Michigan's Children President & CEO Matt Gillard welcomes state Rep. Jasper Martus to the Speaking for Kids podcast to discuss efforts to advance making paid family medical leave mandatory in Michigan. The Genesee County Democrat is a point person in the House on the issue and has introduced a measure calling for an actuarial cost study to keep the issue moving forward into the new Legislative year. Lawmakers are expected to finish the current session next week without action on the promising bill hailed by family advocates including Michigan's Children and favored by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Beginning in 2026, Minnesota will be the 12th state in the union to offer paid family and medical leave for all Minnesotans working in the state. This means Minnesotans will be eligible for up to 20 weeks paid leave for a serious medical condition or to care for a loved one or newborn. With 75% of Minnesota's workforce unable to access paid leave benefits, this new change is welcomed by Minnesota's working class, but doesn't come without tribulations. Author of the bill in the Senate, Alice Mann, joins the crew to talk about the benefits and challenges of the law.
Opinion: Welcome news – A state payroll tax that harms many workers will decrease, not increase, in 2024. It's been a little under three years since the state's paid family and medical leave program took effect, but only a fraction of people have used it. We talk about why and how the state wants to get the word out more about it with WBUR senior business reporter Zeninjor Enwemeka.
You'll be two years older, the U.S. will have gone through a presidential election, and we'll be gearing up for another mid-term in January 2026. That's when Minnesota's Paid Family and Medical Leave program is supposed to launch… along with a payroll tax to help fund it. In the meantime, Greg Norfleet is in charge of working to set it up. Norfleet is the Director of the Paid Family and Medical Leave Program. He joined the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, also known as DEED, about a month ago. He talked with MPR News host Cathy Wurzer.
Here's Episode 55 of Michigan's Premier Progressive Podcast! Paid Family and Medical Leave is one of the important policies Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer mentioned in her "What's Next" speech last month. If Michigan's Democratic majority in the legislature can pass State Sen. Erika Geiss's paid family and medical leave bills, Michigan would join 11 other states which have already passed similar laws. Passing these bills would guarantee 15 weeks paid leave for ALL workers, and help guarantee that workers won't have to choose caring for a loved one or having to work. And since the United States remains the only developed nation not to guarantee some form of paid family and medical leave, or paid sick leave, it's up to the states to get something done. Making paid family and medical leave a reality is a priority for the nonprofit organization Mothering Justice from Detroit. National Executive Director, and Founder, Danielle Atkinson, joins me to talk about why this legislation is of the utmost importance for Michigan's marginalized citizens, and for all families. We also discuss the frustration with the recent jump in child poverty after Republicans, and a few Democrats in D.C., refused to expand the highly successful Child Tax Credit. And in my Last Call, I highlight how MAGA Republicans are pawns for the corporate class as they refuse to support the UAW strike against the Big Three Detroit Automakers.
