Freedy Johnston is a singer-songwriter whose storytelling and melodies strike deep chords. From the heartlands of Kinsley, Kansas, Johnston's works resonate with tales of heartbreak, alienation, and disappointment. His 1992 album, Can You Fly, won praise from none other than The New York Times, hailed as one of the finest of the year. Then came 1994's This Perfect World, produced by Butch Vig, spawning the hit "Bad Reputation" and earning Johnston the title of Rolling Stone's "songwriter of the year."Johnston's latest album, Back on the Road to You, featured collaborations with Aimee Mann, Susanna Hoffs, and Susan Cowsill, once again affirming his mastery in crafting soulful and unforgettable songs.Yet, there's more to Freedy Johnston than his music. His dedication extends to Joey's Song, a non-profit that raises awareness and funds for epilepsy research. Founded in memory of Mike Gomoll's son, Joey's Song unites musicians to support this critical cause. fWotD Episode 2763: Susanna Hoffs Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 27 November 2024 is Susanna Hoffs.Susanna Lee Hoffs (born January 17, 1959) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress. She, Debbi Peterson, and Vicki Peterson founded the Bangles in 1981. Their debut album, All Over the Place, (1984) was acclaimed by critics but sold poorly. Their second album, Different Light, (1986) was also warmly received by critics and was certified double-platinum in 1987 and triple-platinum in 1994. It contained the US number two single "Manic Monday" written by Prince and the number one single "Walk Like an Egyptian". The group's third album, Everything (1988), included the US top ten charting "In Your Room" and number one "Eternal Flame", both written by Hoffs with Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Hoffs was lead vocalist on five of the seven Columbia singles by the Bangles, which contributed to a public perception that she was a lead singer, even though all four members took lead vocals across their output. Following tensions including resentment at Hoffs's perceived leadership and the stress of touring, the band split in 1989. It reformed in 1999 and released the albums Doll Revolution (2003) and Sweetheart of the Sun (2011).Hoff's first solo album, When You're a Boy (1991), was followed by Susanna Hoffs (1996). Neither of the releases proved to be as popular as the Bangles' albums, although they yielded two charting singles in the US, the top 40 hit "My Side of the Bed", and "All I Want". She recorded several songs for films and formed the faux-British 1960s band Ming Tea with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet. Hoffs teamed with Sweet to produce Under the Covers, a series of cover song albums. Her 2012 album Someday was followed by two more cover albums Bright Lights (2021) and The Deep End (2023).Hoffs's first novel, This Bird Has Flown, a romantic comedy about a struggling musician, was published by Little Brown in 2023. It received favorable reviews, and Universal Pictures purchased the rights to the novel for a screen adaptation. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:06 UTC on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Susanna Hoffs on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.

Vicki Peterson wrote, sang and played lead guitar on many of the Bangles' best songs, even if they weren't the ones that made the band famous. In a smart, revealing conversation, the down-to-earth Peterson reflects on the Bangles' origins—and her desire to be in an all-female band, which soon would include her sister Debbi (a former Caropop guest) and singer/guitarist Susanna Hoffs—and the compromises and rising tensions that accompanied their success. In the aftermath of a painful Bangles breakup, Peterson—a band person through and through—joins the Continental Drifters, teams with Susan Cowsill in the Psycho Sisters and tours with the Go-Go's. The Bangles also reunite for two more albums. What lies in the future for the Bangles and Continental Drifters? What is Peterson's creative life like now? (Photo: Rebecca Wilson Studio.)

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2024 41:56

Wilmington, Delaware's George Thorogood got his start on acoustic blues.  He formed a band called the Delaware Destroyers in 1973, and this would eventually become his band, known as George Thorogood & The Destroyers.  He released his first record in 1977, and received more mainstream notice when he opened for the Rolling Stones in 1981.  The same year his touring schedule included the “50/50 tour” where George Thorogood & the Destroyers toured all 50 states in 50 days.  Thorogood's high energy shows and relentless touring schedule would be a hallmark of the band, creating a dedicated audience worldwide. The 1980's saw a resurgence in interest in blues rock, and this was a benefit for George Thorrogood.  The band would see continued success from their commercial breakthrough album, “Bad to the Bone,” released in 1982.  Albums would consist of both original material and covers of classic blues songs.  Much of their material has a humorous angle, though the blues style is solid and unapologetic, drawing influence from such artists as Elmore James, John Lee Hooker, and Bo Diddley. The George Thorogood Collection showcases some of the biggest hits from the band throughout the 70's and 80's.  It was released in March 1989, and we will be covering several hits from this album today.Wayne takes us through this blues boogie greatest hits album for this week's podcast. I Drink AloneOne of the better known George Thorogood hits, this pun-laden song peaked at number 13 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, and was an original from Thorogood.  “Now every morning just before breakfast, I don't want no coffee or tea.  Just me and by good buddy Weiser - that's all I ever need.”Bad to the BoneThis is the signature song of George Thorogood and the Destroyers.  Despite failing to crack the Top 100 in the US, it is universally identifiable from commercials, TV shows, movies, and the song itself.  It has been in over 25 films, including the iconic biker scene from “Terminator 2.”Move It On OverWhile this song does not appear on the “Collection,” we had to include it in this look at the band.  It is a cover song originally written and recorded by Hank Williams in 1947, and depicts the struggles of a guy who has come home late and found himself - literally - in the doghouse.Gear JammerThe deeper cut originally came out in 1985, and has become an anthem of truckers everywhere.  It talks about rolling down the road in an 18-wheeler, and looking to make time so the trucker can get home to his baby.  You'll find yourself moving at a high speed if you play this song in your car! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Bad Boys by Inner Circle (from the television series “COPS”)This reality-based show premiered in 1989, and had an iconic song with a reggae riff. STAFF PICKS:You're What You Want to Be by Cruel Story of YouthRob launches the staff picks with a deep cut from a lost band.  This Wisconsin foursome produced their only album (self-titled) in 1989).  The song itself is a good one in the alternative music genre, though it seems overproduced to us.  Girl You Know Its True by Milli VanilliBruce risks cancellation from the show for putting this decidedly non-rock travesty on the picks.  Milli Vanilli released the album of the same name, which got them both commercial success and critical recognition via a Grammy award in 1989 despite not singing a note on the album.  No musical survey of 1989 would be complete without acknowledging the Milli Vanilli controversy.Eternal Flame by The BanglesLynch brings us a ballad from Susanna Hoffs from the girl group The Bangles.  They started their career singing 60's rock songs, then incorporated some 70's punk before hitting it big with their own material.  It topped the charts in 9 different countries.  You Got It by Roy OrbisonWayne closes out the staff picks  with a hit posthumously released from Roy Orbison's album "Mystery Girl." It went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Fellow Traveling Wilburys alumni Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne co-wrote the song with Orbison, and they play on the single along with an uncredited George Harrison. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Ytse Jam by Dream TheaterWe close out with a prog rock instrumental from Dream Theater's debut album. Darren Urban has returned from the NFL meetings - hence the day's delay for the podcast - and so he, Paul Calvisi, and Dani Sureck have plenty to talk about, including what the Cardinals could do at No. 4 in the draft. A trade? What would the “QB surcharge” might be? Discussion points include J.J. McCarty's “rise” on draft boards and Drake Maye's “drop,” options the Cardinals might have, dumb trade suggestions floating out there, “It's good to be Monti,” the Cardinals holding another joint practice, two Wednesday games on Christmas, one division for Hard Knocks, and Dani's resemblance to Susanna Hoffs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

21 players made their all-star debuts in the 1984 All-Star Game. For 12 of the 21, the 1984 game would be their only appearance. Of those 12, five never entered the game. Not only do we run down the forgotten five who never played in their only All-Star appearance, in this episode we have fun with perms, debate the best and worst baseball song, and we remember the potent cocktail of heroin and cocaine that killed John Belushi. We also look back at when Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Gos dated Dodgers first basemen Mike Marshall and get all gooey inside when Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles does the side eye thing in "Walk Like an Egyptian." Pull up your leg warmers and come along for the ride.

Then, we talk about the film itself as cultural juggernaut, and why Austin Powers and the Mike Myers brand felt inescapable. With the recent announcement of the limited edition boygenius signature Broadkaster Jr. by Gretsch—which sold out, by the way—another entry has been added to the relatively short list of women, or, in this case, groups of women with signature guitars.  It's a list that has expanded in the past decade or so, and it includes Yvette Young, Chrissie Hynde, Emily Wolf, H.E.R., Susanna Hoffs, Lari Basilio, Bonnie Raitt, Nancy Wilson, and Courtney Love. And, of course, what is perhaps the most unique signature model named for a woman–the Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent.  Even though the list of women with signature guitars has grown over the years, I think there's still a lot of opportunity for brands to honor some of today's most exciting, up-and-coming guitarists who just happen to be women.  Let's talk about some women who I think should get a signature guitar. I based this list mostly on vibes. Okay, getting serious, yes, this list is largely artists of whom I'm a personal fan. But I also thought about musicians who are gaining popularity, brands that don't presently have a lot of signature models, period, guitar models that have been done to death—so I won't be suggesting Strats of Teles—and, finally, I tried to hit a few different genres. But, me being me, most of these artists fall fairly squarely within quote unquote indie rock genre. Support Get Offset by... Hello everyone! John Cowsill is back, and this time he brought his beautiful wife Vicki.    Most of you on Drum Channel should be familiar with John's career, he's been drumming almost as long as he's been walking.    We're going to talk about his appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show at age eight years old with his family band The Cowsills, and their hit song, “The Rain The Park and Other Things” (which most people know as “The Flower Girl” song.) and also the inspiration for the popular TV show The Partridge Family and more.    We speak to Vikki about her group The Bangles, featuring Debbi Peterson (Vicki's sister) on drums & vocals, Susanna Hoffs on guitar & vocals, and bassist Micki Steele (who before joining in 1983, was in The Runaways for a minute) replacing original and now current bassist Annette Zilinaskas.   The female foursome went on to become one of the most popular bands of the eighties with hits, “Manic Monday,” Walk Like an Egyptian,” Eternal Flame,” and “Hazy Shade of Winter,” along with sold-out tours all over the world.   Vicki's sister Debbi also joins us, via Zoom, to talk about her experience as the drummer/singer in the Bangles, getting started, a few of her influences, and more.    Happy New Year!  Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Paul Chastain co-founded Velvet Crush rock group. Signed by Alan McGee to his mythic British indie label Creation Records who gave the band's first and second albums, the latter, the seminal “Teenage Symphonies To God”, worldwide release. Paul's musical arc also includes path crossings with a handful of top-notch talent. He has been playing and singing alongside pal Matthew Sweet from the pre-”Girlfriend” days onward. Run-ins along the way with such pop music icons and ne'er-do-wells as Roger McGuinn, Mitch Easter, Susanna Hoffs, Stephen Duffy, Tommy Keene, Ami Onuki (Puffy Ami/Yumi). Drummer/producer John Louis Richardson has similar roots, brushes with greatness and dubious associations. Among them, Joey Molland's Badfinger, Tommy Keene, Gin Blossoms, Keene Brothers, Jay Bennett, Will Hoge. He still plays live and records with DIY power pop pioneers and long time friends, Shoes. John runs his Drum Farm Studio in Menomonie, Wisconsin. A major through-line for the album Ours & amp; Life-events shaped others due to the passing of longtime mutual friend and bandmate Tommy Keene. As an inspirational figure who opened for The Matthew Sweet band, toured with Velvet Crush, and played in Richardson's band, the impact of his loss was significant. This led to the inclusion of Keene's song “Baby Face” on the album, as well as aiding in the completion of the track “Can't Let Go (Oh Tommy)”.   Paul's Info https://www.instagram.com/smallish.square/ https://www.facebook.com/TheSmallSquare https://www.youtube.com/@TheSmallSquareGroup https://www.smallsquaremusic.com/ https://farmtolabelrecords.com/artists/the-small-square/

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

As a founding member of the iconic all-girl band The Bangles, Susanna Hoffs is perhaps most associated with 80s hits like “Manic Monday,” “Eternal Flame,” and “Walk Like An Egyptian.” After releasing three platinum-selling albums, in 1989 The Bangles broke up. Two years later, Susanna started to release solo material before reuniting with The Bangles at the end of the 90s. Over the years Susanna has continued to release music and act in movies. She even appeared in all three Austin Powers films as part of a fictional Mod band. This year Susanna has added another creative pursuit to her repertoire—she's now a published novelist. Her first book, This Bird Has Flown, was released in April. And she put out her latest collection of cover songs on the album The Deep End produced by the great Peter Asher. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Susanna Hoffs about how Bruce Springsteen helped The Bangles secure a record deal after seeing them play at an amusement park in Southern California. She also tells the story of first listening to Prince's demo of “Manic Monday.” You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite Susanna Hoffs songs HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
