It's time for some more trashtalk, my friends. Remember plastic pollution? Of course you do - because it's still with us. According to the UNEP, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic enter the world's oceans, rivers and lakes EVERY SINGLE DAY. And while there was a great deal of excitement around the prospect of a Global Plastics Treaty last year, talks were suspended at the end of 2024 when UN member states failed to reach an agreement on what would have been the first-ever global legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution. But it's not just plastic that's littering the environment. You name it; it ends up there - from paper and cardboard to aluminium cans, glass, clothing and fly-tipped furniture. We're all complicit, so we've all got a part to play. The good news is that awareness and community action is growing, and that is the focus of today's interview with the inspiring Ripu Daman Bevli - a Delhi-based environmentalist and runner, on a mission to make picking up litter cool. Meet the Plogman of India... Plog-what?! The term plogging originated in Sweden - it's a portmanteau of the Swedish verb, "plocka upp" (to pick up) and the English word "jogging". In 2019, Ripu ran 1000 km across 50 cities in India, picking up trash - and followers - along the way. As he says, if you want to spark behaviour change, forget shame and berating people - the secret is to invite them to join a fun activity. So don't stress, this is far from a dismal discussion about the waste crisis. Rather, it's a joyful, encouraging story about how to change the world with positivity, recorded on location in Delhi, with a soundtrack of beautiful birdsong.Tell us what you think? It's thought the Government is unlikely to grant a wide scale amnesty for overstayers. Daman Kumar, who was facing deportation to India even though he'd never visited, has now been offered residency. The Greens want his parents to be granted an exemption, as they have been overstayers for 24 years. Into NZ Immigration principal consultant Katy Armstrong says the Government won't want to grant amnesty because it could be seen as unfair to legal migrants. She told Mike Hosking there needs to be support for those who have done the right thing. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A New Zealand-born teen threatened with deportation has mixed emotions, now that he's allowed to stay in the country. Daman Kumar faced deportation with his long-time overstayer parents to India, a country he'd never visited. Associate Immigration Minister Chris Penk has granted the 18 year-old a resident visa - but has ordered Kumar's parents to leave immediately. Kumar's lawyer, Alastair McClymont, says they're unlikely to be forced out any time soon. "Usually, you know, Immigration New Zealand are pretty good at talking to people in this sort of situation and trying to negotiate a voluntary departure." How fascinating is the Daman Kumar case? How would you like to be Chris Penk, the minister in charge of making the call as to whether to deport people? In a way this is a singular example of what the Americans deal with millions of times over. There seems to be no dispute 18-year-old Daman's parents are overstayers. Daman was born here and New Zealand is his home. So does he get deported and do his parents get deported? If you follow the law the answer seems simple - yes they do. It's not Daman's fault his parents broke the law. And that's the birthers debate in America. The illegals come across the border, they have a child, the child is an illegal and yet it is not their fault. It is their home, it is the only country they know, a Democratic administration gives you leniency and a Republican one not so much. There are, as there always are, questions around how you can be here as an overstayer for so many years. Also, I assume these are decent people. If they were criminals or reprobates the decisions would be a lot easier. So a family who work, contribute to the country, call it their own and want to stay. There's no shortage of emotion in the argument. I am sure part of their issue is at some point they technically became overstayers and they feared getting caught after a week, or a month, or a year. So do you come clean and tidy your affairs up, plead for leniency and hope for the best, or do you try your luck? Surely in doing what they did, they must have known the game at some point, for some reason, would be up? Or maybe after 8, 9,15, or 21 years, maybe they put it to one side. Maybe they would never be found out. So, what to do? Section 378 of the Immigration Act says the minister can, apparently, do anything he likes. It's easy to say "let them stay", but then you set a precedent. That's the trouble with power jobs and big decisions - they're hardly ever simple. It may well be the hardest thing Penk ever does, unless he lets them stay. That would be easier, and make you feel good – probably with minimal push back. Nina Daman competed on both the cross country and track & field teams at Campbellsville University and was a two-time All-Mid-South Conference runner. Off the course, Daman graduated this fall with a 3.91 GPA while majoring in art with a graphic design emphasis.  She has been an NCCAA and NAIA Scholar-Athlete in both track & field and cross country and has earned Mid-South Conference Academic honors in both sports.   From Lexington, Kentucky, Daman grew up as an orphan in China, living in an overcrowded orphanage without the resources or leadership to properly take care of her. However, Daman was adopted by a family that puts the Lord first in everything they do. This led to Daman becoming a leader in the Campbellsville FCA, a member of the Campbellsville and Mid-South Conference Athletic Leadership Team, and a member of 3Trees Church. Daman has also been on a mission trip to Alaska with the athletes from Campbellsville University.    Daman is the first cross country runner in NCCAA history to earn the Bullock Award for NCCAA DI Women's Cross Country in back-to-back seasons since the award was introduced in 2002, winning the award in 2023 and in 2024.    In this episode, Daman discusses her life growing up in China, how her parents led her to Christ, how she found Campbellsville University and the sport of cross country, and how she plans to spread Christ in her postgrad career.

Dr. Harris shares insights on fostering meaningful conversations about race and equity among educators, even those hesitant to engage.Throughout our discussion, Daman emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and provides guidance for leaders embarking on an antiracism journey. He explains the concept of homophily and its impact on diversity work, underscoring why understanding this dynamic is essential. Daman also discusses the value of continuous professional development in sustaining an antiracist school culture and shares advice for keeping staff motivated in this ongoing effort.
