First we'll do a little rapid fire album discussion pulling from each of our 2024 Album Topsters (see link below). We revisit our thoughts on the much discussed Brat and Alligator Bites Never Heal, as well as two underrated rap albums Dark Times and Pinball, among others. Then we get into Julius's album pick - Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay. This duo's 2024 offering is a dynamic and conceptual album filled with catchy melodies. The music is catchy and expertly crafted, not to mention their great visual art in music videos and live performances. Then we get into a personal favorite for Danny, Sturgill Simpson who released an album under the name "Johnny Blue Skies." We'll get into what lead him to the name change, how his music affected country as a whole, and how Sturgill's no-frills, jam-forward live shows became a hugely popular live show over the past year.Image - Magdalena Bay Music VideoSturgill GQ articleSend us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! Today on the Good Music Show - we make another drastic format change to discuss a "Good" Music Movie! Brick by Br...err I mean Piece by Piece is a LEGO animated documentary about the life and career of PHARRELL WILLIAMS. Directed by Morgan Neville, and starring several artists who've worked with Pharrell, we dissect the central question surrounding this movie: why?Joining us is LEGO film expert Danny Vincent, who also happens to host a few great podcasts as well. Danny V guides us through the film's journey, and we ask the hard hitting questions that everyone wants to know. Is Kelis mentioned? Do they show the hat? How much do they reveal about Williams' relationship to Chad Hugo? All of that plus extremely dated discussions of our Super Bowl predictions, Grammy's recap, and thoughts on the Lilo and Stitch teaser (not the trailer which has since come out).Link to Piece by Piece Soundtrack PlaylistPlease check out Danny Vincent's podcasts at the links below:Looking for the Ocean: A Pixar Journey: a podcast about everything Pixar with episodes featuring Danny and Julius! It Happened One Podcast: a podcast about relationships in movies! The Snub Club: a podcast about film history!Danny's Letterboxd Page: chock full of a ton of great reviews!Send us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! "Dare to Re-Sequence: Making Dare to Be Stupid Make Sense" This week, Lauren and Russ take their marriage to the next level and take on a noble Weird Al challenge: rearranging the tracklist of Dare to Be Stupid into an order that (dare we say it?) makes more sense. We each came up with our own new sequence for the album, and we're diving deep into the why behind our choices. Does “Like a Surgeon” really need to be Track 1? Should “One More Minute” hit earlier or later? We've got opinions—and so will you.We also have links to both of our resequenced versions so you can listen along and decide which one reigns supreme. We're talking Paul McCartney in this episode. Specifically his music during the decade of the 90s. Author JR Moores has a new book out now titled Off The Ground: Paul McCartney in the 1990s. This was an era like no other for McCartney, perhaps even the most significant decade of his entire career after the 1960s.Following a shakier 1980s, the decade would see him reemerge with greater energy, momentum, and self-belief. JR Moores's sympathetic but not uncritical new book explores McCartney's '90s, with its impressive studio and live albums, colossal tours, unexpected side-projects, imaginative collaborations, forays into classical composition, some new Beatles numbers, and a whole lot more besides. Moores reveals how McCartney's reputation began to be perceived more generously by the public, and he argues that his output and activities in the '90s would uncover more about the person behind them than in any other decade. Brrr... it's time for everyone's favorite season to have its day in court on the Good Music Show. Today we discuss two albums that make us think of winter. We start with Danny's pick which continues his trend of finding a song that deals with a season, and making the case why the album its on also represents that season. When he heard Song for a Winter's Night by Gordon Lightfoot - a legendary folk singer-songwriter from Canada - he thought it was the perfect non-Christmas song. This album is half new recordings of Gordon's catalog and half compilation of his Warner hits. Though a variety of seasons and weather are represented here, the warmness of both Gord's voice and the production by Lenny Waronker are a perfect sonic stand-in for a crackling fire for those cold, lonely winter months (or in Danny's case, days)Then we talk about an album that to Julius represents the sadness and introspection often brought on by winter. "The Velvet Rope" is a peak in a run of excellent albums by Janet Jackson, who unfortunately doesn't get talked about enough in today's pop ecosystem. We compare this album to current trends in pop, as well as praise the impeccable production by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Janet's experience at the time of making this album results in many songs dealing with extreme emotions and allows for the listener to experience validation and catharsis through the energetic and crisp production. Now is the time to appreciate what Janet accomplished, despite anything that may have overshadowed her art.Songs featured in this episode:Canadian Railroad Trilogy (from "The Way I Feel" and "Gord's Gold")SundownOld Dan's RecordsGot 'Til It's GoneGot 'TIl It's Gone (Ummah Jay Dee's Revenge Mix)Go DeepMy NeedSend us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! Grab a snack and get ready for a fun and fascinating deep dive! In this episode we're serving up a hearty discussion on Weird Al's Dare to Be Stupid classic, "Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch." Joining me at the table is author and musicologist Lily Hirsch, and together, we unpack the humor, the history, and the gendered music themes behind this quirky parody. Was Al truly hungry for satire, or was he just forced to take a bite? We chew on that, share some laughs, and explore the broader cultural implications of gender in music. So grab a cold one (and maybe a sandwich) and tune in for another deliciously nerdy episode!Beer'd Al is a girly member of the OddPods Media Network.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/beer-d-al-podcast--5439475/support.
Returning guest Lindsay brings another deep cut to the show, with her choice of a Transit-era B-side that holds some significance in the history of Andrew's career. Should this track have been included on the album, or does it work better in it's life as a Deluxe Edition bonus track? Is this a song we want to hear live this year? What is Lindsay's favorite Andrew song and album? Find it all out here! Author Hazel Jacks returns to the podcast to kick off our celebration of 20 Years in Transit. We're trying to manifest an official tour announcement! Hopefully, soon? Here on the podcast, we're going to talk about several Jack's Mannequin songs in the coming months. Hazel chose to start us off with an emotional one. Join us as we make our own meanings of the heavy lyrics, talk about Andrew's 2005 blog, and touch on other songs of the era as well! We also touch on how this song and others inspire her as she writes and how she incorporates music into her stories. It's the first epsiode of 2025! And it's a good one! Lauren & Russ are joined by our friends and all-around good dudes Chris Hollister and Bob Oakes to talk about Weird Al's recent collab with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots, "New Years Eve Polka (5-4-3-2-1)." And, in a Beer'd Al Podcast first, all four humans recorded this episode in-house! It was a full room of folks talking about Weird Al, music, and so much more.
