Last week, we broke news of the CDC removing gun defense use estimates and a review paper it commissioned from its website after meeting privately with a group of advocates. This week, we have one of those advocates on the show. Mark Bryant, executive director of the Gun Violence Archive, was involved in the private meeting with CDC officials. He attacked Florida State University criminologist Gary Kleck's estimate of 2.5 million defensive gun uses per year as misleading. And he said it was preventing new gun restrictions from making progress. The CDC initially rebuffed the request from Bryant, GVPedia's Devin Hughes, and Newtown Action Alliance's Po Murray. However, they eventually changed course and deleted the defensive use estimates from their website without getting input from other points of view or making a public announcement of the edit. Mark joins the show to explain and defend his role in the conversation, which he says he was added to late in the process. He argued his only concern in the conversation was with the accuracy of the data. Things got a bit heated when I challenged him on a number of points and vice versa. However, it stayed civil overall, and I think the conversation was fruitful and exciting. Beyond the politics of the situation, we also discussed the controversy over how best to measure defensive gun uses as well as things like mass shootings. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I give updates on New Jersey's gun-carry restrictions and California's fee-shifting law. Special Guest: Mark Bryant.

Listen in as Raquel and Jennifer join Kristin Song in conversation about gun safety, responsible and sensible gun storage, and their importance in ending gun violence. Kristin Song became a gun safety activist after her 15-year-old son Ethan was killed with an unsecured gun in his best friend's house. After learning that the negligent gun owner would not be charged, but instead, his 14-year-old son would be charged with manslaughter, Kristin was determined to strengthen Connecticut's safe storage law and put the responsibility on gun owners instead of children.Kristin's unifying approach in Connecticut was instrumental in bringing together both major political parties to put aside their affiliation, leave their egos at the door and keep kids safe. Ethan's Law requires all guns to be secured if a child or unauthorized person can gain access, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.Kristin expanded her mission to keep kids safe to the federal level. Ethan's Law was introduced in the Senate and House in 2021. Kristin testified in front of the Senate judiciary committee in May of 2021, and as of today, Ethan's Law has hundreds of cosponsors and organizations that have stepped up to endorse Ethan's Law.How to reach Kristin:Ethan Miller Song Foundation: www.songstrong.orgTwitter: @ethanlaw2Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kristin.song.58Mentioned in this episode:Newtown Action Alliance, https://www.newtownactionalliance.org/#EndGunViolence Lunch & Lobby Days, https://www.newtownactionalliance.org/endgunviolence-lunch-lobby-daysLet Raquel and Jennifer know what you think about this and other episodes of Madness Cafe on IG @madnesscafepodcast or by email at madnesscafepodcast@gmail.com,And don't forget to rate and review the show wherever you listen! Thanks for listening and responding!

So the 2020 election is in the history books. On Thursday, November 5th – two days after the polls closed – we hosted the first ever live episode of Sorry Not Sorry to put it in perspective. Our guests had such great information, and so many smart things to say that I know you’ll forgive the slightly less than perfect audio that comes from a live streamed event. At the time, it was clear that Biden has a significant popular vote margin, and was then about four million votes ahead of Donald Trump. But, despite that big win, the electoral college was not settled. Disunity still in our country, with a huge divide between Trump’s supporters and Biden’s supporters over the fundamental questions of what it means to be American. But the issues in this election go far wider than the presidency. Control of the senate still hangs in the balance, and won’t be decided until January. The conronavirus just reached its highest daily rate of new infections since the pandemic started and the fate of the affordable care act will decided by the Supreme Court, and what happens with healthcare by the new government next year. More than 100,000 Americans are victims of gun violence each year, and 40,000 of them die. And we can’t find the families of more than 500 immigrant children we separated at the border. It’s a lot. To help us make sense of it all, I’ve invited an incredible group of experts here tonight. We were joined by E.J. Dionne of the Washington Post and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and the author of Code Red: How Progressives and Moderates Can Unite to Save Our Country, Jesse Wegman is a member of the New York Times Editorial Board and the author of Let the People Pick the President: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral College, Po Murray is Chair of the Newtown Action Alliance, Laura Packard is National Co-Chair of Health Care Voter, and Hassan Ahmad is an immigration attorney and immigrant rights activist. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Swords to Plowshares started through a partnership with Newtown Action Alliance, the Episcopal Church, the UCC, and the New Haven Police Department. Three years ago, the Rev. Jeremy Lucas won an AR-15 in a raffle for a softball team and destroyed the gun and turned it into a gardening tool with the help of Raw Tools Inc. He dedicated that gardening tool to the Newtown Action Alliance, which led to a conversation about change in Connecticut around turning guns into gardening tools. Jim worked with the Yale-New Haven Hospital and churches in the New Haven area, and begun putting together the Swords to Plowshares Ministry Network. Read more at CoffeeHour.org

During this very memorable episode we feature a special pre-recorded inverview with Sarah Clements. Sarah Clements is a senior at Newtown High School. Her mother is a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School and a survivor of the shooting in December. Sarah uses change and activism to transform her painful experiences into positive action. She founded and leads the Jr. Newtown Action Alliance, the student branch of the Newtown Action Alliance, a grassroots organization that formed after 12/14 looking to address the issue of gun violence in America through legislative and cultural change. She looks forward to continuing her work in gun violence prevention by working with young people around the country, in urban and suburban areas, to help solve this problem which affects her generation so disproportionately.
