This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. Gold mining company AngloGold Ashanti is advancing decarbonisation projects at the Geita mine in Tanzania, has commenced renewable energy project works at the Tropicana mine in Australia, and a big solar project in Ghana could be next on its list. The project at Geita, which is located in north-western Tanzania, in the Lake Victoria goldfields of the region, will replace diesel generation at the site with grid power sourced from a more environment-friendly combination of energies including hydropower. The renewables investment at Tropicana, which is located in Western Australia, has followed the project at Geita. A large solar project in Ghana, where AngloGold has the Obuasi mine, is envisaged, with more detail being provided on that into the New Year. For a long time, diesel gensets have been used to generate the bulk of the power for the processing plant at Geita. "But we are shifting that to the national grid, which has got a higher proportion of its energy from alternative sources, mainly hydropower, and then we'll keep those diesel gensets on site as backup," AngloGold senior VP investor relations and group communications Stewart Bailey explained to Mining Weekly during question time after the New York- and Johannesburg-listed company's presentation of third quarter production performance. "That process with the State utility at Geita will be happening over the end of this year into next year. We see a significant drop in our emissions on site from that. "It's a very good project for us, dependent on hydro levels in the dams in Tanzania being in a good state. But that plan is moving ahead and by around mid-year next year, the full benefit of that should start being seen. It's actually a reduction in tariff and a reduction in emissions as well. "Then, more generally, you'll see that we've signed the deal with Pacific Energy at Tropicana. Construction for that project has kicked off and after that Ghana is potentially next on the list," Bailey added. As reported by Mining Weekly in June, the AngloGold agreement with Pacific Energy involves the building of one of the largest renewable energy projects in Australia's natural resource sector and is integrated into the existing power supply for Tropicana. Pacific Energy will build and operate 62 MW of wind and solar generation capacity at the site. AngloGold expects the use of renewables will help it reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions. "We have a responsibility to proactively identify and address current and future climate-related threats. "This renewables project at Tropicana is another important step forward for us, not only in realising our overall climate objectives, but also improving our overall security of energy supply and significantly reducing the site's natural gas consumption," AngloGold Ashanti CEO Alberto Calderon has outlined. In 2022, AngloGold announced a plan to cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 30% by 2030 through a combination of renewable energy projects and initiatives which improve efficiency or use lower-emission power sources. The Tropicana renewable energy solution will be integrated into the existing 54 MW gas-fired power station at the mine under a ten-year build-own-operate agreement. The new infrastructure will comprise four 6 MW wind turbines, about 44 100 photovoltaic panels making up the 24 MW solar plant, and a 14 MW battery storage system. This is expected to reduce natural gas consumption at Tropicana by about 50%. The Tropicana project is expected to be completed in early 2025. Third-quarter gold production of AngloGold rose to 673 000 oz from 652 000 oz in the second quarter of 2023 mainly owing to higher ore tonnes processed, partly offset by lower overall recovered grades. The three highest gold production gains quarter-on-quarter were from Africa, with Iduapriem up 27%, Siguiri up 22% and Kibali reporting a 13% increase.

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist,. Gold mining company AngloGold Ashanti has reaffirmed annual production guidance for 2023 after third-quarter gold production improved versus the second quarter, continuing the recovery from setbacks faced in the first and second quarters at its mines in Brazil and Guinea. The New York- and Johannesburg-listed UK domiciled AngloGold, which has recorded no fatalities in the nine months to September 30, continued to build third-quarter momentum with a 3% increase in gold production versus the second quarter of the year. Gold production rose to 673 000 oz in the third quarter of 2023 from 652 000 oz in the second quarter of 2023 mainly due to higher ore tonnes processed partly offset by lower overall recovered grades. The three highest gold production gains quarter-on-quarter were from Africa, with Iduapriem up the 27%, Siguiri up 22% and Kibali reporting a 13% increase. These increases in gold production quarter-on-quarter, which included South America's Serra Grande's 9%, again Africa's Geita at 6% and then Australia's Tropicana at 3%, were partly offset by were partly offset by a 19% lower production performance at Obuasi in Ghana, 13% lower production at AGA Mineração in Brazil, 5% lower production at Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina and 3% lower production at Sunrise Dam in Australia. Adjusting for the placement of Córrego do Sítio in Brazil in care and maintenance, gold production was up 5% quarter-on-quarter. AngloGold has been taking steps to close the value gap with its international peers. These efforts involve initiatives to enhance cost-efficiency and extend the life of its mines while also prioritising safety, optimising cash flow, and ensuring the successful delivery of projects. The primary listing migration to the NYSE was completed on September 25, to enable enhanced access to the world's largest capital market and improved positioning alongside the gold industry's most highly valued companies. "Gold production has improved in the third quarter of 2023 and is expected to step up again over the remainder of the year, in line with our guidance," CEO Alberto Calderon stated in a media release to Mining Weekly. "We continue the work across a number of fronts to enhance our competitiveness versus our peers; our corporate restructuring is complete, we've continued to sharpen our operational and project focus, and we're on track to deliver on our decarbonisation commitments," Calderon added. As part of the approach to narrow management focus and direct its capital allocation to the Company's Tier One and Tier Two operating assets, as well as its high-return development projects, the process of placing the loss-making Córrego do Sítio mine in care and maintenance began during August 2023, and the sale of 50% indirect interest in the Gramalote project to B2Gold Corp was completed. Studies related to AngloGold's first development in the Beatty Mining District in Nevada, USA, are advancing with disclosure earlier this year of an initial 8.4-million ounce of mineral resource and an initial exploration target of between six and eight million ounces from the Merlin deposit being reported. A final investment decision for North Bullfrog is anticipated in 2024, once the appropriate permits have been received. Furthermore, the decarbonisation programme has been advancing at the Geita site, in Tanzania, and at the Tropicana site, in Western Australia. Preparation for connecting the mine site to the Tanzania grid, which has a high percentage of its power mix from renewable energy sources, is well advanced, while at the Tropicana project, works have commenced for the construction of a 62 MW wind and solar facility. Additional salient points from the third quarter of 2023 include: • Geita, which recorded improved gold production versus the prior quarter of 2023, being on track for a strong finish to the year with a production target of 500 000 oz. • Kibal...

AngloGold targets 30% emissions reduction by 2030

Gold mining company AngloGold Ashanti on Wednesday released a carbon emissions reduction target that aims to achieve a 30% absolute reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 through a combination of renewable energy projects, fleet electrification and lower-emission power sources. The Johannesburg- and New York-listed company, which has reduced its absolute GHG emissions by more than two-thirds since 2007, is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The targeted reduction, from a 2021 baseline of 1.4-million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, aims to see emissions from the company's activities diminish to about one-million tonnes by the end of the decade. When growth projects are factored in, including those in Nevada and Colombia, AngloGold Ashanti is targeting a 46% reduction in emissions by the end of the decade. Scope 1 covers emissions from within the mine site, while Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the purchase of electricity from third-party providers. The capital cost required to achieve these reductions over the coming eight years is anticipated to be about $1.1-billion, of which $350-million will be funded over that period by AngloGold and the remaining $750-million through third-party funding, including from providers of renewable energy infrastructure. The company plans in the coming weeks to initiate a process to secure a green funding facility of $250-million to $300-million to finance its portion of these decarbonisation initiatives across its business. “We have a clear pathway to achieve our target by 2030, when we expect to have lowered our overall emissions by almost a third,” said AngloGold CEO Alberto Calderon in a release to Mining Weekly. “This ensures we continue to do our part in reducing our carbon footprint, while also improving the value of our business,” Calderon added. REDUCTIONS FROM ALL BUSINESS UNITS The targeted reductions incorporate initiatives at each business unit including the introduction of renewable energy, cleaner grid power and partial fleet electrification. Approximately 60% of the planned emissions reductions will come from large renewable energy projects including wind and solar projects at the company's Australian operations and solar-power plants at both Siguiri in Guinea and the Iduapriem and Obuasi operations in Ghana. In addition, a prefeasibility study has commenced at the Cuiaba mine in Brazil to confirm the benefits of replacing some mobile fleet with battery electric vehicles (BEVs). AngloGold will also be working with Sandvik to trial underground mining's largest-capacity BEV truck at Sunrise Dam. The viability of a wind farm at Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina is also being investigated. The vast majority of these projects are expected to be net present value-positive adding value to its business by reducing energy costs and improving energy security. Two ‘clean grid' initiatives are already close to completion – a switch from diesel generation at the Geita mine site in Tanzania to the country's national power grid, which has a high proportion of power sourced from gas and renewables, and the transition to full hydro-grid power in Brazil. DECARBONISATION STARTED IN 2008 AngloGold's decarbonisation journey started in 2008 when the company set a long-term target to reduce emissions intensity by 30% from its 2007 base. By 2021 it had achieved a 47% reduction in emissions intensity, through some fuel switching and efficiency improvements but also owing to the closure and divestment of assets. Last year AngloGold Ashanti's board approved a new climate change strategy and the company published its inaugural Climate Change Report in line with the guidelines and recommendation of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures. The company's 2030 targets are embedded in a Roadmap to Net Zero which focuses on all sources of energy-related emissions, both at the company's mine sites and from its electric power providers. Gold mining company AngloGold Ashanti on Friday declared an interim dividend of $121-million on 3% higher year-on-year production and a strong cash-flow improvement. First-half production for the first six months of 2022 was 1.233-million ounces, with second-quarter output up 10% on strong contributions from Siguiri in Guinea (+21%), Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina (+17%), Sunrise Dam in Australia (+15%), Iduapriem in Ghana (+14%) and Tropicana in Australia (+14%), which offset lower production from Kibali in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Geita in Tanzania. Ramping-up Obuasi in Ghana is on track to achieve the 240 000 oz to 260 000 oz guided for 2022. Total cash costs for the first six months of 2022 were a 6%-higher $1 068/oz on inflation across several input categories, as well as larger royalty payments, with cost pressure partially offset by operating improvements and 10%-better underground grades. First-half all-in sustaining costs were $1 418/oz, compared with $1 333/oz for the corresponding period last year. “The fundamentals continue to improve, despite the challenging cost environment,” AngloGold CEO Alberto Calderon stated in a release to Mining Weekly. First-half adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation were $864-million, compared with $876-million for the first half of last year. Headline earnings for the first half of 2022 were $300-million, compared with $363-million, or $0.87 in the first half of last year. Free cash flow increased to $471-million from an outflow of $25-million in the same period last year, with the balance sheet remaining flexible during an ongoing period of reinvestment in portfolio improvement. The increase in free cash flow was supported by $549-million received from Kibali, with the $365-million cash acquisition of Corvus Gold establishing a presence in the Beatty district in Nevada , US, where production in three years' time is expected to grow over several years to 300 000-plus ounces of gold a year for 20 years at all-in costs below AngloGold's current average. Even after funding the Corvus acquisition and paying the 2021 year-end dividend, current $2.6-billion liquidity includes cash of $1.3-billion, with a maturity of the $1.4-billion multi-currency revolving credit facility extended to 2027. CAPITAL EXPENDITURE Total half-year capital expenditure (capex) was 2% higher at $472-million, with sustaining capex rising 6% to $330-million. Capex activities such as waste stripping at Tropicana (Havana) and Iduapriem (Cut 2) continued to progress. At Geita, the underground portal development at Geita Hill East progressed according to plan and mining operations continued to ramp up at the Nyamulilima openpit. In Brazil, investment to convert existing tailings storage facilities to dry-stack facilities at all mine sites continued, in a market characterised by increased competition for skills and engineering resources and the industry-wide requirements to meet regulatory deadlines relating to tailings facilities. FULL ASSET POTENTIAL REVIEW PROGRAMME The full asset potential review programme was initiated with the aim of understanding the full potential of each asset in the portfolio. The programme requires a three-month assessment for each asset covering mine design and all key operating parameters and costs, which highlights any gaps between current - and best possible - performance. The assessment helps to identify and prioritise the key improvement initiatives, which are then implemented over six to 24 months. This process is owned and managed by the relevant site leadership team, and tracked until full value is delivered. This work has been initiated at selected sites in each jurisdiction, starting with the Sunrise Dam mine in Australia. The Sunrise Dam assessment identified 33 improvement initiatives including a potential pathway to significantly increase the mineral resource and ore reserve, and step-change underground production to three-million-plus...
