SHOW NOTES: https://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2025/03/night-owls.html TRANSCRIPT: https://otter.ai/u/NeK1Grf7bTzi-TYHpbLocZlEbH4?utm_source=copy_url Night Owls is an paranormal YA romance adventure about Clara and Molly, two estries who run an art house cinema in the Village in New York City. In case you're wondering, estries are Jewish owl-shifting bread-eating female vampires! This book is my new favorite, and I'm not the only one. This debut novel won gold from the Sydney Taylor Book Award AND the National Jewish Book Award! The story is fun and fast paced, it's eery and emotional, and it's got characters I want to hang out with even if they would probably be dangerous to know. LEARN MORE: A.R. There has been endless talk of the “Home Front” during this war. The "Home Front," as in what goes on here in Israel, as opposed to what happens on the battlefield - in the streets and alleyways of Gaza. But, there is - of course - also a home front, or rather many different kinds of home fronts: some are stoic, others less so; some are somehow managing, others not at all. Much to her dismay, Aliza Raz-Melzer's 50-year-old husband Amiad volunteered to go fight. She gave us a glance into her home front. A home front that is conflicted - proud and supportive on the one hand, divided and even furious on the other. The end song is K'She'Ata Kan ("When You Are Here") by Ninet Tayeb. Hosted on Acast. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ninet Tayeb over Zoom video.Rock ‘n' roll singer-songwriter Ninet Tayeb shows off her guitar-driven riffs and soaring vocals as a landscape for her captivating, reflective new single “Who Is Us.” The Israeli superstar songstress accompanies the track alongside a cinematic music video designed to tell the spiritual lyrical story of forgiveness, patience, presence, and bravery while facing life's unknowns.Los Angeles-based, Israel-native, alternative rock ‘n' roll musician Ninet Tayeb is more than a household name in her home country. From her winning “Israeli Idol” to starring in a long-running tv show about her life, the acclaimed singer, songwriter, and actress is arguably the biggest entertainment figure in the country. These days, her celebrity status knows no boundaries as she is showing America what real music is all about. In 2012 she took a pause from releasing music in Hebrew to make her debut album in English, “Sympathetic Nervous System.” It was produced by Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, Wolf Alice.) and recorded at Motor Museum Studios in Liverpool. The positive response to her music in English led to the release of “Paper Parachute” in 2017, which continues to receive glowing reviews and sparked more singles throughout 2018 and 2019.These songs reveal an artist with deep resilience, fierce determination, and disarming vulnerability. Along with an unflinching vision of her own path, those are traits that have allowed Ninet to emerge as the wild and free voice you hear on her records.Ninet is an artist who stands her ground and has made her way on her own terms. Her favorite way to connect to her audience is through her visceral, dynamic, and potentially messy live performances. Ninet's musicianship draws hints of inspiration from PJ Harvey, Chris Cornell, Foo Fighters, Portishead, Bob Dylan, and more. Her unyielding, inspiring energy and artistic brilliance has attracted interest from Rolling Stone, Billboard, NPR Tiny Desk, NYLON, and more. Ninet continues to shake up the American alt-rock scene with new music and more live performances on the way in 2022.We want to hear from you! So here I am once more. Very excited to welcome Ninet Tayeb to the show this week. Ninet is an Israeli singer songwriter who shot to fame when she won the first series of “A Star Is Born”, a televised TV talent show in Israel. She became a celebrity fixation, with all the baggage and speculation that comes along with that. Her debut album “Barefoot” went platinum in a single day, but she felt that she wasn't being authentic and worked on finding her own identity as an artist. The transition was not easy. When she previewed material from her forthcoming second album at the televised Arab Festival, the reaction was brutal and she found herself getting heckled from an agitated crowd. Undeterred she has continued to forge her own path, carving out a continued career in music and twice winning MTV's favourite Israeli artist award. Her most recent album 2017's Paper Parachute has distinct shades of PJ Harvey and the noisy grunge Ninet loved as a teenager. Ninet is also a frequent collaborator with UK prog-legend Steven Wilson. Although she doesn't self-identify as an actor, Ninet has various acting credits to her name, starring in a TV series based on her own life, and more recently the Netflix series “When Heroes Fly”. She apparently doesn't often give interviews these days. I was thrilled she was willing to talk to me for the show. Our conversation is deep at times, but it feels honest; I felt an unexpected kinship with Ninet, and I hope you enjoy it. My other guest is responsible for probably my favourite release of the year; the debut EP by Flight Mode. The band is led by Norwegian musician Sjur Lyseid. The EP is called “Tx. ‘98” and you'll hear how it was inspired by student exchange year Sjur spent in Texas as a 16 year old. We discuss truth vs fiction in songwriting, the pros and cons of nostalgia, and the future plans of the band. You'll hear some clips from the EP too. Make sure you go and check out the EP. It's currently only available digitally, but it's pretty widely available. Enjoy. Twitter: @signalspodcast / @flightmodeosl Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast / @flightmodeosl / @n.tayeb

For Mother's Day, we replay one of the most touching and brave stories of motherhood we've ever aired. In 2015, on the very last day of a month-long assignment in Nepal, Israeli journalist Danna Harman ran into three local street girls. She had just finished several unsuccessful rounds of IVF, and – back in Tel Aviv – she began daydreaming of an instant family. When one of the girls contacted her following Nepal's devastating earthquake, these dreams took on an unexpected life of their own. In a story about motherhood and friendship, Danna explores the bittersweet need for adjusting expectations. Julie Subrin edited this story, Ari Jacob wrote and performed the original music, and Sela Waisblum mixed it all up. Additional music by Blue Dot Sessions. The end song, "Imma," was written and arranged by Shaike Paikov. The cover version used in the episode is by Ninet Tayeb and Yehuda Levi. Yona Wallach was born in 1944 in Tel Aviv and never travelled outside Israel's borders. Eleven collections of her poetry have been published during her lifetime and posthumously, and many of her songs have been put to music. She also wrote for and joined a rock band. Though she died in 1985 of breast cancer at the age of 41, she is still very much present in Tel Aviv. Never one to shy away from controversy, her provocative (some would say pornographic) poem 'Tefillin' created a public storm and ruined her close friendship with fellow poet Zelda. Wallach certainly made an astonishing impact on Hebrew literature during her short life, ushering in a feminist revolution in Israeli poetry and revolutionizing literary Hebrew to include the sounds of the twentieth century. In her poem 'Hebrew,' from which host Marcela Sulak reads, she calls the Hebrew language a "sex maniac" because all nouns have a gender: "She wants to know who’s speaking / almost a vision almost an image / what’s forbidden in the whole Torah / or at least to see the sex / Hebrew peeks through they keyhole." Text: Yona Wallach, Let the Words: Selected Poems, translated by Linda Stern Zisquit. The Sheep Meadow Press, 2006. Music: 'Ayala' by Yona Wallach. Performed by Alma. 'I couldn’t do anything with it' by Yona Wallach. Performed by Ninet Tayeb.
