This week we explore Ska-Jazz. Specifically, we talk to Fred Reiter (aka Rocksteady Freddie), the band leader of the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. And we aim to understand the difference between the jazz-influenced traditional ska sound and ska-jazz. Fred gives us a simple explanation and a more complex technical explanation. But Fred also talks about his entire personal history in music: He studied jazz in high school--clarinet, flute and saxophone. He played the sax in a variety of bands including the N.Y. Citizens, The Scofflaws and The Toasters. New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble started as a recording project, but he soon realized there was a demand for it on the live circuit. The band continues to play. To this day they have played in 37 different countries. Fred also tells us what it was like to be a part of the legendary Skavoovie tour in 1993 (The Special Beat, The Selecter, The Skatalites, The Toasters), what it was like to share the stage with Coolie Ranx, how the German band The Busters helped get the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble to Europe, and what it was like to back ska legend Laurel Aitken in the 90s. Plus we discuss various elements of jazz, and why the elitism of the genre he experienced in New York may have influenced him to play in ska bands. Support the show

Victor Rice studied music at Manhattan School of Music intending to be a New York City session bass player. That is until he got talked into joining The Scofflaws in 1988. From that point forward, he became immersed in the world of ska. In fact, after doing a fantastic job producing The Scofflaws' first album, Bucket started hiring him to produce Moon Ska albums. He produced Skavoovie and The Epitones' Ripe, The Pietasters' Oolooloo, The Slackers' Better Late Than Never and The Adjusters' Before The Revolution. Today we speak to Victor Rice about his time in The Scofflaws, producing Moon Ska albums, and playing bass in the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. But we also cover his time at King Django's studio Version City, where he and Agent Jay (The Slackers), worked on many a brilliant album like Rocker T's Nicer By The Hour. And we also devote some time to talking about dub techniques and dub history, as Victor has become a master of the genre. His dub name is Strikkly Vikkly. We also talk about Victor's TWO Latin Grammys, some of his work with The Skatalites, what it's like to stay at European squat houses, why he moved to Brazil in 2002, and what it was like to do a dub remix of Hepcat's From Outta Nowhere album. It's an odds and ends episode to round out the month of May. More old favorites and plenty of bands that are completely new to us. So why not share the wealth! There's plenty of talk of the month's big releases, so we figured we would focus on some of the smaller releases. Featuring the music of New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, The Valkyrians, Ska-Frika, Ska-Jazz Messengers, The Gravelites, Boss Melody, Felices Adicciones, Codename Colin, and Half Past Two!

What I loved about ska shows back in the mid-'90s was that you really didn't know what you were going to get. A more traditional ska band, a ska/punk band that was more punk than ska, a 2 Tone revival sounding band, a ska/punk band that was more ska than punk, a band with 4 members, a band with 10 members, a band full of high schoolers or a band full of actual adults! It really was all over the map like that, and the thing that brought those bands to our towns and the crowds to the venues was the ska that was at the center, in some way, of it all. This episode represents that love of all things ska that I had as a young man encountering shows not knowing exactly what I was going to see, but at the same time knowing that I was going to dig it! El principal objetivo; mezclar el legendario Jazz con ritmos jamaiquinos. Con integrantes de bandas como The Toasters, Scofflaws y The Skatalites, nació, la ahora mítica New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. Si bien, el ska-jazz ya había tenido algunas representaciones, los neoyorkinos le dieron las bases a este subgénero para que se convirtiera en un fenómeno como lo es actualmente. Su música se caracteriza por la finura del jazz armonizada con la alegría y energía del ska. Una mezcla que conquistó a todo el mundo incluso sirvió de inspiración para otras bandas de ska. Desde 1995 comenzaron su carrera discográfica con su álbum homónimo “New York Ska Jazz Ensemble”, posterior a este “Low Blow”, “Get This”, “Minor Moods”, “Skaleidoscope”, “Step Forward” y “Double Edge”. Dos EP´s; “Properly” y “Free is a bird” y por si fuera poco, tres discos en vivo; “Live in Europe”, “Live in Paris” y “Live in Gouvy”. En cada uno de estos y en sus presentaciones dan cátedra de cómo hacer y como tocar buen ska, quizás en su modalidad más compleja. Su brillantez, constancia y calidad los posicionan como la mejor banda de ska-jazz mundial, un emblema del movimiento que ha tenido en sus filas a músicos grandiosos como, Freddie Reiter, Rick Faulkner, Devon James, Victor Rice entre otros. Para los amantes del género es imposible no reconocer la trayectoria de la New York, a pesar de los años sigue en vigencia y día tras día conquistan a más público, consagrándose junto a los grandes de la historia del ska mundial.
