Join us for a new episode of Radio GAG on Self Defense. People generally and marginalized communities in particular have once again been expressing in social circles the perceived need to own a gun to protect themselves. “Protection” is the number one reason cited on polls of gun owners of why they chose to arm themselves. In this episode we hope to acknowledge the fear and actual danger people may find themselves in, while also asking deeper questions about who and what they want to protect themselves from and what risks and responsibilities come with their choice. . Since higher risks of death, suicide and injury are associated with gun ownership, it's our mission in this show to give good information on how you can reduce harm associated with owning guns and extend the invitation to join our Gays Against Guns community and networks of queer folk and allies everywhere. GAG Guests: Giffords Gun Owners for Safety, Shannon Flores and Jessie Ojeda with George DeCastro Day and GAG co-founder Kevin Hertzog.

This week Mark is joined by President of Gays Against Guns and Co-Founder of the Queer Liberation March, Jay W. Why can't we have an assault weapons ban? Assault weapons are used in most mass shootings that have killed and wounded terrifying numbers of people in public places. So why did our Congress allow the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 to expire in 2004? Why is it so difficult to get this ban passed on a Federal level when increasing numbers of innocent people and communities are terrorized with greater and greater frequency? Gays Against Guns founding member Jay W. Walker explains the background story of why we can't get a gun safety bill of this nature through Congress. Meanwhile Gays Against Guns will be represented at the 2022 Women's Convention in Houston Texas by activist Brigid McGinn and Radio GAG producer Sarah Germain Lilly. Today I am joined by Ti Cersley from Gays Against Guns, in a bonus episode that seems more prevalent than ever following the terrorist shooting of LGBTQ+ people in Oslo last weekend. Gays Against Guns are an American organisation which basically does what it says on the tin - it's gays and allies in the US trying to break the chain of death caused by outdated constitutional gun laws. Since 2016 they've been putting pressure on corrupt politicians, making companies cut ties with the NRA, and even protesting at gun shows. Ti told me how the gun industry in the US is all about marketing, control and addiction and how living in the UK allowed him to see what a country where guns are illegal can look like. This is more relevant than ever, because it's not just happening in America. Joining Mission today is John Grauwiler, teacher and founder of activism group Gays Against Guns. Before forming GAG, Grauwiler was an English teacher in New York City who was rocked by the news of the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting, prompting him to form a coalition that is “committed to nonviolently breaking the gun industry’s chain of death.” Also a member of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, or ACT UP, Grauwiler is a tried and true activist and community leader who continues to stand up for what he believes. Following his feature in Mission’s fourth issue, Grauwiler sits down with Mission to talk about the effect gun violence has had on his life, what motivates him in his day to day, and educating the public on the need for gun regulation. WPKN’s LGBTQ Community Radio Show and we are excited about this month’s show. We are speaking with Jay Blotcher about the new book “Rainbow Warrior: My Life in Color” Gilbert Baker...Creator of the Rainbow Flag”. Jay was tapped by the Gilbert Baker Estate to edit Gilbert’s various notes and 3 drafts for the project. Along with Charley Beal, Jay brought the colorful story of the amazing Gilbert Baker to life...so tune in to WPKN 89.5 this Wednesday at noon... As part of the current fundraising campaign the LGBTQ Community Radio Show has a copy of the book signed by Jay Blotcher, Charley Beal and the panel from the Stonewall Inn book presentation for a contribution of $100. Much thanks to the anonymous donor of the book and the Stonewall Inn panel Brendan Fay: A veteran LGBT activist, Fay was a co-founder of St. Pat's for All, the organization that defied the Ancient Order of Hibernians refusal to allow gays and lesbians to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Parade. The group finally achieved success in 2015. Fay is involved in countless LGBT and social justice groups, and is also a documentary filmmaker. Stacy Lentz: A world-renowned lesbian activist for LGBT rights, Lentz is a co-owner of the Stonewall Inn, and co-founder of the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative. Lidell Jackson: A veteran activist in New York City’s LGBTQ community of color, Jackson was a member of the pioneering group Men of All Colors Together. He is an actor, dancer, and sexual liberationist, serving as founder and host of the long-running Jacks of Color social club. Cathy Marino-Thomas: has worked for same-sex marriage since 1998, serving as board president for Marriage Equality USA. She currently serves on the steering committee for Gays Against Guns. Her community advocacy began as a buddy for GMHC, helping people afflicted with HIV/AIDS.
Born and raised in Virginia Beach, Ti Cersley shares a local’s perspective on how the recent massacre shattered the community. We look at the loose gun laws that allowed this to happen and discuss ways that lives could have been saved. And we have a special report from a Gays Against Guns rally in Union Square to honor the victims this past weekend. With hosts Ti Cersley and Paul Rowley. Audio segment by Owen Crowley.
In this Pride Month special, some of our Gays Against Guns members talk about how they became activists. We share our personal paths to activism, our work with GAG, ACT UP, Queer Nation, discuss strategies to encourage others to join us, and how to communicate with folks who may not always agree with us.
This week on RADIO GAG we take a look at the law commonly known as STAND YOUR GROUND, by which anyone may defend themselves against perceived threats, even to the point of applying lethal force. Hosts Sarah Lilly, Sean Robertson and Paul Rowley will also be bringing you updates from the gun violence prevention movement and upcoming Gays Against Guns events.
For this week's Climate week special, RADIO GAG looks at the environmental cost of the arms industry -- how toxic gun culture and environmental destruction have a sordid and connected history which continues to this day to force environmental destruction and humanitarian crises. We also have an In Memoriam to gun violence victim Rodney Cox, and our ongoing nightmare of the week section. Plus a brand new climate change song from our singing queertet Sing Out Louise and news on upcoming Gays Against Guns events.
On this week’s show, your hosts Tricia Cooke and Josh Tjaden examine “Creativity Over Tragedy”- Tools of Destruction as a Means of Artistic Expression. This concept was borne out of Gays Against Guns own creative approach to combat gun violence - with an eclectic mix of genres that incorporates visual art, musical performances and other forms of expression. Featuring the work of: NYC Youth Poet Laureate, William Lohier, "Guns N' Pickles", Sing Out Louise! Like we do every week, we’ll also discuss how Gays Against Guns works to end gun violence and the gun industry’s chain of death, a weekly roundup of gun violence prevention news, how you can get involved with Gays Against Guns, and more!

Jay W. Walker first got into activism after the murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998; and again in 2016, after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. And while his strongest calls to act have come from moments of horrific violence, the one defining thread throughout his work is joy. Today Jay is an organizer for the groups Gays Against Guns (www.gaysagainstguns.net), Rise and Resist (www.riseandresist.org), and the Reclaim Pride Coalition (www.ReclaimPrideNYC.org). You can often hear him singing along with Sing Out Louise (and perhaps at the VERY end of this episode). Keep up with Jay at @ jaywwalker on Instagram and @ jaywwalker1 on Twitter. Our Future is Dying Because We are Killing It!Two days after the Valentine's Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, Steve and Caroline attend a Gays Against Guns rally in New York City. At the rally they heard from teachers who struggled about what to say to their students, only to find a level of desensitization that shocked them, a mother who can measure out her child's life by the massacres we all know by name, and activists who are determined never surrender and make this moment the beginning of the end of our national insanity....

Tonight, we discuss gun violence and the unceasingly parade of shooting incidents we have experienced. Can the LGBT community be at the forefront of a solution? We feature the experts in the field with an exclusive interview with U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01) who, along with nearly 100 co-sponsors, introduced legislation this week to ban the manufacture, possession, transfer, sale, or importation of bump stocks like the one used to murder 59 innocent men and women earlier this week in Las Vegas. We also talk to Aaron Overman with Gays Against Guns on perspective on next steps. Panelists include jounalists Brody Levesque and Karen Ocamb. Congressman David N. Cicilline is currently serving his fourth term and is a member of the House Democratic Leadership as Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC). He is also a leader in Congress on issues of core American values, serving as Co-Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and Vice Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Aaron Overman is a part time social justice activist and core team member of Gays Against Guns in Washington, DC.
